3. Johnny Depp to Play Houdini in 'Indiana Jones'- Esque Movie
--------------------------------------------
Article forwarded on by William Bowers

Screen Crush

For his next trick, Johnny Depp will play famed magician Harry Houdini. Continuing his tradition of wearing silly hats, the actor is in negotiations to star in 'The Secret Life of Houdini: The Making of America's First Superhero' (now that's a title), which is said to be in the vein of an 'Indiana Jones' story.

According to THR, Depp will play the legendary magician in the new film from Dean Parisot, the director of 'Red 2,' which features Houdini as not just a magician, but an investigator of the occult - so it's definitely territory with which Depp is familiar, given that he gets to wear a hat and spend time in the supernatural realm. Since he's been in several Tim Burton films, as well as movies like 'The Ninth Gate' and 'From Hell,' he's surely a pro by now.

The film is based on the book of the same name by William Kalush and Larry Sloman, though we wouldn't be surprised if the title gets shortened a bit for the big screen. Depp's last two films haven't been particularly successful, with both 'Transcendence' and 'The Lone Ranger' failing to impress critics. He's currently working on 'Black Mass,' in which he plays notorious criminal Whitey Bulger before he reprises the role of the Mad Hatter for 'Alice in Wonderland 2.' Also on the horizon: 'Pirates of the Caribbean 5'and 'Mortdecai.' No idea where this Houdini film will fit into his schedule, but maybe he can pull some free time out of one of his silly hats.

4. Phil Cass Wins Major Australian Show Business Award
--------------------------------------------
Message by Adam Mada (Australia)

The Australian 'MO' Awards acknowledge excellence in live performance and I am proud to advise that at the 38th Annual 'MO' Award Ceremonial Dinner held this week, our friend and colleague, Phil Cass, was named the Australian Specialty Act of the Year (for the 8th time!) ...and there was more to come... he was also awarded the biggie... the Gold 'MO' for the Australian Performer Of The Year, so named in the honour of Peter Allen. I believe Phil has created history by being the first magician to win this prestigious show business award.

Congratulations go to Phil Cass and Philippa for consistently being at the top of their field.

Well done. This is such an honour!

This is great news for Australian magic and magic in general.

Appreciate you spreading the word,

5. Leon Etienne Has Talent
--------------------------------------------
Message by Scott Wells, A.I.M.C. with Silver Star

One of the hit television shows in the U.S. is "America's Got Talent" (AGT) which kicked off this week on network TV. During season eight, Leon Etienne, an American illusionist, and Romy, finished in a respectable 13th place which is, I think, higher than any other magician on that program. Leon sat down with me to chat about his experience and gave some interesting, back stage insight to his preparations and performances.

You can hear it all on this week's podcast on The Magic Word at: http://TheMagicWordPodcast/scottwellsmagic/leon-etienne Of course you can listen online, download the MP3 file or get it through iTunes. Just check out the Podcast store.

Thanks for your donations. I sincerely appreciate your financial support via PayPal to ScottWellsMagic@gmail.com And of course, thanks for listening!

And here's just a sample of what it's all about this month:

Garrett Thomas
Our cover boy performs his Imagination Coins and teaches The Web Grip, Tilt Get Ready, and The Ring Thing.

L&L Audience
As an example of just how good an L&L Publishing audience can be, watch Bill Malone get 'em on their feet with his Standing Ovation Invisible Deck performance.

The Tempest
For most of April, Teller's vision of The Tempest appeared in Las Vegas. See a sampling of illusions presented in the show, as well as hear commentary from the magician who directed it.

Magic to Teenagers
Danny Orleans and communication expert Michael Brandvein analyze Danny's performance of Paper Balls Over the Head, including all performance techniques that he uses when presenting this routine to teenagers.

Let's Talk…
This is the second installment in our original series of subject-driven videos featuring performers talking about performing. This time it's "Let's Talk… Volunteers," with Kevin James, Mac King, Jonathan Levit, Chipper Lowell, Justin Flom, Fielding West, and Armando Lucero.

Wayne Dobson Talks
One of the most talked about presentations at the 2013 MAGIC Live was Wayne Dobson being interviewed by Jeff McBride. If you missed it, now's the time to see it. If you were there, you probably want to watch it again. It will make you laugh, and it will make you think!

It's all in the June 2014 MAGIC Magazine experience… plus a lot more!

7. Remarkable Magic #351 - Nick Lewin

Message by Nick Lewin (US)

A little about lectures, past and future.

Last week Susan and I had the great pleasure of attending the Martin Lewis magic lecture here in Austin, Texas. Although I have known Martin for nearly forty years I've never had the opportunity of hearing him lecture and it was well worth the wait. There is no area of magic on which Martin is not a brains trust of knowledge and I was both entertained and informed by his 90-minute lecture.

There were many highlights to the lecture with Martin's experience and creative approach illuminating all the material that was on display. Many of the items were from his Magikraft product line and Martin and his charming wife Susi did a lot of business at their product table. If you couldn't find an item to fit your style or taste during this lecture then you just weren't trying!

Martin was battling a sore throat and potential total loss of his voice but you would never have known by his witty and entertaining presence. A top-notch performer and magical thinker Lewis' lecture was truly a learning experience, even to a gnarled old road warrior like myself. If you have a chance to catch him lecturing in your neck of the woods then do yourself (and your audiences) a favor and make sure you attend--- you will not regret it.

The next best thing to attending a Martin Lewis lecture is taking a digital stroll through his website and ordering some of the audience tested routines that you will find there. You can access his online store at www.magikraft.com

I am delighted to say that I am going to be giving a rather unusual two-day teaching experience myself on June 9th and 10th in Cupertino, Northern California. The event is presented in association with the Society of American Magicians Assembly #94 and is rather interesting in the way that it has been constructed. The activities kick of with me giving a full-scale public performance on Monday the 9th at the De Anza 3 Auditorium beginning at 7.00pm. The show will be followed by a magicians only lecture scheduled to begin at 8.00pm in the same location.

I love the fact that attendees of the lecture will actually get to see a performance before I move into lecture mode. It is a wonderful way to allow the attendees to get an overview of the ideas that I will be presenting during the lecture. I think this is a very innovative and effective way to present the lecturer to his full potential. The price for the lecture is a mere $25 for non-members and $5 for SAM 94 members.

My lecture is a chance not only to teach some great magic but also to distill a great deal of performance information into an entertaining package. I do not lecture on a very frequent basis and am happy to say that it has proven extremely successful when I do. I give some priceless information during the lecture that was imparted to me by my three wonderful mentors Ken Brooke, Billy McComb and Maurice Fogel. I hope all my friends in the Northern California area will attend as I have some really great surprises in store.

On the evening of Tuesday June 10th I am presenting a hands-on Master Class between 5.00pm to 7.00pm and I will be going into considerable detail on some very specific effects for those present. Attendance is going to be limited to 8-12 people and I think this will prove to be a really enjoyable, highly productive, one of a kind, event. From 8.00pm -10.00pm that same evening I will be presenting a Performance Critique Workshop and working with attendees on material from the own repertoires. I am really looking forward to this segment and feel it will prove to be a wonderful learning experience for everyone participating.
Full information on this two day event are obtainable by contacting Phil Ackerly at ackerlymagic@gmail.com or by calling 408 246 8422. I certainly will be looking forward to meeting old friends and making new ones during this rather unique two-day event.

8. Diversity And Equality In Shows - #343 - By Kyle Peron
--------------------------------------------
Message by Kyle Peron (US)

http://www.facebook.com/perondesign

As a deaf person and deaf magician, I feel that I personally have to tell my audiences (in different ways) that I am deaf. Many comedians talk about this as breaking the ice. Audiences get uncomfortable because they do not know what to do and how to react. The moment I poke fun at myself and my deafness, they are totally OK with it because I AM OK with it. It allows them to forget about it and accept me and get on with having fun.

It also opens me up to being able to answer questions they may have after my shows. I encourage it because that is how people learn.

Now in regards to ethic and racial diversity within a show performances, I think it should be done. However, this does not mean you have to hit the audience over the head with it.

I really feel that audiences can learn this and see this through your example. It is how you behave and how you act that sets the tone.

For example, if I am doing a routine using multiple helpers, I make sure to choose a good selection of ethnic diverse kids. Now it does not mean I pick a child acting bad simple because they are ethnic. Any child can be good or bad regardless of the color of their skin etc. It just means that I can choose diverse helpers without drawing attention to it.

If I am doing a routine using pictures, I do try to make it more ethnic diverse. Many tricks already come this way. I am a designer, so I often customize my tricks and routines and make them diverse for me.

Once again I am drawing attention or focus to it. I am showing through simple example and the audiences will appreciate it.

You can draw focus to it if your show is all about anti-bullying or if it is on accepting everyone or equality. If you have a themed assembly show, then yes, you want to draw attention to it as that helps get the message across.

I believe in empowerment. I empower myself every time I openly tell an audience that I am deaf and they end up being so cool about it. It eases their minds and makes them relax. If I do not, they question things and feel tense. It makes an audience uneasy because they are not sure how to react. So by doing this, I tell them that I am OK with it so you can be too let's move on and have fun. It always works.

I would rather empower and educate than hide.

Kids want to feel included. They do indeed know what they look like and are very aware of who they are when they see a picture they can relate to. This is why I try to show equality and diversity in my shows.

I still feel that I do not have to beat them over the head with it. I can really show by doing. It's almost like treat with respect to gain respect. I show then diversity in simple ways and not draw attention to it.

Equality is supposed to be something we do not have to think about. So in this light, I make diversity just a normal part of what I do and the audiences and adults appreciate it.

Now with having a double handicap myself, I can clearly state that we want what everyone wants and that is too simple be treated as everyone else. We want to be treated with equality and not be treated special. We want people to see us as "normal". Just another person on this life enjoying it and doing what we have to do. Certainly it may be harder for us, but we manage and we get by.

We appreciate folks who simply treat us fairly. I think people can go overboard trying to be TOO nice to us with a handicap or ethnic diversity. This is OK but it sends this single that we need help and that you must help us. In most cases, we really do not need help at all because we have taught ourselves how to adapt. We just want to have a good time.

I am happy to announce that my newest book, "FESTIVAL MAGIC", is finished and is NOW available at http://www.kpmagicproducts.com This 112pg book is filled with the most up to date information on how anyone can work and succeed in the festival and fair markets.

As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your thoughts. So if you have any thoughts on my articles or suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly at magic4u02@aol.com. I would love to hear from you.

--------------------------------------------
Message by Joyce Basch, "Ms.gician"

Monday Night Magic, in the Village part of New York City, is a fabulous addition to the entertainment in the "Big Apple."

Harrison Greenbaum is a top-notch Master of Ceremonies, keeping the audience laughing and responding with each word and each magic effect. The show included four Magicians and a Juggler. Michael Chaut, the closing act, was a Magician par excellence! His unusual Egg Bag routine, his book prediction, and his engaging patter kept the audience alert, alive, attentive....... and laughing. During intermission, Close Up Magic is presented. After the show, it was a treat to join the performers and other visiting Magicians at a nearby restaurant. Of course, we shared Magic effects!

14. Bev Bergeron On The Road
--------------------------------------------
Message by Bev Bergeron (US)

We just when through a whirlwind of a weekend at the Double Tree Hotel/Convention Center.

The Florida Magic Convention was honoring me for my years of performing and my creation of my clown character, Rebo. I created this character for the first videotaped TV show in 1959 and the next year began 5 years of weekly network performing first at CBS-TV and then ABC-TV.

After about an hour of interviewing by Dan Stapleton, I set at a makeup table, told stories of my early days and put on my clown makeup. After my wife, Alouise, assisted me into my wardrobe, the music started from our old TV show "The Magic Land of Allakazam" and I performed an act that I created in 1962. After several crazy clown gags Rebo blows up a round balloon and he starts to "fly" about the stage, while playing with the balloon it burst. When the balloon burst Rebo begins to cry and the music builds with "Send In The Clowns" - blackout. Finish and so is Rebo and this act. The only way I will do it again is for $25,00000000000. and the price may be higher by tomorrow.

Three hours later I was on the stage again in the banquet room with my people face performing a comedy magic act and finishing with another old gone act - my pantomime cigarette act.

I'm happy to say that I received a standing ovation for each of these two acts. I could not have pulled off these acts if it were not for my Wife, Alouise, children and their kids. One drove all the way from Norfolk (he is in the Navy) just to help out. My old makeup was thrown away and Jim Green and his helper, Robert (Bob) supplied me with new - anyone need clown makeup?

For those who have not gone through some form of torture today and wish to have some, they can go on FaceBook and someway or other view pictures of my Rebo act. You can start by bringing up >Bev "Rebo" Bergeron<on Facebook. That is all I know - I have been shown scores of pictures. If you are really sick, you can watch a video made by Carmel, my daughter. It is in two parts. Go to Facebook and type in Carmel Bohlen.

16. Alan Shaxon's 'Confabulation Deluxe'
--------------------------------------------
Message by Paul Stone (US)

Good News .. Alan Shaxon's 'Confabulation Deluxe', one of the most commercial and impressive mindreading and mentalism effects in magic, is finally available again, although in limited supply. We have been waiting to get this item back in stock for a few months. These wallets are made in the same superb high quality leather as the original Ken Brooke Collectors Range, which we believe is unmatched.

The bad news is that after honoring existing customers' orders, we have just 25 of these outstanding wallets left to sell. 'Confabulation' is perfect for the working performer, and is featured by many of the world's top professionals. It guarantees you 5-8 minutes of solid, strong magical entertainment with a knockout finish.

'Confabulation' can easily be customised for corporate shows and personalised for private bookings. There's a quick set up and it fits into your jacket pocket. It is also the ideal trick for any close-up workers who are asked to perform a stand-up effect for a larger audience.

We've kept the same price as for the last 5 years, $175, plus $25 for the Confabulation DVD featuring the late Past President of the Magic Circle, Alan Shaxon, performing his signature trick in two different shows, and explaining his set up and handling. This DVD is only available to purchasers of 'Confabulation Deluxe'. S&H is $10 within the USA.

'Confabulation Deluxe' is a genuine reputation maker! If you are interested, contact us at qualityevents@aol.com quickly. These 25 will go fast, and it will be several weeks before we will be receiving any more.
