3. FISM - Florence
--------------------------------------------
Message by Message by Joan Caesar (Canada)

Florence is one of my favorite Italian cities, and considered by many to be an open-air museum.

I love to travel, and a new FISM venue every three years gives me the excuse to explore places I wouldn't otherwise see. Although I've been to Italy numerous times, I'm heading back to Florence before FISM. George and I spent our 18th anniversary there and loved it.
I strongly recommend that you fly to Florence and take the train from there to Rimini. If you are interested in architecture, for example, you don't need to visit any museums: many of the palaces and squares are masterpieces of their own.

Many of the great palaces and piazzas in Florence are spectacular. The main squares often display statues by Giambologna or Michelangelo while Ponte Vecchio, Old Bridge, is a treasure.

Florence's museums, palaces, and churches house some of the greatest artistic treasures in the world.

Cross the Ponte Vecchio is Giardino di Boboli, a huge park on a hillside in the middle of Florence behind the Pitti Palace. These gardens were created by the Medici family in the 16th century. The beautiful and varied Italianesque garden is home to a large number of statues and fountains. The gardens have passed through several stages of enlargement and restructuring work. They were enlarged in the 17th century to their present extent and have come to form an outdoor museum of garden sculpture that includes Roman antiquities as well as later works. Within it, eight different galleries feature art, costumes, jewelry, and the apartments. It opens daily at 8:15

Spanning the Arno River, the Ponte Vecchio is one of Florence's oldest and most photographed bridges. Noted for its three segmented arches, the bridge was first built by the Etruscans and later rebuilt in the 14th century. The bridge's most striking feature is the line of high-end jewelry shops flanking along each of its edges. Night time presents stunning views when the lighting from the bridge is reflected upon the water.

Dominating the panoramic view of Florence is the Santa Maria del Fiore, the domed cathedral that is often called the Duomo. Known today as the world's largest masonry dome, this majestic cathedral features 600 years' worth of stunning architecture and art works. From its beautiful Gothic facade of red, green and white marble to its elaborate interior of stained-glass windows, mosaics, frescoes and bronze statues, the Duomo complex also includes the impressive structures of the Baptistery and Giotto's bell tower. A climb to the top gives you an incredible view of Florence and outlying valley.

Hotel Palazzuolo is $106/night with breakfast and close to old city.

4. FISM - Mike Caveney
--------------------------------------------
Message by Joan Caesar (Canada)

Mike is, by his own admission, a FISM junkie. Ever since his first FISM in 1976 he has been hooked.

In 1976 Mike was working for Johnson Products making gimmicked coins. When he decided to have a dealer booth at FISM he made a variety of tricks using foreign coins. They had never seen this kind of thing in Europe and his business did very well. He didn't know how good the convention would be beforehand but Vienna turned out to be one of the greatest FISMs ever. I was booked to perform at the next one in Brussels and it continued from there. He has worked at 5 FISMs.

His wife, Tina Lenert has attended 8 FISM conventions and performed at all of them with 5 different acts.

2015 in Rimini will be his 14th straight. He says, "Think of all the conventions you have ever attended as being high school track meets and then think of FISM as the Olympic Games. There is nothing else like it." Over the decades he has made many FISM friends. These are people whom he normally only sees once every three years at FISM. It is always a great reunion.
He is also addicted to the competition. He spends hours in the theater, afraid to leave for even a few minutes because he might miss the best act of the week. He has been to good FISMs and not so good FISMs and even the not so good ones are fantastic.

The gang in Italy is saying that this will be the best FISM ever. Mike intends to find out for himself by spending a week in Italy. Working FISM is always an honor but this time he'll be there just for fun. He hopes you will too because he always enjoys making new FISM friends. See you in Rimini.

5. My First Magic Shop
--------------------------------------------
Message by Stan Allen, Editor of MAGIC Magazine

Do you remember the first magic shop you visited?

In this month's cover story on Disneyland's Main Street Magic, we cover just a few of the magicians who credit their start to this tiny little shop in the Magic Kingdom. And you can add my name to that list.

I would spend a day at Disneyland with my magic friends, and we would visit all three shops - Main Street, Merlin's, and the Magicland at the Disneyland Hotel. I'm sure we asked "What's that?" a million times before purchasing a new effect for our "shows."

With the park celebrating its sixtieth anniversary on July 17, it seemed like a great time to cover "The Magic Inside the Magic Kingdom." Who better to write the behind-the scenes story than someone who is an even bigger Disney fan than I am, and who actually worked at Main Street Magic: Kari Hendler.

We also cover Dan White, Lynetta Welch, the AMA Awards Show, The Surrealists, Masters of Illusion, Impossibilities, a "Tomorrowland" magic show, and a lot more.

The July 2015 issue of MAGIC Magazine is currently in the mail, while the digital edition is available right now online.

6. The Magic Word Podcast - The Illusionists - Hearing the Imopossible
--------------------------------------------
Message by Scott Wells, M.I.M.C. with Gold Star

The Illusionists have been setting box office records around the world with their mind-blowing magic show. Seven of the world's top magic entertainers have performed and delighted audiences from Sydney's Opera House to Broadway theaters in New York City. This week on The Magic Word, we sit down with a few of the cast members to talk about their tour, some of the memorable experiences on the road (good and bad) and how they were selected to be on the tour.

During the chat, we are joined by David Williamson who was coming in to fill in for Jeff Hobson for one day. This changed the dynamic of the conversation as you can imagine and made for a rollicking good time. After our chat, I saw Antonio Hoyos in the lobby and he told me more stories about his years working as the little person "Charlie Chaplin" for Kevin James and his years as the little person "Roy" with Siegfried and Roy.

You can read the blog, watch a video, see some photos, listen online or download the MP3 files at: : http://themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/the-illusionists And, as usual, you can also listen through iTunes, Stitcher, Tunein and FeedPress.

We are reaching 1,000 followers on Facebook. Join your friends and hear what's coming up at: http://facebook.com/themagicwordpodcast And you can support The Magic Word at: http://www.patreon.com/TheMagicWord

7. Remarkable Magic #394 - Nick Lewin

Message by Nick Lewin (US)

The trick that made me want to be a magician.

Like most magicians my initial interest in magic was sparked at an early age by the gift of a magic set. Then I discovered the joys of the magic catalogue and the special thrill of an occasional visit to an actual magic shop. It quickly became an exciting and rewarding hobby.

At the age of eleven I persuaded my parents to take me to one of the monthly magic shows hosted by the London Society of Magicians at the Conway Hall in London. That was when everything changed and I realized that magic was going to be more than just an enjoyable hobby for me.

The headliner of that show was the legendary Irish magician Billy McComb, and it was watching McComb perform that I realized that magic was something even more special an important to me than I could ever have guessed. Billy was a riot to watch, he kept the audience in stiches from the moment he walked onstage right up until he received is final ovation.

McComb presented a lot of great magic that night---he even produced a live hen! However there was one particular trick he performed that impressed me beyond anything I had seen before; it could have been the simplicity that made such a profound impression on me. What was it that made such an impression on me?

Billy stood in the centre of the stage and while presenting a non-stop stream of one-liner jokes he took a length of white thread, casually broke it into pieces and then restored them to their original condition with a casual elegance that took my breath away. There was something so special about the way he commanded a large theatre with such a simple and tiny piece of magic.

Sitting out front in the audience I was hit by the sudden realization that this was what I wanted to do. My dream was to captivate a huge audience with something as simple as a length of thread and some carefully chosen words. This was quite simply the trick that made me want to be a magician.

For the last 40 years I have lived this vision and performed that same piece of magic in nightclubs and theatres around the world making a very good living doing so. It took a long while to perfect the trick, but I now perform it every show and the applause, emotions and gasps I receive from audiences tell me that it was not wasted years.

Thank you for the inspiration Billy, you gave me my first glimpse of something that was as close to true theatrical magic as I can imagine. Direct, funny and powerful you introduced me to the most important trick I would ever learn to master. I will never forget the chills I first got when I saw you perform it that long ago night in London.

8. Festival - Travel Distance - #365 - Kyle Peron

Travel distance will be a big factor not in only what fees you charge but also how you market to these various festivals.

The first decision you must make is whether you want to sleep in your own bed at night or if you are willing to travel greater distances and stay at hotels. The choice really is yours and it is one you want to decide upon before you start your marketing efforts.

You must decide just what your festival performance area will be and how far you are willing to go to get there. I find that having a map and drawing a large circle from my home to the farthest area I am willing to work is a great way to start figuring out not only my travel radius but also travel fees. I call this zone mapping.

For myself, my travel radius is about 100 - 150 miles from my home base. I then draw circles in pen for every twenty miles out from my base. This is my way of gauging how far a festival is from me and how much I should add on for an appropriate travel fee. It also easily tells me if I may need to add a hotel fee for shows further away. I keep this map on the wall in my office and near my phone. It can be a great tool when you are making or taking a call.

There are many software programs and online apps that allow you to be able to customize maps for yourself. Use these as they are great tools. You might want to place the final zone map in an application called Dropbox.com so you have access to it wherever you go.

If you do make the choice to travel farther distances for your festival shows, then include hotel accommodations in with your contract and add this price to your day rate. The idea here is to still keep it simple for the festival group to make a decision. I find that adding the fee to my day rate makes it easier for them and does not confuse them. I have also found that many times some hotels are corporate sponsors of the event and the festival committee has access to some of these rooms. Free accommodations, everyone wins.

I don't believe that it is a good practice to offer a standard base fee + gas fee + travel fee + hotel fee. If you lay it out like this, it discourages festivals. It works against you. Learn what YOU need to do the show and create a base fee that covers all of your costs.

I have also experienced, at some of the larger festivals, that hotels in the area often sponsor the festival or fair you are attending. If you can, you can always ask or check on the festival website to see who the sponsors are for that year. If a hotel is a sponsor for the festival, you may be able to get the rooms comped for you as a means of promoting the local hotel that keeps you.

If you have a big hotel chain, with locations everywhere you plan to work, you could try to obtain them as a sponsor of your own. They not only supply you with the accommodations you need but pay so much money for each festival you perform at. In exchange, they get mention at every show you do. This can work well for you and you never know unless you ASK. I know this can happen, as I have seen it in my travels.

If you cannot get a sponsor for your hotel stay, then you may still want to try and keep your hotel room cost down. It is always a good idea to check into hotels in the area of the festival. A hotel that is both easy to get to and affordable, is most ideal. I say a close hotel, as often times you will not get out of the festival until the festival closes and you then get permission to enter the grounds with your vehicle to pack back up. This means it could be a long and tiring night. A hotel that is close works wonders for this situation.

When it comes to accommodations, you may not want to be too particular about where you stay. Lower rates have been the norm at some hotels if you do your homework prior to heading out on the road. Also, look into the entertainment books for the city or area that you will be performing for. If you are doing a tour and doing several festivals in the same area, these entertainment books can save you money on meals, hotels etc. Also, you may want to use your credit card rewards points if you have them. Most places will deduct a fee from your hotel stay and in some cases you may get the night for free.

AAA is another great idea for the festival performer who is traveling farther away from home for his or her shows. Not only will it save you in the event of a vehicle breakdown, but you can get some great savings on hotels, rental cars etc. I have AAA and have been very glad I have had it on many occasions.

Now do not get confused here. Many of you may be saying why doesn't the festival put you up at a hotel? Well some of them can and some may offer to do it. However, my goal is to make it easy on the festival. What I do is no ahead of time if I feel I have to stay overnight. This is often my choice and not the festivals. I am the one deciding if I need to stay or not.

Because of this, I try and make it easy on the festival. If I know I need a hotel room, I simply add it to my base fee when I offer my packages to the festival. By doing it in this fashion, I can choose the hotel I want to stay in and make it easy for myself and for the festival in the process.

In case you have been putting off booking until the last minute this is your last chance to register for one of the best kept secrets in magic.

Add to that the sharp witted mindreader Graham Jolley, the rarely seen John Fealey (star of the Palazzo Shows across Europe), the legendary Wayne Dobson, four time Royal Variety Show ventriloquist Paul Zerdin and special guests Magic Castle President Erika Larsen and the Princess herself, Irene Larsen, and you'll see why you won't want to miss what will be an amazing few days.

Also attending this high quality event will be more magical names including Gerry Cottle, Geoff Ray, Don Bevan, David Hemingway ... and a couple more surprise guests!

13. Long-Lost Houdini Film Restored
--------------------------------------------
Article and video clip forward by Bernard Reid (NZ)

http://wnep.com/2015/06/13/long-lost-houdini-film-restored/

Scranton - A rare film starring Harry Houdini, which many people thought was destroyed, is now being seen for the first time in nearly 100 years.

"This is the most exciting thing that's happened in Houdini history," said Dorothy Dietrich, Director of the Houdini Museum. "This is the holy grail of Houdini history."

"We are showing a film everybody thought in the industry thought was not available ever," added Dick Brookz, Houdini historian.

It's called 'The Grim Game' and it's the great escape artist's first feature film. Like many movies made in the early 1900's, it was made on nitrate film, which was known to catch fire and explode. That's why there's no record for many old movies.

"The statistics are pretty much 10% of the old films still exist," Dietrich added. "90% of all that work is gone."

The only known copy of 'The Grim Game' existed with a collector in Brooklyn, New York. For years, people at the Houdini Museum tried to get the owner to share the film with no success. That is, until last year, when that collector turned 95 and he finally changed his mind.

"The whole thing is a dream come true," Dietrich explained. "We've waited our whole life for this to happen, now the world will know once and for all was Houdini a great escape artist but he was really a good actor as well."

Among those in the audience seeing the entire film for the first time is Jeff Blood, the great nephew of Houdini.

"We've only seen a few snippets of it before because it's been lost for almost 100 years," said Blood. "So we have a DVD with about five minutes of it, and that's all we thought there ever was."

While relatives and fans were eager to see the film, one could argue the movie's new life brings the most joy to Houdini himself.

"[Houdini] said of this film 'The Grim Game:' 'The present generation can see me in person but I want my most thrilling feats on the screen so people in later years can assure themselves that I actually did them.'"

The film was restored with the help of Turner Classic Movies, who was so impressed by the quality of the film reel that they hired a composer to add a score to the silent film.

The museum plans to have more showings of the rare film throughout the summer.
