A Tempest at TED --------------------------------------------- Message by Stan Allen - Editor MAGIC Magazine TED stands for Technology, Entertainment, and Design. It is a nonprofit organization, founded in 1984, whose mission statement is about the power of ideas to change attitudes. "Ideas worth spreading" is their slogan, and each year in March TED hosts a major conference in Long Beach, California. The format is simple. The world's leading experts in the fields of technology, entertainment, and design give a short presentation on their specialty. The quality of the presentations is astonishing and they are later made available for free on the Web and elsewhere. The Financial Times referred to TED as "The Conference of Cool." For the fourth time, 21st century illusionist Marco Tempest was one of the "cool," presenting a combination of digital illusion and performance art. In this month's MAGIC Magazine, David Britland takes readers "behind the screens" with Marco Tempest. And that's just one of many stories in the May issue of MAGIC Magazine, now available in print and on your iPad. www.MAGICmagazine.com -------------------------------------------- 5. Chris Cox - Fatal Distraction -------------------------------------------- Review by Paul Romhany (NZ) On Monday night, a group of friends and I went to see a brand new show at the Auckland Comedy Festival, by UK Mentalist Chris Cox. We had all seen Chris two years ago when he was a headline act, and so were extremely excited to see his new show. I'm pleased to say he did not disappoint. What sets Chris apart from most other acts at these comedy festivals is that he doesn't have to rely on swearing to get embarrassed laughter. His show is incredibly smart, very well thought out, and one of the best productions of a mentalism show I have seen. He comes across as a charming, quirky guy, and has no problem getting people on stage to help him out. He has no hecklers because you don't feel like you want to heckle him. I found this interesting because having watched a few other comedy shows, I now realized that many of them invite people to heckle them due of the abuse they give the audience. I can see why his show was voted the best Comedy Show in the UK by Venue Magazine! It's a show everybody will enjoy, and not offend anybody. That will be one of the many reasons he travels the world with his show. Aside from the original effects in the show, Chris's skill lies in weaving a story throughout the fifty minute performance. He comes up with unique themes that are intertwined, and at the end all come together. It contains everything that makes a great play; an opening, middle and strong closing. To list each routine would take too much time, and I could not do it justice, suffice to say everything he did had an original twist. There were no store bought mentalism tricks here! A few personal highlights included:- His Drawing Duplication with three people from the audience which built to a very strong climax, and came as quite a surprise. His energy keeps the show moving along at a very fast pace, and each routine flows in to the other. During the fifty minute show, Chris took us all on an emotional roller coaster ride. It reminded me of watching a Chaplin movie, where one minute you are laughing and the next you have a tear in your eye. While it is a comedy festival, and the majority of comedy acts are out to make us laugh, Chris takes us on a journey with his mentalism. A lesson for every performer in how to structure a very strong one-person show. He brought 'theatre' in to mentalism, and at the end you wanted more. One of the strongest moments in the show involved an older couple holding a newspaper. Without giving the effect away, because it's something that you need to see, he was able to create a very special moment, and something everybody was talking about after the show. Perhaps what made it so unique was his use of the stage, lighting, and silence to create a wonderful theatrical moment. You could hear gasps from the crowd the moment the 'effect' happened. His Q&A was very different, and unlike any other Q&A I had seen. It was so strong that for a minute there I believed he was really reading minds! His energy is very high, and he is constantly building each 'piece' to a frenzy where the outcome is mind-blowing mentalism at its best. The Q&A got the entire audience involved and kept them all on the edge of their seats. The finale of the show reminded me of the ending of movie, The Usual Suspects, where right at the end everything that happened during the movie, or in this case the show comes together, and you get that 'Damn I didn't see that coming' moment. It was certainly an incredibly well scripted, well produced show, and highly entertaining and mystifying show. While Chris tells the audience he 'is a mentalist who can't read minds,' I am sure that there were audience members that night who left that theatre believing he could. Having seen several other comedy acts at this festival, the new Chris Cox Show - Fatal Distraction was by far the highlight for us all. Chris takes his show to the Wellington Comedy Festival then prepares for his upcoming US TV series. -------------------------------------------- 7. Remarkable Magic. #32 - Nick Lewin -------------------------------------------- Message by Nick Lewin (US) It was a perfect night for a séance! (Part two) Any story about my dip into the world of Séance entertainment without a couple of good Ross Johnson stories especially the Lenny Bruce séance. Ross Johnson was my co-host for this particular event and Ross is a performer I hold in high esteem. However I had no idea how potentially disturbed he was until our dress rehearsal for the Vegas event; which was held in the Oak Brook suburb of Chicago. Ross began to unpack his personal séance equipment; there was the fetal casket, the pentagram that dripped blood etc. etc. I took a double look at Ross and noticed that his eyes gleamed just a little too much for the superb corporate entertainer I knew him to be. I had assumed that as the crazed comedy performer in the team I would lead the way in any madness. Dream on, Nick! Ross and I didn't actually have any effects at all to enliven the dark segment of the séance other than Johnson's brilliant Q & A and a picture of Lenny Bruce, attached to a length of thread being held by Jon Stetson in the audience. Jon had surprised us by arriving unannounced minutes prior to show time and was thrown into covert duties instantly. Magic Magazine recently spent several pages of a cover story trying to define Stetson. They missed out the most elemental one of all; he is the magician who is most often in the right place at the right time. I bet Jon will tell you the same thing. Showtime arrived and just as the séance was about to commence a thunderstorm broke out in the gray Illinois skies. A bolt of thunder and a flash of lightning filled the room causing the shutters behind us to bust wide open with a loud clatter. The audience chuckled with the prospect of upcoming fun and games. Ross and I just looked at each other with wry looks of uneasiness, as we were the only ones present that knew this was an unplanned addition to the event. Even Stetson must have been fairly impressed. He had plenty of time to observe the action as a cocktail waitress had walked through the thread he was holding and caused a premature departure of the 8x10 of Lenny from wall to floor. It fell totally unnoticed to the ground: so much for our big finale! The séance was a blast and Johnson and Lewin rocked the room, perhaps a little too much, as during the course of the events a grown man fainted and fell from his stool to the ground. The event was powerful and impressive and totally unsuited to its location and audience. I loved every minute of it. Unlike Ross, who had the added pressure of actually living in Chicago! Two weeks later Ross and I presented the séance again in Las Vegas on Halloween night creating something of a press sensation and twice selling out the 500-seat theater at Bally's. I have presented other celebrity séances since but this one will always be my favorite. The very best part of the séance biz is hearing the reactions as people exit the showroom. Some people walk up and earnestly grasp you hand and whisper, "You know! You really know!" Others give you a nudge and a wink and thank you for the fun. The correct response to everyone is an impassive smile and the words, "Thank You." If you decide to try out this séance business for yourself my wife will probably be delighted to sell you everything you need already packaged in two black footlockers. Add equal parts magician, mentalist and Elmer Gantry and you are ready to go. Enjoy! Email me at nicklewin1@me.com -------------------------------------------- 8. Magical Healing - #256 - Kyle Peron -------------------------------------------- Message by Kyle Peron (US) magic4u02@aol.com http://www.kpmagicproducts.com A friend of mine posted something on Facebook talking about how magic allowed him to get over his Autism. It taught him how to act and interact and taught him social skills. We both shared our stories and I felt I should share mine with you. If I can help anyone who may be experiencing what I did, then that to me would be well worth the effort typing this out. I started losing my hearing when I was age 8. I am now about 65% deaf in both ears. Imagine growing up not hearing what others hear and basically being treated well...different. My family and friends always treated me right and fair. But I certainly was not that outgoing or at least not in the way most kids were. I hid behind a lot of things simply out of fear of being the focus. I never wanted anyone looking at me like some sort of oddball. I was told many times by many people that I would not be able to do things and that it was too hard. They all meant well as they were protecting me I guess. My folks and my family never held me back...ever. It was them that always made me want to do new things and try new hobbies. They never ever told me no or you can't do that. That is why to this day I have so many hobbies and so many interests. If there was something I wanted to do, I simply did it. I learned that failure is never failure if you learn from it. I will tell you I failed a LOT at things. lol But I would do it all over again. Every failure helped me to learn something new. Every failure pushed me forward to reach a new goal. I always enjoyed trying something that intrigued me. I guess the fact that I couldn't hear well made me realize that quitting on something because it is hard is not a good enough reason. Magic was one of the things that broke me out of my mold. It allowed me to discover who I was and who I could be. It allowed me to gain confidence in myself. It taught me that I could do anything I put my mind to doing. The sheer notion of being on a stage in front of people scared me to death. I forced myself out there shaking like a leaf because I wanted to do it. I wanted to say, "yes I did it!". Not for anyone else but ME. I also wanted folks to be proud of me. If I could do something hearing people could not do, that would be something special. That notion healed me inside in a very different kind of way. That first smile and that first applause I got from an audience was better than any medicine I ever took. It was better than anything any doctor could ever do for me. Man what a feeling it was. I never knew it at the time, but today I can tell you it was a feeling of simply being accepted. I was never quite use to people and strangers liking me just for being ME. This is always why I hid behind me doing things. I took up art so that people would like the art and then like me for it. I took up drumming for the same reason. I was never used to being the total focus and having people stare at me in a GOOD way simply for me being me. I was more used to people not quite understanding this strange little kid. Magic has taken me around the world and has given me the chance to do things I thought I would never EVER get a chance to do. It has opened up doors and it has healed me inside. It still does to this very day. I now always remember what magic did for me and what it still does. This is why I smile at every show and why I give 100% effort every time out. It makes me view magic in a different way. Magic is not something I WANT to do. It is something I HAVE to do. If I never got paid a dime for performing this art, I would still be doing it. I always take time after my shows to meet and greet the audience. Many wonder why I do it and why not just collect the check and head home or to the next gig. I do it because I realized that THESE audiences is what has healed me over the years. Without the audience who am I really? I am a lonely person standing on stage by myself. My audiences help me and in return it is my pleasure to try and help them. If I can give a smile or make someone laugh for even a few minutes, then that to me is giving back. I know magic means more to me then to some performers. I never will take the art of magic for granted. To me it is a gift I will cherish as long as I have the ability to make a difference. Thanks for letting me share this with you. As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your thoughts. So if you have any thoughts on my articles or suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly at magic4u02@aol.com. I would love to hear from you. Please check out my many ebooks and books at my product site at http://www.kpmagicproducts.com. It would be most appreciated. Thank you. -------------------------------------------- 9. Anthony Darkstone Brook in Conversation with Eric Evans - Part 1 -------------------------------------------- Message by Anthony Darkstone Brook - Europe/USA Anthony Darkstone Brook .In Conversation With Eric Evans To refer to Eric Evans as a well-traveled World Class Magician would be something of an understatement. Granted there may be other Magical Entertainers that have traveled to a few more International locations than him - however, the majority, like myself, get off an airplane, are picked up and taken to a Convention or show venue, we strut our stuff, give our lecture, give our performances, take some photos, sign autographs and maybe if we are lucky and time permits, grab a little down-time sightseeing and then it's back to the airport headed for home or another location. Eric Evans has done all of that.and more .. He has literally performed as a Street Entertainer for 35 years in more streets than an average Tourist may visit in a lifetime or two. He is a highly accomplished and skilled street Magician who has perfected the Art of conjuring to a degree that is rarely seen nowadays. Although he has performed at Conventions and other stage venues he is primarily a World Class Street Performer. Sadly, no longer with us, Jim Cellini was considered by many knowledgeable people to be The King of Street Magicians - a well-earned and well deserved title that he held for several decades. Others like myself, referred to him as The Emperor. Thousands of years of Universal Laws confirm that greatness attracts greatness. How fortunate that Eric and Jim would enjoy a friendship and a Mentor/Student relationship for many years. I was greatly honored to have spent quality time with the both of them in Fort Worth, Texas. I am honored to have a priceless photograph of the three of us in the street holding a paper cup into which Walter "Zany" Blaney is dropping a few quarters. Ever since I started this series, I have always wanted to have Eric as a guest. I am delighted to have the opportunity to make that happen. www.thesecretartofmagic.com http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LzAylHuUpaA&feature=youtu.be ADB: Hello Eric. Great to catch up with you. It has a long while . how's that great lady of yours and your family? EE : Hi Tony. It's great to talk with you again, it has been awhile. Where does the time go? Dawn and the children are just fine. Thanks for asking. ADB: Good to know. I'm not only asking just because I know Dawn and the children but also because I know that you are a great family man and that your family is very important to you. Whenever it is possible, you all travel together. Share with us a little of your family details on travel and some of your adventures on the road .. EE: Well. that's right Tony. I am very happy and thankful to be referred to as a family man. I like my family around me. That is not always possible but whenever I am home I try and make the most of it I can. As to adventures on the road and funny stories . there are so many stories over the years as you can imagine. However since we had our second and third child, it became ever more rare that we could all travel together. As a result, for several years now I've been traveling by myself. Well last year I was able to take my son with me on a tour through Europe. It was an amazing experience for us both. ADB: I know exactly what you mean Eric. I enjoy whenever possible traveling with my son. You know my son and you both once shared a stage together some years ago. Back in New Orleans at The S.A.M 2001. You won an award there if I recall. Share with us some memories from back then, why you competed and the Award that you won . EE: Yes! You mentioned my family but meeting you with your family, that was special. I well remember meeting Charles for the first time and his electrifying performance at TAOM. That was a great time we all had .. .let me see it was The Stage Contest.. and I competed because I wanted to test my mettle I suppose. I wondered if I took what I knew of Stage Manipulation, and created a routine, an act, and wanted to see how it might be received by the Magic community. Keeping in mind as well that such an act might also play well to an exceedingly large European terrace somewhere, with live musical accompaniment of course. I entered my act in two competitions: The TAOM and then the S.A.M. At TAOM in 2000, I won the top prize. In New Orleans I was awarded The Mystic Craig Award for Professional Promise. I was overjoyed and took it as a gesture of encouragement, as if to say," go home, work a bit more and then come back next year, see how you do." Ah! New Orleans in the beautiful and historic Sanger Theater. What a rare pleasure that was to play in such a place! That was a great S.A.M convention. End of Part 1 -------------------------------------------- 10. The Magic Circle's Thirty-Sixth Collectors' Day -------------------------------------------- Message by Edwin A Dawes (UK) The Magic Circle's Thirty-Sixth Collectors' Day, which is open to non-members, will be held at their HQ, the Centre for the Magic Arts, Euston, on Saturday 26th May. It is perhaps worth mentioning that the historical title of the Day is really a misnomer for the topics covered encompass a much wider range of interests and are enjoyed by many regular attendees who are not magic collectors. The proceedings open at 10.00 a.m. with coffee in the Clubroom and the programme commences at 10.45 in the Theatre with a welcome from Vice-President Scott Penrose who will introduce Eddie Dawes, the Chairman for the Day's activities. Topically, in this bicentennial year of the birth of that great writer Charles Dickens, the first speaker will be Trevor Dawson, whose book titled Charles Dickens: Conjurer, Mesmerist and Showman is just published. Whilst it is well known among magicians that Dickens was an amateur conjurer, little is known of his performances and his other non-literary interests. He was an accomplished hypnotist, friendly with Robert-Houdin and Ludwig Döbler, was obsessed with Astley's Circus, and crusaded against fraudulent spiritualists, not to mention his fine acting and the rapturously acclaimed public Readings of his works in Europe and America. These are the subjects of Trevor's lecture. The next speaker will be Matt Field, the recently retired Editor of The Magic Circular under whose skills the magazine was transformed into its present splendid format, who will focus on Magic's Most Prolific Author, a title that conceals the identity of his subject. There can be few magicians who have not read and benefited from the manifold writings of Karl Fulves, the reclusive mystery man of Teaneck, New Jersey, editor of many magazines, among others The New Phoenix, Pallbearers Review and Epilogue, and author of treatises on card magic as well as a series of popular books published by Dover. Most magicians know little about the man himself but that situation will now be changed with Matt's all-encompassing survey of the man and his life's work as he justifies the title of his talk. This leads to Lunch, served in the Devant Room, and an opportunity to chat and admire the exhibits in the showcases before returning to the Theatre. The afternoon session commences with our only overseas speaker, Margaret Steele, a New York-based magician, musician and writer, and authority on Adelaide Herrmann, on whom she lectures and also portrays in stage performance. Adelaide was a superstar of the Golden Age of Magic with a career embracing dancer, trick bicyclist, illusion partner and, finally, as a magician in her own right. With her husband, Alexander Herrmann, they presented a spectacular Illusion show in Europe and the Americas for twenty-two years until Alexander's death in 1896. In 1899 she made her solo debut in Vaudeville as America's only professional female magician, a career she maintained successfully for twenty-eight years. While Adelaide Herrmann was known to have written a memoir entitled Sixty-Five Years of Magic, it did not appear after her death in 1932 but finally surfaced in 2010. It forms the basis for Margaret's book, Adelaide Herrmann, Queen of Magic-Memoirs, Published Writings and Collected Ephemera, published in 2011, and her London lecture, which reveals much new information about the magical Herrmann dynasty, the tempestuous relationship between the brothers, Alexander and Compars Herrmann, affords backstage details of the spectacular Herrmann show, providing a close-up portrait of Alexander Herrmann and giving new insights into his personality and his magic. After a break for afternoon tea, the focus of the final session shifts from the biographical to collecting. Ian Barradell, an acclaimed professional close-up corporate entertainer, whose collecting passion is Tenyo Magic and possesses what is believed to be the second largest assemblage of Tenyo tricks in the world, opens up for us the fascinating products of this Japanese Company. Although originally associated with toy shops, Tenyo has progressed phenomenally in the intervening years since its first magic set appeared in 1949 and its tricks are now stocked by the majority of reputable magic dealers. Ian will survey the range of ingenious tricks that have been marketed, including some rare items from his collection. There will also be an Exhibition mounted in the Devant Room displaying 'Some Treasures from the Collection of Trevor Dawson' Additionally there will be a sale of books surplus to the requirements of The Magic Circle Library . Collectors' Day is organised on behalf of The Magic Circle by Eddie Dawes and Peter Lane. Tickets (including lunch and afternoon tea) are £40.00 and available from The Magic Circle, The Centre for the Magic Arts, 12 Stephenson Way, London NW1 2HD Tel. 020 7387 2222 Email cma@themagiccircle.co.uk Payment may be made by cheque (payable to 'The Magic Circle') or by Visa / Mastercard. ------------------------------------------- 11. Innovention 2012 -------------------------------------------- Message by Paul Stone The Innovention is without doubt Magic's Best Kept Secret! That's why you haven't heard any details yet about this unique Convention. You probably know that it is taking place at the Gold Coast Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas from September 30 - October 3, and that it is dedicated to Master Magician and world renowned Hypnotist, the 'Impossibilist', Peter Reveen, but you don't know much more than that. Well, you will be hearing a lot about it very soon! The Innovention is not for everybody, in fact it is only for around 200 people because we deliberately keep the number of registrations low, but the quality of the event high! The line-up of talent will be outstanding, and you won't find many of the same old names but several rising stars and also a few hidden gems, and of course a sprinkling of very special VIP guests too. And the great thing about the Innovention is that we make sure that you will be able to meet and spend time with all the performers and Stars. The sessions and workshops will be different from the usual Convention fare and the shows will be fast moving, entertaining and professionally produced, with top class technical support. We predict that as soon as we announce the line-up, the Innovention will become a 'Hot Ticket' event. Half of the registrations have already been snapped up and we haven't really begun to advertise yet. For more details and to find out how to register, go to info@innovention2012.com but don't delay too long as this innovative and exciting event, which is unlike ANY other Magic Convention in Las Vegas or anywhere else, will sell out fast!
