Message by Nick Lewin (US)

Remarkable Magic #329.
In the mid-1960s I marketed myself assiduously as a kid's party magician and saved every penny I made to buy tricks and tuition from Ken Brooke. Almost every week, gigs permitting, I would take the train to London and continue my magical education from Ken. His tuition fee was an astronomical guinea (one pound and one shilling) for each half hour. The best money I ever spent.

The routines I studied one-on-one with Ken included, The Linking Rings, The Multiplying Bottles, The Nemo Rising Cards, Sponge Balls, Coins Through Table and best of all his Electric Hair/Paper Balls Over Head routine. I also got to meet many wonderful magicians during these years including, Tony Slydini, Fred Kaps, Tommy Cooper, Billy McComb, Pat Page, Maurice Fogel and a host of others. It was quite simply the perfect way to become a magician and I look back on it with great happiness. Ken became a dear friend and mentor right up until the sad moment of his death.

By now I was performing in cabarets and clubs in Southern England and I used my salary to work my way through a little advanced education at London's 'Guildhall School of Music & Drama.' I'm not too sure what I really learned studying classical theatre but I'm absolutely sure that I learned a great deal more working in London nightclubs such as 'The Blue Angel' and the 'Celebrity Club.' I would often perform 4 or 5 shows a night and it was one of the greatest learning experiences in my entire life.

Another proving ground for me as a young performer where the numerous pubs and clubs scattered throughout the suburbs of London. These gigs were usually formatted as talent contests and have left me with a deeply rooted dislike and mistrust of all forms of competitive booking. I guess those gigs left scars that haven't quite healed over yet.

I mentioned that I met Billy McComb and I was a huge fan of his work from the very first time I saw him perform the Gypsy Thread at a London Society of Magicians event at the Conway Hall. I also met Billy after a cabaret show in Sussex and found him to be a wonderfully warm and friendly person. However Ken was no fan of McComb and I did not really strike up my great friendship with Billy until 1974 when I had moved to Los Angeles.

Why did Ken have such severe reservations about anyone as wonderful as McComb? Well, he did eventually tell me and I once mentioned it to Billy, although he denied it I am pretty sure from his reaction that it was an incident that had actually occurred. What was it? I don't often tell anyone the story, however if you get me drunk on tequila one night at a convention it might be shared! Sufficient to say that I consider these two men as the finest I have ever met in the magic world.

In 1969 I worked my first cruise ship booking, which took me to the Mediterranean and opened up a line of work that I continue to profitably and pleasurably mine right up to this day. This is one field of work that has really expanded and get better as the years go by and nightclub bookings have declined. It has been very good to me over the years.

In 1973 I met my wife Susan after returning from a cruise gig that took me to Australia and we fell in love and married in the same church I had been named after and was christened in. No, it wasn't St, Nick's but a rather more somber St Nicholas. It was the same church that our eldest daughter was christened in quite a few years later.

Susan was from Los Angeles and in January 1974 we moved to California and another whole era of my magical journey began. I was of course very excited to be moving to the city that contained that Mecca of all things magical-The Magic Castle. I had heard a great deal about the Castle from Ken who had struck up a very warm but slightly unlikely friendship with Dai Vernon during one of his visits to the United States.

Arriving in Los Angeles we had $50 dollars to our name and for several months I worked at selling clothing in a mall, this is the only time in my life that I have ever supported myself by doing anything other than magic. I used the time to plan out my future as a performing magician and work on Americanizing my 'Oh, so English' show.

Curiously enough I performed at Milt Larsen's Mayfair Music Hall in Santa Monica before I worked at the Magic Castle. However. It was not long before I began my magical apprenticeship at the Castle. That is another whole story though and will be continued in next week's column.

7. Scout Shows - Event Schedule - #321 - Kyle Peron

The Cub Scout banquet season will soon be upon us. The single most asked question I receive is how much a person has to wait to do their show and often times it is at the end of the event when everyone is tired and wants to go home. The question becomes how does one resolve this?

Let me answer this as best as I can to try and assist you with this issue. It is a very common question and one which many face when working scout banquets. However, there is a way in which to educate them by being a solutions provider to them. By doing this it is s win-win situation for you and for them as well.

First the order they run is more than 3 main areas that most think. It is actually more detailed than that and most cub packs follow the same items but many in different orders. Let me list them here for you as to what the cub packs usually do at the banquets that you should get accustomed to.

Typical Line Up:
- Introduction by Cub Master
- Bringing in of the colors (Flag ceremony)
- Reciting of the scout oath and motto followed by the Pledge of Allegiance
- Banquet (usually buffet style) announcement of the first tables to go up
- Continue of table announcements for buffet
- If they have a cake contest (many do) they will announce winners at this point
- Desert is served
- Friends in scouting program is done usually before or most likely after dinner
- Awards ceremony
- Entertainment
- Cross over for Arrow of Light (of not part of initial awards
- closing ceremony

That is typically what tends to happen at most banquets and it is good to familiarize yourself with it. The more you know, the more you can help yourself and help them as well.

Now this list is subject to change and it can go in different orders. However, I have found that most packs do follow this format and order.

Kids do get tired and you do find that entertainment at the end tends to cause the parents to just want to get home. This leads to not as much interaction and even some parents taking their kids home before or even during your show.

Most entertainers do not speak up to clients. Now by this I do not mean yelling or demanding. I mean talking openly to the client to assist in a solutions that benefits both parties. Many cub packs are looking for information and solutions YOU can provide to them.

So what do you do? First step is educate yourself on the order I listed above and get to know it well. Then suggest to them that to make things run smoothly on the day or evening of their event, you have a suggestion for the schedule that will not interfere with what needs to take place but will actually enhance it and help them out at the same time. By saying this, you will peak their interest and opens you up to discussing it with them.

You state that often times there is time after the dinner and before the awards where the kids get done eating and are running around while the parents try and clean up and get awards organized. The best thing to do is to have the dinner and then have YOU act as MC to announce the Friends in Scouting. This gives the cleaning staff to get things cleaned up and awards set in place without being rushed. Then you tell them to have the show right after that. This way the kids are still energetic and enthusiastic and it gives them a time to get the kids up front so that tables can be put away and cleaned etc.

Now another benefit to this for them is that once the show is over, the kids are already seated up front and so it is a great and easy segue right into the awards portion of the program without any downtime for them. Things flow much better and it also gives more prominence to the awards and cross over which should be the highlight of the evening.

Now some folks think having it first is the way to go and it would be for the entertainer. However, if we are professionals, we have to find a common ground with the client so it works both ways. They will always do the welcome announcement and the calling of the colors first. They will then want to do the meal as often times it is catered or set in such a way that the food must be served early for it to work logistically for them.

So doing the show first for cub banquets is not usually going to happen as it does not work with most cub pack schedules and logistics that they must adhere to. If you take my advice, you can work it right after the dinner without issue and without any problems. It is a win-win for them and you solve needs for yourself and for the cub pack.

It also gives you the possibility to offer an upgrade package to your offerings by providing strolling or table side magic during the dinner. The tables often have to wait any ways to be called up and this is dead time where you can have an added benefit to the pack of which they will pay you for.

Hope this helps. Please ask me any questions you may have as I would be happy to answer them for you. I have a book all on working the scout market called "Blue and Gold" and you can get more information about it at http://www.kpmagicproducts.com. Thanks.

Magician Roland Hill passed away this morning at his home in Burbank. He was noted for his bullet catch performances, and performed on the cruise ships for many years. Roland will be remembered by magicians who attended Sunday lectures. For the past many years he sat in the front row of the Parlour and audio taped the lectures for the Magic Castle library.

Important Announcement from the Head Vulture

I am 81 years old and would like share and enjoy magic with old friends and collectors all over the world. I have asked a team of people to help organize this convention in Cincinnati next June 5-7, 2014.

This convention is not affiliated with the IBM, SAM, MCA, ABC or XYZ. It is simply a gathering of people that love magic history and want to help preserve and collect it.

I wish we could have everyone that wants to attend be able to. But we are limited by the facilities for the number of attendees that we can handle for our programs. Think of this convention as a Midwest version of the LA History Conference or New England Magic Collectors Association which have the similar space limitations.

The initial invites were sent out two week ago. If you have not received it, contact me and we will check our list and make sure we had the proper address. We will be keeping a waiting list for this convention.

Again, the Cincinnati Magic Collector's Convention will be held in Cincinnati on June 5-7, 2014.

Magician Cosentino conjures a surprise win on Dancing with the Stars as Tina Arena eliminated

COSENTINO has pulled a rabbit out of a hat and grabbed a surprise win in Dancing with the Stars.

The Aussie magician, who was long odds for victory, triumphed over Home and Away actress Rhiannon Fish. The night's biggest surprise came when Tina Arena was eliminated after the earlier Cha Cha round.

"This is crazy - I did not expect this at all," Cosentino said. Dance partner Jessica Raffa described Cosentino as "the best student I've ever had".

"He respects me every day. He respects my teaching," Raffa said. It was her first win in five seasons on the Channel 7 dance show.

Cosentino and Raffa cemented victory with an emotional Freestyle routine to Kissing You by Des'ree.

The biggest shock of the night definitely came when Arena was eliminated. The chart-topping singer had been leading the competition on 74 points but exited due to the lowest viewer votes.

Judge Todd McKenney let out an audible 'no' when host Daniel MacPherson announced Arena's elimination. Judge Helen Richie had just praised Arena as "the complete package".

Old news but may be interesting to your readers.

In 1975, Pat and I were performing at the Collegate Theatre in London at the Magic Circle show, with Fred Kaps, Dick Zimmerman, Jay Marshall and Terry Seabroke, and ourselves as Geoff Ray & Pat. John Calvert was there during the week promoting his show the following week, and we got to know him very well, in the February he was booked for Blackpool and we met up with him again, after Blackpool, he came to stay with us in Shrewsbury for two nights, one of the stories, John told us of his duel with Primo Carnera,

Brains v Braun, I mentioned that I was a 5th Dan at Judo, and we had a little groundwork on the carpet, he was very strong but he was then 64 or 65, he and Tammy were wonderful friends, at the Centenary he was inviting people up to arm wrestle with him after I said 'I nearly came up' he laughed and said 'if you had, I would have kicked your butt', a wonderful memory of a great magician and a gentleman.

I will miss his column in the linking ring. R.I.P John.
