6. Remarkable Magic #345 - Nick Lewin

Message by Nick Lewin (US)
The
2014 Austin Magic Auction.
I
am delighted to share an account of the 2014 Austin Magic
Auction by my guest columnist Susan (aka Mrs. Nick) Lewin.
I had really wanted to attend the auction and was delighted
to read Susan's run down of the event. I will be there next
year-- it sounds great!
On
Saturday afternoon April 5, I was fortunate to spend time
at the annual World Famous Austin Magic Auction in Cedar
Park, Texas (a suburb of Austin) for IBM Ring 60 that has
been a standing tradition for 30 years. The auction was
well attended by magi from Austin, Dallas, Houston, San
Antonio and out of state. The entrance fee for everyone
including the auctioneers was ten dollars and well worth
the price of admission.
The
event was beautifully coordinated with masses of computerized
sales going on. The rotating auctioneers included the hilarious
David Hira, attorney Grant Walsh and fez fatale Scott Wells.
These magicians did an amazing job selling and demonstrating
hundreds of magic props and collector items over a ten-hour
span with grace, charm and wit. The effervescent auction
chairperson, Trixie Bond, was the perfect hostess and kept
everything flowing, handling all those minute details that
pop up during the course of an event.
The
auction was divided into two rooms: the silent auction and
the live auction. In the church hall, tables were set up
by category and each item was clearly marked, bagged and
computerized. My favorite table was the eclectic grab bag
table and I sized it up for eliminating a lot of Nick's
"junk" for next year. Fascinating to see all the
empty black trunks for sale: it looked like the Lewin garage.
The
sanctuary had a huge stage that held props and illusions
and the attendees sat in the pews. The auctioneers were
beautifully 'mic'd,' extremely talented at their job, keeping
it moving at a break neck pace. David Magee commented to
me on FaceBook: "You've been here three months and
we finally got you into church." My response was, "You
Texans roped me in."
The
kids from the Fantastic Magic Camp in their brightly colored
red tee shirts were hard at work distributing the auction
purchases and selling concessions. All the items were computerized
and well-marked. The bidding was intense and most items
sold until the very end when money was beginning to thin,
as well as the audience. Some might say they were "magicked
out" by 6 PM.
I
knew some of the magi including Alex Gutierrez, Doug Gorman,
Dwayne Stanton and David Hira and enjoyed meeting Chairperson
Trixie Bond, Paul Mimms, Michael Tallon and Co-chairman
J.D. Stewart.
The
ladies at the back of the room had every item bagged, labeled,
checked and paid for-it was a regular machine. They were
extremely efficient and Heather did a terrific job coordinating
offers on products for sale. I was thrilled that the six
of the seven items that we submitted sold. The ring's charge
is twelve percent and worth every penny.
With
true Texas hospitality, complimentary healthy snacks were
provided by Doc Seaton; these including nuts, tangerines,
water and my personal favorite Fritos. Pizza, spaghetti
and salad lunch were also available for purchase.
I
am looking forward to the World Famous Austin Magic Auction
of 2015 and have it marked in my datebook.

7. Festivals - Show Content - #336 - By Kyle Peron

So what do you have as the content of your show? What is
it your show should contain to be able to perform for festivals
and have them work effectively?
First we should talk about the typical length of a festival
show and what festivals tend to gravitate towards. I do
a 30 minute show and realized early on that this is really
the ideal length for any festival performance. The reason
for this is two-fold:
1) The festival is about people moving around from one place
to another. There is so much to see and do, that anything
longer than 30 minutes starts to become a nuisance and you
tend to lose the crowd. The festival also must appeal to
the venders who are paying for spots to be there to sell
their wares. Because of this, festivals want to keep folks
moving on a consistent basis.
2) 30 minutes is also an ideal time for a performance. It
gives people a moment to rest, and eat something from the
food vendors. Your performance gives them a reason to stay
put for a little while.
You also want to keep your routines visual as well as make
them shorter and more compact. A visual routine will draw
those in that may be walking by your performance area. They
will see the visual nature of the show and tend to be curious.
Curiosity really does make people want to stay and watch
and once they do, you usually can hook them into staying
longer.
If you do the shorter style routines, people that stopped
to watch you half way through a routine, have a reason to
stay as they will not feel they are lost or left out. They
will only have to wait maybe a minute before they get included
into a new routine and they will feel more a part of your
overall performance.
When working festivals make sure you cater to a family audience
and not just the kids. By tailoring the show in this fashion,
you will keep more people watching you for a longer period
of time. Festivals are geared towards getting families to
spend the day out together. Having a show that appeals to
the entire family. This gives you more value to the festival.
Certainly you can have a festival show that is for the kids
only. You may choose to do this because it fits your style
and who you are. You may also choose to create one as another
offering. However, if you decide to go this route, make
sure you approach the festival by asking for their children's
entertainment chairperson. Many festivals will have a children's
area and you can work towards getting booked for that area.
However, I try to entertain every single person in that
audience in some way. That is what is important to me. This
is why I make sure our shows cater to all age levels from
3 to 103. You make your routines vary to allow for this.
Many of you will realize that a lot of what you already
perform will carry over perfectly for a festival show. Therefore,
many of you have a great base show already from which you
can learn to adapt and tweak to make it work ideal for the
festival situation.
Another thing you will want to do is keep your routines
angle proof. In festival shows, your audience is never really
controlled as much as you may want it to be. People will
stand and sit all over the place. Try and do routines and
acts that are not dependent on angles and it will serve
you much better.
Have a good combination of a visual opener with comedy and
of course audience interaction. This combination makes for
a show that flows well and gets people involved. The key
is reaction and interaction. I want to engage the audience
as much as I can. My client wants to hear an audience having
a great time.
If you have illusions, then feel free to do them as they
do add a lot of value to a festival show and they can increase
your income as well. However, do not feel that you MUST
do illusions to be able to work festivals. Even if you are
a strolling performer only, you can provide a strolling
entertainment package that works for you and for the festival
you are seeking to perform for.
As you work on your festival show, keep in mind you are
working outside. You must take weather into consideration
with what you do and account for heat, wind and other situations
that come up.
I am happy to announce that my newest book, "FESTIVAL
MAGIC", is finished and is NOW available at http://www.kpmagicproducts.com/Festival_Magic.html
This 112pg book is filled with the most up to date information
on how anyone can work and succeed in the festival and fair
markets.
As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your
thoughts. So if you have any thoughts on my articles or
suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly

8. Magic - Art, Craft or Neither?
--------------------------------------------
Message by Anthony Darkstone USA/Europe
(An ongoing series with Special Guests)
At
the beginning of this series, I mentioned that I would be
including thoughts and musings from various guests who have
kindly shared their perspectives. This week, Mark Fisken
from Scotland, shares his thoughts on the topic.
Mick
Magic (Mark) is an extremely talented World Class Magical
Entertainer. As a result of his deep understanding of theatrical
skills he possesses the excellent ability of being able
to connect with his audiences regardless of whether they
are 8 or 80. He is a dedicated and skilful professional
who knows how to perform baffling magic that has a universal
entertainment appeal.
He
is truly an outstanding performer. Whether he is performing
as himself or in costume as the 2500 year old wizard Kramus
Nexifius he has a truly powerful effect on his audiences
and always leaves them completely enthralled. I am honored
to have worked with him at Falkland Palace - The Palace
of Magic and Stirling Castle. I am proud to be his friend.
Over the years, I have got to know him and his family and
I am greatly indebted to him and them for their outstanding
hospitality and grateful for the many kindnesses they have
shown me.
http://mickmagic.com/
Mark Fisken
Is
magic an art form, craft or neither? Firstly I feel I have
just been transported back in time to my English exam at
secondary school - Spring 1984. Lines of acne covered pupils
sitting in rows behind old fashioned school desks, scribbling
frantically under the gaze of an elderly retired teacher
as the big clock counted down the minutes. Is magic an art
form, craft or neither? Yes I read it correctly the first
time, not an easy question, the short answer suggests all
three would be the correct answer as I will try and explain.
I
have been a professional magician now for nearly twelve
years though practicing the 'Art' form since a young age
of five or six. I remember sitting in the front room with
my Grandfather as he showed me the penny through the table
trick. I also remember his brother, my Great Uncle teaching
me my first card trick a self -working mathematical story;
even now, it still puzzles and amazes people and dare I
say some magicians.
Now
at the age of 43, it is a privilege to perform my 'craft'
to hundreds of children of all ages throughout Scotland,
twelve years performing as myself, or as my characters Mick
Magic and internationally recognised Kramus Nexifius the
Magical Wizard, 'neither' performance I would regard as
a Craft or indeed an Art form.
Let
me explain an Artist tells the story through a brush using
colour, light and shade, his paintings and pictures being
the end of product of his mind's eye in the form of art
work for all to share and enjoy. A wood maker turns wood,
carves intricate patterns and shapes. The end result anything
from stunning furniture, to beautiful ornaments all representations
of his craft. So where does this leave me the humble magician
if I am neither an artist nor a craftsman? Simply, I am
a Magician - a Creator of Wonder!

10. The Japan Cup 2014
--------------------------------------------
Message by Steve Marshall (Japan)
Close-up
convention and international competition March 28 - 30 in
Tokyo
Review and Results
A
few weeks ago I wrote about the upcoming Japan Cup event
happening this month in Tokyo. Although I was only able
to attend the final day of the event, to see the competition
and a few lectures, I could see how excited all of the attendees
were who had attended the entire event. It was obvious to
me that it was three days packed with learning, seasoning,
inspiration, and time spent with friends, new and old.
The
big event was the contest on Sunday March 30. The contest
began at 9:30 am and, personally speaking, I applaud anyone
who is able to perform at this early hour! Especially in
a nerve wracking contest situation.
The
lineup of Judges for this event was very impressive and
included, Ton Onosaka, Shintaro Fujiyama, Shigeo Futagawa,
Ponta the Smith, (Japan) Yuji Yamamoto, (Korea) Paul Critelli
and David Corsaro (USA).
The
contestants were:
FINIR
(MO & Kouzaki) (Japan) With a 2 man comedy and magic
routine that involved one watching the other's "Magic
DVD" and trying to copy his cool style. The routine
ended with an interesting, and surprising, two man triumph
routine.
Park
Jin Sung (Korea) with a very innovative sponge ball routine
that included a very visual triple color change, a nice
growing sponge ball, and a big production of sponge balls
at the end.
Nobuyuki
Nojima (Japan) His entry was a novel "oil and water"
routine with playing cards. What made it very unique was
that Nobuyuki did the same effect over and over in a variety
of different characters and situations which made it very
entertaining as well as amazing. For his finally he actually
placed the cards in red/black alternating order between
two pieces of Plexiglas that were bolted together. Even
in this impossible situation the cards still separated into
all reds and all blacks.
Shota
Suzuki (Japan) This sixteen year old high school student
was very good technically and presentational. His "Jokers
are wild" routine highlights included some nice changes
where the jokers changed to other cards and culminated with
the entire deck all changing to jokers. His routine was
very imaginative and well thought out. I look forward to
watching this young man progress in the coming years.
Johnny
Toriaezu (Japan) Johnny (yes he's Japanese) presented a
nice polished act that flowed nicely and was technically
proficient as well. It included the production of four poker
chips that turned into coins and then traveled, one by one,
into a coffee cup that was covered by, what looked like,
just an ordinary cardboard coaster, the kind you would find
on any bar. He followed this with a series of vanishes and
reappearances using a pocket watch and a silk handkerchief.
At the end, the pocket watch changed into a big bell alarm
clock that began ringing.
Youri
(Japan) Youri presented a mentalism routine that began with
a ribbon being selected from a brandy snifter that was filled
with different colored ribbons. He then tied it to a combination
padlock and had different people call out the numbers which
ultimately opened to lock. The lock was vanished and found
in a locked box with the same ribbon attached and the lock
was once again opened using the same combination. The kicker
came when Youri told the spectator that he could keep the
lock. After that he did a very clean any card at any number
routine.
Ryuchi
Nakamura (Japan) this was a chop cup routine set to a late
night ghost story theme, with the appropriate spooky music
playing in the background. This was very imaginative with
the ball vanishing and reappearing at different spots on
the table. It also hopped in and out of the cup in very
surprising and eerie ways.
After
the hour and a half competition that moved along very well
here are the results:
The
Bronze Award Nojima Nobuyuki
The Silver Award Finir (MO + Kouzaki Akihito)
The Gold Award Johnny Toriaezu
Johnny Wong Future Award Park Jin Sung (Korea)
TMA Special Award Nojima Nobuyuki
Mt. Fuji Award Johnny Toriaezu
People's Choice Award Nojima Nobuyuki
The
real prize for all of the contestants was the personal feedback
given to them by the prestigious panel of judges listed
above. This invaluable information makes it really worthwhile
just to enter the competition!
The
thirteenth annual Japan Cup was a big success, here's to
the next one in 2015.

How
Technology, the Internet and the iPad are Changing a Magician's
Secret Work.
Technology
is all around us. So is magic. But while magic is a secretive,
ancient art, technology is credited for its relentless drive
towards innovation. Now, the two worlds are meeting head

"The Internet is a blessing and a curse for magicians,"
says Stuart Nolan, who calls himself a research magician.
For Nolan, the Internet is a curse because of the way people
like to post videos and share the secrets of the game. But
for magicians like Simon Pierro, the Internet has been a
blessing...

12. Tyneside Convention - The Friendly One!
--------------------------------------------
Message by Mandy Davis (UK)
Although
Tyneside is a small gathering of around one hundred and
fifty people, the event packs a big punch with some great
and unusual names filling the bill.
This
was, in fact, a well-packed two and a half days which followed
a week of shows for the pubic in the area. Friday morning
kicked off with a children's show to which the registrants
were invited; most of the theatre's stalls area was filled
with special needs children and their teachers or parents.
The rest of us sat above. The magician was the celebrated
Kimmo who romped through some classic effects with some
super routining. It was good to see the children's reactions
to the wonder and humour as well as how John coped with
the sometimes difficult lack of abilities from his volunteers.
His puppets, of course, stole the show. After the children
had gone we were treated to an hour's lecture explaining
Kimmo's philosophy and workings to bring together these
effects with such excellent results.
In
the afternoon Andi Gladwin lectured and this was good fun
with some very clever ideas. His combination of several
effects with four or five spectators on stage was worth
considering when looking for suitable family mentalism -
and his teaching of five moves in five minutes was exciting
and humorous, especially as he failed and had to give everyone
present a free download as compensation!
The
final lecture that day was particularly fascinating. Mark
Setteducati is a magician but also a prolific, and successful,
inventor of magic, toys and games. His current hit, Holografx,
is a blockbuster and he has many other great inventions
that have been highly sought after in their time. Mark talked
about his life from the early 1980s onwards and also told
us about his enormous collection of pens of all shapes and
sizes, from animals to puzzles, from simple to intricate.
This was a truly enjoyable and innovative lecture.
Both
nights of the convention had a gala show. Friday's was compered
by John Lovick, known as Gentleman Jack. He didn't impress.
Ed Hilsum, on the other hand, was elegant and charming with
his 'act as known' featuring candles, billiard balls, silks
and doves. Rod Laver keep the audience gasping and laughing
with his unusual ping pong ball juggling act. Morgan and
West's Victorian act included the divination of a handful
of coins and Needles from Mouth, both with the help of spectators.
Andi Gladwin showed us some fun stuff which included fitting
himself inside a giant balloon. Rod Laver was back with
sharp juggling knives and a small platform made up of short
planks and wine bottles. Finally Guy Barrett presented some
great illusions which included a Sawing Through on a medical
table and Metamorphosis.
As
soon as the show ended those who had the stamina were whisked
away by bus to the Headquarters hotel for a midnight show
with an optional hot buffet. Kimmo was the opening act,
using mouth add-ons to turn two volunteers into human ventriloquist
dummies. Simon Donald was the headline act, the man who
started Viz magzazine, playing the part of a street interviewer
trying to get audience members to help complete his survey.
He was an acquired taste but did get a lot of laughs for
his zany one liners.
Saturday's
early lecture was from John Lovick and I skipped that in
favour of some much needed sleep. Instead I waited till
afternoon when I joined a group to enjoy some close up magic
introduced by the convention organiser, Martin Duffy. Anthony
Owen was first to perform with his signature Oil and Water
effect plus several others. John Lovick certainly knew his
way around a pack of cards as did Andi Gladwin who was charming
and clever and finished with a brand new concept which got
a roar of approval from the audience. Then it was time to
swap rooms and go to the theatre for a talk about using
Facebook as a marketing tool. Tamar Kimmons knows everything
there is to know about this and was very professional in
her delivery. I learned a great deal from her. I didn't
go to Anthony Owen's lecture as I'd seen it before but I
did see Michael Murray's which was a very good session.
The
evening gala show was hosted by John Archer who was on form
as always. Morgan and West brought us more of their Victorian
magic and humour. John Lovick came into his own with a very
funny card trick involving a member of the audience. Guy
Barrett was back with some more illusions which were thrilling
and led us to the interval. Afterwards Stephanie performed
her amazing black art hula hoop act and the rest of that
second half was filled by the truly amazing Evasons! This
was a fantastic mind reading act, Tess Evason blindfolded
and standing alone on stage whilst her husband Jeff ran
through the audience holding up spectators' personal items
and asking Tess to identify them. She was accurate on every
occasion.
Sunday
morning brought one lecture and two Q & A sessions.
First was Morgan & West's lecture on character building;
this was a great insight to their work to become the Victorian
gentlemen we had seen in the gala shows. Then Anthony Owen
answered questions about being a producer for all the top
magic shows on TV - from Derren Brown onwards. Finally there
was a wonderful Q & A with the Evasons who talked openly
about their working relationship and what is needed to build
an act like theirs.
In
the afternoon there were two extra masterclasses but, at
£60.00 per time, I was glad to chill for the rest
of the day before heading home.

13. Fundraising Magician - 35th Annual Canadian Tour
--------------------------------------------
Message by John Kaplan (Canada)
Fundraising
Magician To Undertake 35th Annual Canadian Tour Magician
John Kaplan is about to take his magic and illusion show
on tour throughout western Canada for the 35th season, an
annual event that began in 1980.
Kaplan's
"AbracaDAZZLE!" show (http://abracadazzle.ca/)
starts off in Chilliwack, BC on Sat, April 12th with around
18 performance dates during a month-long tour from BC to
Manitoba that winds down May 30th with a performance in
his home base of Richmond.
Most
of these shows have been booked as fundraisers for various
school and community groups. During the 3+ decades that
Kaplan's Fundraising Magic program (http://www.fundraisingmagic.com/)
has been turning family fun into thousands of dollars for
organizations, he's performed thousands of shows in around
500 distinct Canadian communities from Vancouver Island
on the Pacific Ocean to Newfoundland on the Atlantic.
"We
not only provide great family-friendly entertainment, we
also provide a complete turn-key fundraising system that
allows groups to use these events as major money- makers
for their causes. It's so gratifying to know that, at the
end of the day, we've brought families together for a shared
experience of wonder and excitement as well as left tangible
results for groups within the community, whether it's raising
money for a new playground, sending kids on field trips,
purchasing computer and library supplies or any of a hundred
other causes our shows have supported over the years."
Kaplan
began his performing career growing up in Calgary, Alberta
under the mentorship of renowned magical publisher, inventor
and builder Micky Hades. It was a multi-week engagement
at Expo 86 that brought the performer to the west coast.
"Expo brought me here, and the gal I married kept me
here!" quips Kaplan.
John will be doing a fall tour as well, with his Halloween-themed
production "Stage Fright: The THRILL-usion Show"
that he performs annually during the month of "Shock-tober".

14. Luminato 2014: Transgressive Magic
--------------------------------------------
Message by Julie Eng (Canada)
Magicana
is pleased to announce our fifth year as part of the Luminato
Festival with our program, Transgressive Magic featuring
the world premiere of Card Table Artifice (and opening the
show, Rob Zabrecky's turn on the dark!) and the Canadian
premiere of Bullet Catch.
What
exactly does "transgressive magic" mean? Allow
Artistic Director, David Ben explain:
"Transgressive
Magic is magic that violates a law, command or moral code.
Card Table Artifice and Bullet Catch do just that.
See
video clip for details:
http://www.magicana.com/performances/luminato-2014
Card
Table Artifice - puts the con into concert, combining techniques
employed by professional card cheats with a sumptuous musical
score. It is a window into the world of advantage players,
and the machinations they employ when they place their livelihood,
and sometimes their life, into their own hands. (DATES:
June 13, 14 @8pm Janet Mallet Theatre, Toronto)
Bullet
Catch blurs the lines between conventional plays and magic
shows, addressing an act that violates both civil and moral
codes - the asking of a member of the audience to point
a gun and pull the trigger that sends a bullet towards a
performer quite confident he can defy death, all under the
guise of entertainment. (DATES: June 14 @2 & 8pm and
June 15 @2PM Berkeley Theatre, Upstairs, Toronto)
Both
productions challenge form and function, and place magic
and the audience outside the traditionalist's comfort zone
of top hats, bunny rabbits and family-friendly fare.
Both
shows need to be seen, but more importantly, heard. They
exist, as Luc Sante might say, to make our world seem a
little bigger."

17. Dani DaOrtiz Lecture New York
--------------------------------------------
Message by John Bukowski (US)
Dani
DaOrtiz is coming to town and is going to be giving his
exclusive New York City Lecture at Fantasma Magic on April
17th at 7:00pm. We shouldn't have to tell you how amazing
Dani is but just in case you do not know:
When
David Blaine was asked if he has ever been fooled by another
magician his response was: "Lookup Dani DaOrtiz he
is out of control."
David
Williamson said: "Dani is not only a product of the
"Spanish School" of card magic, with masters such
as Ascanio and Tamariz as his influences, he is also the
product of the ethereal mixture of biology, psychology,
stardust and unicorn tears that produces genius. To watch
him with a live audience is a lesson in what close up magic
ought to be, an intimate shared experience of miracles and
humanity.
