2. News From Luís de Matos - Portugal

Message by Luís de Matos (Portugal)

I spent last weekend in London where I was presented with The Devant Award. It was a huge honour and a privilege.

The following day, Sunday, October 20, I travelled to Clacton-so-Sea, a two-hour journey from London. The reason? To see a completely new live show by Paul Daniels.

I have no words to describe how wonderful it was. It's an amazing show that no one who loves magic should miss. And when I say 'new' I mean it. You will not see the card in wallet or electric chairs. Paul has put together a touring show without the routines for which he is famous. It is a lesson in showmanship and a total inspiration.

Many years ago I saved some money to fly to London and go see him at the Prince of Walles theatre in the West End. Even today I remember every moment of it. I feel I've just had a similar experience, watching a show that will be unforgettable.

Paul is at his best. Better than ever.

The always 'lovely Debbie McGee' is there too and her own performances and the interaction between the duo are tremendous.

The audience loved Paul and Debbie and I came home with a huge and happy smile on my face. I saw the master at work. Everyone should take the opportunity of doing the same.

All the best,
Luis

Legendary Magician Paul Potassy gets lifetime achievement award for his 90th birthday

The Corodini Hungarian Magic Association awarded Paul Potassy with the Corodini Memorial Ring (this is their lifetime achievement award) at the National Magic Convention last weekend.

Paul Potassy has appeared at more than 150 TV shows internationally during his amazing career. He has worked in 46 countries and did more than 12 000 shows. He has performed for celebrities, legendary politicians, royalty and even for the pope! He was previously awarded with lifetime achievement awards by the German and Spanish Magicians Association, he is Member of the Inner Magic Circle with a degree of a gold star and in 2007 he was awarded with Masters' Fellowship by the Magic Castle. He celebrates his 90th birthday at 23rd of October at his home in Manila, Philippines with his wife.

Unfortunately because of his age, Mr Potassy couldn't receive the award personally in Budapest, so he greeted the Memorial Ring via internet and the Corodini Hungarian Magic Association sent him his award by post.

7. Remarkable Magic #324 - Nick Lewin
--------------------------------------------
Message by Nick Lewin (US)

Jay Alexander: the art of a modern magician.

I recently got to spend a little time with Jay Alexander, one of the most successful magicians currently working in the corporate market. I recorded a 90-minute interview with Jay in which he gave some amazing insights into the thinking that has made him such a successful and busy magician. This column is just a teaser for the full-length article I am writing about this very remarkable performer. However I first want to tell you a little about the man himself.

Alexander was born in Houston, Texas and at 11 started his love affair with magic in the traditional manner, after receiving a magic set as a gift. His mother owned a shoe store in which she worked and Jay spent a lot of time there practicing and performing his magic for the customers. It was here that Jay started to acquire his '10,000 hours of practice….' At this time Jay was influenced and inspired by magicians he saw on TV such as Harry Anderson and the late, great Doug Henning.

At 13 someone asked him if he performed kid's shows and he instantly, and untruthfully, responded, "Yes!" After the show he took his five-dollar fee and went to 'Archie's Magic Store' in Houston to buy a trick. Wayne Raeke who worked at the store, and was to become Jay's first mentor, persuaded him not to spend his money on one bad trick but to buy a book and learn several good tricks. It was great advice that is as sound today as it was then

After Jay's second paid show he returned to 'Archie's' and spent his ten-dollar fee on a copy of 'Royal Road to Card Magic.' He had now officially begun his own Royal Road into becoming the knowledgeable and highly individual performer that he has blossomed into. Jay is still a voracious reader of every kind of magic book. Talking with Jay it is impossible not to be impressed by the scope of the magical information that he has at his manicured fingertips

At age 18 Jay moved to California to attend the prestigious San Francisco Art Institute. He was also attracted to San Francisco because of the thriving street performing scene. It had been instrumental in the development of many of his favorite performers including Harry Anderson, The Raspyni Brothers and Frank Olivier. Upon arriving in the Bay City he took his own magic to the streets and began to develop the high-energy skills and distinctive look that define him today.

The first big break in Jay's career was when he became a favorite performer for the legendary Rock n' Roll promoter Bill Graham. Graham booked him for repeated performances at the famous Fillmore West and Warfield Theatre, where he performed backstage for such iconic rock and rollers such as the Rolling Stones. He quickly became a very popular performer in the San Francisco and Silicone Valley area with the help of these ultra-hip credentials.

Alexander's second break was the release of a popular magic DVD-Rom that introduced Jay to the national spotlight and resulted in a series of appearances on major television interview shows. This project was a perfect blend of ground breaking technology and performance skills that have remained a personal trademark to this day. It is hard to tell which topic he enjoys talking about most-Apple or Magic!

The long hair and 'wild' clothing that were integral to Jay's style might have made his entry into the corporate market a difficult one--- not in Silicone Valley where he quickly became to 'go to' guy for the wildly successful high-tech and dotcoms' that were flourishing in the area. His distinctive appearance was ideal for a young hip computer companies. His success has continued building from those days and he is now one of the highest paid corporate magicians in the country.

There is a lot more to Jay Alexander than you see onstage, and it only takes a few minutes in his company to feel the warmth and humanity that illuminate his professional persona. His generosity and caring are evident in the way he gives back to his friends and the community in general.

Every January for the last 9 years Jay has performed a fund raising show to raise money for Arts & Music programs for schools in his hometown in Northern California. He began this series of shows when he looked at how many benefits he was appearing in and how often the full cash returns were not finding their way to the cause. He has now raised over $80,000 for this excellent cause, and every year he sells out a 700-seat theatre in which he stages the event.

This is just a brief introduction to a very individualized performer and I am looking forward to being able to cover his philosophy and guidelines to performing in my upcoming article. I learned a huge amount from Jay during our interview and am looking forward to being able to share some of it in my future writings.

8. Amazing Invite System - Lead Generation - #317 - Kyle Peron
--------------------------------------------
Message by Kyle Peron
magic4u02@aol.com
http://www.kyleandkellymagic.com
http://www.kpmagicproducts.com

So how do you do lead generation in such a way that you not only brand yourself well, not only make the client happy but also do so in such an easy way that takes you little or no effort at all? This was the problem I wanted to solve for my own shows (and clients) a while back.

As a professional graphic designer, I feel I came up with the perfect solution and I wanted to share it with you all as you have been so good to me. It is too good to keep to myself and it will add benefit to you.

I wanted to create a truly well thought out lead generation control system. A means in which you can gain leads for shows before, during and longer after your show is over. A system that is easy to use, easy to set up and easy to put into place. In fact it is so easy that if you can send an email and attach a file, you are done. That simple.

The 'system' is set up so that I place your photo or logo and your FULL contact information into a designed and professional looking invite. This way the invite is branded exclusively to you. It has your image and your contact information.

This system is a perfect way you will beat the pants off your competition --- you can and will get the gigs you want to be doing.

You then receive your customized invites in JPG format so that it can be used / printed in any application.

They (it is) are delivered to you via email. You are sent one 'page' with 3 invites in a 8.5 by 11 format and all you have to do is send them to your client for usage. They are even set up so that it makes cutting them easy and printing them even easier. It is that simple.

Now your client has an easy way to send invites out that you provide to them. Think how much your client is going to appreciate you solving a need they have by providing it to them. You get increased value from the client and a win-win for you both.

Great for (but not limited to).....

School shows, Birthday's, Churches, Private or Public Gigs, Corporate events -Etc.

This (new dynamite) invite system is fast and easy to use. Plus, your name gets remembered before, during and after the show is over. This is an amazing way to market yourself and use it as a lead generation tool.

So you realize if I am providing a piece of paper to my clients, then it is either made of gold or the results from what is printed on it can attract the equivalent of gold = money!!! That's right the bottom line is a system created to generate more gigs for you. At the same time you are providing a powerful solution to your clients that they will absolutely love.

As you can see it is super simple and turn-around (on a customized invite design) can often be done in a mere 120 hours or less for those who would like to have one created for them.

WOW!!! I know right!!!

Another wild thing about this is all the artwork and the licensing rights are yours to use for the lifetime of your business.

I am sharing this with you all because it is something I personally have used for years and it works. It is so easy to use and it gets you gigs. It gets you noticed and it gets your information into the hands of every person at the event.

If you would like to see a sample of the invites or to get more information on this invite system including crazy low pricing, please send me an email at magic4u02@aol.com. I will send you out a sample and information that really shows you how this works. When you see how low I am offering this for, you may think I am totally nuts and I guess I am.

I am doing this because you my readers have been very good to me over the years and I want to give you all something back that I know you can use that will be a success for you.

So do not delay, send me an email at magic4u02@aol.com and let me provide a sample and information to you. I look forward to hearing from you.

Let's make this happen for you!

9. Magic - Art, Craft or Neither? (Bruce Gold - Part 2 of 3)
--------------------------------------------
Message by Anthony Darkstone Europe/USA

Introduction

Bruce Gold is a comedy magician, stand-up comic and Creative consultant from Hollywood, California. He has appeared on numerous TV shows in the USA including, Masters of Illusion, Evening at the Improv, the sitcom Full House and Oprah.

He is well known from his role as the manic magician in an award winning "got milk" TV commercial. In early October, his shows at The Magic Castle were greeted by wildly enthusiastic audiences. The TV show Masters of Illusion is now airing internationally and will be broadcast in The USA in 2014. Variety Magazine described him as, "A funny man of considerable charm who deftly combines humor and hocus-pocus."

Magic - Art Craft or Neither?
Commentary by Bruce Gold

Skip ahead thirty years and I am standing in the Los Angeles Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) to see a showing by a renowned modern artist whose work includes neon signs with phrases like; "Run From Fear" and "Fun From Rear." I was wholly unimpressed by what I saw. Turning a corner in the gallery I came upon a rectangular lucite case affixed to the wall. It was transparent, about four inches deep and in the lower half of it, sticking out of a perfectly round hole in the wall was a two foot length of black electrical cord that ran vertically up the center of the box where it's last few inches split in two and was topped by yellow twist-caps.

I stopped to look closer, delighted to have stumbled upon this work of subtle whimsy. The artist was commenting on the way electrical wires seem to grow within our walls like a vine and when given light, they burst forth and bloom. At least, that was my interpretation. I bent down to read the title of the work printed on a small white card beside the box. It read: "The artwork for this space is under repair." Apparently, this was not a work of art, merely the box in which an artwork would reside. To me, this empty box and wire had more artistic merit than most of what I saw that evening. It also proved that art, like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder.

Let me offer one more story before putting things in context: A few years ago I attended an art fair that was made up dozens of artists who'd rented booths along a downtown street, to display and sell their work. All manner of artwork was available, from expensive original oil paintings and bronze sculptures to affordable t-shirts and posters. There was something for everyone who enjoys art and so too it goes with magic. There is something for everyone.

16. The Magic Of Celebrating Illusion
--------------------------------------------
Message by Lawrence Hass (US)

I am delighted to announce the publication of a major new book by Robert E. Neale: "The Magic of Celebrating Illusion."

During the years 1998-2000, Bob Neale wrote three extended essays for magicians on the three major themes of magic: Illusion, Wonder, and Magic itself. Over the next three years Theory and Art of Magic Press will be publishing these important essays in three separate books, each one supplemented by many new magic routines and presentations by Bob that fit the theme.

"The Magic of Celebrating Illusion" is the first installment of this "Trilogy of Magic." It was released last Friday (October 18) at the Magic and Meaning Conference in Las Vegas, where Bob was in attendance. "The Magic of Celebrating Illusion" is now available for purchase at www.TheoryandArtofMagic.com. It is a 344-page paperback; the retail cost is $29.99. Dealers should contact Murphy's Magic Supplies to purchase copies. A PDF version of the book will be available only at www.TheoryandArtofMagic.com within the next two weeks.

As I write in my extended introduction to this book, this "Trilogy of Magic" is the hub of the wheel to Bob Neale's entire approach to magic. Up until now, we have enjoyed many delightful and varied spokes of that wheel, but you are now able to begin to study the core of it.
