Magic Factory Owner Pleads Guilty --------------------------------------------- Article forwarded on by William Bowers http://medford.patch.com/articles/magic-factory-owner-pleads-guilty-sentencing-set Magic Factory Owner Pleads Guilty, Sentencing Set Harry Levy pleaded guilty to charges of credit card fraud and issuing false statements Friday. Harry Levy appeared in U.S. District Court in Boston Friday to plead guilty to charges stemming from charging a customer of his Medford magic store over $500,000 in unauthorized fees and misleading federal investigators. Levy, 61, of Lexington is scheduled to return to court July 20 to be sentenced. The owner of Hank Lee's Magic Factory signed a plea agreement earlier this month on the charges, which stem from him making 134 unauthorized transactions on a customer's American Express card totaling $561,927 between 2009 and 2011, according to court documents. He appeared in court Friday to waive indictment and formally enter guilty pleas. In exchange for the guilty pleas, prosecutors won't charge him with wire fraud or aggravated identity theft, according to a plea agreement. When he is sentenced, Levy will have to forfeit assets including the $561,927 stemming from the credit card fraud, according to the plea agreement. The agreement calls for Levy to "take whatever steps are necessary to ensure that assets subject to forfeiture are not sold, disbursed, wasted, hidden or otherwise made unavailable." The credit card charge carries up to a 15 year sentence and the false statements charge 5 years, but the plea agreement said prosecutors will be seeking the "low end" of sentencing guidelines. The agreement also calls for Levy to pay restitution. The agreement did not call for Levy to close the Magic Factory, and its website has remained open and taking orders as of Friday afternoon. -------------------------------------------- 5. Magicol No. 182 - A Down Under Special Issue -------------------------------------------- Message by Julie Eng Magicol No. 182 is finally at the printers! We have another great issue lined up. Following John Mulholland's lead from 1943 when he dedicated an entire issue of The Sphinx to the magic and magicians of Australia, in this issue of Magicol we, too, focus on articles and reviews (assembled primarily by Brian McCullagh) about magic in the land Oz. To start off, Brian gives us a broad-stroke perspective on Australian collections in comparison to American and European ones. Next, we have a virtual tour of Sydney by Brian McCullagh as he explores the city through its magic emporiums from the past and present. Gerald Taylor and Lynda Holmes take us on a second city tour, this time, looking at the great Sights and Scenes of Melbourne. We are then treated to an overview of the massive WG Alma Conjuring Collection as told by the collection's caretaker, Dominique Dunstan, Librarian, Arts Team, State Library of Victoria. And WHAT a collection it is! The online resource alone, is quite astounding! We enjoy both a history of the collection and a biography about its former owner, Will Alma, and his history with magic. Keeping with our Aussie theme, Clay Shevlin contributes a special edition of his column, Librarium Magicum, and focuses on The Annals of Conjuring and the Aussie Connection. Next up, David Ben reviews the 12th Los Angeles Conference on Magic History (November 2011) for the Conference Corner. David also provides a sneak peek of our forthcoming convention, the 43rd Magic Collectors Weekend, May 10-12 (Chicago), by outlining the chocker-block schedule. For No. 182's book reviews, we chose to include book reviews following the Down Under theme. Reviews include: Chung Ling Soo's Mechanists - They Stayed Behind, reviewed by Peter Rodgers; Deception Downunder: A Look at Magic in Australia, reviewed by Steve Walker; Magical Nights at the Theatre, reviewed by Brian McCullagh; Magical Reminiscences, reviewed by Kent Blackmore; and Sydney's Magic Heritage, reviewed by Peter Rodgers. To close the issue, Gabe Fajuri shares a lovely reflection on a famous Aussie, Percy Abbott. Remarkable Magic. #31 - Nick Lewin -------------------------------------------- Message by Nick Lewin (US) It was a perfect night for a séance! (part one) There are two large black footlockers in our garage amongst the magic muddle: if I ever want to panic my wife I just move them a little closer to being inside the house. The content of these trunks consist of the hardware necessary to present 'The Nick Lewin Celebrity Séance' Show. Inside the footlockers is a strange assortment of objects; black candles, jumbo tarot cards, glowing objects of all kind, a voodoo doll, lazy tongs of various lengths and about a dozen long black poles with swatches of luminous paint daubed cloth attached to the end. Add a bit of theatrical skill, more than a little nerve and the séance is complete. Those footlockers contain such a strange collection of items that it is amazing that they could create panic in anyone, especially my wife who after thirty-four years of marriage to me, is acquainted with most of the weirdness in the magic world. However panic they have created over the years! It would take a curiously deranged person to look at the ragged items in the footlockers and say, "There they are, just as I created them!" That particular deranged man, in this case, would be the one and only Eugene Burger. For these props are my realizations of the ideas in Mr. Burger's splendid handbook for the Séance giver 'Spirit Theater.' If you want to present a séance this is the only book on the subject you need to own. Given a place of honor in my magic cupboard is a superb set of Dr Q locking spirit slates that Eugene passed on to me to feature in the experiment. He seemed to feel you couldn't be a spirit medium without owning a set of these nifty gizmos. I suspect he is right because the toughest part in any séance is letting the audience know it is finished. The slates can get the message across, so to speak. I presented my first séance in 1978 at the Ice House in Pasadena. It was designed to bring back the spirit of Buddy Holly. In those days I didn't have much to scare the sitters when the lights went out. Curiously enough the crack that suddenly appeared in the lens of the thick horn rimmed glasses, borrowed from the Holly family, got the job done nicely and created a splendid reaction in those present. In fact the gasp from the audience when the cracked glasses were revealed may even have covered the sigh of relief that my wife Susan and I gave when we realized the damn thing was over! There were times prior to (and during!) the séance when I wished I had been in that plane with Ritchie Vallens, the Big Bopper and Buddy when they left the airport on that stormy night to fly to their next gig. These magical séances are curious things, they leave you elated, depleted and in no uncertain state of mind that this finally was the final one. However as you get hooked on their dark charms there is no such thing as a final séance; hence my wife's alarm at any sign that those footlockers are moving back into the house. I have performed about fifteen séances since that first one in Pasadena when we brought Buddy back from that great gig in the sky. Speaking for myself, which I am eminently qualified to do, my favorite was the Lenny Bruce Séance presented at Bally's in Las Vegas. It was a grand evening of laughs and chills. Scoping Out The Festival Market - #255 - Kyle Peron -------------------------------------------- Message by Kyle Peron (US) magic4u02@aol.com http://www.kpmagicproducts.com So you have a basic idea of festivals you are thinking of targeting. But, you are not quite sure what your show needs to be like or what the festivals are really looking for. If you are a true professional, you must really start to learn everything you can about your new market before diving head first into it. This is the time to do some travel homework and visit some of these festivals in and around your area. Go out to these festivals and scope them out. Do your homework. Get in the car and actually attend some of these festivals. This is a great way to get a feel for the event, to scope out current entertainment and staging and to pick up information that you can use. It helps you to get an idea of the type of entertainment they hire and what they do. It also allows you to see how different stages are set up and how often a performer works and how many shows he or she may do in a day. To find festivals in your area to attend, simply look at the list you have started or look in the papers and see what festivals are going on that weekend and then make an effort to check them out, look around and gather very important contact information. This way you can determine if they might be worth targeting for next year. It is not only a great way to learn and to get important information, but it is also a lot of fun as well. It is always best to be able to scope out the festivals you plan on targeting first. You can really determine what they are all about ahead of time and save you a lot of possible problems. If you can scope the festivals you want to target in advance, this will save you a lot of headaches. You can really learn what to expect, what problems they may have that you can solve for them and get a taste and feel for the atmosphere. If you go out to a festival there are also some things you will want to make sure NOT to do. These are what I call my do's and don'ts and they are general rules of thumb for when you are visiting and scoping out a festival for information. - Never go to a festival and start performing walk around style magic in hopes that this will generate a crowd and get you noticed. This does nothing more than really upset the entertainment and festival committee who has worked so hard to get entertainers there and it is rude to your fellow festival performers who can really be a big asset to you if you befriend them later on. Do not perform unless you are hired to do so or get in as a paying vendor. - Do not go there and hard sell your festival show. The festival day is a frantic and hectic pace for the festival group that has to run it and control all situations that come up. They simply just do not have the time to devote to you and your information will in most cases get lost in the hassle and bustle of the day. The best bet is to go to the information booth and just pick up some literature and information. Usually contacts can be found there and that is usually all you need to get started. - Do take notes and observe the staging areas, how many entertainers they have, what is the entertainment like and so forth. This is your time to really watch and learn as much as you can. Get a sense and feel for the festival. Even more importantly, find out ways in which your show can directly benefit this particular festival. If you can find solutions to problems that you see, then you can offer these solutions to the festival when you market to them. - Do take note of the vendors in the area and the types of vendors they have. Talk to a few of them if you can and get the chance to. By partaking of their wares or food, you can also start a nice conversation with them and perhaps learn some great information in the process. Just make sure you also learn to listen to them as well. Most vendors do a lot of festivals and their information and contacts could be valuable to you later. As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your thoughts. So if you have any thoughts on my articles or suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly at magic4u02@aol.com. I would love to hear from you. Please check out my many ebooks and books at my product site at http://www.kpmagicproducts.com. It would be most appreciated. Thank you. -------------------------------------------- 9. MINDvention 2012 - Las Vegas -------------------------------------------- Message by Danny Archer (US) MINDvention is thrilled to announce the upcoming lecture and performance of the world renowned German mentalist Satori. The man who knows almost everything. His interest in mentalism was enflamed at age twelve when he read the school library's copy of Ottokar Fischer's Das Wunderbuch der Magie (better known to English speaking magicians as Illustrated Magic), which included a section on mindreading. At about the same time he read a book by Ivan Pavlov on his famous experiments with conditioned reflexes and a detective novel featuring a hypnotist. Almost immediately he began his own experiments with contact mindreading and hypnotism, at one point hypnotizing his entire classroom of thirty pupils. Lacking literature that would allow him to further his studies in these areas and not knowing anyone else sharing his interests, he was forced to develop his own approaches. In 1967 he married a young woman named Anna-Luisa and as he now acknowledges this to have been the best decision he ever made. With her encouragement and assistance, he has continued to expand his repertoire of mentalism, which by then included mnemonic demonstrations in addition to contact mindreading and hypnotism. For the next decades Satori was able to present his performances under the most varied circumstances: at gala evenings, theaters, municipal centers, clubs, outdoor events and for groups ranging from a dozen to several thousand including theatrical engagements of his full two-hour program. At that time his full-evening program consisted of mnemonics, blindfold work, predictions, mindreading and contact mindreading. At the urging of magical friends, he entered a competition at the International Brotherhood of Magicians' European convention in Baden-Baden, Germany in 1992 and received a special prize for the best mental act. The following year, Germany's Magic Circle named him their "Magician of the Year". Later that year, he won first place in the mentalism category in their national competition, resulting in their sponsorship of his entry in that category at the worldwide FISM competition in Yokohama, Japan in 1994 where he again took top honors. Sponsored by Ted Lesley, Satori had joined the exclusive Psychic Entertainers Association (PEA) in 1993 and in 1996 they awarded him their highest honor, the Dunninger Memorial Award for "distinguished professionalism in the performance of mentalism." At a PEA convention it was Bill Myers who inspired Satori to write a book on contact mindreading titled "Making Contact", published by H & R Magic Books 1998. Today, Satori performs anywhere. His programs are now drawn from more than eight hours of available repertoire, not including his two hour hypnotism shows - a fact made all the more astonishing when one is familiar with his direct performing style. Eschewing paranormal bombast, he allows his amazing abilities to speak for him, with each effect generally lasting no more than a few minutes. He performs in German and English with audiences typically ranging from 500 to 3,000, though he is just as comfortable with small groups at private engagements or performing for millions of viewers in his increasingly frequent television appearances. Satori will be joining a stellar line-up of mentalism performers including; Kenton Knepper, Roy Zaltsman, Patrick Redford, Max Krause, Larry Hass and Colin McLeod. From November 11th to the 13th we will explore the Art of Mentalism in Las Vegas, NV.
