6. Remarkable Magic #308 - Nick Lewin
--------------------------------------------
Message by Nick Lewin (US)

A Goodbye and a Bravo.

I want to start this column with a goodbye to one of the nicest people that ever graced the magic world - Amos Levkovitch. I have never seen a greater impact from the passing of a beloved figure in the magic community. From the outpouring of spoken and written tributes to Amos, it is apparent that everyone agrees that this was really one of magic's true gentlemen.

I first became friends with Amos in 1984 when I was the technical advisor for Steven Spielberg's TV series Amazing Stories. An opening shot was created that featured my character producing a dove onstage. It was a really complex shot that began as a close-up and panned back to encompass a fabulous studio replication of the Magic Castle.

The only problem was that I had never produced a dove before, and never wanted to, I still have nightmares about the feel of their nasty scabby claws on my finger. Amos came to my rescue and taught me what to do and gave me the dove to do it with. In Hollywood tradition he became a technical advisor to the technical advisor and even ended up with an onset job as a dove wrangler! We have been friends ever since and like so many others I will miss him greatly. He was a wonderful performer and an even more wonderful person. Farewell my friend.

Last Saturday I caught a great variety magic show here in Las Vegas at Planet Hollywood. The event was TV Magic Week in The David Saxe Theatre, and it ran from June 25th-30th with daily shows at 4pm. The show was a sixty-five minute high-energy romp of magic, illusion, masks, animals, fun and even some great sleight of hand close-up thrown in. The time sped by and the pace of the show never dragged, this was an excellent decision and allowed the capacity audience to enter very enthusiastically into the energy of everything.

Talking about energy, veteran Las Vegas entertainer Russ Merlin did a magnificent job hosting the show. He didn?t waste a word or a moment in his role as MC, and then closed out the show with his one of a kind act. Russ act features four onstage assistants, four very bizarre masks and a lot of theatrical stage whispering. It is hard to describe the act, but even harder not to laugh at it. While you couldn't call it a magic show, that maybe its closest relative! Great job Russ.

Other acts on the bill included the exotic bird trainer Clint Carvalho, fresh from a recent appearance on Americas Got Talent, whose good-natured show had the audience in the palm of his hand. Maybe what I mean is in the claw of his parrots foot! The precision of their various stunts was both impressive and humorous. I am a sucker for a good animal act and this one is as honed as any you are ever likely to see.

One nice touch in the show was the inclusion of a big screen close-up sequence from Armando Vera. He did some very impressive card and coin work that added a real dimension to the performance. It was very clean and commercial work that made a big impact on the audience. Armando showed a great deal of savvy in his choice of material and a lot of discipline in his construction of this segment.

Leslie McKinney and Lorie, performed some highly effective grand illusion in their segment of the show. The couple were smooth and original in both their performance and presentation. As a magician I appreciated the design of McKinneys various props, they all had something unique about them and looked and functioned just a little differently from what one might expect. A really sweet interlude in his show was when Les performed a Misers Dream onstage with two young ladies from the audience it was a show stealer. Leslie and Lorie performed a
very accomplished set and were another fine addition to a highly professional show.

So in its usual manner, life goes on in the magic world. We say goodbye to a beloved member of our community and watch another show created and filling a showroom. TV Magic Week was the kind of bill that Amos would have fitted into perfectly and his iconic dove work would have been a huge plus point to the production. However, as I said, Life goes on

7. Edinburgh International Magic Festival - David Berglas
--------------------------------------------
Article forwarded on by Mel Kientz (US)

Edinburgh International Magic Festival:
David Berglas on the stunts that inspired a generation of illusionists Berglas is the star attraction in the capital this week and, at 86, remains the inspiration for the new generation of illusionists.

by Rick Fulton

Magician David Berglas
The man has his arms outstretched. Two nurses hold his wrists with one of their hands while the other marks the beat of his pulse swishing down in the air, echoed by the tap of a drum.

The movement of the beat they are marking begins to slow. Slower still until it stops. Both nurses cling to the mans wrists, disbelief on their faces. The man, still talking, has slowed his pulse in both wrists to a stop. He is a dead man ... talking.

And that is the magic of David Berglas, who they called The International Man of Mystery way before Mike Myers took it for Austin Powers. David, 86, has led the way for modern, television and Las Vegas magicians. As well as creating magic that has still to be mastered, he wrapped it in entertainment - adding tension and showmanship to the television age.

Dynamo called him a living legend, while Derren Brown said he is one of our greatest living magical performers. Derren has slowed down the pulse in one of his wrists - but not both. No one else has been able to stop the pulse in both.

David will be the star attraction of tomorrows events at this years Edinburgh International Magic Festival, which starts today and carries on until July 5.

Of his standing with the worlds greatest magicians, David said: I am always very honoured when they ask me for their advice.

Most of the top names have taken things from my books, which they say have inspired them. There is much to be inspired by. David is the only person to have gone down the notorious Cresta Run in St Moritz blindfolded. And in 1987, a reporter suggested that David perform a trick in the new Magic Circle HQ.

He went into the street and astounded the reporter with an impromptu levitation.

He is also one of only a very few magicians to have a trick named after him. The Berglas Effect is the Holy Grail of card tricks. It is incredible to watch and seemingly impossible to do.

No wonder that magic stars are queuing up to tap his mind. David said: Derren has done six touring shows and all of them had scenes based on my routines.

He managed to stop one of his pulses. But I can change the tempo of both my pulses. No one has ever been able to copy that. Dynamo is very quiet, unassuming. He is doing terrific stunts and is completely different.

David also knows perhaps the worlds most high-profile illusionist David Blaine - who has used magic tricks Berglas was doing many years ago, like smoking a cigarette under water. It seems that despite what Simon Cowell says on Britains Got Talent, magic is on the up.

Harry Potter has given new generations more of an interest and the new film, Now You See Me starring Woody Harrelson, has given it a Hollywood polish.

David said: I understand why Simon grumbles when there is a magic trick. He has not seen many good ones. Magic is only as good as the performance. But was David born with magic?

He laughed: That is like asking a good musician whether you are born like that.
You have an inner talent. You have to have a deep interest, lots of dedication and if it absorbs you, you can become a good magician. You aren't born a magician.

David's own life is adventurous and inspiring.

He fled Nazi Germany when he was 11 and after being turned down by the RAF because he was underage, he joined the US army until 1947, working in intelligence. After being demobbed, he joined his familys textile business and went to Bradford Technical College to study the business. But a chance meeting with magic dealer Ken Brooke gave him an interest.

It was a hobby for five years as David worked in psychotherapy, studying medical hypnosis. By 1952, he was a professional magician and in 1953 performed in Scotland for the first time. Tomorrow he will talk to MagicFest artistic director Kevin McMahon about his extraordinary career.

This will be a question and answer event held at the Festival Theatre, which is on the site of the Empire, where David made his Scottish debut in 1953. He said: Edinburgh was very refined and I never heard of any complaints. Every town had its own reputation.

The worst was Glasgow. Most acts dreaded working there. It was known as the comics graveyard as they had such a rough time. He began working in radio, which then led to television. He was one of the first magicians to appear on British TV with Meet David Berglas in 1954. He then moved to Las Vegas and inspired a generation of magicians with his Channel 4 series The Mind of David Berglas in the 80s.

Soon he was called on to help with so-called special effects in Hollywood. Special effects departments were good at exploding things but when it came to making a glass of wine float without any means of support, they called on David. He worked with Orson Welles on Casino Royale in 1967, which led to him working on five other Bonds. David also helped Jack Nicholson handle cards as the Joker in the 1989 film Batman.

David retired 20 years ago but his magic continues to inspire. He said: Younger magicians copy those on the telly rather than going to the theatre and watching.

In my day, very few people knew where to find magic. There weren't many books but now there are loads of books or films. So theres nothing original coming through. The ones who are successful are the ones who present it well.

Learning a trick doesn't make you a magician. You have to charm, puzzle and entertain. And David has done all that. In spades, hearts, diamonds and clubs.

11. Tales of the Red Tape #40: The USDA Rabbit Police
--------------------------------------------
Article forwarded on by Peter Philips (US)

The Foundry

Theres no good way to deliver this disturbing bit of news except to come right out with it: Marty the Magician and others in the business of pulling a rabbit from a hat are under strict orders from the federal government to develop a contingency plan for handling their critters in the event of a natural or man-made disaster.

And, no, a recipe for Hasenpfeffer wont suffice.

Said plan will be evaluated once a year, when enforcers from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) make their annual unannounced bunny home inspections. Oh, and all magicians are required to carry a copy of the contingency plan at all times and make it available for inspection while in travel status. After all, animal owners might want to consult the rabbit-rescue protocol amid the chaos of saving their families from a deadly hurricane or tornado.

With the July 29 compliance deadline looming, the USDA recently sent Marty the Magician (aka Marty Hahne of Springfield, Missouri) an eight-page communiqué detailing requirements for the plan, which must:

Identify common emergencies most likely to occur,

Outline specific tasks required to be carried out in response to each of the identified emergencies,

Identify a chain of command and who (by name or by position title) will be responsible for fulfilling these tasks, and

Address how response and recovery will be handled in terms of materials, resources, and training needs.

All of which means that Marty must prepare for all the calamities that could possibly befall Casey the Rabbit while making the rounds of more than 150 performance venues he visits each year, including schools, libraries, churches, and homes.

The goal of the rule, according to the USDA, is to increase the regulated community's awareness and understanding about their responsibilities to protect their animals in emergency situations. (That might seem reasonable enough only if one assumes that animal owners have absolutely no desire to protect their furry friends or their investments.) But the agency also acknowledges that many animal
handlers developed and implemented contingency plans in the wake of Hurricane Katrina some seven years before the government issued its mandate. Alas, this isnt Martys first encounter with the bunny patrol. By law, magicians must be licensed by the federal government to use rabbits in their acts, as specified in Title 9, Chapter I, Subchapter A, Parts 1-4 of the Animal Welfare Act.

Martys first home inspection didnt go so well. He was written up because Caseys travel cage lacked stickers indicating live animal and the arrows pointing upward (in the event hes tempted to carry the cage upside down). When questioning the enforcement action, Marty was warned that verbal abuse of an inspector carries a fine of $1,000 per incident.

One might be forgiven for thinking (hoping!) this hare-brained regulation is an anomaly. It isnt. In reality, the bunny rule epitomizes the incessant expansion of government interference in our lives. In the Obama Administrations first term alone, the cost of major regulations increased by $70 billion annually and thats just for 131 of the thousands of rules actually issued. If only they could disappear with the wave of a magic wand.
