Message by Paul Daniels (UK)

I have launched an app to app-eal to the magicians of today. In its basic form it does the work of the old 'Add a Number' pad, but after a couple of sessions with the developer, he went away and added in all the ideas I had dreamed up. It's already getting me lots of new Twitter followers who are giving it good reviews and comments.

The Secret Is Out
The Historic North Theatre to Reopen

August 15, 2012-Danville, VA-Celebrity magician and World Champion Illusionist Wayne Alan, the new owner of The Historic North Theatre, announced that the Gala Grand Reopening will take place on August 25th. That is the 65th Anniversary, to the day, of the opening of the North in 1947. The grand reopening will feature Mr. Alan's own show-Magic of the Masters-the World's Most Famous Illusions-a modern look at Magic's Golden Oldies. It is a family friendly show with a touch of Broadway, Las Vegas and Branson combined. This big stage magic show will be the theaters' resident show (Like Shear Madness at the Kennedy Center which has been there for over 20 years.) and will be presented on the second Saturday of each month.

In addition to the public being invited to the gala reopening, invitations are being sent to city, county and state dignitaries and officials. In addition, Mr. Alan, who has performed thirteen times at the White House, will be sending a personal invitation to President Obama. Prior to the gala on August 25th the theatre will have a soft opening, beginning on August 23rd, featuring Mr. Alan's Close-Up Magic Show in the Balcony Mini Theatre.

Tickets can be purchased on the theatre's new website:
www.TheNorthTheatre.com or by calling the box office at 434-793-SHOW (7469).
The theatre will be booking top celebrity touring concerts and shows to perform in this beautiful 500-seat venue. They will also host a number of other productions, festivals and special events. The goal is to provide top quality, wholesome and family friendly entertainment. The new owner said, "We will strive to live up to the North's first advertisement in the 1947 newspaper: "Visit Danville's new and finest theatre for the best in entertainment."

Since owning this performing arts center in January (Friday the 13th was his first full day of ownership), Mr. Alan has overseen much restoration and renovation to the theatre in preparation of the reopening. He said, "Ronnie Dillon of the localfirm Dillon Construction has done a beautiful job of replacing the façade of the middle building that fell last fall. I think he especially did a great job by matching the historic look of the theatre."

The schedule of shows includes:

Thurs., August 23-Preview Show-Magic of the Masters Close-Up Magic Show starring celebrity magician Wayne Alan in the Balcony Mini Theatre. Only 100 seats will be available for this intimate show of world class sleight of hand.

Magic and Mentalism.

I have been a fan and student of mentalism since I was a teenager, studying the performers and literature of this genre very carefully. I grew up watching Al Koran, Chan Canasta, The Great Fogel and David Berglas on British television, and consider them powerful early influences. I was lucky enough to become a friend of the great Maurice Fogel and learned much from him. Mentalism has come a long way since I sat watching those performers on our old black and white 'telly' in England.

At this time mentalism is probably the fastest growing and most commercial form of magic. There I said it! However, in spite of my love for this branch of magic, I have never been tempted to become a committed 'Mind Reader.' I guess it largely falls back on a slightly abstract and existential belief/observation.

If you construct a show entirely of 'mental magic' it is easy to get caught up in an, 'I'm smarter than you, and have powers you don't'--- kind of syndrome. This has never felt comfortable to me; I find it somewhat distasteful, rather like the 'I'm fooling you......' school of magic. If you are not careful you can end up looking strangely precious and pretentious, without even knowing it.

I have seen many lesser mentalists bask onstage in the reflected glory of non-existent powers that their audiences just don't buy into. In fact sometimes it looks like the 'Mind Reader' is fooling himself more than his spectators. When this happens it makes me highly uncomfortable.

Most of those early mentalists I used to watch perform in the 60s, made quite a deal of proclaiming that there was nothing supernatural or indeed psychic about their work. A disclaimer early on in their shows would impress upon their audiences that everything they accomplished was done so by purely natural means. My guess is that they didn't want to be confused with some of the charlatans populating the fringe areas of their world. I can understand this, but can't help feeling it was a little counter intuitive to their best results.

I liked the easy authority that Koran brought to the art when he blended magic and mind reading into one show. He saw no problem mixing the two together and neither did his audiences. In fact the mentalism was strengthened by his synergistic approach to the mixing of the two elements and it never weakened the audience's reaction to his feats. Here was a remarkable man who did remarkable things. Isn't that enough!

The opening words to Koran's show were, " Tonight I'm going to read your minds, but some of you may think it's a trick, so what I'm going to do is show you a trick and then read your minds, and let you tell the difference." I really like the attitude and style contained in these words. They left some 'wriggle room' in the mind of his audience. This approach remains my preferred way to create a powerful impact without backing yourself into a corner.

I would have to say that Uri Geller has been the most important and pivotal figure in the steady transformation of mentalism as a contemporary force in magical entertainment. He did something very simple - he pretty much implied that what he did was real!

Once the initial uproar over Geller's claims to legitimacy was over, for the most part, things moved in different direction. Magician/mentalists began to suggest that their ability to influence ongoing events was due to a superior understanding of psychology and psychological processes.

Max Maven, for whom I have the utmost respect as a thinker, performer, person and magical philosopher, created a truly elegant framework for his persona based on his (pretty darn realistic) statements about his psychological and linguistic skills. He made the presentation of mental magic seem more realistic and reasonable without ever allowing his effects to be less devastating in their impact. His exploration and transformation of mentalism has revolutionized the field. Max's books, treatises and video output is a phenomenal gift to the magic world - study them.

Recently, in England, Derren Brown has captivated an entire nation with his contemporary take on mental/psychological magic. He looks and acts in a highly effective manner, which allows his viewers to ascribe any skills or powers to him without being hokey for even a nano-second. He acts, speaks and dresses like a successful young businessman and entertainer. Does this mean that large segments of the public do not believe him to be a true psychic? Of course not!

Suddenly every magician seems to want to be a mind reader! However I am a firm believer that the future of mentalism, lies not in every magician proclaiming himself to be psychic, but in a steady progression of intelligently combining these two aspects of our craft. Currently mindreading is a highly commercial act for a buyer to book, but I think this is a golden goose waiting to become an overworked cliché with overexposed golden eggs.

Check out my website, which contains a product line that includes magic and mentalism! It is also going to feature some neat ways to combine them, in what I consider to be a highly commercial manner. I am uploading two very cool items; a TV interview with Max Maven from my 90s Fox series 'The Entertainment Files' and excerpts from an audio interview with the incredibly smart and talented mentalist Marc Paul. 6. Fairs vs Festivals - #269 - Kyle Peron
--------------------------------------------
Message by Kyle Peron (US)
magic4u02@aol.com
http://www.kpmagicproducts.com
http://www.facebook.com/perondesign

Before you decide to dive into performing at fairs and festivals it is important that one discuss is the differences between each. Often times these terms get used together when in reality they really are two totally different markets and must be treated, handled and marketed to differently.

In a nutshell, festivals are usually no more than 2 day local events and in most cases are usually done in a single day on the weekend. The budgets are usually smaller then the fairs. Fairs, however, are much bigger in scope and size and often run about a week or more. Their budgets are much bigger in size as they have more needs to attend to and address each year.

Festivals are perfect to start out in because they are smaller in scale and because you will find there are much more of them in the area or areas where you want to work. Generally speaking, every township and municipality has several festival-like events each year. if this is the case, then multiply every township in your area by about 3 festivals a year and you get some good idea of the amount of festivals you can really tap into. Pretty staggering isn't it?

Fairs, on the other hand, tend to be larger is size, but there are also fewer of them in your location. It may mean traveling greater distances to acquire the fair you may want to work. Most states have and run their own fair annually and that is a good place to start if you are ready for this larger market.

Another important difference between festivals and fairs is in the way they operate annually. Festivals tend to be organized and run by local township and community patrons. They are usually set up as volunteers who agree for the year to fill the roles of entertainment chairperson, vendor chair etc. They have several meetings prior to the event to get things organized and then each chair person spends the time setting up and meeting the requirements set out for them at the meetings. These people sometimes change each year as new people come on board and volunteer to take over.

Fairs, however, tend to be run and organized by the fair organization. These are usually hired and employee people whos job it is to get the fair set up and organized each year. The names and people do not change as much each year since they operate more like a company would.

Just because the festivals may seem a bit more mis-managed or done on a lower level, should not discourage you. In fact it actually is a blessing for you in a lot of ways. Because these people are volunteers, it means you have more knowledge on entertainment then they have. This means that you can become a "solutions provider" for them. You can understand their needs and wants and better be able to offer them the solutions they are after. This then increases your value to them and can mean not only landing the gig, but also making additional income by MCing their shows or even finding other entertainers to fill the other spots they need to fill.

I would suggest staying away from fairs when first starting out in this market. I know they last longer and that means more paid days, but they really do not take "unknowns" and it is much harder to get your information into the proper hands who make the decisions. You also usually have to belong to the IAFE (the main fair and expo organization) or to your local state fair organization. You also have to spend the time and money to be at their annual conventions where you can make the contacts and get your name out to these decision makers. It may also take several years before the exposure will yield the kind of response you are after. There is always time to venture into the fair market after you have spent the time learning the festival market in your area.

Start with the local festivals in your immediate locale. This is a great way to make good money, good contacts and learn the ropes through trial and error and the mistakes you will make along the way. You need to get your feet wet first by doing these local festivals and learn through the process. As you do more, you will get more comfortable and will get better known to these festival committees. Festival organizations tend to talk to one another. If you do well at one, you can be sure your name and information will get passed along to others in your area.

As always, please feel free to contact me at magic4u02@aol.com. I would love to hear from you. If I can be of any help as you enter the festival market, please just let me know. It would be my pleasure to help.

Message by Anthony Darkstone Brook - Europe/USA

AD: Last year, Shawn Farquhar and I hung out and one evening over dinner at my house we talked about The S.A.M 2000 Convention in New Orleans. I was, together with my pal, Jon Racherbaumer a Close-Up judge. Shawn performed a version of Sealed Surpise there . he took joint first with Joe Cole from Nebraska . fast forward to when he performed it on the Penn & Teller "Fool Us" show in England; he credited you publicly with the invention.

Later that year together with Michael Finney, Jason Andrews and Joe M.Turner he was a guest on my Live TV style Talk Show at the IBM British Ring Convention and we talked about it again on the show.

You kindly gave me a video of yourself performing it . it is an effect that has intrigued me and indeed many Magicians for several years. Care to chat a bit about that effect? Obviously, I am not asking you to reveal the workings but tell us a bit about how that came about and how long ago you came up with the concept.

GS: I came up with 'Sealed Surprise' in 1950 when I worked at Max Holden's Magic shop in N. Y. I fooled Milbourne Christopher with my signed card in a sealed deck. He suggested I put it on the market. It's a great effect and I remember seeing Ricky Jay doing it on the Johnny Carson Show. I sold it to his grandfather Max Katz forty years earlier. It was nice of Shawn to give me a credit line. I do a simpler version. It's funny, at a recent FFFF event a Japanese performer did a version and Shawn reminded me.." Hey, he's doing our trick."

AD: He! He! ..that's Shawn . as I said before you have played many venues in many countries. You have played the Castle, please share with us some of the stories and your memories there ..

GS: I worked the Castle for the first time in the 1970's and then not again until the early 2000's. I try to go back to the Parlor at least once a year. The audiences are great, your ego is fed and 15-20 performances as week really keep your adrenaline level high. My early remembrances were spending time with great people like Dai Vernon, Joe Cossari , Jules Lenier and Kuda Bux. I remember watching Kuda as he was having trouble crossing the street. I kidded him, "Can't you see the light?" He replied, "Not without my blindfold." The Castle week is a vacation for us. We have great accommodations at the Hollywood Hills motel next door, with a terrific view of Hollywood. My Castle fee covers part of the cost and as Jay Marshall used to tell me, "If you want to play the Castle save up for it!

Les Arnold and Dazzle to appear at Magic At The Beach 2013 !!

From the moment they step onstage, you realize something's not right here...

Whether this seasoned magician knows it or not, his flamboyant assistant is stealing the show.

Les Arnold and his daughter, Alex, have show biz running through their veins. They come by it naturally. Les' grandfather, The Great Leon, was a vaudeville headliner, his mother was a dancer in vaudeville and performed in a 1930's bicycle act, and his uncle Leon Leon, was a magician and sound engineer.

Les started performing magic when he was only 10 years old. Alex caught the magic bug at the age of three making her the fourth generation magician. The act (Les Arnold and Dazzle) was created with the idea of strong magic being used, but keeping a comedic flair dating the act in the 1930s.

The act has taken Les Arnold and Alex to Canada, Mexico, Argentina, England, Japan, China, Germany, and Malaysia. They have been seen on the famous French variety show, Le Plus Grand Cabaret Du Monde. They are regular performers at the Magic Castle and have been featured in the world's largest magic publication, MAGIC Magazine. With Les Arnold and Dazzle anything can happen at any time and usually does!

This is Les and Dazzle's premier performance at a magic convention on the East Coast! See Les and Dazzle entertain with their silent comedy acts in the ALL STAR Cabaret Show and the Champions of Magic Show at Magic at the Beach 2013.

Hello All. I have a bit of bad news. Joe Shoes and Gale sent me this info about Ring 81

Al Loeffler, the past President of the ring has passed away. He's been suffering for a long time with cancer that invaded his body practically into every organ. He had had all kinds of treatments and finally decided enough is enough. After waging a long and courageous battle with cancer, Al passed away on Saturday, August 4th. A memorial service was held on Sunday, August 12th - 1:00 pm at Unity Church of Venice, 125 N. Jackson Rd., in Venice (34292).
