Great to be back home! Michele and I really enjoyed the IBM/SAM joint convention in St Louis, Missouri. We caught up with a number of old friends and made plenty of new ones. Two magical highlights for us were getting an invite from Johnny Gaughan to view his workshop and showroom; receiving an invite from David Copperfield to visit his magnificent museum. Two special occasions we will never forget.

Delighted to report that we presented Kyle Peron with an Honorary Membership Award for his weekly articles on marketing to Magic New Zealand over the last six years.

3. Jonathan Pendragon's Felony's Dismissed In Court
--------------------------------------------
Message by Jonathan Pendragon (US)

On June 19th, Maurice S Newman petitioned the court on behaviour of Jonathan Pendragon. Jonathan's felonies were knocked down to misdemeanors and those were dismissed. The court considered Doctors reports and the reports of the probation officer in charge as well as personal letters from Jonathan's wife West. In her remarks, the judge granted the petition and wished other could turn their lives around to the degree I had.

I can't own a gun, nor do I want, I can vote and must explain the status to federal, state and local authorities when asked. Beyond that it's tabula rosa, a clean slate.

I worked many hard years to achieve this, now I will get on with inventing new magic.

With Respect
Jonathan Pendragon

4. The Simon Lovell Farewell Medical Fund
--------------------------------------------
Article by Randy Wakeman forwarded on by Mel Kientz (US)

Most involved in the magic community are quite familiar with Simon Lovell, through his several books, DVD's, radio and television appearances, his countless magic convention appearances on both sides of the Atlantic, and his long-running one-man off-Broadway show "Strange & Unusual Hobbies."

Back in October, 2013, Simon suffered a severe multiple break to his right femur, requiring surgical implantation of titanium rods and some 2-1/2 months of hospital care. Simon has not been able to function (or work) much since that time, and recently has been admitted to hospitals five times over the last few weeks. Presently, he is still hospitalized for a variety of quite serious conditions. Simon is not healthy physically, mentally, or spiritually.

Simon's eighty-three years young father, Tony Lovell, who lives in the U.K., has been working to bring Simon home to live with him for recovery, for an extended time. Tony Lovell lives alone near Chelmsford, in the East of England. Tony Lovell and his daughter have been working towards setting up proper continuing medical care for Simon, and Tony Lovell is further trying to absorb all the literal baggage and costs . . . paying for Simon's return, storage and shipping of his personal effects, and so forth. There is essentially nothing left for Simon in the United States, sadly, in terms of work, tangible assets, or even a suitable place to live.

Father Tony and his daughter Sue (who is a career matron nurse) are going to have their hands full, to say the least. Retired Constable Tony Lovell is going to have to put his career law enforcement skills to work once again, this time working to restore his only son's health. Simon is not capable of much function at present and is clearly incapable of managing his own affairs.

Every single nickel of the net proceeds from this little fundraiser will go strictly to Simon's father, Tony Lovell, who will use them properly and wisely toward Simon's recovery. Tony is the type of person that would not ask for help personally, but Simon has a long road ahead. This isn't a quick process measurable in days, more like many months to a couple of years.

This road does not include alcohol or fun to be sure, and Simon will be accompanying his father to church, and will be experiencing a healthy lifestyle and continuous medical treatment for the first time in years, if he has indeed ever had it. Simon looks to be headed to the U.K. shortly, perhaps as soon as next week. At this extremely serious point, having his father look after him is Simon's best chance at recovery, perhaps his only chance.

Your expressions of love, support, generosity and good-will be a huge help and greatly appreciated by the Lovell Family. Tony Lovell has promised everyone regular updates as to Simon's progress.

Think-A-Drink Revisited.

The mini break in the publishing schedule of Magic New Zealand coupled with a three-week tour in Europe has allowed me to catch up with some reading and research. I would like to draw your attention to some things that have particularly caught my attention. It seems I always get nice responses from my readers when I cast my somewhat jaundiced eyes over the latest releases to the magic community.

There are a handful of tricks that are guaranteed to be audience favorites due to their very nature. These effects become classics and are generally performed by a great many performers. Sometimes you get a classic trick that is not often seen performed live by magicians and its impact is better classified in the 'legendary' category. Think-A- Drink is one such effect. I have only seen the effect performed once when Earl Nelson, presented his version of Alan Wakeling's Bar Act. It totally knocked me out.

There are more versions and names for this effect than you can shake a martini at, but I will continue to refer to it in this brief article as Think-A-Drink which was the title given to it by the man who was so identified with it that it became part of his name---Charles "Think-A-Drink Hoffman. While Hoffman didn't invent the trick he certainly perfected it to the degree that he definitively came to 'own' it in a performing sense. However I personally rather like the title that French magician Ryss gave the effect, 'Le Barman de Satan!"

Billy McComb always used to say that when a magician was looking for a signature piece of magic to perform he would do well to focus on tricks that are complicated to master and rather painstaking to perform and you would find a lot fewer performers presenting the effect in public. Think-A-Drink certainly comes into this category. If you are looking for a classic piece of magic that will stick in an audience's mind then this trick comes high on any objective list you could make, just ask Steve Cohen how he feels about it. Even better Think-A-Drink has a plotline that can be summed up in a sentence. "The magician poured out all kinds of drinks from a single container---and we even got to drink them!" The best tricks are the ones that can be summed up this easily.

An excellent source book of information was just published that gathers together most of the important aspects of this routine. The book is called 'Alan Bursky Presents Think-A-Drink,' and it contains eleven previously published routines, some fascinating articles and personal memoirs concerning this particular effect. The book has been meticulously researched and it does a wonderful job of making its information relevant and useful to any contemporary magician.

On a very practical level the final chapter detailing the various resources needed to perform the mechanics of the trick is probably worth the price of the book if you decide to add the trick to your repertoire. If you purchase this book and read it intelligently you can add the Think-A-Drink to your show, which is quite something to say about a trick that has made as many reputations as this one. I am equally sure there are many magical historians and hobbyists who will be excited to read the book just to add to their knowledge about this somewhat forgotten classic.

The book is published in an electronic edition contained on a digital disc that can be read in a very effective PDF format on your computer. The design and graphics in the book are the work of co-publisher Steve Mitchell and coupled with the classic magic artwork they make the book a delightful read. I thoroughly enjoyed it and wanted to share my opinion with you. I hope there are more volumes in this series to be released.

The Think-A-Drink book can be purchased for $33 plus shipping/handling. For full details go to http://thinkadrink.weebly.com/

7. Business Card Vs Calling Card - #345 - By Kyle Peron
--------------------------------------------
Message by Kyle Peron (US)
magic4u02@aol.com
http://www.facebook.com/perondesign
http://www.kpmagicproducts.com

There are really two approaches to take with a business card. There is a branded calling card approach, and there is also a "business" card approach. I have done both for myself, as well as designed both for magic clients of mine. Both are different and do different things for you. The choice is really up to the individual and what he or she wants to get out of the card.

So, one thing you have to determine is if you want your card to be a true "calling card" or more "business" card. There is a difference between the two, and they both can work for you. It really is a matter of personal preference and what you want your card to do for you.

A calling card is mainly a continuation of your brand message and brand identity as carried across all forms of your marketing. It may have your logo identity on it, as well as your various contact information, website, phone number, etc.

A business style card is one that will have this information on it but will actually work as a way to generate business for you. It becomes more of a marketing vehicle and might include using the back of the card in some sort of way to give the person an incentive to take action to call you, go to your website, etc.

Also, business cards do more than convey the information that's printed on the card. A card that's ugly, dirty, printed on perforated paper, or full of corrections screams loud and clear that you're an amateur. No matter how many wonderful services you offer, if your card brands you as unprofessional, you lose business. A clean, creative, professionally printed, and visually attractive card on the other hand, conveys a positive first impression that lingers long after your initial meeting.

Still, a savvy business person knows that adding your unique marketing-oriented text to a business card, in addition to contact information, pays off. One strategy is to add text that gives your unique, specific customer benefits.

For example:

1) Easy to PAY "Credit Cards Accepted"
2) Easy to get AHOLD of "Requests handled within 24hrs."
3) Easy to get ADVICE or INFO "Use our simple Information form."
4) "Present or mention this card for a free magic trick."
5) "Receive your first show at 25% off by requesting a promo kit."
6) "Log onto kyleandkellymagic.com for current discount coupons!"
7) "Free upgrade to our deluxe package by mentioning the number on this card."
8) The back of the card can be a useful calendar.
9) Survey, redeemable for a free gift - could direct them to a web page survey, where they fill it out and get a free gift or discount.
10) Punch card for frequent clients - acts as a referral rewards system.
11) A fun optical illusion, magic trick, or question where they can be directed to your website for more like it or for the answers.
12) A calendar of your upcoming public performances.
13) The card could be a magnet to be used and seen on the fridge by the prospect.
14) Could have a listing of most common measurement conversion chart - gives them a reason to hold onto it for their use.
15) A list of your top 5 tips for a successful event.

Keep in mind that there is nothing wrong with having your card be just a "calling card". If you have other marketing materials that have a call to action that you use, then a calling card may not be a bad way to go as it is a continuation of your brand identity. However, you could have your business card doing double duty by not only listing your contact information, but by having an effective call to action as well.

No matter which direction you go in, always remember that your business card is a direct representation of what you do, what you are about, and the services you provide. Do not settle for second best or for a card that looks "cheap". A professional and high-quality card will say a lot about your services long before they even begin to read it. Make your card work for you.

It is hard this day and age to get folks to understand that the first impression you often ever make on a prospect is in the materials you send out to them. If this is the case, why wouldn't you want these materials to be designed in the best way possible?

Too many folks have PCs and desktop publishing software. It is too easy to create artwork and get them done up that everyone thinks they can do it. What they forget to realize is that graphic design and communications through graphical means is a learned skill, and one that takes a long time to understand and to do well.

I take pride in the fact that I spent 5 years in art school getting a double degree in graphic design and illustration. Those hard 5 years were spent studying, learning, and applying design ideas and principles to give me the knowledge I need to design print material that communicates the message of my clients the best that it can. Design is not about making something look pretty. There is so much more to it than that. This is why I take pride in the designs I create for my clients. It is a process where I really find out what makes the person, service, or business unique, and then create graphics that communicate this message clearly to his or her marketplace.

If you have any design needs from logos to business cards to banners, posters etc., please check out and "LIKE" my design fan page at http://www.facebook.com/perondesign. I have many samples there of what I am talking about above and other tips you may enjoy. I would love to hear from you at magic4u02@aol.com. Thanks.

Asi Wind Special Guest at Sorcerers Safari Magic Camp this Summer

Asi Wind travels all the way from New York City to the Sorcerers Safari Summer Magic Camp in Ontario, Canada. (Asi comes for the kids, but stays for the magic; "Love it," say Sorcerers Safari staffers.)

Toronto, Ontario. - June 27th, 2014 EST - Amidst rampant magic forum speculation, Sorcerers Safari Summer Magic Camp announced it is bringing in a world renowned mentalist as the special guest at Magic Camp this summer.

With several best selling DVDs & downloads, a one-man show 'Concert of the Mind' under his belt, and a ton of great unpublished ideas - Asi Wind has lots to offer the campers. Asi Wind is famous for his exceptional performances, he's also known for consulting on David Blaine's latest special, which has received international acclaim. Now imagine what it would be like to spend a camp session with him?!

The inspiration for asking Asi Wind to spend time at magic camp, recalled Mike Segal, owner of Sorcerers Safari, "He simply loves magic and would be a perfect fit for camp and the kids," Segal said. "And there is no better way to spend time immersed in the art of magic than with one of your heroes. Who doesn't love Asi Wind? He's awesome!"

The idea of having celebrity magic stars as special guests at camp is always one of the hot debates at the annual executive staff meetings. (Sorcerers Safari Summer Magic Camp chooses only the best of the best to come up as special guest.) After unanimously agreeing Asi Wind was a perfect fit, we asked and he gladly accepted.

"Asi Wind is going to have a great time up here, and so are all the campers and staff. Imagine all of the experiences he can recount about performing his one man show in NYC, hanging out on set with David Blaine, and the rest of all the legendary things he's done," said Sorcerers Safari veteran staffer, Ben Train. "This is going to be our seventeenth year in operation, and I can't remember a time when everyone was so excited about a special guest like Asi Wind."

Train adds, "I met Asi Wind early in his career and it's now nice to see him blossom into a powerful, artistic force. Having him at camp is a win-win for everyone. We welcome him to our camp family with open arms. Having Asi is like having a long-lost brother come up for the week. I love it!"

According to Mike Segal, Sorcerers Safari is growing exponentially with a high rate of return campers and return staff. With luck, Asi Wind will love camp so much, he too, will return repeatedly.

Are you ages 8-20 or know someone who is and would benefit from a week at Sorcerers Safari?

12. Paul Daniels BRAVURA
--------------------------------------------
Reviewed by Quentin Reynolds

"Paul Daniels is the greatest British magician of the last quarter of the 20th Century." So said John Fisher (TV producer) at the Magic Circle Centenary in 2005.

Many years earlier, at a British Ring convention, as I was heading back to my hotel there was a large group of magicians in the foyer and Ali Bongo was walking up and down in a tizzy saying, "It's too much, he's giving away too much." Wondering what he was talking about, I joined the group, the centre of which was Paul Daniels talking about magic and answering any questions put to him in great detail and with very frank views. No wonder Ali was upset.

If Ali were still with us he would probably spontaneously combust at what is on this DVD set.

It is very rare for a working pro to give away his full act. Many have published the explanation of their tricks but rarely the real secrets, the nitty gritty, the minute details that have come from years of performing experience and make a huge difference to the presentation.

Paul's early professional years were the workingmen's clubs in the north of England. If you didn't get them in the first thirty seconds, you were dead in the water. After achieving great success in the clubs Paul went on to do a number of summer seasons, theatre shows in the West End (the first in 1981 ran for nearly 18 months), fifteen seasons of The Paul Daniels TV show on BBC1 prime time Saturday night viewing. Did I mention the touring show, the thousands of private shows and being a quiz show host? Enough! He's more than paid his dues.

So what's in store with BRAVURA?

Disc One: Fortunately for us and future generations the performance of Paul's act on the first DVD is not flawless. Were it so it would be much more difficult to learn from. Here, Paul is performing for an audience whose first language is not English, so little hiccups arise and you can see how he handles these keeps the everything flowing. That alone is a masterclass. The show runs for fifty minutes.

Disc Two: Paul goes into great detail explaining all these routines and the psychology behind them and though I have seen him many times and knew 'basically' how the tricks were done I was swept away by the psychology and attention to detail. I did not know that an extra ball was used in the Chop Cup routine and you will know what I mean when you watch the explanation. I did not realise the Electric Chairs was being set up at least fifteen minutes before it was presented. The explanations which run for two hours were still somewhat of a revelation.

Technically there is nothing more difficult than a very basic bottom palm or a false transfer. Yet there is so much thought and planning behind every little detail to ensure smooth running of the show and maximum entertainment value without sacrificing the magical effect.

While Paul refers to the Electric Chairs as his signature trick, it's only fair to point out that all the routines in his act could be signature tricks as the presentations are so closely associated with him.

Now that these routines have been taught and explained in great detail there is nothing to stop you or anyone else going out and doing them but if you do you will be missing the whole point of this four DVD set. It is not mentioned anywhere on the DVDs or the promotional material but there is a theme that permeates right through over and over again. I'll come back to that point in a minute.

Disc Three covers a number of other stand-up routines that I've seen Paul use over the years, particularly in his full evening theatre shows. His six-card repeat is a masterclass in turning a classic card trick into a stage-filling piece of entertainment. Sadly, his brilliant handling of the 'Block Thru Head' is not included.

You'll also discover his work on the Classic Force, including the timing and misdirection for the 'Behind the Back Force'. In the impromptu section you will find the full presentation with gags for 'The Vanishing Saucer' which is worth the price of admission. Not to mention a whole range of tips and handlings for tricks you probably already know but don't perform. Yet!

Disc Four has sections on the business of magic and again is crammed with practical, real world advice. He gives a technique used by Judy Garland to generate energy before going on stage. She must have passed it on to her daughter Liza Minelli because at the 1988 Sinatra/Davis Jr/Minelli concert in Landsdowne Road rugby ground Liza burst onto the stage as though she had been plugged in and that energy flowed right across the pitch up to the back of the stadium. Truly awesome.

Paul has covered a fair portion of this advice in his Masterclasses, of which I have attended a few. Yet there is still quite a bit I hadn't heard before and again, this DVD alone is worth far more than the cost of the set.

Each DVD contains an interview with Paul, all filled with stories and sound advice. The lovely Debbie McGee (Paul's wife and assistant) is interviewed on Disc One. Debbie is a trained dancer and her perspective is refreshing, especially on people who put tricks in their show without proper physical rehearsal. It shows.

Luis de Matos has done his usual excellent job with the production and packaging. He's also the interviewer and has obviously done his homework (with the help, I suspect, of David Britland) with the detailed questions he asks both Paul and Debbie.

The boxed set comes with a code which after you contact the EMC, they give you a link to download some software and get access to some further material. I tried this with a previous boxed set from EMC and haven't been able to get any of them to play. I found the process complicated, frustrating and unnecessary. There must be easier ways.

These DVDs will bear many repeated viewings and each time you will learn something new. There is no padding here, no fluff, just solid, practical routines and advice from, as John Fisher said, "…the greatest British magician of the last quarter of the 20th Century."

I mentioned earlier that there is a theme that runs through this DVD set even though it is not mentioned or specifically referred to.

BRAVURA is not about Paul Daniels or his act or the other tricks or magic in general.

It is about The Art of Presenting Yourself To An Audience.

This DVD set is about YOU and how YOU can best present YOURSELF and YOUR magic to YOUR audience.

It is an extraordinarily generous gift from a man at the top of his profession to us and to future generations and in my opinion the most valuable DVD set yet released in magic.

13. Trip to Dean Dill's Barber Shop
--------------------------------------------
Message by Scott Wells, A.I.M.C. with Silver Star

In this week's third installment of "My Week at the Castle", I got my hair cut by magician and hair stylist, Dean Dill, in Glendale, California. I turned on the microphone and let it run as the discussions flowed from Alan Bursky and Pete Biro. Pretend that you are sitting in the corner listening to all of this along with all the sights, sounds and smells of the barber shop.

Back at the Magic Castle, I chatted with "Close-Up Magician of the Year" Bill Goodwin who is also the librarian for the Castle. Finishing up the evening, we have a long talk (and drink) with the creator of the Magic Castle, Milt Larsen.

See the photos, read the blog and listen to the podcast on The Magic Word at: http://themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/part-3-my-week-at-the-castle-2014 You can listen online, download the MP3 file or have it sent direct to your portable device through many of the podcatchers by subscribing to The Magic Word Podcast. Of course, it is available in the iTunes podcast store and through the free AppCat app. All the podcasts and more are available and searchable through The Magic Word at: http://TheMagicWordPodcast.com

Thanks for listening.

14. My Week At The Magic Castle Part One
--------------------------------------------
Message by Scott Wells, A.I.M.C. with Silver Star

There is so much magic taking place in and around The Magic Castle that I cannot contain it all in one podcast. I tried last year and ended up with over three hours of a single podcast. I already have more than that and I still have a few days left before my week is up. So, I am breaking up the podcasts into more manageable bits over the coming month.

This first offering includes a chat with Sue Dion, the resident manager of the Nirvana Apartments where Castle performers are housed. This is an interesting historical building complete with its own spirits. Up next is Joan Lawton who is the widow of Don Lawton, one of the former hosts at the Castle. She is also the publisher of the Don Lawton Autograph Book. And finally we go out to eat with Rafael Benatar, from Spain, who worked the close-up room last week but is featured in the late night slot in the Parlour this week.

You can hear it all at: http://themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/my-week-at-the-castle-part-1 plus view some photos from Hollywood, too.

On a related note, please accept my apologies for giving you a bad link last week for the Leon Etienne podcast. The correct direct link is: http://themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/leon-etienne

But if you subscribe to The Magic Word, then you never missed a thing. IF you haven't yet subscribed, then you can do it through the website or on iTunes.

15. My Week At The Magic Castle Part Two
--------------------------------------------
Message by Scott Wells, A.I.M.C. with Silver Star

This week on the Magic Word, we continue our podcast from Los Angeles, California, while I was working in the Close-Up Gallery at The Magic Castle. I traveled the short distance over to Studio City, CA where I visited one of the real brick-and-mortar magic shops that sells only magic and not costumes or adult novelties: The Magic Apple. There I chatted with proprietor, Brent Geris, about the importance of reading instructions and the status of brick-and-mortars.

While there, Jason Latimer stopped by and we had a chance to talk about his new projects that include the new TV series, "Wizard Wars" plus some other exciting projects at the university and museums. Before I left, Jonathan Levit came in and I grabbed him for a little while. We talked about working in the film industry as it relates to magic and consulting.

You can hear Part Two of "My Week at the Castle" on The Magic Word at: http://TheMagicWordPodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/part-2-my-week-at-the-castle

There you can see photos and videos plus read the blog and get time stamps of when the guests come on and in which order. You can listen online or download the MP3 or of course, get it from iTunes. You can subscribe and the RSS feed will come straight to your phone, tablet or computer.

In case you missed last week's Part One of "My Week at the Castle", then you can go directly to: http://themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/my-week-at-the-castle-part-1

More to come from the Magic Castle in upcoming weeks plus I will be reporting daily updates from the I.B.M./S.A.M. Combined Convention in St. Louis, Missouri. Stay tuned…and thanks for listening and supporting The Magic Word.

18. Great News About Magic Landmark
--------------------------------------------
Message by Neil Tobin

Great news regarding the original home of Schulien's!
Alderman Smith reports via her newsletter of May 30, 2014-
Willow-Halsted Redevelopment
Proposal Withdrawn

As reported in earlier newsletter and on our website, a development team proposed to tear down the orange rated building at 1800 N. Halsted and another old building to redevelop the site as condos and storefronts. After a community meeting, the strong neighborhood consensus was to preserve the 1800 N. Halsted, which has a rich history. In fact, Preservation Illinois designated the corner of Willow and Halsted as an historic gateway to Lincoln Park and one of its "Ten Most Endangered Historic Places" for 2014.

As a result of strong community opposition to the plans and these preservation concerns, the developer has withdrawn the proposal. I remain committed to bringing the best development possible to our neighborhood after full and transparent community review. I am confident that a better proposal can be brought to our community.

Thanks to magicians everywhere for contacting Alderman Smith with your messages of support for preserving this magical landmark, and to David Parr for initially bringing this issue to my attention.

A new plan isn't on the table just yet (nor is there a bronze plaque on the building marking Matt Schulien's legacy). So we still have a way to go. But we've sidestepped the immediate prospect of a wrecking ball at 1800 N. Halsted, and for that we can all be thankful.

Congratulations!

Best,
Neil
