4. Trip Plans to FISM in Rimini
--------------------------------------------
Message by Joan Caesar (Canada)

It is time to begin looking for flights to Italy. I booked my flights several weeks ago and found an extremely good deal from Toronto for $923.00 Canadian, which is less in USD. Bologna has the closest large airport although there's a small one in Rimini with connecting flights to Bologna and other Italian cities. These flights are not cheap, over $400 at last glance, although the price would most likely be less if combined with a flight to Bologna. However nothing can beat the price of a train.

A return trip from the central train stations of Bologna to Rimini is about $44 if booked at least a month in advance, and there are regular buses from the airport to the train station which cost 5 Euro - about $8. Make sure you have plenty of time to find the train and you're golden. North Americans have got to love the convenience of train travel in Europe It's so much better - and faster - than ours! If you fly into Rimini airport the cost of a taxi from the airport to the Palacongressi or Marina centro (hotel area) is approximately €18.

In the summer, the busiest time of year, it's best to purchase tickets in advance - particularly if the train requires a seat reservation. Purchasing in advance also means that you don't miss the train you want to catch due to a huge queue for tickets. You can buy a ticket from the Bologna airport to Rimini on-line before you leave home. Remember all tickets must be validated in the small yellow ticket machine before you board your train. There's no need to travel first class. Second class has excellent seats.

Americans might also look at different departing airports. If you're close to the Canadian border, the flight is half the price from Toronto or Montreal than from, for example Philadelphia, Syracuse. Also, www.Hotwire.com. has the same flights for about $200 less than Expedia.

On the other hand, you might consider flying to Florence or Rome for a few days, then taking the train to Bologna. The flight to either city, returning from Bologna to Toronto is virtually the same as a return flight to Bologna. A good deal in order to spend a couple of days in beautiful Florence or Rome!

6. The Magic Word Podcast - Steve Trash - Talking Trash
--------------------------------------------
Message by Scott Wells, M.I.M.C. with Gold Star

During a recent visit to Houston, Texas, Steve Trash stopped by for a delightful visit. As we chatted, I turned on my microphone to catch the memorable tidbits of advice and history he was laying on me. I knew I couldn't absorb it all at one time. Afterwards, I asked if he would allow me to share his recorded thoughts on The Magic Word Podcast.

He graciously agreed to let it out so all can benefit. It was one of those conversations that was really more of a mini-lecture where I only asked a few questions because he had so much to say. And Trash talked, too. My wife, Kathy, joined me on this podcast and in fact, is probably heard more than I am. She was interested in what Steve had to say and enjoyed every moment of it. I think you will, too.

You can read the blog, see some photos, listen online or download the MP3 file at: http://themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/steve-trash-2015 You can also download the podcast through the iTunes store. And now you can listen and download the podcast through Stitcher at: http://www.stitcher.com/s?fid=61194&refid=stpr and through FeedPress at: http://feedpress.me/themagicwordpodcast

Here is the latest footage of the documentary video Tim Drake is editing on my sixty year career in magic and show business. This one is the story of my Zaney Blaney Ladder Levitation. It is a bit longer story, a thirty minute video, but will hopefully be interesting to those who love levitations in magic, and appreciate when a new creation comes onto the magic scene. http://youtu.be/U6u0mI8s0tk

8. Remarkable Magic #381 - Nick Lewin
--------------------------------------------
Message by Nick Lewin (US)

A Magical time in Maui.

I recently wound up a two-week gig by spending a delightful day on the glorious island of Maui in Hawaii. I guess there may be better climates and more exotic locations scattered around the world but not many of them. I had a splendid time there but as always the time passed way too quickly during my visit in this paradise of an island.

Lahaina is home to one of the very coolest magic venues in the world---Warren & Annabelle's Magic Dinner Show. Situated at 900 Front Street, it is a very special location that houses one of the most popular magic shows on the scene. The brainchild of Warren Gibson this is a spectacularly well-constructed magic theatre that sells out two shows a night, six nights a week. It has been around for over 15 years and seems to go from strength to strength.

I have never actually had the chance to be among the 80 guests who make up the audience for the evening's entertainment, so how do I know how good it is? I have heard many raves from lay folk who have been entertained by Gibson and his ghostly pianist sidekick Annabelle. In fact Warren's name pops up frequently when sophisticated tourists name their favorite magicians. Along with Ray Anderson he is one of the finest 'below the general radar' ambassadors of magic performing today.

With a mix of showmanship, skill and southern charm Warren performs a two-hour magic show in his custom designed jewel box lounge and theatre combination. The set up reminds me of a nicely scaled down version of the Magic Castle or the old Magic Empire in Las Vegas. The intimacy of the setting is a very large part of the charm that seems to turn visitors into regulars. Good food and drinks do their part too. Even my fleeting daytime visit revealed a business that hums with the precision of a Swiss watch.

The Magic Show has been running since 1990 and Warren seems to have perfected his formula. Guests arrive and enter the deliciously elegant lounge area via Annabelle's secret chamber. Without giving away any secrets, their initial entry is fun and sets the mood for their arrival in the lounge/bar area where the ghostly Annabelle does her part in entertaining the crowd. After food and drink the guests are led into a perfectly equipped theatre that is perfectly designed for the combination of close-up and parlor magic that is the mainstay of the evening.

Gibson has an additional small repertory of guest magicians whom he features throughout the year. When I was in Maui John Shryock and Dana Daniels were performing in the showroom. With two such fine performers there to replace his signature performance Warren runs no risk of any of his audience leaving the evening with anything but glowing praise for the quality and caliber of the magic on display. The very talented Chris Blackmore is another frequent guest performer.

I had a delicious lunch with John Shryock and Dana Daniels before they were kind enough to give me a mini-tour of Warren & Annabelle's. We got to sit outside in the perfect climate and eat our meal discussing magic while looking at the blue water and luxury boats sailing past us on the horizon.

Daniels is another of those magical entertainers who makes a huge impact with every audience he performs for and does way more than his fair share in helping promote magic, both with his skills as a performer and his genuine like-ability as a human being. It was fun to be able to catch up with him during my visit, as our paths do not cross nearly often enough.

It was a delightful visit and I was excited to see a magic venue that rivaled any in the world. Now I just have to organize another nocturnal visit when I can enjoy the evening as a spectator and participate in the magical and culinary treats that are offered to the lucky guests attending the soiree. I have no doubt that it will be a night that will truly make me truly proud of being a magician.

Next I want to visit my old friend Paul Kozak, who has launched his own successful magical event in Kona. I congratulate both Paul and Warren on creating something new and fresh to entertain the public with quality magic. The fact that they have managed to do so in such exotic surroundings just adds to my respect for their talents and vision.

9. Chair Suspension - Why Perform It? - #352 - Kyle Peron

I always perform the chair suspension at every b-day party. I wanted a strong ending effect that can make the b-day child the star of the day and really have a great photo opportunity in the process. Now I perform this illusion at every b-day show I do and have my wife take a Polaroid pic of the child at the moment they are being suspended on the chair. It makes for a very powerful moment when I show the child the picture of them floating at the conclusion. The look on their face is priceless and really makes them feel good and makes the parents feel even better.

I know for me that even though my chair suspension cost me a bundle, it is the routine I have developed over time that really is what makes it personally priceless for our show. So much so that I probably would have easily paid double just to own it because of the reactions I get the fun and empowering moment it causes to the child.

I also charge more for this b-day package but I find out that folks do not have a problem with this because it is just such a powerful draw to them and a great way to end a perfect day for their child. Once again, for me, the chairs are not a problem or a burden to carry into a b-day show and really do not take up that much room. I have done it at most every type of b-day show and in different conditions and have never had a problem with it.

Do I ever wish there was an even better suspension to meet my show needs? You bet!!! Have I searched and researched to find it? Yes I have done that also. What I have found works best for me and my needs is the chair suspension. I know this may not be perfect for everyone, but you have to look at it yourself and find out if it meets your own needs.

For me I like it because it:
- Packs fairly small to fit in a car etc.
- Sets up very fast and breaks down in no time
- Is not very heavy to carry
- Gets a terrific reaction if and when performed properly
- Can be performed virtually surrounded with less angle problems is there something out there that can do the same thing better? Maybe there is, but I have not found it yet. I certainly will keep looking and am always open to other ideas. For now, the chairs have met all my show needs.

I paid my chair suspension off time and time again. It has just been such a great staple to any show I do. The fact that it packs down flat, sets up easily and can be done virtually surrounded is such a strong selling point to anyone. Sure it is an investment but it is an investment well made.
Yes, it does cost some money but consider it as an investment. Usually 2-3 paid b-day shows pays the illusion off. I find that very well worth the money.

11. A Visit To Europe And Especially To Germany
--------------------------------------------
Message by Wittus Witt

If you plan a visit to Europe and especially to Germany, I would like to draw your attention to the following.

Did you know that Hamburg is full of Magic?

In Hamburg the very first magic society was founded in 1899 by Carl Willmann.

In Hamburg the very first true magic periodical was published: Die Zauberwelt, published by Carl Willmann from January 1895 to December 1905.

Kalanag started his career at the Garisson Theatre in Hamburg, now known as the "Schauspielhaus".

In Hamburg you will still find one of the oldest vaudeville theatres in Europe: Hansa-Theatre. Many magicians have appeared here, like Okito, Houdini, Siegfried & Roy. Just recently we could admire the art of bubble magic by Tom Noddy.

In Hamburg you will find a very nice private magic theatre which is run by the Hamburg Magic Circle. They often introduce lectures and public shows.

In Hamburg you will find the world's only magic gallery which shows different exhibitions about the art of magic during each year.

This year's exhibitions will be:
* Dancing Canes: dedicated to Fredo Marvelli, Fredo Raxon and Punx (22 March - 31 May 2015) Opening speech with the son of Fredo Raxon

* Kassner and collegues: dedicated to posters of Adolph Friedländer (21 June - 31 August 2015) Opening speech with Dr. Jürgen Döring from the Museum of Arts & Crafts of Hamburg.

* The Floating Lady: dedicated to Pan Zero and Kalanag, Germany's great illusionists (13 September - 31 December 2015)

In Hamburg you may attend every Friday night my own private theatre "Magic Salon Hamburg" which opens at 21.00 h and offers 60 to 70 minutes of magic, combined with sparkling wine and canapé.

Also in Hamburg, this year there will be the 5th Hamburg Magic Nights from
September 18th - 20th starring: Wolfgang Moser from Vienna, Thomas Fraps from Munich and ventriloquist Andreas Roemer from Hamburg.

Finally in Hamburg Europe's largest selling and oldest magic magazine is published "Magische Welt", which has just entered volume 64. Main topics this year: Women in Magic by Elinor van Dommelen, wife of FISM Grand Prix winner Tonny van Dommelen.Magic for Children: A series of interviews with children's magicians.

So do not forget to stop by when coming to Germany. Hamburg is the most magical city - at least in the north of Germany.

More information can be found at www.zauber-pedia.de, the largest online-dictonary in the German language.

Just a reminder that the 2nd Annual Oceanside Magic Invitational convention is only 10 weeks away! Magicians of all levels, magic lovers, hobbyists, collectors, students of magic...all are invited. There's still time to register for this year's event, which takes place
literally "Oceanside" at the beautiful Red Jacket Beach Resort in South Yarmouth, MA, USA.

OMI is a friendly, welcoming weekend of magic and fellowship, featuring some of the brightest stars in the magic community. Following the 1st Annual OMI last April, this new convention was praised by virtually all of 2014's headliners and attendees, and word has been spreading. Jay Scott Berry proclaimed it "...quite simply one of the finest boutique conventions in the world."

SAM President Ice McDonald stated, "I had the best time at OMI. Markus and Angelique, the organizers, gave everyone who attended a wonderful experience. Go witness the Fun."

Craig Dickson of Wizard Craft Magic had this to say: "When I was SAM National President, I wrote a column entitled 'Straight from the Heart'. This testimonial certainly is. We have been to just about every convention in the world over the past 30+ years, and bigger is seldom better. What we seek is a place to meet new people, see some great magic, learn, share, laugh, meet up with old friends, relax, and be in a place we would like to go on a vacation, and is offered at a price a family can afford. This has it all and so much more. It is now in our top three, and I truly mean that. You can tell when things are done for the money, or done from the heart, with passion. OMI is one that is truly from the heart and by those with a true passion for magic. Do yourself a favor; make this a must attend, April 2015. Come home, and join the family. See you there...."

Past SAM President Bruce Kalver described OMI as "an intimate convention that is loaded with magic all the time. Something for everyone. One of my favorites this year!"

OMI 2015 features Lectures from:

Kozmo, Harry Allen, Losander, Ariann Black, Oscar Munoz, Andrew Pinard, Becky Blaney, and Kevin Heller, with a special presentation/discussion with Alan Wassilak, creator of the "Basil the Baffling and Chloe" cartoon in M-U-M.

There are also Stage and Cabaret Shows, all-you-can-eat buffet lunch on Friday and Saturday, an Auction, raffles, and more.

OMI's 2015 Dealers include:

Daytona Magic, Kozmo Magic/Reel Magic Magazine, Losander, Wizard Craft Magic, Diamond's Magic, Tailored Magic, Custom Magic Cards, and John Henry's World of Magic.

All activities (except for the Saturday show) are right at the Resort; the Saturday show is at the nearby Dennis-Yarmouth High School auditorium. This show is also open to the public-for those unable to make it to the whole convention, try to catch the show!

Visit www.oceansidemagic.com for Schedule, Performers/Shows, Dealers, and Registration info ($190 Magician, $135 Companion; daily rates also available). To reserve your room at the Resort, call 1-800-CAPE-COD and mention OMI for the special rate of $115 plus tax per night.

IBM President Shawn Farquhar also praised OMI after his appearance there: "I attend many conventions, and few really understand that the number one thing we want from the convention is community. We spend enough time alone in our rooms practicing and many spend plenty of time performing. It is rare to find a place where we can share and learn from each other in a comfortable and friendly environment. The Steelgraves really understand this fundamental need, and have created a special place in the world of magic."

It is indeed a special place! For all who missed it, here's a short glimpse of last year's OMI: http://youtu.be/7gtSjS2Epck

Don't miss this extraordinary event. Hope to see you on Cape Cod in April.
