3. Brick & Mortar Magic Shop
--------------------------------------------
Message by Scott Wells, A.I.M.C. with Silver Star
Everyone
is aware of the vanishing Brick and Mortar (B&M) magic
shops around the world. For those who don't know what B&M
stores are, that just means physical magic shops where one
can physically walk into a real store, pick up and look
at real magic props, leaf through real books made of paper,
get advice from local and visiting magicians in the store,
get personalized instructions, and learn what magic book/prop/gimmick
is right for you as suggested by the magic dealer. These
traditional stores seem to be going the way of the buggy
whip (the what?).
In
this week's The Magic Word podcast, we hear the perspectives
from three different magic dealers who each have (or had)
a physical B&M shop. Steve Lancaster, from Tulsa, Oklahoma,
talks about the rise and fall of the costume business in
magic shops. Denny Haney, from Baltimore, Maryland, tells
us the real secrets of why B&M shops need to exist.
And Emory Williams, from Tucson, Arizona, talks about his
shop that went from brick and mortar to wheels and gasoline
(petrol).
Hear
it all on this week's podcast at: http://TheMagicWordPodcast.com
You
can listen online, download the MP3 file or get it from
iTunes. And don't forget the free app at: http://app.cat/themagicword/

6. Remarkable Magic #341 - Nick Lewin
--------------------------------------------
Message by Nick Lewin (US)
It
is all about the Focal Point.
Last
week I made some general observations about focus and how
it can be applied to the writing, performance and general
presentation of magic shows. I had some great feedback from
magicians in what I had to say on this topic. Let's take
it a stage further
This
week I want to discuss a very specific application of my
general thesis of the importance of focus to a performing
magician. In particular I am going to focus on the strictly
visual aspect of this matter. I will do this by concentrating
on one effect and then give a more general indication of
how these theories can improve any magician's performance.
To
be specific, I want to go into a little more detail about
the term 'Focal Point.' I have touched on this topic before
and consider it a very important area for a magician to
concentrate on. My first introduction to this term came
from the amazingly wise English magician Ken Brooke. It
arose while he was teaching me his version of the Linking
Rings.
Although
I did not realize it at the time, what I was really learning
in Ken's studio was his version of Dai Vernon's 'Symphony
of the Rings' with one or two interesting variations. In
the context of this article let me zero in on just a couple
of these changes.
At
the time, like most magicians, I felt that the Linking Rings
was not fully completed until you unlinked the set of rings
at the end of the routine and displayed them separately
after the various linked formations. It seemed orderly,
logical and had a nice sense of symmetry. However, Ken ended
his version of the classic by going from the chain of six
to spinning five rings on just one ring. He felt that anything
beyond that was anti-climactic to a lay audience.
A
very specific form of focus was inherent in this decision,
along with the choice to use six rings instead of the (at
the time) much more common choice of eight rings. These
two factors made it easier for the audience to focus on
the core effect of taking separate rings and linking them
together.
Along
the journey in Ken's tutoring he placed a great deal of
emphasis on where the audiences' attention and visual focus
was during the routine. The exact spot where the action
supposedly took place was the area that Ken called the focal
point. I have always kept his teachings in the back of my
mind and looked for other areas where they could be beneficially
applied. Remember a human being can only look in a limited
area of a specific place at any one moment.
It
is easy for a lay audience to see the various manipulations
of the rings as a blur of action and somewhat closer to
juggling than individual feats of magic creating a unified
chain of events that build on each other. When you slow
down the action and have a spectator hold one side of a
ring while you concentrate on the upper section and perform
a 'crash through' link, you really punch home the key effect.
As
a stand-up comedy magician I have gone to great lengths
to try and be very aware of where the audience's attention
is while I try and juggle the dual disciplines of letting
them see the magic I am doing without losing the benefits
of looking at my face as I present the comedy. Verbal comedy
is stronger when the audience sees your facial expressions
as you say the lines. It causes them to focus on what you
are saying and the words you are using.
Sometimes
you can dramatically improve the reaction to what you are
doing magically just by moving the important actions closer
to your face. In TV terms blocking the action in terms of
a close up shot and raising your hands from performing their
movements somewhere between the middle of your chest and
your jaw line. Sometimes you want to raise the action even
higher.
What
makes the 'Gypsy Thread' such a powerful effect is the moment
when you raise the broken pieces to your mouth and blow
on the bundle as they gracefully restore into one length.
The audience knows exactly where to look and can be influenced
in their reaction by your facial expression.
It
is this kind of attention to the 'Focal Point' that allows
me to perform smaller magic to large audiences with very
great effect. When you want to open up the 'Visual Theatre'
then it becomes a definite statement and adds nicely to
the variety and texture of your performance.
For
those especially interested a full scale explanation of
my thoughts on this topic are contained in my 'Ultimate
Linking Finger Ring' routine and my DVD '20210s,' if you
wish to explore these ideas more thoroughly than is practical
in this short column.

What
got you into magic and performing for children? No, not
the tricks you saw or the magician at your birthday party.
I am also not even talking about the magic shop you may
have gone to when you were a child or the magic set you
got as a gift. What I am talking about is something deeper
that I like to think we all share. What is it inside of
us that makes us realize that performing magic for children
is not just something we want to do... but something we
HAVE to do?
If
you look deep inside yourself you can probably pinpoint
a certain moment in time. A time perhaps when you realized
that even if you never got paid to perform for children,
you still would do it anyway because you just have that
desire to entertain kids.
But
I think something happens to many of us children's entertainers.
We seem to forget what got us into children's magic in the
first place. We seem to allow ourselves to get so hung up
on the show and the routines and the business and all the
aspects of what we do, that we forget why we are doing it
in the first place.
I
think this can be a big problem. The reason is that we then
just go through the motions of the performance when there
really is nothing there at all. There is no substance because
your heart is not really in it. And the most important part
of this is that the children know it. Children can read
us adults better than we give them credit for.
So
how can we stop ourselves from going down this path of forgetting
who we are and why we do what we do? First, I think it is
important for any children's performer to get in touch with
the inner child inside of us.
The
inner child is often hidden so much because as an adult
we fear that touching base with our inner child is .. well
childish and immature. We as adults feel that we cannot
show our inner child because that is not what adults do.
But as a performer we are forgetting something. We forget
that we are entertainers first and magicians second. We
are there to entertain the children in the best way possible.
If this is true, then isn't this the perfect time to let
your inner child out?
As
a children's performer we are given a great gift of opportunity.
Think about it. We are given the chance to act like a child
again and to do so freely. We are given the opportunity
to be silly and goofy and funny because we know the kids
react positively to it and can relate so well to it.
It
is also that inner child inside of us that we need to remember
when we are performing. How many times have you done so
many shows on the same day or the same week that you find
your mind is just not where it should be? Probably a lot
of you right now can recall times like this vividly. It
happens to us all.
The
problem is that if we are just going through the motions,
are we really giving the children and the client the best
show we can possibly give? It is times like this where we
need to go back to remembering why we got into performing
children's magic in the first place.
Every
show you do for a child you really must learn to stop yourself
for a second and think. If we think hard enough we can always
remember that there is probably a kid in that audience that
is seeing a magician for the very first time. The reality
is when we realize that magician they are seeing for the
first time is YOU! That is a very big deal.
When
I perform for children I keep a few signs in my cases. One
of them reminds me of this very fact. It helps me put my
mind where it needs to be to make sure that child goes home
thinking highly of the experience and of magic in general.
So
why do you perform for children? Think about it long and
hard and remember what your answer is before you perform
your next kid's show. I think you will realize just how
magical it really can be.
As always I would love to hear from you. Please feel free
to contact me at magic4u02@aol.com. I look forward to it.

8. Magic - Art, Craft Or Neither - Paul Hallas (Part 2)
--------------------------------------------
Message by Anthony Darkstone USA/Europe
(An ongoing series with Special Guests)
At
the beginning of this series, I mentioned that I would be
including thoughts and musings from various guests who have
kindly shared their perspectives. In recent months, due
to personal commitments and a very busy travel schedule
I have not been able to submit to my column on a regular
basis. Nevertheless, I am back and to start things in a
wonderful fashion I have some interesting comments from
Paul Hallas. For the few who may need to know, Paul is a
superb International Mentalist with a unique performing
style.
I
met Paul a while back when he asked me to contribute to
`Mindful Mentalism II´ We had a lot of fun with that
and I was honored to be included alongside several leading
names. In the course of discussion a few months ago, I asked
him his views on Magic - Art, Craft or Neither. I was pleasantly
surprised when he came up with the following article. Although
it doesn't specifically address the point, it makes a better
one and it provides a wonderful perspective that very few
are able to discuss without his benefit of empirical experience.
Of necessity, I have divided his article into 3 sections.
FaceBook:
Paul Hallas
http://www.paulhallas.com/
Part
2.
Someone
once asked the late author Richard Adams (The Hitchhikers
Guide to the Galaxy etc.) if he could describe Americans
in as few words as possible, he thought a moment and replied,
"Easily bothered".
The
plus side of course, is that my new hosts are more positive
thinking generally and more supportive of ideas. I love
the opportunity of living here. Though for any entertainers
that move here it's generally a case of starting at the
bottom and struggling to get a foothold again. An event
planner in the U.K might get you a gig anywhere in the country
and it's pretty much drivable, starting from scratch in
a country as huge as the U.S.A. you might set your sights
a little more local, or at least within the state.
Having
talked about humor, I also have friends here who I would
consider have a great sense of humor. But then, this is
a land of extremes, people who like to see magic generally
really love it but on the other hand you're more likely
to meet people who think it offensive for religious reasons.
I've had comments from "I'm a Christian I don't believe
in magic" to someone telling a child that had just
seen sponge bunnies it was the work of the devil (those
examples came from the restaurant I work in).
To
be fair, you can get some that are against magic for religious
reasons in the UK but it's rarer. I recall in England once
doing a show with my local magic club in a church hall and
having someone stand up in my mental act and point out we
were on holy ground. Of course, being in England he was
promptly told by others to sit down and shut up, it was
a show!

On
Monday, March 17, St. Patrick's Day, at 8:00 pm on the main
stage, world famous Irish Fiddler Michael Burke will perform
in concert. He has been called Ireland's most lyrical fiddler.
At the forefront of traditional music for over 30 years,
he is known for his highly individual style--vibrant, expressive,
relaxed, and, at times, humorous. He is well known to international
audiences for his work with superlative Irish groups, from
the Bothy Band to Patrick Street and Celtic Fiddle Festival.
Burke's
extensive credits include recording and touring with both
Arlo Guthrie and Christy Moore in the 1970's, and with former
Bothy Band colleague Michael O Domhnaill in the 1980s. He
was a member of Tim O'Brien's American-Celtic crossover
band The Crossing, and in recent years has collaborated
with Oregon guitarist Cal Scott. In 2002 Burke was awarded
the NEA's National Heritage Fellowship, this country's highest
honor in the traditional arts. He has resided in Portland,
Oregon since the late 1970s, and in 2010 was inducted into
the Oregon Music Hall of Fame.
"The
great Irish fiddler Kevin Burke...plays the fiddle so smoothly,
with such buoyancy, and with such relaxed showmanship, that
even a large concert hall becomes intimate."
The New Yorker Magazine
"(His)
lyrical style
is always emotionally electric."
The Washington Post

back orchestra. Seats can be reserved by calling (434) 793-SHOW
