Have really enjoyed reading Paul Romhany's book "The Real Deal" a survival guide for magicians. Contains great tips for travelling, helpful promotional ideas, marketing, how to fix day to day problems that arise. Loved reading all the tips and stories from well known magicians - in my opinion definitely worth a read!

Society of American Magicians Hall of Fame and Magic Museum returns

Long out of view, the SAM Hall of Fame's collection of posters, apparatus, illusions, costumes and ephemera will be available to see beginning September 16th, 2012 at the Whittier Historical Society and Museum in Whittier, California. A large portion of the Hall of Fame Museum's collection will be on display with many items of historical interest once featured in the programs of the world's most famous magicians.

The exhibit will occupy virtually the entire second floor of the Whittier Museum for a period of six months to one year. Various magic related events will take place during that period. The Museum has limited capacity but the extended exhibit period will provide time and space for everyone. Whittier is located approximately 18 miles southeast of downtown Los Angeles.

Updated information will be provided on the Hall of Fame Facebook page as well as the Whittier Museum Facebook page here:

5. Remarkable Magic #50 - Nick Lewin

Steve Mitchell - One of magic's hidden gems.

When you read the title of this week's column I'm guessing quite a few of you said, "Steve Mitchell?" Well, that is why I described him as magic's hidden gem! I will also bet that there are very few of you out there are unfamiliar with what Steve does and the spectacular results of his graphic wizardry! For a gem that I dare call hidden Steve's work is on display throughout the magic world. It is awesome!

I became friends with Steve when he was designing and masterminding Ron Wilson's delightful anecdotal history of magic, 'Tales from the Uncanny Scot.' In fact, he persuaded me (it must have taken about a second!) to conduct the interview with Ron Wilson on one of the two DVDs that accompanied the book. Steve became a firm friend during the luncheon that proceeded the taping; and the lunches haven't stopped. For me, Steve's magical Friday luncheons are one of the few events I never miss when I'm in Los Angeles.

Over the years many of magic's finest have enjoyed dining and spending time with Steve. His knowledge of magic and magicians has a quiet authority and insight that comes from an understanding of the very deepest levels of magic. For a quiet and gracefully modest member of our fraternity, there is a slightly 'Chinese Puzzle Box' aspect to Steve as you begin to uncover his strangely integral role in the contemporary magic scene. There is always something new to discover!

Mitchell is an artist and designer who has contributed more to the look and 'feel' of magic that anyone else I can think of in a very long time. His posters, books and portraits combine the look of classic magical works with a contemporary esthetic that adds punch to what could otherwise become nostalgia. With a long and distinguished career as one of America's top designers, it is hardly surprising that Steve brings so much to the table creating art for the magic world. This was the man responsible for packaging 'Pet Rocks' and turning them into best sellers, now he's designing for a community he loves, and the love really shows.

To list all the projects that Steve has added his touch to would take several columns. He has designed books, covers, graphics and props for some of the greatest names in magic. Shoot Ogawa, David Regal, Mark Wilson, Whit Haden, Milt Larsen, 'It's Magic,' Gordon Bean and Rich Bloch is just the tip of an iceberg of talent. He has also taken time out from his graphic work to be a Magic Castle trustee and to head up the Dai Vernon Foundation. He gets up every day at 5:00am and starts working to get it all done, I know because I sometimes phone him before I get to bed!

Walk around the Magic Castle and look at some of his portraits of iconic magicians such as Billy McComb, Jules Lenier, Charlie Miller and Dai Vernon and you quickly realize that Mitchell is as fine an artist with oil and canvas as he is with his trusty iMac. Steve was the designer of the Castle newsletter, back in the days when it was actually printed and mailed to you: That was back when I used to actually read it, instead of just glancing through the new digital version.

Steve Mitchell is also one of the key elements behind 'Pop' Hayden's highly successful 'new fangled' medicine show. Go to 'Pop's site at
http://www.pophaydn.com and feast your eyes on some of the delicious artwork that has done so much to turn Whit's deranged and 'outside of time' brainchild into a red hot commercial reality. While you are on the keyboard clicking, stop by Steve's website at
http://www.stevemitchellgraphicdesign.com/index.html and look at his other designs and projects. They are worth more than a glance!

One of my very favorite outings is visiting Steve's charmingly eccentric home office. It is packed from floor to ceiling and wall to wall with magic books and baseball memorabilia with just enough room for a desk, computer, a phone that rings frequently and a spare chair. Oh, and there is usually just enough room for a couple of glasses of red wine to perch on the edge of the desk!

I'm sure Steve will be slightly embarrassed when he reads this, he is a very modest man, but also a very special part of the fabric from which our magic world is woven. In other words, a gem.

The chair suspension is a wonderful first illusion for any performer to add to their shows. It can add increased value to your show offerings and provide a shining moment to make a birthday party child a star of the day. Many ask what are some things you need to remember when routining for this illusion. Allow me to list a few of them.

Things I try and do in my routine:

- I always perform this at the end of my show when at birthday parties or at least in the middle of the show if at a theater etc. The reason is that this effect and illusion relies a lot on the child not being afraid of you and having trust in you. As your show progresses, you build up trust and the kids learn to relax.

- When the child comes up, I never like to stand and talk downward towards them. I take a step stool (used in the routine) and I sit on and so that the child and I are on the same level. This eases them and makes them relax.

- I talk softer and gentler to them. This makes the audience quiet down to listen but also tends to get the child to know I am there to have fun with them and that they can trust me without begging them to.

- I always start by making the child and the audience laugh together. This is done for a reason ever before I get her on the chairs etc. The reason is to get them to laugh and the audience to laugh so that they know it is going to be fun and that the audience is with them. I do this by telling the child what I wanted to be when I was a kid. But if I tell them who I wanted to be; they must promise not to laugh or giggle no matter what. No laughing or giggling allowed. I also make them and the kids in the audience take an oath by raising their hands and repeating after me. It gets a lot of laughs when I get the kids to promise to do their homework, wash mom and dad's car etc. I finally tell them I wanted to be superman. Of course the kids start laughing and the helper giggles but it really helps to show we are there to have fun and that it is OK for the helper to have fun with me.

- I always tell the child everything I am going to do and ask for permission before I ever do it. This is a key and helps them build trust in you. There are no surprises for them as it is made clear.

- I get the child wanting to help me. This is done because I tell them that although I wanted to be superman but realized that I wasn't going to be flying anytime soon. BUT I grew up to be a magician and although I never learned how to fly I learned how to make people float. That tonight I would like to make the helper float if they could only help me out. You see magic is only PART of making someone float. You have to have magic but you also have to have imagination. That is where my helper comes in. Cause the best imagination is the imagination found in kids.

- I first ask them if they would like to help me have some fun to end the show. They almost always at this time say yes.

- I use a step stool in front of the illusion. This makes it ten times easier for you to get the child to sit right. So I first have them step up on the stool. I then ask them to hold out their arms for me. This is to remind them to use their imagination that they are a plane. I then ask permission if I can help them sit up on the board and I help them up. Everything I do I state before I do it. This is very important.

- I then make sure that their shoulders are as far up on the anchorage chair as I can get them. This is for safety reasons and helps to divide the weight the proper way. Their head I have them lie downwards and have them do 3 things for me for the remainder of the trick. 1) to close their eyes until I tell them to open them 2) to not move from this point forward 3) to have fun and to imagine they are lighter than air As I perform the illusion. My wife is always there by the head side with the helper. She is there to make sure and comfort the child if in any way she senses anything from the child. In most cases, this is never an issue.

A safety note that I tell everyone doing the chairs is the following: Always hold on to the non-anchored chair and the board resting on it whenever you are lifting the child on or off the illusion. It is not so much the weight that causes the problem, but if the board twists off the back chair as your helper is getting up, it will twist enough that it can actually break the weld right off. I always hold the chair and board at that spot or have my assistant hold it as I lift the girl off the chair.

If you follow some of these simple rules, you can have a wonderful experience with a classic illusion of magic. If you would like more information on the chair suspension illusion, please visit my website at http://www.kpmagicproducts.com or send me an email at magic4u02@aol.com.
Thanks.

7. In Conversation with Pat Fallon - #1

Message by Anthony Darkstone Brook - Europe/USA

Anthony Darkstone In Conversation With Pat Fallon
John Pye, who is currently the 2012 - 2013 President of The International Brotherhood of Magicians booked me to Produce & Host The Anthony Darkstone In Conversation Talk Show, be part of the Judges Panel for the Stage Contest and EmCee The International Close-Up Show at The British Ring 25 Annual Convention in 2011.

It was good seeing old friends and making new ones. One such new friend was one the leading names of Magic in Ireland - Pat Fallon. I had heard of Pat on the International scene via mutual friends and it was a great pleasure to get to know and to spend quality time with him.

In an age where scruffiness is accepted as the norm, it is always good to see someone who understands sartorial elegance both on and off stage. The opening show at The Convention featured Pat Fallon who did an outstanding job as EmCee. Always a joy to watch a true professional at work.

Amongst his accolades, in 2009, Pat Fallon was a Merlin Award winner from the IMS and is Ireland's only Gold Star Member of the Inner Magic Circle.

Pat and I met the evening before the official opening and over drinks we got chatting about mutual friends (Pat picked up the tab as I had no British Pounds with me) Note to self - I need to reciprocate!!!!

Later that evening we were joined at dinner with Michael and Lori Finney and Neil Roberts. Delightful conversation and laughter brought that day to a
wonderful end. Since then Pat and I kept in touch and recently the opportunity presented itself to get together for some more drinks and conversation ..

www.patfallon.com

AD: Hello Pat, delighted to welcome you to My In Conversation series .

PF: Thank you Tony, a pleasure to converse with you.

AD: Likewise; let me begin by saying that you had not always considered being an Entertainer and in fact, by comparison, you came into Magical entertainment only in your late 20's/ early 30's.

PF: Yes Tony, that's right, I had a life long before I became interested in magic which was actually just before my thirtieth birthday. I was born in Dublin, Ireland and my family and I lived in the very affluent Belgrave Square in Monkstown, County Dublin. However, I must quickly add that it was the basement flat of an eminent Doctor.

AD: A small but vital detail ..I know what you mean as I have a friend who lives in a Palace but he works there too as part of the Stable Management. you yourself know a few things about stables and horses.

12. Innovention 2012
--------------------------------------------
Message by Paul Stone (US)

We've added another Star Presenter to the line-up of talent at the Innovention Convention, taking place in less than a month from September 30 - October 3 at the Gold Coast Hotel & Casino here in Las Vegas!

Diana Zimmerman rarely, if ever, speaks at a Magic Convention, but she is one of the most successful Corporate Event Producers in USA, with a hugely impressive background in Magic.

Her talk is titled 'Ten Stupid Mistakes Magicians Make', and The first mistake you'll make is not hearing Diana Zimmerman speak at Innovention 2012, September 30 - October 3rd. The other nine she will explain.

Why do a few magicians become stars, while most don't - even though they may be equally as talented? Hint: It's not the tricks. It is about creating a strong identity - a.k.a. a captivating personal brand.

You'll leave her highly interactive presentation with your own dynamic brand guide. You'll also learn what does and does not work; why most branding fails; how to market yourself with your new powerful identity; and how to instantly go from invisible to invincible. It's all based on her newest business book: "Why Most Branding Fails to Captivate: What Stanislavski Knew."

This may well be the ONLY time you get to hear Diana speak - unless of course you're lucky enough to attend a business conference for Toshiba, HP, Siemens, or any one of the other Fortune 1000.

Diana joins an outstanding list of performers and lecturers including The Great Tomsoni & Co, Jeff Hobson, Armando Lucero, Paul Vigil, Michael Goudeau, Sos & Victoria, Amazing Johnathon, Michael Holly, Fielding West, Bob Kohler, Kyle & Mistie Knight, Seth Kramer, Ben Stone, Farrell Dillon, Scott Alexander, Mike Douglas, Sos Jnr, Bill Smith, Christopher Hart, Gabrielle Lyster and Adam Flowers.
