Editor's Message -------------------------------------------- Very pleased to say that I now can confirm that FISM award winner Shawn Farquhar (Canada) is going to be one of our New Zealand Convention headliners. Unfortunately Nick Lewin will not be attending our convention due to unforeseen circumstances. The iPad 3 was released here in New Zealand this morning and I was up very early to join the queues to make sure I didn't miss out. Remember if you have any magic news drop me a line: Editor@MagicNewZealand.com -------------------------------------------- 2. Heroism And Patriot Award Nomination --------------------------------------------- Message by William Gleason The Society of American Magicians Heroism and Patriot award Chairman Do you know a magician who saved someone's life. Maybe a magician who did something outstanding for the community or country. Do you know a magician who served in combat and brought his magic to the troops or locals. Do you know a magician who did a USO type tour in a combat zone at their own personal risk. For many of us the answer is yes! I know magicians who fit into all these categories and more, and so do you. They do not look for personal recognition. They feel they were just doing their jobs. To us its more, we see them as having done something heroic or patriotic. We see them as having done something that is outstanding and deserves our praise and recognition. Now we can do that. The Heroism and Patriot award was created to recognize the magicians who do make a difference in the world. If you know someone who is deserving recognition , please fill out the nomination form and send it in. Don't think the other person is going to do it. Fill it out and send it in. The nomination form is on page 7 of the January 2011 MUM, you can also access it from the online issue, and these links. The Heroism and Patriot Award Nomination is open to every magician worldwide. If you any problems or questions please contact me. Thank You, William Gleason The Society of American Magicians Heroism and Patriot award Chairman http://www.magicsam.com/heropatriot.asp -------------------------------------------- 3. English Conventions -------------------------------------------- Message by Mandy Davis (UK) England is not just the venue for FISM - there are several other notable conventions happening in 2012: The Northern Magical Circle has a two-day event on 31st March/1st April in Scarborough with such great names as Mark Shortland, High Jinx, Luke Jermay, Matthew Wright and Paul Gordon. In May is the celebrated Bristol Day of Magic which takes place in Weston-Super-Mare in the West of England. This is their 52nd event which, this year, features Oscar Munoz, Paul Gertner from the US plus our own Romany - Diva of Magic. Of course we will be holding our IBM British Ring convention - this time in a new venue, Great Yarmouth on the East coast, 26th - 30th September. This year is a celebration of British Magic with names such as Mark Mason, Nicholas Einhorn, Roy Davenport and Mandy Muden appearing in the various shows and cabarets. Both Bristol Day and the IBM will hold a junior workshop too for 10 - 18 year olds - a super hour with the stars of the convention sharing their knowledge with the stars of tomorrow. The year will end, as usual, with the International Convention in London 16th - 18th November - stars yet to be announced so watch this space! -------------------------------------------- 7. Remarkable Magic. #26 - Nick Lewin -------------------------------------------- Message by Nick Lewin (US) How to make a great living performing magic on a cruise ship. I am proud and happy to let our Magic New Zealand readers know that I have just enjoyed two very special anniversaries within the last month. Firstly I celebrated my 60th birthday, and secondly I have just finished my sixth year of writing my weekly column for Magic New Zealand. Hard to believe that for a sixth of my life I have been contributing to Alan Watson's marvelous little e-zine. I have always tried to have a long-term goal in mind, in relation to my life and career. My goal upon reaching 60 was to drastically slow down my almost non-stop performing schedule and concentrate on my writing. Oh, and just to enjoy life a little less hectically! Susan and I recently moved from Las Vegas back to Los Angeles, and are now planning our move to the wonderful city of Austin. I plan to spend at least the next 20 years writing, and sharing some of the knowledge that I have acquired during my 42 years as a full-time professional magician. I am not going to stop performing shows; I am just going to enjoy the luxury of living a more selective life in doing so. I want to smell the roses and enjoy my morning cup of coffee in my own backyard more mornings in the year! As I have previously mentioned in these pages, part of this goal was achieved with the upcoming publication of my most cherished routines, 'Nick Lewin's Ultimate Linking Finger Ring Routine.' It is a limited edition book/DVD and CD package that is a goldmine for working professionals. Priced at $350 dollars it is not for the dabbler and that was the point, I am pleased to say that it has already received enough orders that it looks like it will be totally sell out - without any formal advertising. I am now pleased to announce that my next book will be available within the next month. Over the years writing for Magic New Zealand e-zine and various other magic magazines, I have written a number of columns about the business of entertaining in the cruise ship market. They have always achieved the most interest and feedback of any of the articles I have written. I decided to write an entire book teaching the entire scoop on how to enter and achieve success in this highly lucrative form of work. This is a topic I know something about, as I have worked in this market for over 40 years. I can, in all modesty say, that I am considered to be one of the highest paid and highly regarded performers within this highly specialized field of entertainment. It has made me a lot of money, taken me to some great places and kept me busy regardless of what the state of the industry was in other areas. I have read several books written about this topic, and while enjoying them, I felt they have all missed the mark. I wanted to write something that was simple, direct and of true assistance to any performer considering this line of work. There is a great deal of work available in this blossoming area and the average magician has a good shot at acquiring some of it! I recently completed my book, and in honesty I am stunned by how much practical, and previously unprinted information I have been able to gather into one book. It is genuinely an A to Z treatise on the 'ins and outs' of the topic, and can be of invaluable assistance to any performer. Surprisingly enough much of the information is just as applicable to other forms of magical work. I am charging a much more modest fee for this book than my 'Linking Finger Ring Routine' and it will be available next month (as an old fashioned ink and paper book) for US $24.95 postage free to anywhere in the world. Later, I may make it available as an iBook. I feel this is the future of publishing a book such as this. I honestly believe this may be one of the most valuable additions to the library of any performer wishing to expand his performing career and make more money by using his skills and talents. I am very proud of the 'insanely simple' way it breaks down a complex topic and makes it highly accessible to the average working magician. I will be selling the book online for its first edition, and will be accepting credit card/checks and other forms of payments through the safe, secure and simple 'PayPal' system. All copies can be personalized and signed on request. If you are interested in securing an advance copy of this book contact me at nicklewin1@mac.com to place your order, Once again, many thanks to Alan Watson, and readers of Magic New Zealand, for allowing me to achieve my 6-year anniversary! On a sadder note, I have had to cancel my appearance at the New Zealand Magic Convention this October. The reasons were sufficiently powerful to make this action a necessity. I deeply regret not getting to see my Kiwi friends and making new ones. However, I am sure that the convention will be its normal high spot in the international magic scene without me there to assist in the proceedings. -------------------------------------------- 8. Business Card or Calling Card - #250 - Kyle Peron -------------------------------------------- Message by Kyle Peron (US) magic4u02@aol.com http://www.kyleandkellymagic.com There are really 2 approaches to take with a business card. There is a branded calling card approach, and there is also a "business" card approach. I have done both for myself, as well as designed both for magic clients of mine. Both are different and do different things for you. The choice is really up to the individual and what he or she wants to get out of the card. So, one thing you have to determine is if you want your card to be a true "calling card" or more "business" card. There is a difference between the two, and they both can work for you. It really is a matter of personal preference and what you want your card to do for you. A calling card is mainly a continuation of your brand message and brand identity as carried across all forms of your marketing. It may have your logo identity on it, as well as your various contact information, website, phone number, etc. A business style card is one that will have this information on it but will actually work as a way to generate business for you. It becomes more of a marketing vehicle and might include using the back of the card in some sort of way to give the person an incentive to take action to call you, go to your website, etc. Also, business cards do more than convey the information that's printed on the card. A card that's ugly, dirty, printed on perforated paper, or full of corrections screams loud and clear that you're an amateur. No matter how many wonderful services you offer, if your card brands you as unprofessional, you lose business. A clean, creative, professionally printed, and visually attractive card on the other hand, conveys a positive first impression that lingers long after your initial meeting. Still, a savvy business person knows that adding your unique marketing-oriented text to a business card, in addition to contact information, pays off. One strategy is to add text that gives your unique, specific customer benefits. For example: 1) Easy to PAY "Credit Cards Accepted" 2) Easy to get AHOLD of "Requests handled within 24hrs." 3) Easy to get ADVICE or INFO "Use our simple Information form." 4) "Present or mention this card for a free magic trick." 5) "Receive your first show at 25% off by requesting a promo kit." 6) "Log onto kyleandkellymagic.com for current discount coupons!" 7) "Free upgrade to our deluxe package by mentioning the number on this card." 8) The back of the card can be a useful calendar. 9) Survey, redeemable for a free gift - could direct them to a web page survey, where they fill it out and get a free gift or discount. 10) Punch card for frequent clients - acts as a referral rewards system. 11) A fun optical illusion, magic trick, or question where they can be directed to your website for more like it or for the answers. 12) A calendar of your upcoming public performances. 13) The card could be a magnet to be used and seen on the fridge by the prospect. 14) Could have a listing of most common measurement conversion chart - gives them a reason to hold onto it for their use. 15) A list of your top 5 tips for a successful event. Keep in mind that there is nothing wrong with having your card be just a "calling card". If you have other marketing materials that have a call to action that you use, then a calling card may not be a bad way to go as it is a continuation of your brand identity. However, you could have your business card doing double duty by not only listing your contact information, but by having an effective call to action as well. No matter which direction you go in, always remember that your business card is a direct representation of what you do, what you are about, and the services you provide. Do not settle for second best or for a card that looks "cheap". A professional and high-quality card will say a lot about your services long before they even begin to read it. Make your card work for you. It is hard this day and age to get folks to understand that the first impression you often ever make on a prospect is in the materials you send out to them. If this is the case, why wouldn't you want these materials to be designed in the best way possible? Too many folks have PCs and desktop publishing software. It is too easy to create artwork and get them done up that everyone thinks they can do it. What they forget to realize is that graphic design and communications through graphical means is a learned skill, and one that takes a long time to understand and to do well. As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your thoughts. So if you have any thoughts on my articles or suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly at magic4u02@aol.com. I would love to hear from you. Please check out my many ebooks and books at my product site at http://www.kpmagicproducts.com. It would be most appreciated. Thank you. Kyle -------------------------------------------- 9. Anthony Darkstone Brook in Conversation with John Palfreyman - Part 4 -------------------------------------------- Message by Anthony Darkstone Brook - Europe/USA ADB: Well ..that's the idea ..you are not just talking about British Magical History you are actually a part of it . let your memories flow . JP: Well alright Tony I guess you are right . at my age I am as you say a part of that History . and whilst I'm in the mood let's start with my birth and move on from there . covering some 80+ years is not easy but I'll give it a go . At 7-46 a.m. on the 22nd October 1925, at "Hyde Green" Millbrook, near Stalybridge in what was then the county of Cheshire, later to be encompassed by the new county of Greater Manchester, was born to Annie Doris Palfreyman & Thomas Victor Palfreyman, a 7lb.15oz. son. The House where I was born was about three quarters of a mile away from any other dwelling and typical of the granite houses in the area, which had walls about two feet thick, helping to keep the house warm in winter and cool in summer. There was no Gas, Electricity, Mains water, Drainage or Sewage connected to the house. Open Log and Coal fires supplied the heating in the main rooms, whilst paraffin heaters were used in the bedrooms. Incandescent paraffin lamps provided the lighting in the main rooms, whilst at bedtime, the way to, and in the bedrooms lighting was by candlelight, and for a young child, candlelight can shed some eerie and frightening shadows. Maybe the mystery and magic began then .perhaps the images stayed in my mind and were resurrected during my illusion building days!! Water was obtained from a well outside the door, during the winter, and in summer from a spring which was about 200 yards away from the house. Bath time was in front of the fire in a "Bungalow bath" which was a long galvanized metal bath, the water for it being heated in a large under fired cast iron boiler in the scullery, the water being carried from boiler to bath in buckets, and after the bath the water was emptied into a gully in the scullery, . .who knows where the water went to, probably it filtered through the ground back into the well! Now the final "JOY" ?! the lavatory, this was a simple "earth closet" in the field directly behind the house. A hole dug in the ground and a small hut with a seat placed over it, then when necessary the hole filled in and a new one dug . . . . You could tell where old diggings were by the better quality of plants and grasses growing there . . . . "Composting and recycling at its best". A few years ago, Dorothy Savage and I re-visited the house. It now has all mod cons, and the owner was highly amused when I told her about the "Earth Closet" she always wondered why the vegetation was lush in the field behind the house, so the mystery was solved. My Father worked in a linen warehouse in Manchester, in his spare time kept a small-holding with poultry and the odd pig and cow. Mother was, as were most women of that era, a "Housewife" in the true sense of the word, she did all the cooking over an open hearth fire, with the cooking pots being suspended on a bar across the fire, whilst baking was done in an under-draught oven. To one side was a small "Hot Water Boiler" with a little tap at the front of it, so as long as one remembered to keep it topped up, we had constant hot water. Flour, Rice, Sugar, Salt, Lard, Margarine, and other such commodities, were bought not by the pound, but by the sack or drum. We made our own Butter, and cream cheese, had our own egg supply. When we slaughtered a pig we enjoyed home-cured bacon and ham. Coal for heating and cooking was delivered twice a year, 2 to 3 tons at a time, whilst paraffin about 40 to 50 gallons was delivered three times a year. From the time I could walk and comprehend things, I helped my Father to collect the "Free range" eggs, which was no mean task as in the Spring and Summer the hens laid their eggs in all manner of places, such as in holes under `dry stone walls` nests under hawthorn hedges and bramble bushes, and even on the moor edge - one cannot say how many eggs were missed. during late Autumn and Winter the collection of eggs was made much easier, the hens were all in deep litter areas inside two barns and what a job it was to herd them into the barns. (If you think sheep have minds of their own you should try herding hens!) - Training for a Mentalist! By the age of four I could milk a cow, pluck a chicken and control a pair of "Shire Horses" pulling the large Roller, or the Chain Harrow, over the fields. Could set a snare and catch rabbits and hares. Oh yes ! and many other good skills that I put to use in my performances . How? Well. you'll have to buy the book to find out . For the most part of my pre-school life I ran wild across the fields and moor, often playing with the children of a Gipsy family when they set their caravans in an old disused quarry near to our house, where I first taste hedgehog baked in clay. The only things that curtailed my activities were either illness or being snow bound, the latter lasting sometimes up to six weeks, and an old tin tray made a super toboggan. During one of our "Snow bound" sessions I remember one morning my Father setting off for work and walking on what he thought was the path down the hill, but in actual fact he was walking on the top of a dry stone wall, and when he turned by a Crab Apple tree where the path turned he disappeared in to about six feet of snow. In his overcoat pockets he was carrying eggs as also in a case, the remarkable thing was that all the eggs in his pockets survived whilst most of those in the case were smashed. An early version of Malini's egg bag! I don't think so.. Holidays were mainly spent at a little village called Rowsley in the county of Derbyshire with my Grandmother and Granddad who was a train driver - and yes I did actually get to travel with him on a few occasions on the footplate, and help him "Drink his sweet tea out of a bottle" which was kept hot by the firing box, and during these holidays we regularly visited my Grandmothers Brothers and Sisters who lived in the area, these being my Great Aunts and Great Uncles, one of the Great Uncles - Uncle Joe was Chauffer to the Duke of Devonshire, and one of my Great Aunts had a shop in the next village, Beeley. With regard to Aunty Nell who had the shop at Beeley, she was very annoyed with my Granddad who on one occasion bet me sixpence that I could not keep still or quiet for 5 minutes - I won the bet and spent it at the shop on 24 separate farthings worth of different sweets. (A Farthing being 1 quarter of an old English Penny) End Part 4 -------------------------------------------- 10. Tina Lenert Speaks -------------------------------------------- Message by Mike Caveney (US) After spending decades performing nothing but silent magic Tina recently gave her first lecture for magicians at the Magic Castle. The lecture is called Find Yourself by Connecting the Dots and it describes how she approached magic and life as she designed four different acts. It was a huge success as you can see from Dustin Stinett's review that appeared on the Genii Forum the next day: http://www.geniimagazine.com/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=262018#Post262018. Tina also prepared a beautiful set of lecture notes that can be found at http://www.mcmagicwords.com/books_tinalenert_lecture.html. As you know word spreads quickly in the magic world and she now has booked additional lectures around the world that fit in with her wide-ranging performance schedule. June 2 Kramien's Jamboree - Newburg, Oregon June 4 - Edmonton, Canada June 18 - Bakersfield, California July 26 Essential Magic Conference - Portugal August 6 - Midwest Magic Shop, Chicago, Illinois October 5 - Copiapo, Chile She looks forward to seeing many of you there and at future lectures as well. -------------------------------------------- 11. Imagine the thrill of a Mega Las Vegas Magic Convention with all the big name stars, fun and thrilling lectures, shows, and "extras" that make Las Vegas Conventions so exciting, and is combined with the "Down-to-earth", hometown charm that is a Midwestern convention like Abbotts or M.A.E.S. - that is what AbraCORNdabra is all about! What would it be like to attend one of those Big Vegas Conventions with more than a dozen Magical Stars - but there were only 150 to 200 of you in attendance? It means more time with the stars and everyone gets to know each other! You are not merely a "number" at AbraCORNdabra - you are a magical star in your own right - rubbing elbows with the working pros. Uri Geller In Italy At SV2012 Magic Congress -------------------------------------------- Message by Fabio Capomazza His presence at the Congress of Magic Saint-Vincent is in itself an event: Uri Geller is one of the biggest mysteries in the history of magic. A letter from Uri: This year I will be visiting Italy, 'which is really where my career first took off Internationally! Here's a funny story; Probably before you were born, there was a guy Called Uri Geller, When Uri Became famous in Israel (his homeland) in 1968, his manager wanted to get him blackberries great publicity so he arranged Uri to meet Sophia Loren and Carlo Ponti in Rome. The meeting took place in her house and freaked out Sophia Loren when Uri bent a spoon for her, but Carlo Ponti did not allow Uri to be photographed with her, I went back to Tel Aviv Uri very disappointed, but unknown to him his manager stayed in Rome and made a very bad photomontage (photoshop was not invented yet) of Uri and Sofia and sent it to the Israeli press who Immediately knew it was a fake picture, and poor Uri woke up in the morning to find this picture splashed on the front covers of all the papers in Israel! Well this young Uri left Israel in 1972 and went straight to Rome where his career began! This is my Italian connection! So, to all of you who enjoyed my performances all these years it will be a great pleasure to meet you all in Italy very soon. I respect every one of you and I'm sending you much love and energy.
