3. Magic Connection To JFK Assassination
--------------------------------------------
Message by Scott Wells, A.I.M.C. with Silver Star

On this 50th anniversary of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy (officially 22 November), we visit with Walter "Zaney" Blaney who has a strong belief that history may have been changed if Jack Ruby hadn't "delivered the letter" to Lee Harvey Oswald.

On this week's Magic & Martinis' Thursday update (which happens to be my birthday, thank you for all the well wishes and greetings), I chat with Walter on The Magic Word Podcast about a phone call from Alton C. Sharpe in Chicago to Tom Palmer (aka Tony Andruzzi) in Dallas early on the morning that Oswald was shot. Walter has his opinions, but you be the judge. This is just another pin in the conspiracy cushion.

Hear it all plus more (such as the Zapruder film that Walter saw) on this week's podcast at:

There is now another way to follow what's happening on The Magic Word. Please keep up to date and follow everything on Twitter by following @MagicWordPod http://twitter.com/MagicWordPod And of course if you haven't "Liked" us on Facebook, then what's holding you back? 5. Siegfried & Roy: Unique In All The World - Sold Out!
--------------------------------------------
Message by Diana Zimmerman (US)

Over the past few months, so many people have emailed and called about purchasing the Siegfried & Roy Collectors' book: "Siegfried & Roy: Unique in All The World." With the Holidays approaching, it does, indeed, make a spectacular gift. Only 500 copies of this stunning collectors edition were printed, so it's not surprising that it is virtually sold out-only the two books that were held back by the publisher remain for sale.

With its beautiful white and gold clamshell, full-color poster, actual piece of the outdoor marque that stood so majestically in front of the Mirage, illusion and costume sketches, and all of the other original and reproduced ephemera, it is like no other book ever published-or possibly that ever will be published. The two remaining collector Sets are complete with signed bookplates by Siegfried & Roy.

The publisher has decided to make them available for the original published price of $695.00. They will be sold on a first come first served basis. If you missed your chance before, contact me, Diana Zimmerman, directly, at diana@cmsbiz.com you can still see the images at www.noesispublishing.com

Once they are gone, the only way to own it will be by purchasing it through the resale market. Thank you for all your support and incredible reviews of the book. - Diana

6. Remarkable Magic #328 - Nick Lewin
--------------------------------------------
Message by Nick Lewin (US)

Phases and stages. (Part one)

I have recently received emails from Magic New Zealand readers who asked if I could write a column that shares a little about my own journey as a magician. I have written plenty about magic and magicians through my own viewpoint but never a timeline that ties the thoughts into my personal magic roadmap. Well, I am going to attempt to do so in the next four issues.

I was born in 1952, in the county of Surrey, England, in a little village called Thames Ditton. I am the youngest of three brothers and NO ONE in my family had any interest in magic at all. I didn't discover magic in the traditional way-the magic set for Christmas when I was eleven. Though I have a very clear memory of being entranced by a box of practical jokes (nails through finger etc.) that I received at a very early age.

The first time I saw real magic, that I remember, was on television and it was the wonderful David Nixon. I remember him performing a card in cigarette routine in particular. I also very clearly recall watching Chan Canasta, Robert Harbin and Tommy Cooper on TV. I definitely became interested in magic due to their performances. Comedy Magic and Mentalism-not much has changed in my world!

There used to be a small section in my favorite toy shop that had a section devoted to magic trick manufactured by a company called 'Ellison's Magic' and it was there that I bought those first classic tricks which we all buy, plastic 'cups and balls,' vase and ball etc. I wish I still had copies of all those original tricks.

My first instructor was a gentleman named Charles Ellis who sang in the church choir with my Father. I badgered my dad into getting me assigned to assisting Mr. Ellis in his annual performance at the church garden party. I remember him showing me an amazing trick with silver rings that linked together-I was captivated

I immediately wanted to follow in his footsteps and by age eleven I was putting on my own little shows. The first 'big' show that I remember was when we lived in Wimbledon and it was to be presented along with my best friend and magic partner James Stevens. Jim had just taught me the Zombie and I was in awe of his skills.

We were to perform at the local cinema during their Saturday morning kids performance. I remember planning a 45-minute show and being very upset when the cinema manager told us that he thought 10 minutes was long enough. How right he was! The show went very smoothly and my indignation at the truncated running time quickly disappeared.

By the age of 14 we had moved to the little village of Cuckfield in Sussex and I was in full throttle as a young magician. I was performing a combination of comedy tricks and manipulative magic. My performance highlight was the Ron Macmillan billiard ball routine, which I had mastered after pestering my Dad to make those pesky spring-loaded clips. I closed the show with the Linking Rings.

I remember that at this time I displayed every prop I owned on a big table for all of my shows-- even If I didn't use them! When I joined the Sussex Magic Circle I began to realize that this was a rather unsophisticated approach. It was a big step for me joining the magic club and I was always excited the week of our meetings. It was during one of these meetings that I met my first real mentor Roy Cowl.

Roy was totally bald, dressed in black and owned a huge python that lived in a glass box in his living room. I found all these factors very exotic. Roy taught me a great deal about magic but most importantly he introduced me to a man who was very instrumental in my development as a magician Mr. Ken Brooke. I am eternally grateful to Mr. Cowl for doing so.

Roy and I travelled up from Brighton together one day to Ken's newly opened studio at 145, Wardour Street in the racy London neighborhood of Soho, in the heart of London's West End. Ken had just opened his studio and it was very impressively NOT a shop. It even had a couch and a (magic) bar in it. After we all drank cups of tea, Ken asked me to perform my linking Ring routine for him and when I finished he complimented me on it.

I then sat on the couch and watched Ken perform his routine, I was astounded, when Ken asked me what I thought of it I replied, "…but with my rings some of them were already joined together and there was a gap in one of them." Ken looked at me and smiling said, "We will make a magician of you yet…."
Next week we will see how he went about it.

7. Festival Show Content - #320 - Kyle Peron
--------------------------------------------
Message by Kyle Peron (US)
magic4u02@aol.com
http://www.kyleandkellymagic.com
http://www.kpmagicproducts.com

So what do you have as the content of your show? What is it that your show should contain to be able to perform for festivals and have them work effectively?

First we should talk about the typical length of a festival show and what festivals tend to gravitate more towards.

I do a 30 minute show and realized early on that this is really the ideal length for any festival performance. The reason for this is two-fold:

1) The festival is all about people moving around from one place to another. There is so much to see and do, that anything longer than 30 minutes starts to become a nuisance and you tend to lose the crowd. The festival also must appeal to the venders who are paying for spots to be there to sell their wares. Because of this, festivals want to keep folks moving around on a consistent basis.

2) 30 minutes is also an ideal time for a performance. It gives people a moment to rest, and eat something from the food vendors. Your performance gives them a reason to stay put for a little while.

You also want to keep your routines visual as well as keep them shorter and more compact. A visual routine will draw those in that may be walking by your performance area. They will see the visual nature of the show and tend to be curious. Curiosity really does make people want to stay and watch and once they do, you usually can hook them into staying longer.

If you do the shorter style routines, these people that stopped to watch you half way through a routine, have a reason to stay as they will not feel they are lost or left out. They will only have to wait maybe a minute before they get included into a new routine and there for feel more a part of your overall performance.

When working festivals make sure you cater to a family audience and not just the kids. By tailoring the show in this fashion, you will keep more people watching you for a longer period of time. Festivals are geared towards getting families to spend the day out together. By having a show that appeals to the entire family, gives you more value to the festival.

Certainly you can have a festival show that is for the kids only. You may choose to do this because it fits your style and who you are. You may also choose to create one as another offering. However, if you decide to go this route, make sure you approach the festival by asking for their children's entertainment chairperson. Many festivals will have a children's area and you can work towards getting booked for that area.

However, I try and entertain every single person in that audience in some way. That is what is important to me. This is why I make sure our shows cater to all age levels from 3 to 103. You make your routines vary to allow for this.

Many of you will realize that a lot of what you already perform will carry over perfectly for a festival show. Therefore, many of you have a great base show already from which you can learn to adapt and tweak to make it work ideal for the festival situation.

Another thing you will want to do is keep your routines angle proof. In festival shows, your audience is never really controlled as much as you may want it to be. People will stand and sit all over the place. Try and do routines and acts that are not dependent on angles and it will serve you much better.

Have a good combination of a visual opener with comedy and of course audience interaction. This combination makes for a show that flows well and gets people involved. The key is reaction and interaction. I want to engage the audience as much as I can. My client wants to hear an audience having a great time.

If you have illusions, then feel free to do them as they do add a lot of value to a festival show and they can increase your income as well. However, do not feel that you MUST do illusions to be able to work festivals. Even if you are a strolling performer only, you can provide a strolling entertainment package that works for you and for the festival you are seeking to perform for.

As you work on your festival show, keep in mind you are working outside. You must take weather into consideration with what you do and account for heat, wind and other situations that come up.

I hope this helps and give you a basic idea of what your festival show content should consist of.

8. David Stahl?
--------------------------------------------
Message by Stan Allen, Editor of MAGIC Magazine

If you're not familiar with our cover subject this month, that's not really surprising. David Stahl, like so many others, is busy being a full-time magician. His chosen field is corporate events, predominately tradeshows, and he has been working in that arena for over twenty years. During that time, David has established a few unlikely rules and collected some amazing stories.

One of his rules is to never perform for other magicians, which explains why you might not be familiar with him. And one of the amazing stories starts with a phone call from a longstanding client, asking, "If we could get you on an airplane, seated next to the vice president of purchasing, you would have three hours with him. Do you think you could convince him to take an appointment with us by the time you land?"

Read the whole story in the December 2013 issue of MAGIC Magazine. Plus, Wittus Witt's extensive piece on the "private theaters" of Germany, mentalist Bob Cassidy in his own words, four amazing tricks from Steven Hobbs, and a lot more! Visit www.MAGICmagazine.com

Watch this and see what Sorcerers Safari Magic & Performance Camp is all about - mentalists battling, card flourish showdowns at the Magic Camp Corral and famous magicians all over the place.

After watching this documentary you'll see what makes magic camp so special and why campers keep coming back year after year. While the grounds are amazing, the teaching is top quality and the nightly shows are stellar, magic camp is much more than the sum of its parts - this documentary helps explain why.

While we were hoping to stage an MCW every two years, the next being in 2014, recent events, however, indicate that this is now not possible.

We will, however, renew our efforts to make Magicol the preeminent publication for those interested in magic history and collectibles.

We regret the inconvenience for those of you who have already blocked in the dates.

14. Broken Wand - Parker Swan (1928-2103)
--------------------------------------------
Message by George Schindler (US)

C. Parker Swan died peacefully in his home in Northborough, Mass November 16.

Parker was a Life Member of the Society of American Magicians and has been a member for 53 years. He was the Dean of Assembly #16 and its 1992 "Magician of the Year". His interest in magic began with a" Mysto Magic Set". From 1942 to 1946 he worked at the Holden Magic Shop in Boston for Herman Hanson. While there he learned his performing skills, met many famous magicians and made many lasting friendships.

For many years he performed in New England and developed his comedy talents. We all remember his hilarious convention routines performed with his wife Claire. Their acts included "Prunes of all Nations", "Fruits I have Worked With" and his lecture "How to Force a Watermelon." Parker also invented the small Doll House assembled in front of his audience which produced endless silks, streamers and flowers.

In addition to his sidesplitting magic performances he spent time as a valuable player in the Society of American Magicians; serving as RVP, on the Convention Site Committees and as Chairman of the Commemorative Stamp Committee. He is survived by his wife Claire, two daughters and a son.
