5. The Magic Word - Creating The Paranormal Experience
--------------------------------------------
Message by Scott Wells, M.I.M.C. with Gold Star
As
we approach Halloween, "the season of the witch"
when things go bump in the night, there is no better time
to entertain your audiences with something different
a
séance. This week on The Magic Word Podcast, Jamie
Salinas and I presented a one hour lecture to our local
I.B.M. Scott Hollingsworth Ring #39. The topic: How to Put
Together Your Own Séance. This gives the basics on
how to produce and perform a séance. Even if you
are not interested in putting on a full blown séance,
you might want to add a few bizarre things to your repertoire
this Halloween season.
This
mini-lecture does not necessarily teach any tricks but focuses
more on the do's and don'ts of what you should do when you
produce a show. We discuss how to present yourself (i.e.
Psychic vs. Magician vs. Ghost Hunter), high tech vs. low
tech, the element of surprise, and much more. We put together
a $10.00 set of lecture notes which you can order for immediate
download through the shop on the website. This will be the
basis of an expanded book that will give much more detail
on this subject plus include many more effects to incorporate
into your bizarre entertainment.
You
can find this week's #190 podcast on The Magic Word at:
http://themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/paranormal-lecture
where you can listen online or download the MP3 file. You
can also see a promo video we recorded last week to encourage
people to visit our séance. Also on the website,
there are photos plus links to some of the places where
we have purchased our effects used in the séance.
And of course you can download the podcast through iTunes.
You
can visit the Shop to order your copy of our lecture notes,
"Creating the Paranormal Experience" at: http://themagicwordpodcast.com/shop/

6. Escaping The Hollywood Heat By Going To Las Vegas
--------------------------------------------
Message by Milt Larsen (US)
Believe
it or not a couple of days ago it was hotter in Hollywood
than it was in Las Vegas! Luckily Dale Hindman got his new
air conditioner in his MCI office in time to return to a
freezing office. Arlene and I were here for Paul Stone's
tribute to 98-year-old master magician Tihany.
Franz
was obviously moved by the showing of love and respect in
magic and circus variety. The show was a blockbuster. The
stars of the variety world resulted in at least a dozen
standing ovations including a two-minute one for Tihany
himself.
The
show was also a tribute to the late Joanie Spina who passed
away last month. It was a benefit for Joanie's favorite
charity the "Heaven Can Wait Animal Society."
I
won't list the acts but I can only say all thirteen of them
were so professional and talented that the show zipped by
in just a little over two hours. A great credit for keeping
the show moving was due to host and emcee Ben Stone. Ben
is well known in the UK. He is a dynamic singer and entertainer.
A highlight was the appearance of Lance Burton whose Miser's
Dream with a kid is still a classic of modern magic. Great
seeing one of the world's most sensational jugglers Kris
Remo and old pals Kevin James and Stan Allen, but every
act was a winner, tops in their field and a great tribute
to Tihany and Spina.
For
those of you who may not know the name Tihany that's because
his fabulous magic circus never played North America. His
show is a major attraction in South America and is currently
playing in Brazil. It plays in a tent but it is a tent that
you have never imagined: Upholstered theatre seating, carpet
on the aisles, crystal chandeliers, spectacular dancing
water in the orchestra pit, and a stage that would rival
any showroom in Las Vegas. The show features spectacular
illusions and production numbers and a line of beautiful
showgirl dancers. All that plus top variety acts and comedians.
When
I had the Variety Arts Center in downtown Los Angeles there
was a full undeveloped block that would have been great
for the Tihany Show. The city was excited about the idea.
(This was in the 80's before the success of Cirque du Solie
tent shows.) Then we got into the complications of the health
department, police and fire departments, Building and Safety
etc.) Sad but the show never happened.
We're
all looking forward to another Tihany Tribute, especially
the one for his centennial.
Incidentally
plans are jelling for the weekend of magic celebration in
the fall of 2016 to honor the 60th Anniversary of the IT'S
MAGIC! Show. The all-star show will be held at the Wilshire
Ebell Theatre in Los Angeles where the shows started and
played for the next 20 years before moving to our own Variety
Arts Theater in 1977. Since 2000 Terry Hill joined me as
producer and our annual shows play some of the West Coast's
finest performing arts centers. Our next shows will be in
the spring of 2015. Stay tuned.

8. Remarkable Magic #363 - Nick Lewin
--------------------------------------------
Message by Nick Lewin (US)
The
care and feeding of your act.
I
thought it might be interesting to talk a little bit about
a topic that most of us spend a great deal of our time talking
about and learning to do, without ever thinking too closely
about our relationship with. That ever present and forever
changing aspect of our being is our "act."
Here
are some of the definitions of the word act from the dictionary.
act |akt|
Verb ( no obj. )
1 take action; do something
2 ( with adverbial ) behave in the way specified: they followed
the man who was seen acting suspiciously | he acts as if
he owned the place.
3 take effect; have a particular effect: bacteria act on
proteins and sugar.
5 perform a fictional role in a play, movie, or television
production: she acted in her first professional role at
the age of six.
Noun
1 ( in sing. ) a pretense: she was putting on an act and
laughing a lot.
2 a main division of a play, ballet, or opera.
o a set performance: her one-woman poetry act.
o a performing group: an act called the Apple Blossom Sisters.
That
is a lot of descriptive word power for a tiny three-letter
word. Especially when in the magic world we normally just
mean a list of tricks that we perform in a particular order,
most of the time. I think those definitions above are rather
interesting and are worth quietly meditating on for a moment
or two.
It
is the role of any novice performer to just throw a few
tricks together and hope that they function as an act. Once
the act has been performed enough times they begin to make
some changes and improve the impact of what is being presented.
It is important to experiment until something is achieved
that is really effective and coherent. When this begins
to occur it is vital not to freeze up and mistake the process
of success for the result of success.
It
is very easy to get mentally stuck just as the act really
begins to click. The actions and words we employ "onstage"
begin to coalesce and form a cohesive identity and we perceive
of an 'act' as being complete and finished, instead of a
permanent transition towards something different and better.
It is human nature to be satisfied when what we perform
achieves a smooth life of its own, however it isn't the
place to stop, or slow down, if you want to achieve your
maximum potential as a performer.
We
have all had the experience of watching a magician who has
performed the same act for so long that the lack of variables
and risk have just sucked all the life out of his show.
He may not know it but we do. On the other hand it is usually
very exciting to watch a performer who is comfortable enough
in his own skin to spontaneously re-invent himself. It doesn't
matter if his malleability leaves a rough edge or two; it
is only by exposing, exploring and experimenting in this
way that one can turn a rote action into a work of art.
It
is a good thing to occasionally remind ourselves that our
"acts" are not something separate from us, which
we perform at specific times. Our "act" is an
aspect of our being that extends a very specific window
into who we are ----at that very moment we are performing
it. Every show we must search for a way to do something
a little different and better. It is selling oneself short
to have some "frozen" checklist of what we are
going to do and fail to realize that our audiences do not
have that same goal in their minds. They enjoy being along
for the ride and not just arriving at the destination.
I
always like to generalize the difference between a comedian
and a variety act by pointing out that just when a comic
gets a joke perfect---he drops it from the act. A variety
act gets something perfect---it stays in his act forever!
I think this is one of the factors in making comedy as vibrant
and vital as it is to audiences, while magic remains perennially
a more niche entertainment.
The
goal of evolution (whether in life or art) is not perfection
but to keep evolving. Perfection is a goal and can never
be reached or it ceases being a goal. I always think of
the wonderfully funny/sad moment in the seminal showbiz
movie "Mr. Saturday Night" when the old veteran
performer, played by Billy Crystal, after a lifetime of
performing says to his brother, "I never got the act
quite right
" None of us do.

9. Chair Suspension Illusion - Magical? #354 - Kyle Peron
--------------------------------------------
Message by Kyle Peron (US)
magic4u02@aol.com
http://www.facebook.com/perondesign
http://www.kpmagicproducts.com
I
have heard many times magicians talking about the Chair
suspension and ending their conversation with, "It's
just not that magical."
This IS magical and SHOULD be magical to an audience. =)
The problem is in the way people are doing it and more importantly
all the little things that are often times done wrong or
not done at all. If this is done correctly, this will get
reactions and this will fool and this will get applause.
I know because I do it all the time and it works.
Now
this is not meant (what I am about to say) as an ego thing.
It is to prove a point only.
I
was performing my chair suspension routine at a birthday
party outside and yes even with people at weird angles.
I have done this so many times that I have the ability to
handle all of that without issue. As I was performing the
illusion, the adults STOPPED dead in their tracks and started
watching. Every person there was focused on it.
At
the end of the routine we had people not just clapping but
standing up, clapping and going NUTS. This is no lie. After
the show this BIG biker looking guy comes up to me and says
the following "Dude great show and really awesome.
However, how the BLEEP did you do that chair thing? How
in the world did that just happen? That was CRAZY cool!".
No
lie. This happened and it happens a lot for me and my wife.
This guy was not joking and was genuine in his response
to me. He was not the only one.
My
point is this DOES work. Do not get frustrated with the
illusion because you think 1) it is obvious to a lay person
or 2) it presents poorly. Both are not true IF you take
the time to research, practice, ask questions and understand
how the illusion is supposed to be done and create a routine
that works the right way.
There
should also never be any safety issues or problems with
this. NONE. If you go through the safety measures and checks
that I list in my ebook and talk in detail, you will never
have an issue with it. It becomes a habit you just do every
show just like anything else in your show. And the best
part about it is it is not hard to do and learn.
Do
not expect to get this illusion and just put it in your
show the next day. You MUST do your homework, practice,
research and make sure you 1) know how to properly set it
up. 2) you know how to properly get a child on and off,
3) know how to perform it the right way and proper way,
4) have a good routine for the illusion and 4) practice
the illusion until you are comfortable with it.
I
hear so many times about movement or sag. When I perform
this illusion, there is NO sag and NO movement. None at
all. That is because of the handling of it. If you learn
once again how to handle the illusion properly and setting
a person on it in the proper position, there should be no
movement or sag. Also, you yourself have the power to control
that.
Proper
positioning of the helper is just one area where folks have
the most issues or problems with. Allow me to help a little
on this. The proper positioning should be that the helper's
shoulders are parallel to the back edge of the chair. Their
head should naturally be off the board and placed lightly
and gently down. This does not hurt the child or the helper.
It is a relaxed position. Not you may have to adjust this
ever so slightly depending if you have a person who is taller
than the shoulders get moved upward just a bit. Very easy
to do.
Now
a GOLDEN secret is how can you do this so it happens naturally
without you having to adjust the helper? Simple. The usage
of a small plastic step stool. It is placed usually in the
center and helps the helper to easily be placed gently on
the board first in a sitting position and then later in
a laying position. The placement of the stool will determine
where the help's bottom will end up on the board.
When
the person lays down, their bottom does not move as they
lay down from that spot they are seated at. IF you know
this, then it becomes easy to adjust the placement of that
stool to account for a helper of any size. I can visually
know where to place the stool so that the person is seated
on the board where I need them to be. Once they go into
the laying down position, it happens naturally and correctly
without me having to adjust anything.
Now
this does take practice and you need to do this a few times
to get the hang of it. However, once you do, it becomes
second nature and it saves you a lot of headache and grief.
It also makes the illusion flow smoother for you and for
the helper and audience.
Folks,
you do not have to fear this illusion. You do not have to
think it does not play well. This is a classic of magic
for a reason because it does work. You just have to be willing
to spend forth the effort to learn before doing.
If
I can be of any help to anyone, PLEASE let me know.
***
I hope this information has given you an idea of what can
be done with this illusion. If you would like additional
and detailed information on this illusion, please see my
ebook at: http://kpmagicproducts.com/Chairs.html
As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your
thoughts. So if you have any thoughts on my articles or
suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly

13. Motor City Close-Up Convention
--------------------------------------------
Message by John Luka (US)
The
Motor City Close-Up Convention will be here in less than
two months. With the help of The Wunderground Magic Shop
we made sure that the line-up for this year's event would
be AWESOME. We are featuring Shoot Ogawa, Tony Cabral, David
Gabbay, and Curtis Kam. You will have an opportunity to
interact with four of today's top close-up performers in
an intimate setting. Being a small convention you will get
the opportunity to see close-up magic Close Up. You will
see some terrific magic in the three scheduled close-up
shows plus a chance to see a great deal of close-up magic
being performed in casual situations. You will also get
a chance to meet the performers and get to attend four great
lectures.
All
events take place at the Best Western Woodhaven Inn (http://www.bestwestern.com/woodhaveninn)
located at 21700 West Road, Woodhaven, MI 48183. (Metro
Detroit Area) Phone (734) 676-8000 Call the hotel for room
reservations or hotel information. There is a special room
rate of $73 plus tax per diem for the convention. To qualify,
when you make your reservations request the Motor City Magic
rate.
The
workshop information and the schedule are now posted on
the website. It is very easy to register for the convention.
Simply click HERE and click on the "Add To Cart"
button. Registration is only $125.
We
have a lot of surprises planned for this year's event. This
is going to be a great opportunity to see a lot of good
magic. In addition to the formal shows, there will be informal
sessions going on. The new hotel is very session friendly.
Don't forget the party! Another opportunity to see more
magic.
Besides
our featured performers, we also have some very talented
guests who will be attending the convention. Garrett Thomas
and Kainoa Harbottle will be there. Eric Jones, Chris Capehart,
and Tom Gagnon will also be there. Register now so you can
look forward to having a great time and a fun filled weekend.
Stay tuned. You never know who else might be there.
Those
who have attended the convention in the past know that the
line-up of performers has always been outstanding. You can
view a list of past performers by clicking HERE. I am very
proud of that list. I am also very happy that performers
for this year's Motor City Close-Up Convention number among
the very best I have had.
The
dealers will include: Wunderground Magic, ABC Magic, Benz
Magic, Pattrick's Magical Surfaces, Kozmo Magic, Chris Capehart
Magic, Roy Kueppers Magic, Eric Jones Magic, BJW Jewelers,
and Gordon Miller Magic.
Mark
your calendars and plan on attending this year's event.
I look forward to seeing you there. -- John Luka
Three
Close-Up Shows, Four Lectures, Optional Workshop, Dealers,
Party, & a lot of good magic and fun.

14. Broken Wand - Jim Artle
--------------------------------------------
Message by Craig
I
lost a great friend yesterday, the world lost a treasure.
James was a great bar magician, given the passion to entertain
behind the bar from his mentor and friend Scotty York. But
James was so much more. Everything he did, he did with passion,
dedication, and love. A Broken Wand Ceremony will he held
at 7:30 PM, Saturday. Details are below. Farewell my friend,
I will see you later.
Earl
"Jim" Artle, age 63, of Highlands died Thursday,
September 18, 2014 at home in Highlands. Jim was born in
West Union, WV and grew up in Warren, OH he later lived
in Hoboken and then settled in Highlands. Jim was a Paramedic
for 43 years beginning in Warren and continuing in Hoboken
and Highlands. He was a lifetime member of the Hoboken Volunteer
Ambulance Corp.
During
this time of literally saving lives, he also wanted to share
more laughter. As a member of the International Brotherhood
of Magicians, and the Magic Castle Membership in Hollywood,
CA where he was also a performer, Jim intrigued thousands
with his close up hand work for over 30 years. He so loved
to entertain and fascinate that his sister Debbie recently
published his work in "A Fifth of Card Tricks -with
coin trick chasers".
He
was hired to entertain the street crowds surrounding Barnes
& Noble in NYC for the new Releases of the Harry Potter
Series; Jim performed his magic to delighted young Muggles.
In 1984, Jim found his way to Macy's where, as Senior Balloon
Technician, he was the proud caretaker of a great American
Tradition- The Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. He worked
the Parade for 33 years and started each by announcing his
signature line through his bullhorn, "Ladies and Gentlemen,
we have a Balloon". He is one of the original "Balloonatics"
to be taught by Goodyear Engineers.
He
retired in 2013. Jim truly lived life with love, dedication,
passion, joy, and constant laughter; always sharing his
knowledge with everyone. Jim's love of life will carry on
with those he mentored and befriended.
He
is the son of the late Joseph James and the late Dorotha
Lee (Robison) Artle. Jim leaves behind his great love, Sandy
Rafferty; daughters, Casey Artle-Christiernsson (Michael)
and Kaitlin Faler; brothers, Sam and Joe Artle; sisters,
Lana Artle, Debbie Wilson (Michael) and Bev Reyes (Joe);
grandchildren, Sarah and Caleb; and nieces and nephews,
and The Visitations will be held on Saturday, Sept. 20 from
4-7 pm at the John P. Condon Funeral Home in Leonardo with
the Funeral Services following at 7 also at the Funeral
Home.
Cremation
Services will be Private. In lieu of flowers, the family
would appreciate donations to Joan Dancy and PALS, P.O.
Box 8157, Red Bank NJ 07701.
The
organization is a local support group helping individuals
with ALS and tirelessly assisted Jim throughout his illness;
or please support your local Volunteer Ambulance Corp.
