2. Magic For The Eyes From A Deaf Magician
--------------------------------------------
Article forwarded on by Peter Stevenson (US)

Wisconsin State Journal
The magician known as Magic Morgan is a showman first - whether making audiences laugh with his comic timing or inspiring gasps as he makes a flapping white dove appear from thin air.

It's the happy and amazed expressions he sees from the stage that are gratifying. The applause at the end of his shows matters less, because Matthew "Magic" Morgan doesn't hear it.

Morgan, who is deaf, is one of Wisconsin's many colorful magicians. He and his wife and stage partner, Liliana, are frequent performers at Kids in the Rotunda at the Overture Center, and will be making an appearance there Saturday, with free, family-friendly shows at 9:30 a.m., 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.

An interpreter is also part of the show, translating the couple's American Sign Language into verbal English for non-ASL users.

3. British Ring Featured In January 2016 Linking Ring
--------------------------------------------
Message by Dennis Schick (US)

It has been the tradition of The Linking Ring for many years to feature the largest Ring in the International Brotherhood of Magicians -- The British Ring, Ring 25 -- in the January issue. That is why the Ring 25 president, Paul Ray, is on the cover and the subject of a personal profile; and why this month's Parade (tricks) was written by members of Ring 25.

Announced in a full-page ad about the 2016 I.B.M. Annual Convention (July 2-5) is the special honored guest, Johnny and Pam Thompson. Also known as The Great Tomsoni and Company, the Thompsons will be recognized for their many years of contributions to the magical arts.

Other features this month include: Daniel Hernandez won first place in the youth category of the 2015 I.B.M. Stage Contest, and received as one of his prizes a trip to New York City and a visit to Fantasma Magic. Read his first-hand report. Christopher T. Magician shares his secrets of his comedy kid-show success. After twenty-five years, one of the largest brick-and-mortar magic stores in the country -- Mr. Magic in Little Rock, Arkansas -- closed December 31, another victim of the Internet. Read about the evolution of the store, from beginning to end. Also in Arkansas -- in Hot Springs -- the third annual Festival of Magic was bigger than ever, but with several changes.

Our columnists have been busy, too. There are ten this month. Kent Cummins writes about "Publicity and Promotion" in his Marketing And Magic column. John Tudor continues to tie magic and the theater together with "The Sword of El Duco" in his Experiments In Magic Theatre column. Bev Bergeron is still telling personal tales in his Cutting Up Jackpots column, this time focusing on "Roy Huston: Illusionist, Drummer, Showman." Scott Hood continues his column The Therapy Of Magic, focusing this month on gags and laughter. Skip Way is still Polishing The Rings and in his current column gives advice on "Developing lesson plans," regarding teaching magic.

The Card Corner by Mike Powers, lets Paul Lelekis use his space this month, with "Horse of a different color." a "twisting" routine. In Simple Diversions, Andrew Woo brings us "Pocket Floating Queen," his version of the Floating Lady as a walk-around effect. Jeff Prace's The Expert At The Tech Table this month features his adaptation of rope magic to technology, using earbuds. In his Situationally Yours column, Chris Beason tells us about his "Die Cast," an on-the-spot challenge you can make using gimmicked dice. Michael Breggar brings us "A Self-Working ACAAN" in his Auto-Magic column. But he does add a cautionary, "Maybe" about that self-working claim.

Members of the International Brotherhood of Magicians receive the journal as part of their membership. For more information, go to www.magician.org.

6. Magic Word Podcast - Time For Change With Cosmo Solano
--------------------------------------------
Message by Scott Wells, M.I.M.C. with God Star

We jump back into the thick of controversy surrounding "thievery in magic" initiated by Gregory Wilson. Cosmo Solano (best known for "Quantum Connection" aka "Q") developed and marketed a trick called "International Pocket Change" which, to the spectator has the same effect as Gregory Wilson's "Exact Change". Essentially, a number is spoken by the spectator and that amount of change is immediately extracted from the pocket.

Well, the controversy stems from when this idea came out, who first thought of it, how was the conversation handled…basically, who knew it and when did they know it. This podcast goes into detail about the conversations between Cosmo and Gregory. This podcast moves forward the conversation in our community about what constitutes thievery and entitlement. You can be the judge as we continue our investigation and future discussions in this serial podcast I like to call #MagicCereal

You can watch videos of the two different versions of this effect, see some photos, read the blog, listen online, and download the MP3 file at: http://themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/272-cosmo-solano And, of course, you can also download the podcast using your favorite podcatcher or through iTunes, Stitcher, Tunein and FeedPress. And be sure to Like us on Facebook at http://facebook.com/themagicwordpodcast and follow us on Twitter at #MagicWordPod And don't forget to add the hashtag #MagicCereal if you want to add to the discussion on this topic.

This week we welcome a new sponsor, ManageGigs.com to The Magic Word. Thanks, Chris Stolz, founder and creator of ManageGigs.com for your support.

7. Magical Healing - #388 - Kyle Peron
--------------------------------------------
Message by Kyle Peron (US)
magic4u02@aol.com

http://www.kpmagicproducts.com

A friend of mine posted something on Facebook talking about how magic allowed him to get over his Autism. It taught him how to act and interact and taught him social skills. We both shared our stories and I felt I should share mine with you. If I can help anyone who may be experiencing what I did, then that to me would be well worth the effort typing this out.

I started losing my hearing when I was age 8. I am now about 65% deaf in both ears. Imagine growing up not hearing what others hear and basically being treated well...different. My family and friends always treated me right and fair. But I certainly was not that outgoing or at least not in the way most kids were. I hid behind a lot of things simply out of fear of being the focus. I never wanted anyone looking at me like some sort of oddball.

I was told many times by many people that I would not be able to do things and that it was too hard. They all meant well as they were protecting me I guess. My folks and my family never held me back...ever. It was them that always made me want to do new things and try new hobbies. They never ever told me no or you can't do that. That is why to this day I have so many hobbies and so many interests.

If there was something I wanted to do, I simply did it. I learned that failure is never failure if you learn from it. I will tell you I failed a LOT at things. lol But I would do it all over again. Every failure helped me to learn something new. Every failure pushed me forward to reach a new goal. I always enjoyed trying something that intrigued me. I guess the fact that I couldn't hear well made me realize that quitting on something because it is hard is not a good enough reason.

Magic was one of the things that broke me out of my mold. It allowed me to discover who I was and who I could be. It allowed me to gain confidence in myself. It taught me that I could do anything I put my mind to doing. The sheer notion of being on a stage in front of people scared me to death. I forced myself out there shaking like a leaf because I wanted to do it. I wanted to say, "yes I did it!". Not for anyone else but ME.

I also wanted folks to be proud of me. If I could do something hearing people could not do, that would be something special. That notion healed me inside in a very different kind of way. That first smile and that first applause I got from an audience was better than any medicine I ever took. It was better than anything any doctor could ever do for me. Man what a feeling it was. I never knew it at the time, but today I can tell you it was a feeling of simply being accepted.

I was never quite use to people and strangers liking me just for being ME. This is always why I hid behind me doing things. I took up art so that people would like the art and then like me for it. I took up drumming for the same reason. I was never used to being the total focus and having people stare at me in a GOOD way simply for me being me. I was more used to people not quite understanding this strange little kid.

Magic has taken me around the world and has given me the chance to do things I thought I would never EVER get a chance to do. It has opened up doors and it has healed me inside. It still does to this very day. I now always remember what magic did for me and what it still does. This is why I smile at every show and why I give 100% effort every time out. It makes me view magic in a different way. Magic is not something I WANT to do. It is something I HAVE to do. If I never got paid a dime for performing this art, I would still be doing it.

I always take time after my shows to meet and greet the audience. Many wonder why I do it and why not just collect the check and head home or to the next gig. I do it because I realized that THESE audiences is what has healed me over the years. Without the audience who am I really? I am a lonely person standing on stage by myself. My audiences help me and in return it is my pleasure to try and help them. If I can give a smile or make someone laugh for even a few minutes, then that to me is giving back.

I know magic means more to me than to some performers. I never will take the art of magic for granted. To me it is a gift I will cherish as long as I have the ability to make a difference.

Thanks for letting me share this with you.

As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your thoughts. So if you have any thoughts on my articles or suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly at magic4u02@aol.com. I would love to hear from you.

The first person to be known as a conjuror during the Renaissance, Hieronymus Scotto entertained aristocrats and heads of state throughout Europe with his impressive juggling, card, and mentalism tricks. Not much is known about him, but some records show that he came to gain the favour of royalities like Austria's Archduke Franz Ferdinand during his time. 11. The Magician Business Podcast
--------------------------------------------
Message by Julian Mather (Australia)

What's 4 ears, 2 mouths, takes 23 hours by plane to get from one side to the other and has been listened to 100,000 times?

It's the Magician Business podcast hosted by Australian magician Julian Mather and his UK compatriot Ken Kelly.

The Magician Business podcast is a rich resource of business and marketing focused discussions with prominent magicians and entertainers like Eric Knaus (the Great Zucchini), Jeff McBride, Marvin Berglas, Doug Scheer, Paul Romhany. You'll find everything except ... tricks. This is all about generating bookings, turning it into income and looking after you and your family.

It's not all big names. These well-known performers are complimented by workers from the magic trenches. Each share tips and strategies born from their years of experience.

I asked Ken and Julian to fill in some of the gaps behind this somewhat hidden enterprise.

Who are Ken and Julian anyway?

Ken and Julian are a lucky accident. Our weaknesses have become our strength. Julian flicks a creative switch in his head and produces great content giving little thought to how it could be best delivered.

Ken's not so fussed on the writing but goes borderline OCD when it comes to testing and measuring just how well online content is doing ... and he's really good at it.

We like to think our audience are the winners. Ours is a unique two person voice. We celebrate our differing approaches and put ego to the side. Whatever works best is our method of the moment until it all changes again - and it will - and we go back to the drawing board.

Why did you start the Magician Business Podcast?

We're working magicians and we're doing okay. Not all magicians are.

Magicians by design often focus on the creative side of things and overlook simple business fundamentals. We all know someone like this.

Ken and I both have personal stories of older magicians we know who have spent decades bringing joy and wonder to the world and now are faced with difficult retirements because they never planned for their futures.

We want to change that.

There was a time where you could get by with a simple Yellow Pages ad, a solid act and lifetime of goodwill. Not anymore. The internet is crucial to you bringing home the bacon. The internet is also overwhelming and ever changing.

We want to be magician's guides, to stop them going down dead ends, to show them the best paths to take though the online landscape. This is territory we know well and thrive in.

Not that we work alone. We seek out the best practices by bring you the voices of those who are succeeding though our podcast series. We apply their ideas, test the process and share the results by pulling back the curtains on our own personal websites and sometimes sharing a bit too much information.

What's different about Magician Business?

We never thought we would quote Oprah Winfrey, but here goes ... "The big secret in life is that there is no big secret. Whatever your goal, you can get there if you're willing to work."

This is not a place where you will find the 7 Secrets To Online Success or 5 SEO Tips Only The Pros Know. We firmly believe that there are no right answers to all of this. There are however best practices.

These best-of-ideas are what we bring to you through our podcasts.
Thinking that great SEO and a sexy website will solve your booking downturn is folly. This is about expanding your horizons and growing as a person as much as it is about filling your calendar.

So where is the catch?

"All the world is made of faith, and trust, and pixie dust."
- J.M. Barrie, Peter Pan

As magicians we know that pixie dust doesn't really work. Faith and trust have taken a battering over the years so it's no surprise that many will be looking for the catch.

Maybe this can be your pleasant surprise of the week; there's none.

We do offer paid memberships to our training courses if you want to take things to the next level however everything on the site is free. Sometimes we ask for an email address. That too results in us sending you quality training for free that many rub their eyes in disbelief that we are just giving away.

This is our motivation ...

The Careful Builder

I saw them tearing a building down, a gang of men in my home town. A heave and a ho and a yes yes yell they swung a beam and a big wall fell. I said to the foremen are these men skilled like the ones you'd use if you had to build?
He laughed and said 'oh no indeed, the most common labour's all I need.'
Because I can destroy in a day or two.
What it takes a builder ten years to do.

So I thought to myself as I went my way, which of these rolls am I willing to play.
Am I one who's tearing down as I carelessly make my way around.
Or am I one who builds with care so my family, my community was a little better
Because I was there.

Everything can be found at www.magicianbusiness.com

You can listen to the episodes directly on the site or you can subscribe to iTunes. It's all explained on the site.

We are currently in recess after Series 1 and working on other projects - like www.kidsentertainerhub.com - before we fire up for Series 2. Mind you there are over 50 episodes there which will keep your head spinning with new ideas for months to come.

13. FCM Announces 2016 Convention Info
--------------------------------------------
Message by Dennis Schick (US)

The Fellowship of Christian Magicians (FCM) has announced details for its 2016 International Convention. It will move back to July (25-29), so mark your calendars. It will still be in Nashville, Tennessee, and on the campus of Trevecca University, as it was this year. But next year it will be held entirely within the spacious Trevecca Community Church on the campus. The theme for 2016 will be: "A Year of Second Chances," based on the Biblical verse 2 Corinthians 5:17.

The emphasis throughout the five days of the convention is learning, teaching, and sharing the performing arts of magic, clowns, ventriloquism, juggling, puppets, face painting, balloons, and drama/story-telling/chalk art. Of course the emphasis is on applying each of these to spreading the gospel. There are workshops, nightly shows, hospital visits, inspirational talks, exhibitors, and even a flea market and an auction to sell your unwanted things and stuff.

For more information about the international Fellowship of Christian
Magicians, go to their Website, www.fcm.org
