4. Marvin Berglas Wins Magic Circle's Prestigious Maskelyne Award
--------------------------------------------
Message by Marvin Berglas (UK)

Head of Marvin's Magic, Marvin Berglas, has won the celebrated Magic Circle Maskelyne Award for services to British Magic. The Maskelyne Award is the most respected award in The Magic Circle, presented exclusively to those at the peak of the magic industry. Paying tribute to John Nevil Maskelyne, founding father of a magical dynasty that presented magic in London for 60 years, this award is a tremendous honour and is the fourth major award Marvin has scooped this year.

Making this achievement even more impressive is the fact it is the first time a father and son have ever both received the award. Marvin's father, the legendary David Berglas, won the award 20 years ago as a revered man of mystery inspiring the likes of Marvin, Derren Brown, Dynamo and many other magicians.

With additional awards from the British Magical Society's Presidents' Cup for Outstanding Contribution, The British Toy and Hobby Association's top honour for Outstanding Contribution and Marvin's iMagic winning the Electronic Toy of the Year, it's been a remarkable year for Marvin and the Marvin's Magic team.

5. Nick Lewin - Masters Of Illusion Live

Message by Nick Lewin (US)

Susan and I had the good fortune to catch the "Masters of Illusion Live" tour last night when they stopped off at the beautiful Majestic Theatre in San Antonio. This was the second date of the current 21-day segment of their ongoing tour. While there is a little shaking down to do, I suspect the show will be as tight as a drum within a couple of dates.

The show was an excellent family production that was jam packed with magic that thrilled the audience and left them on their feet applauding at the finale. It was a very nicely presented affair that kept every audience members attention throughout its two hour running time.

The show featured Jason Andrews, Michael Finney, Greg Gleason, Nathan Phan and Michael Turco. All the performances were excellent, with Michael Finney stealing the show (as he so often does!) with his wonderfully seasoned comedy magic. I want to give a special shout out to Jason Andrews for his masterful blend of manipulation and participation magic.

I have to really commend Gay Blackstone on the way she has turned her award winning TV show into a full evening production. Her understanding of magic and skill at matching performers to her ticket buying demographic is exemplary. She brings another era and dimension to the already legendary influence of the Blackstone family in the magic world.

I would highly recommend catching the tour if you have the opportunity. Here are the upcoming dates;

I am a firm believer in getting to thank my audiences and giving them a chance to meet me after my shows. It is a great way of letting them know I appreciate them and a means in which to have kids meet an entertainer in person. It can really make an impact on them.

Whenever I bring this topic up, folks ask me if I sell my autograph. In other words am I making money off of it? I never sell my autograph at all. My feeling is that if not for the audience, I would be out of work. My audiences are everything to me.

Greeting my audiences and allowing them to get free autographs also does other important things for me. For starters, it allows the client/s to see crowds of people engaging me afterwards. It just simply looks good in their eyes.

Also, if I have a BOR table selling my products, this is a great way and method of getting them over to it. I have one part of the table where I am standing to meet the audience and sign autographs for the kids who want them. This leads folks over in droves to my BOR table and creates an atmosphere where they are much more willing to spend money while they are over there.

Now one method to get folks over to want an autograph is by offering them something totally for free in which you can sign for them. There are many options here. One of the easiest is to make a Magicians Assistant Certificate and give them out to any and every child.

They get the certificate from you after the show and you sign it for them right there. Not only does it give them something they want, but you get them to your BOR table and they go home with something special that also brands you and has your contact information on it. This can easily add up to more shows for you later on.

Other things you can give out for free and sign could be postcards, your own trading cards or even free photos of you. The idea is to give something to them of value and do so freely.

Remember that in many cases, you are the first live magician a lot of the audience may have ever seen. It is important to our art that you conduct yourself in a professional manner and allow folks to see you and magic as a good thing. As something they enjoy, want to see more of and respect.

Signing autographs is also a wonderful way in which to engage the audience. Getting a chance to talk with them, thank them and hear what they have to say. When signing autographs I am always listening but also asking those questions, this is a great opportunity for you to learn from them. What did they like about the show? What was their favorite effect, etc.? It is a means to get a good quote or even a testimonial.

In short, show respect to them to gain respect back. Signing an autograph is a gesture of thanks. It is a means in which to show appreciation to your audience. Without them, who are we really?

As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your thoughts. So if you have any thoughts on my articles or suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly at magic4u02@aol.com. I would love to hear from you.

7. The Magic Word Podcast - Discovering Ammar
--------------------------------------------
Message by Scott Wells, M.I.M.C. with Gold Star

This week on The Magic Word, one of magic's greatest teachers, Michael Ammar, talks about his recent teaching venture: Discover Magic. This is a magic class, or camp, for children 8 to 12 years old to learn magic using tried and true methods. Michael already has 52 instructors signed up to teach this class across the country, but he is having an "open enrollment" from October 14th through the 28th soliciting just two more instructors. This is a great opportunity for magicians to earn what could be significant income during the day, and help the youth to learn valuable skills. You can get the jump on things now and find more information on this project at http://DiscoverMagic.com

But the first part of our chat deals with his newest trick developed by Losander, "Exquisite" which is a floating wine glass. He discusses the years of research and development that resulted in bringing this to market. It is a lesson in perseverance to make a quality product. We also talk about working cruise ships, the changing nature of giving lectures, and some of his experiences as a guest on many television talk shows.

You can see a video, get important links, see some photos, listen to the podcast online and download the MP3 file at: http://themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/259-michael-ammar Of course you can download the podcast from your favorite podcatcher for your smart phone or tablet as well as catching it on iTunes, TuneIn, FeedPress and Stitcher.

Be sure to keep up with what's going on and what's coming up on The Magic Word by "Liking" us on Facebook at http://facebook.com/TheMagicWordPodcast and be sure to subscribe to the RSS feed so you never miss a future podcast. I have the next five weeks lined up with some really great (and varied) guests that I know you will love.

10. Japan Magic 2016
--------------------------------------------
Message by Paul Critelli (US)

What if . . .

. . . I told you that you could go to a three-day Close-up Magic convention in Tokyo, Japan and all it would cost would be about $US3500?

You'd tell me to get back on my medication.

But . . . what If I told you that for about that price you would

Spend a total of eleven days in Japan
See some incredible sights of Tokyo by day and night (Magic bars and plenty more . . . )
Take some day tours to fantastic towns and sights outside of Tokyo (either by the fastest and most comfortable trains in the world or private coach)
Spend one night in an authentic Japanese inn (Ryokan)
Stay in incredibly clean and comfortable 3 - 4 stars hotels in Tokyo
Dine on some of the best food in the world at a Magic party and award show that is the climax to three-days of a Close-up Magic convention that YOU will have the opportunity to PARTICIPATE in as you have NEVER participated in any other Magic convention
Meet some world-famous Magical superstars
Become friends with people from Japan and a few other places called "the rest of the world" Have the time of your life . . .

Well, now you might say,

"Tell me more, Japan Lover!"

OK, The Japan Cup wants YOU to attend. The Japan Cup also knows that you MIGHT have a significant other who may only want to see some of the shows and attend the Award Party (believe me, this is a MUST GO TO event!). There is a slight difference between the "Full Convention Attendee" (show, lectures, workshops, surprises like you will not believe, the Award Party) and the "Show and Party Only Attendee." The price difference is about $100.00.

The rest of the package is a chance to experience the beauty of Japan, the wonder of its culture and history, and the hospitality and friendliness of the Japanese people.

Once you visit Japan, You Will Be Back.

So, we have put together a Japan Magic 2016 Package that is for the casual traveler who is on a budget, likes new and wonderful and safe adventures, and does not need a minute-by-minute schedule! Of course, there will be tours for the small group (we are looking at under 12 people), but if you are like I am, you love surprises and the freedom to NOT do some things. We got you covered, but we also predict you will LOVE every minute of what we have to offer.

This is a first for me, but the real professional behind this is Sakura Nakazato - THE best travel agent that I have ever met. Believe me, even if you don't take us up on this offer, call her in the future for ANY and ALL of your international travel needs. She loves Magicians and she likes to do favors for me! I am very lucky!

So, IF you have any interest in this, PLEASE email me as soon as possible.

Do we have all the details and final costs down? No.

Do we need to have SOME idea of people who are very interested in this great trip now? Yes.

We are looking at some deadlines for booking what we need to book by the early part of December - flights (costs vary from $1300 to $1500 depending on where you live in the USA) - and we would have to have some deposits in.

There are many other things I would run by you, but this is a first notification. If Japan Magic 2016 works, OUTSTANDING! If we don't have enough interest (and that is a few as 6 or so), then we tried.

Contact me for more information and talk.

Thank you,

Paul Critelli - MagicPaul@aol.com

Message by Steve Moyer (US)

84th Annual Hollywood Christmas Parade Announces
Penn & Teller As The Grand Marshals For 2015
The Live Event Which Takes Place On
Sunday, November 29, 2015 In Hollywood, Ca
To Be Hosted By Erik Estrada, Laura Mckenzie,
Dean Cain And Montel Williams
Live Musical Performances to Benefit the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation

Los Angeles, CA (October 15, 2015) - The 84th Annual Hollywood Christmas Parade, the largest Christmas celebration in America, announces that Penn & Teller, stars of the hit CW series "Penn & Teller: Fool Us," will be the Grand Marshals for this year's 2015 extravaganza. Presented and produced by Associated Television International, the live event, taped for network television, will take place on Hollywood Boulevard on Sunday, November 29 at 5:00 p.m., and will include live musical performances that will take place on two stages. The parade and television broadcast will be co-hosted by popular television personalities Erik Estrada, Laura McKenzie, Dean Cain and Montel Williams.

The 84th Annual Hollywood Christmas Parade will premiere as a two-hour special on the CW Network on December 11 at 8:00 p.m. Eastern and Pacific. Long-time parade partner Hallmark Channel will air multiple runs beginning December 19 on their Hallmark Movies & Mysteries channel. The parade will also air to more than one million American servicemen and women worldwide on American Forces Network.

Jim Romanovich, President of Associated Television International, said: "We are thrilled to once again be a part of The Hollywood Christmas Parade, one of the greatest holiday traditions of all time, which is enjoyed by millions of families each year. This year, we are especially gratified to have both the CW and our good friends at Hallmark as our television partners. We are equally thrilled to be partnered with Toys for Tots once again. Through the parade and the generous support of our media partners the CW, Hallmark, Radio Disney, KOST, Entertainment Tonight, Variety, and so many more, we can continue to help provide the necessary awareness tools for the Marine Toys for Tots program which is essential in their providing gifts to less fortunate children everywhere."

A true Hollywood tradition for 84 years, the parade attracts more than one million in attendance each year, with larger than life inflatable character balloons and celebrity filled cars making the much heralded trek down the over three mile parade route.

Grand Marshals Penn & Teller, world acclaimed magicians and entertainers, have been performing as a duo together for the last four decades, combining magic with comedy. Headlining in Las Vegas at The Penn & Teller Theatre at The Rio Hotel, the two are currently starring in the "Penn & Teller: Fool Us" series produced by 1/17 Productions and airing on the CW Network, and have also been featured in numerous stage and television shows.

12. The Magician Business Podcast
--------------------------------------------
Message by Julian Mather (Aust)

What's 4 ears, 2 mouths, takes 23 hours by plane to get from one side to the other and has been listened to 100,000 times?

It's the Magician Business podcast hosted by Australian magician Julian Mather and his UK compatriot Ken Kelly.

The Magician Business podcast is a rich resource of business and marketing focused discussions with prominent magicians and entertainers like Eric Knaus (the Great Zucchini), Jeff McBride, Marvin Berglas, Doug Scheer, Paul Romhany. You'll find everything except ... tricks. This is all about generating bookings, turning it into income and looking after you and your family.

It's not all big names. These well-known performers are complimented by workers from the magic trenches. Each share tips and strategies born from their years of experience.

I asked Ken and Julian to fill in some of the gaps behind this somewhat hidden enterprise.

Who are Ken and Julian anyway?

Ken and Julian are a lucky accident. Our weaknesses have become our strength. Julian flicks a creative switch in his head and produces great content giving little thought to how it could be best delivered.

Ken's not so fussed on the writing but goes borderline OCD when it comes to testing and measuring just how well online content is doing ... and he's really good at it.

We like to think our audience are the winners. Ours is a unique two person voice. We celebrate our differing approaches and put ego to the side. Whatever works best is our method of the moment until it all changes again - and it will - and we go back to the drawing board.

Why did you start the Magician Business Podcast?

We're working magicians and we're doing okay. Not all magicians are.

Magicians by design often focus on the creative side of things and overlook simple business fundamentals. We all know someone like this.

Ken and I both have personal stories of older magicians we know who have spent decades bringing joy and wonder to the world and now are faced with difficult retirements because they never planned for their futures.

We want to change that.

There was a time where you could get by with a simple Yellow Pages ad, a solid act and lifetime of goodwill. Not anymore. The internet is crucial to you bringing home the bacon. The internet is also overwhelming and ever changing.

We want to be magician's guides, to stop them going down dead ends, to show them the best paths to take though the online landscape. This is territory we know well and thrive in.

Not that we work alone. We seek out the best practices by bring you the voices of those who are succeeding though our podcast series. We apply their ideas, test the process and share the results by pulling back the curtains on our own personal websites and sometimes sharing a bit too much information.

What's different about Magician Business?

We never thought we would quote Oprah Winfrey, but here goes ... "The big secret in life is that there is no big secret. Whatever your goal, you can get there if you're willing to work."

This is not a place where you will find the 7 Secrets To Online Success or 5 SEO Tips Only The Pros Know. We firmly believe that there are no right answers to all of this. There are however best practises.

These best-of-ideas are what we bring to you through our podcasts. Thinking that great SEO and a sexy website will solve your booking downturn is folly. This is about expanding your horizons and growing as a person as much as it is about filling your calendar.

So where is the catch?

"All the world is made of faith, and trust, and pixie dust."
- J.M. Barrie, Peter Pan

As magicians we know that pixie dust doesn't really work. Faith and trust have taken a battering over the years so it's no surprise that many will be looking for the catch.

Maybe this can be your pleasant surprise of the week; there's none.

We do offer paid memberships to our training courses if you want to take things to the next level however everything on the site is free. Sometimes we ask for an email address. That too results in us sending you quality training for free that many rub their eyes in disbelief that we are just giving away.

This is our motivation ...

The Careful Builder

I saw them tearing a building down, a gang of men in my home town. A heave and a ho and a yes yes yell they swung a beam and a big wall fell.
I said to the foremen are these men skilled like the ones you'd use if you had to build?
He laughed and said 'oh no indeed, the most common labour's all I need.'
Because I can destroy in a day or two.
What it takes a builder ten years to do.

So I thought to myself as I went my way, which of these rolls am I willing to play.
Am I one who's tearing down as I carelessly make my way around.
Or am I one who builds with care so my family, my community was a little better
Because I was there.

Everything can be found at www.magicianbusiness.com

You can listen to the episodes directly on the site or you can subscribe to iTunes. It's all explained on the site.

We are currently in recess after Series 1 and working on other projects - like www.kidsentertainerhub.com - before we fire up for Series 2. Mind you there are over 50 episodes there which will keep your head spinning with new ideas for months to come.
