6. Remarkable Magic #346 - Nick Lewin
--------------------------------------------
Message by Nick Lewin (US)
Five
ways to improve your act.
My
next list of five items is one that is very near and dear
to my heart; it is my top five ways that a magician can
improve his show. I am going to make this a short and sharp
column because I have written individually about all the
items on this list before, and in some cases at quite great
length. However in my personal goal of condensing my thoughts
on magic into five groups of five it would be incorrect
of me not to state them again.
Focus.
The greatest way to improve any show is to spend some serious
time deciding what you want the audience to take away with
them after the show is done. Once you have analyzed your
conclusion then the easiest way to bring it to being is
to focus on the things that help and hinder your audience
in their reactions to your magic.
Focusing
what you say and do during your performance is the golden
key to achieving your greatest potential as an entertainer.
If you are fuzzy in your methods and application then it
is very unlikely that you will ever really achieve the goals
that you set yourself. I know that classically 'the three
golden rules' of being a magician are 'practice, practice
and practice, but I truly believe the three golden rules
to being an effective and entertaining magician are 'focus,
focus, focus.'
Visibility.
It is vital for a magician to make his magic as visible
as possible to the audience. We often spend hours in front
of a mirror practicing a routine/move and end up worrying
more about what we are seeing and not nearly enough about
ways that we can help our audience get a better visual grasp
of what is going on. Sometimes this can be as simple as
adjusting the height at which we hold a prop or the angle
that we present our effects to the viewers. The simplest
guideline is that if they can't see it then they won't like
it.
Editing.
It is almost impossible to edit your performance too tightly.
It is very easy to fall in love with of words and actions
without every fully realizing that this has happened. If
you can achieve something with less words or actions then
the overall effect is probably going to be much simpler
and easier for an audience to grasp. This in turn will strengthen
the impact of what you do and enhance the enjoyment of the
audience.
The
old saying amongst gardeners is to prune a rose bush as
if it belonged to your worst enemy. Be ruthless and cut
it way back and the roses will flower all the more spectacularly
next season--a fine metaphor for cutting back on any redundancy
in your show.
Simplicity.
The very best way to achieve any result in a magic show
is to search for the simplest method that can achieve the
strongest method. Always distance yourself from what you
personally feel about a trick and try and focus on what
the audience is going to see and feel. I am certainly not
suggesting that you dumb a trick down just to make it easier
to perform, just have an ethic of simplicity that prevents
you from the cardinal sin of over complication.
If
there is a less complicated way to achieve any given effect
then there is probably a lot to be said for taking that
route to your destination. At the very least there is probably
less chance of it going wrong (enemy number one!) and more
available time and attention to spend on your presentation.
Entertainment.
As magicians we obviously love magic and everything that
it entails - otherwise we wouldn't devote our lives to it.
It is always worth remembering that there are a great many
people who are not quite as excited about being fooled.
There
are people who are not particularly fond of comedians, however
a great many more people like to laugh than be fooled. Our
job is to tie up the magic in a nice little entertainment
package that is of maximum enjoyment to the largest amount
of people. Our goal should never be the trick but rather
the way that trick affects the audience.

7. Festivals - Working with Illusions - #337 - By Kyle Peron

Yes you can perform illusions at festivals. However, it
really is not necessary to do so. Do not feel that you cannot
work the festival market if you do not have the best and
latest Origami or thin sawing. Festivals just want their
audiences to have fun and for you to give them a reason
to stay at the festival. You can certainly provide that
to them with or without illusions.
By an "illusion" I am specifically referring to
any larger style prop in which a person is the center of
the magic. The magic happens to the person. This can be
a transposition, levitation, suspension etc. Illusions I
am talking about would be things like sub trunk, Missmade
lady, sword basket, chair suspension etc. Those are what
I refer to as illusions.
I do offer illusions as one of my day packages and I have
done them before. I must admit that I often times do not
even have to do them at all and can still have a wonderful
show that really makes them cheer, smile and laugh. The
illusions can bring in more potential income for the day
and so I keep this as an option for the festivals should
that meet their needs. If you offer illusions, make sure
your price covers the expense of the extra set up involved
in presenting them, carrying and also traveling with them.
You also have to factor in the cost of the assistant.
If you decide to present illusions in your festival show,
there are a few things you will want to take into consideration
before deciding on which ones to perform or purchase for
this market. Make sure that your illusions:
- can be done surrounded
- can be performed in any kind of lighting
- can pack down flat and are easily moved on and off elevated
stages
- do not require a "pre-load" that the audience
does not see.
Let me go into a bit of detail on each of these mentioned
above to give you more information as to why these are so
important to working the festival market.
Surrounded: In many cases you never know just what staging
you will have to work on when you are doing a festival.
I have worked on stages ranging from full stages with lighting
to setting up my own small tent to performing in the street
surrounded. You also cannot control exactly where people
will be seated or standing during your illusion performance.
Because of these situations you will find yourself in, you
never will have the perfect angles to do illusions that
rely on this.
This is why every illusion I perform at festivals is an
illusion that can be performed totally surrounded. Because
of this, I am not worried about where I have to perform
the illusion as I know I will be fine and the illusion will
be performed without problem.
Lighting: Almost every festival I have ever performed for
was outdoors. Because of this, your lighting is always changing
based upon where the sun is during the day. Keep this in
mind for illusions that work on black art principles will
not work well in the outdoor environments. It is best to
leave these illusions behind for a better opportunity. Use
illusions that do not rely heavily on proper lighting and
you will be much better off.
Packs Flat: The easier it is for you to carry, set-up and
transport your illusions, the better off it will be for
you and the festival. I try to always keep and build my
festival illusions to pack as flat as possible. This allows
me to keep my transportation vehicles to a minimum without
having the extra cost for truck rentals etc.
You must also keep in mind that festivals are outdoors with
a lot going on during the course of the day. There are a
lot of people moving about and so you will have to place
your storage and packing cases back in your vehicle or plan
with the festival crew a place for you to store them for
the day. If they are flat and less bulky, you can store
them back in your own vehicle and cause less problems for
the festival to deal with.
You never want to keep your illusions or packing boxes out
in the open during or between shows. If you are using your
cases as part of your on stage set up, then this can be
an exception for you. This may be common sense, but some
performers feel that the festival will watch them for you.
This is not the case as the festival crews are usually much
too busy moving around and solving problems that occur throughout
the day. I usually try to get a booth spot (a designated
vender area) near to the stage so that the illusions can
be moved under my booth tent between shows so they are out
of the way and I can keep an eye on things without causing
traffic problems for the festival.
Pre-Load: By pre-load, you will want to try and stay away
from illusions that require the assistant to be loaded into
the illusion ahead of time before the show starts. Because
you never know where you will be performing or where people
will be standing, pre-loading can be difficult to set up
and arrange so that no on sees this taking place.
If you have an opening illusion like a Blammo production,
you can probably get away with it but make sure to talk
about staging with the festival prior to you getting there
so something can be arranged. In most cases you might be
able to move your vehicle behind the stage and use that
to temporary block the angles for the pre-load. Or they
might be able to block off an area for you. Just keep this
in mind if you have an illusion that requires this before
your show start time.
I am happy to announce that my newest book, "FESTIVAL
MAGIC", is finished and is NOW available at http://www.kpmagicproducts.com/Festival_Magic.html

11. Celebrating Bob Neale
--------------------------------------------
Message by Larry Hass, Publisher of Theory and Art of Magic
Press
It
is my pleasure to announce that my dear friend Bob Neale
was awarded a Special Fellowship from the Academy of Magical
Arts at its 46th Award Show this past Sunday, April 13.
The
framed certificate says (in part) that this Special Fellowship
is awarded to Bob "in celebration of a creative output
that is too wonderfully complex to fit into a single category.
He has devised new amazements with topology, language, mathematics,
and sleight of hand. But, like tricky origami, a simple
flex transforms him into an amusing and provocative author,
and then, that rare entity: a philosopher of magic."
This
is a wonderful, much-deserved recognition for one of our
great creators and philosophers of magic. It was my deep
pleasure to be in Los Angeles with Bob and Gail Neale to
celebrate this award, which was presented to him by his
friend Eugene Burger.
Theory
and Art of Magic Press is the home of Bob Neale's most recent
publications, including the first installment of his great
Trilogy of Magic titled: The Magic of Celebrating Illusion.

13. David Stone's 'The Experience' Lecture - Australia
--------------------------------------------
Message by Garry Cohen (Australia)
David
Stone's 'The Experience' Lecture - Australia
Key Words:
- New tricks
- Extremely visual effects
- Misdirection
- Hilarious lecture
The new lecture is about general close up magic. It's both
funny and very dynamic lecture. David Stone's new lecture
will provide exclusively new strong magic tricks with cards,
coins, and varied objects: Floating deck, visual signed
torn and restored card, impossible card stabbed, business
cards and credit cards routines, an amazing and easy to
do 4 aces production right after spectators shuffled the
cards, sharpie color changing ... even a routine with a
condom!
Over
20 effects and new routines tested on a real audience.
NOTE:
Except on demand prior the lecture, the tricks and routines
are brand new at 90%. If members of the clubs would like
to see "live" some of his classic tricks, they
have to specify it BEFORE the start of the lecture, so that
David will add them where it fits the best for the show:
This new lecture is built on as a real show, and behind
the "casual", informal style of it, it is created
to enhance the understanding of every concept and principle
David wants to share.
The
last 3 years, David studied acting at the Actor's Studio
in Paris (The Studio Pygmalion) and played different roles
as an actor on movies in France. He will share his experience
in the emotional field and acting process to give hints
on how to improve character and personality as a magician
in performances along with tips on how to improve the strength
of a performance in people's mind.
David
will also talk and explain how he uses misdirection and
off beat timing in his shows with concrete examples.
As
usual, the lecture will be hilarious, with dozens of new
gags you will be able to use for your own shows.
The
tricks are very varied! It will be full of ideas, concepts
and routines along with cards and coins sleights, misdirection
routines, new shoes apparitions, advice for the pro workers.
Many routines from David's last trick, the best-seller TOOL
(over 25.600 copies sold in 18 months!) will also be explained.
In the lecture, there are over 14 routines using it showed
and explained!
