Wayne Houchin Severely Burned In The Dominican Republic

Monday while appearing on a national TV show in the Dominican Republic, Wayne Houchin was severely burned. In an act of random violence, the TV host took a handful of Aqua De Florida, ignited it and intentionally dropped it on Wayne Houchin's head and face, setting him on fire.

Wayne was not aware he was going to do this. This was not a stunt or part of an act - this was a criminal attack.

The fast actions of the rest of the Curiosidades team saved Wayne's life. He was rushed to the emergency room and has severe burns on his head, face, neck and right hand. Wayne is in extreme pain, but he is recovering and in good hands. ...

UPDATE!!! Why Wayne Was Attacked!!

For those of us who don't read Spanish, here is the posting run through a translation tool:
-
"Friends:
Since you will have noticed, from Monday, the 26th of November, our messages diminished notably and the fact is that unfortunately our team was attacked criminalmente in the person of Wayne Houchin.

At 12:35 p.m. when Good Bolivar, Wayne and Fran Houchin were finishing his participation in the program ' Approach the Stars ' of missis Adriana Azzi, who in this occasion was being presented by mister Franklin Barazarte, also the director of the above mentioned program, who without notice previous and without any type of safety measurements, offered them ' to give them ' a blessing and taking Water of Florida (that is extremely inflammable for his high alcoholic content) proceeded to set fire to Wayne Houchin, resulting in serious burns in his face, head neck and right hand.

We want to make clear, that the above mentioned event was not a part of our presentation and that we do not receive any notice previous either, it was undoubtedly a CRIMINAL ATTACK and unfortunately the place was not counting with extinguidores of fire or I equip of the first help. Only the rapid and efficient intervention of the rest of our team saved the life of Wayne..."

4. The David Berglas International Magic Award
--------------------------------------------
Message by Tobias Beckwith (US)

Las Vegas, NV November 27, 2012 - Local magic star Jeff McBride has just returned from his featured appearance at The International Magic Convention in London with the news that he has become the recipient of The David Berglas International Magic Award. One of the top honors in magic, the award was previously given only to David Copperfield, Uri Geller, Derren Brown, Juan Tamariz and The MacMillan family, one of Britain's legendary magic families.

David Berglas has long been one of the most important figures in British magic. In 1999, he established a non-profit organization called The Foundation for Promoting the Art of Magic (FP-AM). The foundation presents The David Berglas International Magic Award annually at the prestigious International Magic Convention in London. It was first awarded to the organizers of the convention, The MacMillan family, then in 2008 to Uri Gellar, in 2009 to David Copperfield, in 2010 to Juan Tamariz and in 2011 to Derren Brown. Jeff McBride, in 2012, is the fifth recipient.

McBride continues to appear as The Shaman in the international tour of The Illusionists. Magic audiences around the world know McBride for his appearances on all of the major television networks, most recently on Masters of Illusion and The World Magic Awards. He is the only magician to have had a role created for his special talents on a Star Trek series, appearing as Joran Belar on Star Trek - Deep Space Nine. In Las Vegas, McBride has been a favorite in showrooms for over 20 years. He got his start as an opening act with Diana Ross at Caesars Palace, then headlined in the Bal du Moulin Rouge at the LV Hilton, continued on for multiple dates at Caesars Palace (including several years headlining at Caesars Magical Empire), and then mounted his own full evening show, McBride - Magic at the Edge, which ran to rave reviews at Palace Station. Most recently, he is the
creator and host for Jeff McBride's Wonderground, a unique new form of magical nightclub, occurring every third Thursday at The Olive, on Sunset.

In addition to his work as a performer, McBride is among the world's great teachers of magic. His "McBride Magic & Mystery School," based in Las Vegas, has been called "the world's foremost school of magic," by the BB

C. He is in demand as performer, lecturer, teacher and director throughout the world.

Have you ever had a situation where you are at a birthday party gig and you have the kids all seated and engaged in the show. It is going great and all of a sudden the doorbell rings and in comes Aunt Betsy.

Aunt Betsy is excited and so immediately runs into the room and proceeds to give the birthday child a gift oblivious to the fact that you are already into your show. She forces the child to open the gift right then and there.

You are left in a very awkward situation. Now this may seem like a very crazy and extreme situation, but it does happen and it happens in various degrees. You are in a house that they are accustomed to being at. They tend to feel that this is their environment and that you are just a part of the overall fun happening. They tend to not see an issue with interrupting the flow of the show.

So how do you handle this? How do you go about trying to gain control back and getting back into the show when a situation like this unfolds?

The kids all lose focus, they get involved in the present and you are left with a situation of standing there lost and trying to regain control. Part of you wants to latch out at the rude individual but as a professional, you should know that is certainly not an avenue you want to go down. Certainly you do not want to go there with children present.

So my options are to get rude and make a statement to the person or choose to somehow maintain control of the situation and maintain the focus back on me.

I tend to allow the situation to happen because to try and stop it cold turkey just leaves a bad taste in everyone's mouth. It also is hard to get them to stop in the first place and you tend to not be able to do it without being rude and harsh.

Instead I choose to be the center of attention. By that I mean that I allow myself to become a part of it. To just stand there and watch it happen and say nothing, gets folks to not pay any attention to you at all. However, if you start to become a part of the situation as it unfolds the focus is left on you and you still look like the good guy.

So what I tend to do is to talk up and act as an MC of sorts. I am the one conducting the situation. As I start to talk, people listen and I am in control of what happens. It many ways I can direct it and steer it in any direction I want it to go in. I can be funny, deliver comedy lines and be excited about it as well. If handled right, I can get everyone seeing me as a good guy, I gain control and I have it over a lot faster.

I might state that I am excited that she finally showed up. I might say that we were waiting for her since we are having SOOO much fun during the show and are sure that she will as well. I might joke that the gift was for me and thank her a lot for such a wonderful gift for the magician. By doing so it becomes a part of the show itself. I can get laughs but I am also subtlety letting her know the show is taking place. I am doing so in a kind manner though.

I may go on to compliment such a nice gift and the paper is so nice. I might suggest the child thanking the aunt and to pass the card and gift to mom and dad so they can make sure it doesn't get broken. I them can segue back into the show at a faster pace.

So as you can see this is never an ideal situation, but it is one in which you can choose to remain in control. I feel and act as if it was just another routine in my show. By me speaking up and handling it as I do, it often goes over just fine, the person gets the message clearly and I keep the distraction to a minimum.

The worse you can do is just stand there and allow it to happen without saying anything. Then you become invisible and often times it is impossible to get back into the performance. Your momentum is killed and the flow of the show is shot.

I am never there at a gig to be the bad guy. My goal is not to upset people but to be a solutions provider any chance I can get. This does not mean I allow people to ruin a show or to act rude. However, handling it by remaining calm and a part of the situation helps everyone to feel better about it.

I really think that by doing it this way so often, it becomes second nature. Many times people totally are oblivious to what is going on. It sounds stupid but many folks need a friendly reminder that "um the show is going on and you are taking away from it." Of course I would never say that. However, I handle it in such a way that they start to get the message clearly. They start to realize that I am remaining in control and I am the ring master that controls what happens.

So if you are faced with a situation like this, do not skip a beat. Instead be the one that takes control of what is going on. Be the one who MC's the situation and by doing so you will find the incident ends up in a much better way and you are back into your show in no time.

As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your thoughts. So if you have any thoughts on my articles or suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly at magic4u02@aol.com. I would love to hear from you.

6. In Conversation with Pat Fallon - #11
--------------------------------------------
Message by Anthony Darkstone Brook - Europe/USA

www.patfallonmagic.com

AD: Quite something . and soon a snowball effect happened.

PF: Wow! did it ever? The snowball effect began to take over when I was booked for a Magic society show where Aonghus McAnally saw me work and asked me to join him a regular Friday night summer show. Aonghus is a very versatile entertainer as he sings, plays guitar besides being a top class comedian and after dinner speaker. In addition to all that he is a very successful television and radio presenter and producer. He has been an MC on a couple of the British Ring Gala shows in recent years, which is something else he excels at as he never gets a name wrong. You really want to hate people like that who have so much talent, but you can't as he is such a nice guy.

AD: Talent is talent .a true gift which Aonghus uses well.. You introduced me to him when we were all on the IBM Ring 25 Convention in 2011. I enjoyed the brief chat I had with in England. Nice guy. So continue with your story ..

PF: The following year I was added to the gala show of the IBM convention where I worked with Paul Daniels for the first time. Paul and Debbie watched the entire show and spoke to me afterwards about the act and were very complimentary about my image and style. Their comments did wonders for my self esteem and confidence which were very low at the time.

AD: Yes indeed, Paul has done much to elevate the Art. Met him a few times and he is very good friends with Alan Watson. Paul & Debbie always stay with Alan whenever they visit New Zealand. I am very honored to state that I knew his first Producer Brian Penders at the BBC and as a result, attended Paul's first taped TV show in the Shepherd's Bush Studios in London.

PF: Yes Tony, absolutely agree, Paul is a living legend in the business and he was as I stated previously, a great morale booster to me personally. Anyway, although my career was progressing slowly I was barely able to make enough money to live on. The five year plan was just not working so I needed to talk to Paul Welch about it.

Paul was normally a very mild mannered person, but that suddenly changed when I informed him that in my opinion the five year plan was just not working. How far along are we with the five year plan he inquired. Three years I replied. If it was a three year plan I would have called it a F***ing three year plan, now it's a F***ing five year plan so it will take five years.

After the outburst Paul gave me an important lesson on planning. Always look back to see how far you have come, not just forward to see how far you have to go and a five year plan takes five years.

14. Illusion Builder Stands Behind Las Vegas' Top Magic Acts

Article forwarded on by Bill Smith (US)

Illusion builder stands behind Las Vegas' top magic acts

Bill Smith works in a building surrounded by secrets only he can understand. They're on his cluttered desk, pieces of graph paper with schematics of boxes and torturous-looking contraptions bursting out of a rack of manila folders. Some are recorded on VHS tapes stacked 10-high on his television to be copied to DVD, for his eyes and his customers' eyes only.

There are secrets in the warehouse connected to his office, too, concealed inside trunks, and parts being assembled by his four-man crew.

"Most of the time, my workers don't even know what they're building," Smith said. Through his company, Bill Smith's Magic Ventures, he builds boxes that can
compress a person to just 18 inches tall and giant spinning fans that allow magicians to walk through unharmed. Since he moved to Las Vegas, Smith has built props for magicians from David Copperfield and Penn and Teller to Lance Burton and John "The Great Tomsoni" Thompson.
