2. An a-May-zing Month!
--------------------------------------------
Message by Stan Allen, Editor of MAGIC Magazine

I try to keep these teasers for the latest issue of MAGIC Magazine as short as possible. But this month there's just too much to talk about.

May 2014 marks the fortieth anniversary of the opening of The Magic Show on Broadway, the day that changed magic! We're celebrating the occasion with the largest story ever run in this magazine. We pull the curtain back and take a look at the wizards behind what was once billed as "Broadway's first and only magic musical comedy hit" - The Magic Show.

With this May issue, we launch our brand new MAGIC Magazine Digital Network. You can now experience MAGIC on your computer, tablet, and smart phone. And it comes free with your print subscription, or for as little as $3 per month for digital only.

Here's just some of the bonus material currently available:

Doug Henning, In His Words
When David Charvet conducted the very last interview with Doug Henning, he videoed their conversation. Here is the first release, a 25-minute excerpt of Doug talking about the Broadway show that made him a star.

The Magic Show
In 1980, Doug Henning returned to the role he created on Broadway, doing it one last time to preserve it on film. Here is the seven-minute opening number of the movie version of The Magic Show, featuring the Dancing Handkerchiefs and Mis-Made Lady, from the DVD released by producer David Koyle.

Let's Talk… Hecklers
This new series of subject-driven videos features performers talking about performing. First up, advice on hecklers from Justin Flom, Mac King, Chipper Lowell, Armando Lucero, and Fielding West.

Healing of Magic
At the 2013 MAGIC Live, Kevin Spencer touched the hearts of attendees with his "Healing of Magic" presentation. The story of this amazing program appears in the November 2013 issue of MAGIC Magazine, but now watch the entire presentation. Warning: tissues not included.

Connect the Dots
For a mime, Tina Lenert sure has a lot to say. Her presentation at MAGIC Live last year was on how she developed her iconic Mop Man act, followed by a performance of said act - followed by a spontaneous standing ovation.

Marketplace
Product reviews are a very important part of any magazine. The problem is the amount of time it takes to get products reviewed and onto the pages of the magazine. Now you can get an advance look at what reviews are coming up, as well as search for reviews we've already run.

Plus video tutorials from Chad Long, Gregory Wilson, Karl Hein, and Steve Valentine.

It's all in the May 2014 MAGIC Magazine experience… plus a lot more!

4. Magic On The Menu And On The Air
--------------------------------------------
Message by Scott Wells, A.I.M.C. with Silver Star

For eleven years, Jim Sisti published The Magic Menu, the seminal publication for restaurant and bar magicians. It contained great articles, tips and tricks from all the leading close-up workers of the day including Michael Ammar, Doc Eason, Michael Close, Jay Sankey, and over 100 more top performers.

Jim sat down to record an interview on the history of The Magic Menu plus talk about some of the ideas it contained that are just as relevant and commercial today as they were 20 years ago. You can listen and enjoy this podcast on The Magic Word at http://TheMagicWordPodcast.com/ or you can subscribe and download the file from iTunes. You can also download the free app for The Magic Word at http://app.cat/themagicword/ where you can always be kept up to date with the latest news.

While I was at the recent F.F.F.F. Convention, I recorded a couple interesting chats that will be appearing over the next few weeks. Stay tuned and please help spread "The Word"!

5. Amazing Johnathan Prepares To Take Final Bows In Toledo
--------------------------------------------
Article forwarded on by William Bowers (US)

Toledo Free Press
Written by Jeff McGinnis

The Amazing Johnathan was performing in front of a crowd full of fans in San Diego about two months ago when he knew it was time to call it quits.

He'd planned for this moment for a while now. The famous comedy magician was diagnosed back in 2007 with a serious heart condition, cardiomyopathy. It means the heart muscle, for whatever reason, is beginning to deteriorate, leading to heart failure. At the time, the situation looked grim. Johnathan, who'd been a regular act in Las Vegas for years, made plans for retirement. But then, after losing weight and getting on blood thinners, everything seemed OK. He decided to cancel the end of his career.

Now, more than six years later, he was once more preparing to bow out of the spotlight, but on his terms - this year-long nationwide tour would be his farewell before he would quit performing for good. But he'd already learned the hard way that with this condition, even the best laid plans of mice, men and magicians are built on a foundation of quicksand. And in San Diego, it all came crashing back.

"Everything starting shutting down," Johnathan said in an interview with Toledo Free Press. "My heart's not allowing enough oxygen to be pumped into my legs and my arms. So halfway through the show, my hands started cramping up, and my legs started freezing up on me. And I pretty much made the decision then to cut this one-year tour short to only about three months."

Johnathan - last name Szeles - will perform in Toledo at Laffs, Inc. from May 1-3. Then he'll head to Los Angeles for a gig in Hollywood at the Magic Castle. And then … that's it. He'll retire to Las Vegas and work on maintaining his health as long as possible.

"It's supposedly supposed to deteriorate more and more. In fact, I'm getting ready to go right now to the doctor's to see if the medication that they gave me [is working]. And that's my last resort. Because if that's not working, they told me I probably have about a year. So, that's not what you want to hear."

Johnathan's voice spoke of his mortality - which he gleefully pretended to imperil on a nightly basis for much of his adult life - in matter-of-fact terms. This is happening, and that's that. "They were wrong last time about it. They said that it was going to deteriorate, and it didn't. For six years, I was fine. And now, it's just starting up again. So we'll see what happens."

In some ways, one gets the impression that the saddest part of everything for Johnathan is not that his health may be failing, or that he must give up his livelihood. No, the real tragedy is that he has to give up his act right when it's getting so good.

For 30 years he has performed his wild brand of comedy magic - part purposefully bad tricks, part old-fashioned geek show, part prop comedy, part genuinely great illusions - and just now he's reaching a point where he feels like he's perfecting it.

"The show is actually better than it's ever been. Before we announced that I was retiring, we started getting standing ovations, which was always sporadic throughout my career.
Everybody loves the show, but to get a standing ovation is not an easy thing," Johnathan said. "And I'm like, 'Oh, great. Now that I'm finally getting standing ovations, I'm sick and I can't go out and enjoy that."

He's also found a connection to a whole new generation of fans, thanks to appearances on fellow magician Criss Angel's series "Mindfreak." The shows opened the door to younger fans who weren't around when he first made a name on the national stage 25 years ago through appearances on "Late Night with David Letterman" and FOX's "Comic Strip Live."
"Comedy Central is a good gauge for that. Because they called me after 10 years - after I thought I'd never hear from them again - they called me out of the blue after 10 years of not calling me and said, 'Hey, you want to do an hour special?' I'm like, wow. I can't believe it. I thought it was a joke."

Despite his condition, Johnathan is doing everything he can to make this truncated final tour as epic as it can be. He has plans to record the entire run of his final week at the Magic Castle for possible release - he even hinted that the Toledo stops may be recorded, as well. And don't even think about asking if he has any regrets.

"The good news is that even if I did go tomorrow, I've had such a great career. I've been so blessed for 30 years. A lot of the people I started doing comedy with are either working regular jobs, or out of the business or dead," Johnathan said. "I've been on the top for at least 25 of those 30 years, I've headlined."

It's remarkable - Amazing, one might say - how many lives a performer can touch during their career. Even if said performer swallowed razor blades or took swigs from a bottle of Windex while he was onstage.

"It's been tough to announce the farewell tour and tell people it's a health issue - I've had a huge outpouring of love from these people. You don't really think about the effect you've had on their lives until they come up to you and tell you, 'I had cancer and going through my treatment, you made me laugh during that time."

7. Remarkable Magic #349 - Nick Lewin

Message by Nick Lewin (US)

Paul Romhany in England.

I want to use this column to give a shout out to my friends back in the United Kingdom, you have a very special lecture coming your way. My old friend and colleague Paul Romhany is going to be giving a limited lecture tour in England and lovers of strong commercial magic should definitely not miss it.

Paul will be familiar to many of you as the editor of the groundbreaking Internet magic gem 'Vanish Magazine' which has become an Internet sensation since he founded it a little over two years ago. Averaging over 100,000 downloads of each issue it has quickly revolutionized the magic publishing industry with its high quality articles and visually exciting presentation. I am proud to have been a contributor to Vanish from its very first issue.

A professional entertainer of some note, Romhany has been performing for over twenty five years as a full time magical entertainer and won many accolades and awards along the way. Paul has appeared in over 100 countries with his Gold Medal Award winning Charlie Chaplin act and in 2012 won the coveted 'Top Variety Artist in New Zealand' award. He was also a recipient of the 'Robert Houdin Award.' He is recognized as one of the busiest and hardest working magicians in the business.

Others of you out there will be familiar with Romhany from the steady stream of highly commercial and audience tested routines that he has released over the years. His original routines, books and videos are a wonderful contribution to the magic world. Some items such as Paul's 'Dream Prediction,' 'Linking Hearts' and 'Extreme Snowstorm truly deserve to be listed as contemporary masterpieces. All of his routines are created and perfected in the forge of performance and not just pipedreams; his creations are practical and STRONG.

All these years of performing have given Romhany a unique perspective of performing in a large variety of specialized areas including, cruise ships, variety shows, corporate events, television and trade shows. Those of you who know Paul understand that it is just not in his nature to walk away from an experience without learning something. It is lucky for us in the magic world that he has chosen to share his insights with us.

I saw Paul lecture last year in Vancouver at the '3 of Clubs Convention' and was very impressed with his ability to combine teaching great magic while simultaneously dispensing tips and techniques that he has acquired during his career. You get a wonderful insight into a brilliant and perceptive mind. If you don't walk away from his lecture a better magician than when you walked in---you just weren't paying attention!

Topics that are included during Romhany's lecture cover the magical gamut from close-up, to Mentalism, with plenty of good visual comedy magic included into the mix. Coupled with his magical stories and excerpts from his award winning 'Charlie Chaplin' act attendees are in for a treat as they enjoy this one of a kind learning experience.

Here is a list of Paul's English lecture dates.

11th May - Bristol Day of Magic
14th May - Zodiac Magical Society
15th May - Leamington & Warwick
16th May - Bradford Magic Circle
18th May - Newcastle
19th May - Manchester Circle of Magicians
20th May - Blackpool Magicians Club
21st May - Riviera Circle of Magicians
22nd May - Sussex Magic Circle

I wish I were able to be there particularly on the 22nd when Paul will be lecturing at my old magic club the Sussex Magic Circle! If you are able to attend one of these lectures then DO SO! You won't be disappointed.

8. Ethnic Diversity In Shows - #340 - By Kyle Peron
--------------------------------------------
Message by Kyle Peron (US)
magic4u02@aol.com
http://www.facebook.com/perondesign
http://www.kpmagicproducts.com

I was read a forum topic recently and the question came up in regards to how far we should go to accommodate the special needs of people. How far do we go with ethnic diversity or with handicaps and including that or not including that in our shows?

As a deaf person and deaf magician, I feel that I personally have to tell my audiences (in different ways) that I am deaf. Many comedians talk about this as breaking the ice. Audiences get uncomfortable because they do not know what to do and how to react. The moment I poke fun at myself and my deafness, they are totally ok with it because I AM OK with it. It allows them to forget about it and accept me and get on with having fun.

It also opens me up to being able to answer questions they may have after my shows. I encourage it because that is how people learn.

Now in regards to ethic and racial diversity within show performances, I think it should be done. However, this does not mean you have to hit the audience over the head with it.

I really feel that audiences can learn this and see this through your example. It is how you behave and how you act that sets the tone.

For example, if I am doing a routine using multiple helpers, I make sure to choose a good selection of ethnic diverse kids. Now it does not mean I pick a child acting bad simple because they are ethnic. Any child can be good or bad regardless of the color of their skin etc. It just means that I can choose diverse helpers without drawing attention to it.

If I am doing a routine using pictures, I do try to make it more ethnic diverse. Many tricks already come this way. I am a designer, so I often customize my tricks and routines and make them diverse for me.

Once again I am not drawing attention or focus to it. I am showing through simple example and the audiences will appreciate it.

You can draw focus to it if your show is all about anti-bullying or if it is on accepting everyone or equality. If you have a themed assembly show, then yes, you want to draw attention to it as that helps get the message across.

Kids want to feel included. They do indeed know what they look like and are very aware of who they are when they see a picture they can relate to. This is why I try to show equality and diversity in my shows.

I still feel that I do not have to beat them over the head with it. I can really show by doing. It's almost like treating with respect to gain respect. I show then diversity in simple ways and not draw attention to it. By doing this, they absolutely understand.

Equality is supposed to be something we do not something we have to think about. So in this light, I make diversity just a normal part of what I do and the audiences and adults appreciate it.

Now with having a double handicap myself, I can clearly state that we want what everyone wants and that is to simply be treated as everyone else. We want to be treated with equality and not be treated special. We want people to see as "normal". Just another person enjoying life and doing what we have to do. Certainly it may be harder for us, but we manage and we get by.

We appreciate folks who simply treat us fairly. I think people can go overboard trying to be TOO nice to us with handicaps or ethnic diversity. This is ok but it sends this single that we need help and that you must help us. In most cases, we really do not need help at all because we have taught ourselves how to adapt. We just want to have a good time.

I am happy to announce that my newest book, "FESTIVAL MAGIC", is finished and is NOW available at http://www.kpmagicproducts.com This 112pg book is filled with the most up to date information on how anyone can work and succeed in the festival and fair markets.

As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your thoughts. So if you have any thoughts on my articles or suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly at magic4u02@aol.com. I would love to hear from you.

The new lecture is about general close up magic. It's both funny and very dynamic lecture.

NOTA: Except on demand prior the lecture, the tricks and routines are brand new at 90%. If members of the clubs would like to see "live" some of his classic tricks, they have to specify it BEFORE the start of the lecture, so that David will add them where it fits the best for the show: This new lecture is built on as a real show, and behind the "casual", informal style of it, it is created to enhance the understanding of every concepts and principles David wants to share.

The last 3 years, David studied acting at the Actor's Studio in Paris (The Studio Pygmalion) and played different roles as an actor on movies in France. He will share his experience in the emotional field and acting process to give hints on how to improve character and personality as a magician in performances along with tips on how to improve the strength of a performance in people's mind.
