New York's First Dedicated Houdini Museum In The House Of Magic

The museum is in the same home as Fantasma Magic, New York's lead distributor of magic.

The Houdini Museum of New York at Fantasma opened its doors right before Halloween and I thought it may make for an interesting package or live studio interview. The midtown museum is full of millions of dollars worth of Houdini memorabilia that we can bring into the studio to fully display the wonder of the history of Houdini.

Here's some more info! Watch a video about the museum here:

About The Houdini Museum Of New York : The museum tells the amazing story of an impoverished son of immigrants, who harnessed the power of the mass media, and the emerging technologies of film and photography, to become one of 20th century's most famous performers. Full refunds will be offered to anyone who was unable to see TV magician Dynamo perform, the organisers of an event in Jersey have said.

More than 300 people paid £150 each for the event at the Royal Yacht Hotel. At least 30 islanders have complained that crowds around the magician blocked him from their view.

5. Remarkable Magic #57 - Nick Lewin

Message by Nick Lewin (US)

Doing Corporate---Part One.

For over a decade, almost my entire income as a magician came from performing at corporate events. I look back on these as a very special time; the work was good and the money great. Sadly, the golden era rather wound down. I have recently noticed that there is a very welcome 'spike' in this kind of work at the moment and I want to share some thoughts on the topic. I am going to start with a warning and then cover some key points in a fairly random manner.

Any corporate date is booked on the strength of your promotional video; after the show you may well receive more bookings based on the strength of your performance and how well it was received. However, your potential future employer, if he is from another company, is going to need that strong video to show to his colleagues, in order to lock in the booking. I recently wrote at some length in Magic New Zealand about promotional videos so I'm not going to repeat it here! If you missed the columns, use Alan's nifty new App to visit his back issues!

The most important thing to remember in a corporate event is that if you really mess up, it could lose the executive who booked you his job. Read that again! It might just turn out to be a disastrous show for you, but it might mean, the guy responsible for you getting your check, is out looking for another job, or out of line for his next promotion.

The above paragraph is the reason that you need to follow a very careful 'Golden Rule,'---if in doubt, leave it out! Anything that could be offensive should be removed from the show, this particularly applies to jokes/tricks that can in any way be viewed as sexist, racist or involve bad taste/language. Maybe only one person will be offended but that can be enough. It is a sub-division of 'Murphy's Law' that the one person you offend will be the most important person present, either that or they will email that person the day after the show.

Another pitfall to avoid is any trick that involves using a spectator from the group in a routine that can embarrass him/her in front of their co-workers. Also avoid using any of those 'cutesy' put-down lines that you find in magic books on comedy---they are all years out of date and corny anyhow. If you use a volunteer from the audience, make him look good. If you want to have a butt for your comedy---make it yourself. I'm not saying this to promote good manners, I'm saying it because it is good business, and business is the engine that drives corporate bookings.

Often the executive hiring you will give you advice that indicates you should 'let it rip' or even give you a list of people to 'pick on.' He may be very misguided in this. Do not take directions from amateurs; he certainly wouldn't follow your advice about how to conduct his business affairs. I have also discovered that the people they suggest you involve in the show are often the very worst ones to actually include!

They do love to tell you whom to 'work with' though, so I have several effects that involve spectators in a rather non-invasive manner and it usually keeps your corporate contact happy if you include them in this way. This is one area that I use my 'Linking Finger Ring Routine' to good effect, as it includes them but keeps their participation to a minimum. On the other hand, if you perform a 'Burned and Restored Bill' then you are missing a good bet if you don't borrow it from a financial officer in the company. That would never occur to the executive who hired you when giving you
'notes.'

One thing that makes it easier to book a corporate event is the ability to customize your show around the client's product, especially if you can add a good-natured dig at the company's chief rival. I often use a variation on the late, great Alan Shaxon's 'Confabulation,' and have found it to be very effective indeed in this capacity. I describe my handling in some detail in my lecture and include a full synopsis of the routine in my 'Yellow Lecture Notes.' This effect comprises a perfect framework to give the impression of a great deal of customizing without actually needing to change much at all.

Usually the client will suggest you produce the CEO, in a puff of smoke, during you show---or turn him into a tiger! Neither idea is very practical in a normal banquet room or meeting situation and it is nice to have a good pitch for a routine that includes their product and sales team. It is especially nice when it doesn't involve much more than putting a wallet, pen and stack of index cards in your pocket.

You can order copies of my "Cruise Magic 101,' 'Ultimate Linking Finger Ring Routine' books and my 'Yellow Notes' from my website, at www.nicklewin.com

It is absolutely amazing if one takes the time to stop and look at where marketing is trending. Customer Relationship Marketing (CRM) is growing leaps and bounds in very cool ways. Suddenly you do not just have print and direct mail any longer. Those will always be there and they are not going away. But those are passive formats of marketing. For the first time ever YOU have a means in which to actively engage the consumer or potential consumer.

For the first time you can interact in real time with consumers and can also give them what they seek, need or want, through what we refer to as variable driven marketing approaches. What I mean by that is like having an email that is populated for each of your consumers based on their wants, likes and past buying habits. The email you receive is different than the email someone else reviews. It is quite amazing. Suddenly you are engaging the consumer in ways you never could before.

Variable driven CRM approaches are very powerful these days and is something any successful business should look into, study and start applying to their own business models. Variable concepts is the ability to adjust and customize exactly what the prospect or consumers sees based upon a set means of criteria. In this way, you customize the interaction and experience with the consumer.

In the area of social media, this is huge. People do not realize just how powerful a marketing tool social media can and already has become. Places like Facebook and Twitter are the areas where companies can engage their consumers in REAL time. They can interact with them live better than ever before. Companies are starting to realize that this is a powerful way to extend their brand and to really interact with their consumers and to understand their buying habits and more.

Mobile Marketing is even MORE incredible. This is the new kid on the block and is going to grow to new levels. Almost everyone has a cell phone and uses it daily. Companies are starting to realize that this is like having instant access to a consumer if you can learn to engage them in some powerful way. Companies like Disney and MGM and others are getting this and leading the way in using mobile technology.

The ability to make mobile apps or to make your website adapted to the mobile environment is becoming cheaper and cheaper each month. This is certainly something any small business can do with a little proper research.

If you want to really grow your magic business, start to look more at CRM style marketing. Start to study email, social media and mobile marketing practices. There is SO much that can be done to positively impact your magic business in new ways. One thing you can do is to "like" large companies Facebook pages. Look at what they do and how they are doing it. Study their approaches cause they get it and it works.

In regards to emails, give them what they seek and what they need. Understand that folks buy something based on a need they have. If they have a problem they need a solution for, YOU can be that solution for them. your email can start to do that.

As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your thoughts. So if you have any thoughts on my articles or suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly at magic4u02@aol.com. I would love to hear from you.

Message by Anthony Darkstone Brook - Europe/USA

AD: Magic undoubtedly is about Entertainment and in common with many Pro names we think like Entertainers and not jerks that do tricks.

PF: That's absolutely right Tony. It is not in the trick but the performance. And because of that, I think one of the great advantages of being an Entertainer is you get to places and meet people that you would otherwise never get to do. I have been fortunate to entertain Royalty, Presidents, Government Ministers, Sports personalities and Celebrities of every description in places I never dreamt I would visit.

AD: I totally get that. Any one incident that caused some other worldly amusement?

PF: So many but the one that I must talk about is on one lovely occasion at a charity function where the newly crowned Miss World, Rosanna Davidson, the daughter of singer songwriter Chris DeBurg was in attendance. It was a rather formal affair and one of the organizers insisted on introducing me at her table.

As he opened his mouth to make the introduction Miss World said "No need for an introduction, I know this gentleman because he entertained at my eight birthday party" After my close-up set she stood up gave me a very nice hug and a kiss, much to the envy of every young man at the event. It was to be the first of many such kisses as we met regularly at functions that year and we still bump into each other now and again.

AD: Now you know why I hung out with you at the IBM Convention in England last year, you are such a chick magnet . He! He!

PF: Well. that and you had no English Pounds and I handled the bar bill!!!

AD: You did indeed and I've made a note to repay you with 70 nubile virgins when you die or a dozen Vegas show-girls right now ... now drink up and wax lyrical as only an Irishman of your caliber can do about Highs, Lows and Learning Curves

PF: Well, you asked for it, so here goes ..The first magic lecture I attended was by Mark Leveridge at my first magic convention in Malahide County Dublin in 1985. It was great as it was the first time I saw someone demonstrate and talk about professional magic. I still do some of the stuff from that lecture.

I met Neville Wiltshire at that convention which was also my first experience of the comradeship that exists in the magic community. He was so helpful to me in finding the direction I needed to go and not the direction I wanted to go. He guided towards books written by Roy Johnson and Alan Shaxon which were full of cabaret style and close-up magic. He also introduced me to the work of Ken Brooke and of magic magazines and also the importance or reading magical history and keeping up to date.

Like a lot of other magicians I wanted to be an illusionist and foolishly thought that it was easy as you just had to have lots of big boxes and a few dancing girls. Neville quickly pointed out that even if I acquired the necessary equipment and experience needed where would I find a place in Ireland to perform such a show. Neville is still a great person for keeping me grounded and even to this day whenever I need to know anything I ring Neville or Quentin Reynolds as they are both so knowledgeable and helpful in all things magical.
