2. Broken Wand - Tom Mullica
--------------------------------------------
Facebook message from Dal Sanders (US)

I have just received confirmation that Tom Mullica has passed away after being removed from life support.

Tom Mullica was the most unique magician I ever met. He was incredibly funny and was an expert with a deck of cards. I saw him often at The Tom-Foolery in Atlanta and many times after that. When I started working in comedy clubs in the 80s he gave me great advice..."be original and don't worry about how many tricks you do." That made me laugh. I often saw him do just four actual tricks in a 90 minute show. The rest was just Tom having fun with the audience.

I was in the club the night that Red Skelton walked in. Red watched the entire show and immediately after the show everyone was ushered out. I knew how much Red meant to Tom...everyone who ever watched the show knew that Tom Mullica was Red's biggest fan. I told them that I just wanted to be a fly on the wall and watch them talk. The manager told me "we all want to watch, but this is Tom's time". Right now I imagine them both sitting side by side and Red putting his arm around Tom's shoulder and telling him "Thanks for remembering...you done good".

My thoughts and prayers go out to Steve and the rest of Tom's family. Rest in Peace Tom. You will be missed.

More on Tom Mullica

Biography in MagicPedia

Tom enlisted in the Army at age 18, serving 3 years in Korea and Germany. After getting out of the Army he moved to Colon, Michigan, where he built illusions and demonstrated magic for Abbott's Magic Company. Tom then moved to Atlanta, Georgia where he attended bartending school and opened his own nightclub called The Tom-foolery Magic Bar Theatre which lasted from 1976 to 1987.

He has appeared on television many times including Late Night with David Letterman and World's Greatest Magic.

Red Skelton visited the Tom-foolery in 1980 and they became fast friends. He asked Red for his advice after wanted to move on and Red suggested that Tom take 10-15 minutes of his best material and perform it pantomime to music. He said he would be able to work any place in the world because there would be no language barrier. Tom took Red's advice and after six months of rehearsal moved to Paris, France where he worked at the world famous Crazy Horse Saloon.

Tom returned to the United States in 1991 and continued his comedy magic career. In 1996, he began writing RED SKELTON (A Performance Tribute) which he now performs in theaters throughout America and Canada.

Tom is also the CEO of Van Blaine Productions

3. Tom Mullica 1948 - 2016
--------------------------------------------
Article forward on by Mel Kientz (US)
UPDATE: The decision has been made to take Tom Mullica off life support at 5:00 pm Las Vegas time (Pacific).

Late this afternoon we received news that Tom Mullica is in serious condition. Recently he went into the hospital for a routine hernia operation and due to complications, blood clots formed and he had multiple strokes, organ failure and is now on dialysis for liver failure. Tom has been placed in an induced coma and according to some reports, it doesn't look like he will be going home.

Tom Mullica's love affair with show business began in 1953 in Waupun, Wisconsin when, as a five-year-old child, he decided to be a clown. Two years later he discovered magic and not long after combined the two. In addition to magic and clowning, he is a highly skilled ventriloquist and pantomimist.

After a stint in the Army, Tom moved to the magic capitol of the world, Colon, Michigan, where he built illusions and demonstrated magic for the famous Abbott's Magic Company.

Tom then moved to Atlanta, Georgia where he attended bartending school and opened his own nightclub called The Tom-foolery Magic Bar Theatre.

His popularity in Atlanta led to an appearance on Late Night with David Letterman, World's Greatest Magic, Penn & Teller, Viva Variety and hundreds of television appearances throughout the world. With countless hotel and casino performances in Atlantic City and Las Vegas, Tom Mullica remains one of the greatest variety acts of our time.

Between 1976 and 1987, the Tom-foolery was visited by countless notables -including a longtime favorite of Tom's, Red Skelton.

When Red visited the Tom-foolery in 1980, he liked the show so much he spent two hours with Tom afterwards. Tom occasionally included some suggestive material in his comedy routines at the time and Red proclaimed, "I'll tell you what Tom, if you clean up your act, you can use my material." He told Tom that his humor was too suggestive and that it shocked people into laughing. He instructed Tom to do every show as if his mother, a priest, and a nun were in the audience. Tom's approach to comedy changed that very night. A quiet, sincere friendship he developed with Red Skelton over the years that followed.

After 11 years performing at the Tom-foolery, Tom wanted to move on. He asked Red for his advice and he suggested, "Take 10-15 minutes of your best material and perform it pantomime to music and you'll be able to work any place in the world - you'll have no language barrier." Tom took Red's advice and after six months of rehearsal moved to Paris, France where he was one of the featured acts at the world famous Crazy Horse Saloon.

Of course, he still performed his incredible card magic throughout the world.

Tom returned to America in 1991 and continued his comedy magic career until 1996 when he began writing 'Tom Mullica as RED SKELTON - The Legend Continues', which was featured in theaters throughout America and Canada.

Last year Tom moved from Branson, Missouri to Las Vegas as he had decided to leave the Red Skelton show behind and return to magic full-time. In a recent interview Tom said, that he is ready to get back to his magic roots for his next career adventure. "But," he pointed out quickly, "I have given up my old cigarette routine, so don't look for it."

Tom survived a battle with leukemia in 2010 and he received a stem-cell transplant at that time.

4. Allan Slaight Awards - Open For Nominations!
--------------------------------------------
Message by Julie Eng (Canada)

Nominations open for Allan Slaight Awards with $50,000 in prize money

Nominations are now being accepted and we want to leave no double un-turned-over in our search for the most deserving recipients.

So we ask all of you to rack your brains and consider nominating a worthy individual for this year.

There are five categories and you can nominate one person per category. The categories are:

Sharing Wonder - This is awarded for performances for the public completed during 2015. This could be live performances or televised. It could be work which was widely received or work of exceptional quality (or preferably both!) The inaugural award, presented last year, went to Penn & Teller.

Sharing Secrets - This is for work for the magic community released in 2015. This can be anything instructional or historical from books to DVDs to downloadable content. Again we are looking for material which has been widely received and has had a meaningful impact. The first award in this category went to Mike Caveney.

The other three awards aren't 2015-specific and look at work spanning the individual's whole career: Lifetime Achievement, Rising Star - Canadian, and Rising Star - International. Inaugural winners were: Johnny Thompson for Lifetime Achievement; Mahdi Gilbert for Canadian Rising Star; and Henry Vargas of Brazil for International Rising Star.

Nominations are made online at http://www.magicana.com/slaight/ (scroll down to the Nominations link). After a submission is made, we reach out to the nominee so they have a chance to supplement whatever was said about them.

YES! You can nominate yourself and there is absolutely no penalty for doing so.

Now, we all know people who are deserving but are too modest to nominate themselves or ask someone else to do it for them, so this is your chance to do so for them! You can also make your nomination anonymously. Nominations need to be in by March 31.

Lastly, we'd greatly appreciate your help in spreading the word. Tweets, Facebook posts, personal messages, or email announcements are all a tremendous help. The page to direct people to ishttp://www.magicana.com/slaight.

5. March 2016 Issue Of Genii
--------------------------------------------
Message by Richard Kaufman
Editor of Genii, The Conjurors' Magazine

The March 2016 issue of Genii, the largest selling magic magazine in the world, is now winging its way to your mailbox and the digital edition is already live online.

Little known to most magicians, a special "Stars of Magic" issue of The Sphinx was prepared in 1951. It contains items from all of the original contributors up to that point, but today has been forgotten by most.
This month it's my pleasure as our cover story to reprint the whole 13-page article filled with great magic. I've added a film of Dai Vernon performing "The Cone and Ball" to go along with the description of his effect and a film of David Ben gallantly recreating Ross Bertram's "Squeeze Away Coin" after not having done it for 35 years! You'll also learn tricks from Vernon, Scarne, Slydini, Dr. Daley, Francis Carlyle, Emil Jarrow, and others.

Also this issue, Danny Orleans brings us the story of 10 years of Magic Chicago, the windy city's long-running venue of magic. Organized by Robert Charles and Benjamin Barnes, Magic Chicago has played host to numerous famous magicians and delighted audiences, and after you read about it you may wish to make that a stop on your next trip through Chicago. *

Our columnists this month are Kainoa Harbottle, who explains a lovely coin routine (and in less than 2,000 words!); David Kaye ponders the meaning of the first thumbtip and the millions that have followed in "The Expert at the Kids Table"; Dani DaOrtiz meditates on the psychology of The Third Time in "DaOrtiz ala Carte!"; Bob Read meanders through "Hidden Treasures" and tells the tale of the antique clock which remained unrepaired for two decades; In this month's "Left-Handed" Jeff Prace describes a pretty swift trick involving a winning lottery ticket and even provides the props for you to scan and print out; David Britland takes you back to Paul Curry's wonderful book Magician's Magic, written for the public in 1965, and which I fondly remember checking out of my local library when I was about 8 or 9 years old. There's a fine trick hidden in there, which Mr. Britland makes better in "Cardopolis"; in his "Chamber of Secrets" John Gaughan finds the intriguing "The I-II Die Box," the creation of Johann Hofzinser. We close it up with book reviews by John Guastaferro, trick reviews by Danny Orleans, and video reviews by Dustin Stinett; and Mike Perovich memorializes the late Jim Patton.

We have audio columns from Max Maven and Jon Racherbaumer, plus other videos to tease and tantalize you.

7. The Magic Word Podcast - Gregory Wilson Responds
--------------------------------------------
Message by Scott Wells, M.I.M.C. with Gold Star

This week on The Magic Word, Gregory Wilson is heading to Blackpool for one of the largest magic conventions in the world. But before he leaves, he wanted to leave a response to his accusers who have presented their evidence on recent podcasts. He wanted to present his proof and testimony to many of the accusations which he says are incomplete and/or false.

Greg responds to allegations of thievery of ideas and non-crediting of ideas he published in his DVD's and lectures. In particular, he tells his side of the stories that were presented by Apollo Robbins, Brent Geris, Cosmo Solano, John Lovick, Rob Zabrecky, Alex Rangel, and a few others. This will be the first of a two part series. He has not had time to listen to the podcast with John Lovick but will listen then address the issues point by point in an upcoming podcast following his return from Blackpool.

Greg's longtime friend and standup comic, Brad Stine, is also heard at the beginning of this podcast. He testifies to Greg finally making good on crediting him for ideas he contributed to a couple of Greg's releases. This edited portion from Brad was shortened from a much longer chat we had that covered a lot about comedy and the intersection of stand-up comedy and magic. Perhaps we will post that discussion at some future date.

You can watch a video of Brad Stine's comedy routine, see some photos, read the blog, listen to the podcast, and download the MP3 file at: http://themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/277-gregory-wilson-returns-part-one

If you enjoy the podcast, then please support us with your financial pledge. You can become a Friend of The Magic Word with a donation or monthly pledge of any amount even as small as one dollar. All support is appreciated and recognized with a shout-out on a podcast, a listing of your name on the website "Hall of Fame" plus you are sent a Certificate, suitable for framing. 8. "Reading" A Child - #391 - Kyle Peron
--------------------------------------------
Message by Kyle Peron (US)
magic4u02@aol.com
http://www.kylekellymagic.com
http://www.kpmagicproducts.com

As much as we would like to believe, we do not always pick the most perfect child helper. Maybe your track record is pretty good, but as good as you are at reading a child, you can never be sure how that child will react once on stage with you. That once polite and cute kid can instantly turn into "cujo" or the "devil's spawn." once they arrive on stage to assist you.

We all have experienced this and I hope each time you learn to deal with it in the best and most proper way. As a professional, I must learn to handle situation like this and I must learn to be bigger than the problem at hand. Simply enough that means if I am a professional, then I should have the ability to handle situations and problems in such a way that I remain in character and still continue to do my job.....entertain the audience.

In many cases a child's attitude and personality can change so drastic enough that it is quite obvious to you. You know instantly that you had made a bad choice and it is obvious to you that you may need to switch gears a little in order to get through the routine you have planned.

However, too often performers do not see the warning signs that kids can and do give to you. Not always does a child change so drastic that you easily see it. In many cases a child's attitude and emotions can change gradually in the process of a routine. You may not always see it if you are not accustomed to learning to "read the child."

Because I am a deaf entertainer, I read lips all the time. I must do so if I am able to hear people and communicate with them. Because of this, I am constantly looking at and scanning my helpers. Learning to read a child is an important skill but it requires first the ability to see and to notice small things before they become bigger problems.

Make sure to pay attention to a child and pay attention to what they do, say and how they act. Sometimes little signs show up that you can easily start to notice.

For example, a bad situation is when you have a helper on stage and the helper becomes shy or, worse yet, starts to cry on stage. There are warnings signs you can easily start to pick up the minute you select a child. The first thing you must realize is that a child in their seat can be vastly different then the child on stage with you. In their seat they are comfortable, relaxed and among friends.

When a child in on stage with you, they are in the spotlight, standing next to a big adult with all of their friends staring at them. They may not have any idea what you are going to do and they may fear being embarrassed. This can easily change a child's personality or mood and you must be tuned to seeing the change if it happens.

So what are some of the signs that a child may be shy, nervous or heading down the road to shutting off on you?

- The head starts to come down towards the chin instead of being held up high
- The shoulders come in and they hunch over
- They usually will try and avoid eye contact with you
- The voice becomes softer and the responses are shorter
- The hands may go into the pockets or they may hold their hands together close to their waist
- They may also back up close to your table or a prop as a way of "hiding" or "protecting" themselves"
- If you approach them, they may back away slowly or avoid approaching you

Now these may seem obvious. However, many times these signs are subtle. In many ways you may be so focused on your routine that you simply fail to see any of these happening before it is too late. Learn to study these signs and others. Pay attention to your helper and start to read them the minute they are selected.

The key is to notice these signs before it becomes a bigger issue. In the above instance, the signs tell me the child may be scared, nervous or unsure of the situation. If I let it go, the child could shut off and not interact or could start to cry on stage. It does happen.

If I see a warning sign, I can immediately change my routine or how I go about it. A professional should be one who knows how to adapt to any situation. If I see one of the signs above, I might do one of the following:

- Empower the child by allowing the audience to applaud just for him or her. I build their confidence up and the clapping makes them the star of the moment and the applause shows that the audience is on their side.

- Instead of doing a patter line (or part of the routine that gets me a laugh from something the child does) I may change it around so the laugh is totally on me. For example, a breakaway wand would not be given to this child but instead he gets it right every time while I am the one that it breaks on.

- Get the child to laugh. Laughter is indeed the best medicine and it is a great way to get a child to open up.

- Allow them to do the magic. Instead of you being the magician, allow the child to be the one that makes the magic work. You act amazed at their magical ability and all the credit goes to them.

Now there are more warning signs and certainly more ways you can handle it. However, I hope that these few listed here get you thinking more. We need to learn to read a helper and to see signs early on. We must be willing to adapt our routine if we see a helper headed down the wrong path and apply some of these methods to make that child feel special.

If I am a professional, then I must treat every helper as a guest in my own home. I never want a guest to feel uncomfortable and I always want them leaving knowing they had a great time.

As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your thoughts. So if you have any thoughts on my articles or suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly at magic4u02@aol.com. I would love to hear from you.

13. Haversat & Ewing Galleries, LLC - Auction
--------------------------------------------
Houdini Auction & More
March 23-24, 2016

On March 24, 1874, Erich Weiss was born in Budapest to humble beginnings. Eventually he rose to fame and fortune as Harry Houdini the world renowned escape artist who "laughed at locksmiths." He also recognized the importance of collecting and preserving the history of conjuring. So, in honor of his 142nd birthday, Haversat & Ewing Galleries have assembled an Aladdin's chest of choice magic memorabilia from our nation's leading collectors which we will offer beginning March 23 and ending a day later on Houdini's birthday.

In this auction we offer you the files and posters of the late Roy Snyder, Past National President of the Society of American Magicians. Snyder passed away in 2015, after a lifetime in the entertainment business booking acts for S.A.M. national conventions and for the Keswick Theatre in Philadelphia. Snyder was close friends with photographer Irving Desfor and throughout his life Snyder purchased live-action photographs of magic's most famous personalities.

This is an opportunity to get photos of Blackstone, Gwynne, Richiardi, Hugard, Mulholland, Kio, Dante, Vernon, Cardini and dozens of others. These photo files are often accompanied by programs, clippings, letters and supporting memorabilia. One unique lot from the Snyder collection is the contract between Kellar and Thurston.

One of the leading magic collectors and historians was the late Milbourne Christopher. He began auctioning his collection while alive and his wife Maurine continued that after his passing. Even though the majority of the collection was sold prior to her death in 2013, Maurine made previsions in her will for a number of special pieces to benefit the Christopher Foundation. Haversat and Ewing have been authorized by Christopher's legal representatives to offer these magic items for auction. The proceeds of the Christopher lots will go to support the Milbourne Christopher Foundation which annually recognizes the best and brightest talent in magic.

The remainder of the auction is comprised of choice conjuring memorabilia from a dozen of the nation's leading historians and collectors including very rare selections from the token collection of Randy Forgaard. You will delight at such rarities as a hand-made Christmas card by David Devant, John Mulholland's S.A.M. membership card signed by Houdini, a rare autographed Malini program, Fu Manchu broadsides and flyers, J.H. Anderson program, memorabilia of Alexander and Adelaide Herrmann and much more. We hope you enjoy the selection we've assembled and of course, welcome the opportunity to bring your items to auction. Thanks for your patronage and friendship.
