3. The Academy of Magical Arts - 48th Annual Magic Awards
--------------------------------------------
Hollywood's Most Magical Night (Literally)! May 15, 2016. Tickets go on sale Monday.

The Academy of Magical Arts Presents 48th Annual Magic Awards, hosted by celebrated conjurer and comedian Derek Hughes with Dynamo to be honored as Magician of the Year.

In a town that is globally renowned for "magical" award galas, there is truly only one… The Academy of Magical Arts (AMA) will hold its 48th annual AMA Awards Show, May 15 at the historic Saban Theatre, 8440 Wilshire Blvd., Beverly Hills. A post-show party will be held at the world-famous Magic Castle in Hollywood.

This star-studded award show - attended and featuring performances by many of magic's best-known performers from around the globe - will be hosted by celebrated conjurer, "Standup Magician" Derek Hughes, whose live performances have been lauded by audiences and critics alike, with the New York Times calling him "thoroughly entertaining." Hughes has been featured as a guest on Penn & Teller: Fool Us, as a celebrity magic coach on the VH1 reality series Celfbracadabra and has been seen in such feature films as Mr. Deeds, starring Adam Sandler, and on such hit television series as CSI: NY and Tosh.O. He is a creative producer on TRUtv's hit magic series, The Carbonaro Effect, and was a top-10 finalist on the most-recent season of America's Got Talent.

Being honored as Magician of the Year is illusionist Dynamo (Steven Frayne). Taking a break from his sold-out arena tour to accept a coveted Magic Wand Award, this British phenomenon is one of the most influential magicians of a generation, known for his award-winning TV series, Dynamo: Magician Impossible (which has been seen in 180 countries); his bestselling biography, Nothing is Impossible; and a variety of high-profile appearances on stage and television. He is famed for his "impossible" illusions… Walking on water or through glass; levitating in mid-air alongside a London bus or atop a giant glass shard; swallowing jewelry and pulling it through his stomach; and other astonishing trickery.

Other noted magicians will be honored for their extraordinary accomplishments in a variety of award categories. Tickets go on sale March 21 and can be purchased at SabanTheatre.org.

6. Broken Wand Eric Sharp
--------------------------------------------
Message by Quentin Reynolds

Eric Sharp R.I.P.

Today I lost my magical father, Eric Sharp, just a couple of months short of his 95th birthday.

After returning from WW2 and marrying Muriel, the love of his life, they moved to South Wales where they ran a few small businesses including a Fish & Chip shop and a removal business. But there was a lot of work available in the working men's clubs, where, as part of a concert party, Eric did comedy magic.

In the late 1950's he met Rex Daina, a retired professional magician who taught Eric Punch & Judy and for the next seven years he was the resident Punch man at Coney Beach, Porthcawl, then the largest caravan site in Europe. After that until 1973 he and Muriel, along with their son Brian, ran two cinemas in Coney Beach, showing the latest films as well as doing morning matinee magic shows.

In 1975 Eric taught me Punch & Judy, and his theories on entertaining children. Being highly opinionated and often controversial, he wondered if his ideas would work for others. Indeed they did and it wasn't long before I was earning a living as a full time professional. He since taught others, the latest being Matthew Powell and Colin Lanfear.

Eric published a series of books on Specialised Children's Entertainment, detailing his original routines and scripts. He had a knack of taking a trick disregarded by magicians and turning it into a hilarious and engaging performance piece.

In 2014, at Kidology, he received a Lifetime Achievement Award for his work in the field of children's entertainment.

His wife, Muriel passed away three years ago and last September, Eric, with macular degeneration of his vision was hospitalised with a number of complaints and passed away today at The Royal Glamorgan Hospital.

As a children's performer, how often do we get lost in the business of what we do? How many times do we worry about the hyper kid or the parent who doesn't care? How many times do we each call in a show simply because we are worried about the trip home or the bills that have to be paid?

If we are honest with each other, the answer is probably that it does happen. Maybe not all the time, but we are only human. We fall into these "traps" regardless of what we do.

We forget what it means to be a children's entertainer. We forget the joy that we felt as a child watching magic happen in front of us. We forget the amazed feelings we had seeing something appear from nowhere. We lose track of the amount of times we tried to make the magic happen ourselves yet had no real clue how to do it.

I recently had a rude awakening at a gig that brought all of this back to my mind again. I was doing strolling magic and this little 4 year old boy was crying. I may never know why, but he was not having a good time at all.

I started doing some ball manipulations to the music the DJ was playing. I was not paying much attention but out of the corner of my eye I see the child inch closer and the tears start to dry up. I started making the ball appear under my hat and a smile formed on this kid's face.

For 5 minutes this child watched me as if magic to him was something TRULY special. He stopped crying and was transfixed into everything he was seeing me do. His laughter made me laugh. His smile made me smile. His mother could not believe just how engulfed her son was in what I was doing.

Now I do not share this here as an ego thing. Instead I share it because for those 5 minutes I saw magic through the eyes of a child. I saw magic the way I remember seeing it so many years ago. I remembered what it was like to just totally believe in magic and to just allow oneself to be 'Entertained". No more and no less...to be entertained and not only fooled.

Through this child's own eyes, I got to feel like a kid again. But most of all, I got to remember the POWER each children's magician has inside of us. We have this ability we often take for granted.

We have the ability to make a child smile and laugh and forget about things even for just a few moments. We are often times the very first live magician that child may have ever seen. It is our duty and our JOB to never allow ourselves to give anything less than 100% effort every time out.

We must remind ourselves to see magic through the eyes of a child. We must remind ourselves of the joy magic can bring to a young one and how we can shape how that child views magicians from that day forward.

I may never know what will become of that child I saw that day. However, I do know that through his eyes, I saw magic again the way I first felt when I was his age. I remembered what being a children's performer is all about.

As much as his mother thanked me, I should be thanking him for allowing me to realize just how wonderful it is to do what we do.

8. The April Issue of Genii is Here!
--------------------------------------------
Message by Richard Kaufman Editor of Genii, The Conjurors' Magazine

I can't remember the last time so many friends died in so little time: Jerry Mentzer, Jim Patton, Tom Mullica, Irene Larsen, J.C. Doty, Tihany, and the great Paul Daniels. I just heard that Pat Lyons (artist and wife of the late P. Howard Lyons), died from lung cancer.

This issue is one of remembrance. If there was a person more beloved in the world of magic than Irene Larsen I can't imagine who it is. In a feature-length story, Irene Larsen is remembered by Dustin Stinett, Max Maven, Jim Steinmeyer, and her daughter Erika and granddaughter Liberty.

Tom Mullica's death was apparently the result of ineptitude on the part of a doctor during what should have been a routine hernia operation. He told me he was 68 when we talked at the Genii Convention last October even though his death is being reported as age 67. His close-up performance at the Genii convention last October was so good that you'd never know he hadn't done a set of magic like that in many years. Hilarity and a standing ovation. He was all smiles. Our article on Tom has been written by his friend, and ours, Jon Racherbaumer. We also have many great videos of Tom performing in our digital edition.

We also have obituaries on my old friend J.C. Doty, builder of Mullica's Tom-Foolery Bar, and whose wife Mary made the most heavenly cornbread on the planet, by Joe. M Turner, and Tihany, the 99-year old master showman from Lupe Nielsen and Joaquin Ayala.

And yet our publication continues, as it must. The world turns and we hang on. Our columnists this month include Jim Steinmeyer's brand new take on a platform version of "The Money Maker; Helder Guimaraes pulls some "Invisible Strings" to demonstrate visual versus the non-visual card magic (with two videos); "The Tray of Proteus" sounds so much more exotic than the metal coin tray it actually is, but John Gaughan reveals its hidden attributes in his "Chamber of Secrets"; "Eugene's Notebook" deals with the soft side of the performance of magic (with video); Max Maven divines thought-of names in "Lost Horizons" (and has his audio column "Speaking of Max" in addition; Jonathan Pendragon reveals his entirely safe way of performing "Stigmata"-what has come to be known as "Smash and Stab"-in "Panmagium": We have two routines this month in "Magicana," from Lewis Jones and Jonathan Friedman (with video); with "Lodestones" Tom Stone reveals an entirely new way of secretly depositing final loads while standing, away from a table, and without pockets-I'm quite taken with it and the video will fry you; Daniel Ulin brings us the latest goings on in the Academy of Magic Arts in "Knights at The Magic Castle" (and don't forget that if you're not a member of the AMA, but are a Genii subscriber, you are entitled to visit the grand home of magic each year). We end our 112 pages with reviews of the latest tricks by David Regal, videos by I.B.M. President Joe M. Turner, and books from David Britland.

Spring is halfway here already; I'll see you next month when the flowers will be busting out all over.

10. The Magic Word Podcast - Fun with Farrell Dillon
--------------------------------------------
Message by Scott Wells, M.I.M. C. with Gold Star

You may have seen Farrell Dillon on TV in "Masters of Illusion" or perhaps on their international stage tour, or you may have seen a rare performance by Farrell at a magic convention. But if the name is otherwise unfamiliar to you, then this week's podcast will introduce you to this comedic, international magician.

While I was recently visiting South Lake Tahoe, California, I visited the newest magic venue "The Loft at Heavenly Village" where last week we featured a chat with the talent and producer of "Magic Fusion", Tony Clark. Well, when Tony left for Los Angeles, he was replaced with Farrell Dillon for the next several weeks. I had a chance to sit with him in the stairwell of the building after the show. Why a stairwell? Well, believe it or not, it was the most quiet place in the area.

Farrell talks about working in the touring theater show and gives us lots of tips and interesting stories. 11. Pat Lyons (Patterson) Died Peacefully
--------------------------------------------
Message by James Alan

Magicana is sad to report the passing of famed magic illustrator Pat Lyons (aka Pat Patterson) due to complications from lung cancer. She died peacefully in hospice last evening.

Pat, along with her husband, the late P. Howard Lyons were responsible for Ibidem magazine, one of the most ground-breaking magic publications of the 20th century. Her puzzle, The Vanishing Leprechaun, remains one of the most pirated designs of this genre.

Pat loved jazz and science fiction, and, if it was performed well, magic.

In the last number of years, she has had a close association with David Ben and had a hand providing illustrations for several of his publications and projects. Pat was also a huge supporter of Magicana. For more information about Pat as an illustrator please see Chuck Romano's, The Art of Deception.

As per her wishes, donations can be made to Magicana or to the Kensington Hospice where she received extraordinary care and support in her final weeks.

A celebration of Pat's life and work will be hosted in Toronto sometime in April. Details will be posted as they become available.

Thank you Pat, for all that you did, and continue to do, for us through your generosity.

14. South Tyneside Magic Festival 2016
--------------------------------------------
Message by Mandy Davis (UK)

Part 1

This convention, which takes place in South Shields, is organised and well supported by the local Council in conjunction with nearby magic dealer, Magic Box. Karri Prinn and John Archer collaborated to fill this year's programme and did an excellent job of it.

This thirteenth year opened, like previous ones, with a high energy, sometimes manic, show from a top UK Children's Entertainer, Colonel Custard (Paul Megram) who entertained around 200 excited children. Highlights, from talking to some of the delegates, were the Coke Can Russian Roulette and toilet paper sent out across the audience by a leaf blower!

After the children left, everyone else moved down to enjoy Paul's explanations and wisdom concerning what he'd performed, including the leaf blower - although he didn't explain the Coke Can Roulette as this was an effect by Sean Hayden.

Paul talked about his toolbox that often gets him out of trouble, even in the biggest venues. He continued by sharing an Ipad app that organises his sound cues and delivers them very accurately as and when needed. He also invested in a remote that can be used on Christmas tree lights or lamps in a client's home.

Paul discussed party bags, his Ring in Nested Dolls trick, the construction of his leaf blower and coping with cancellations before closing with Nick Einhorn's In-Flight levitation. This lecture had some unique ideas and great thoughts on keeping your act fresh.

Ken Dyne, or Kennedy, had a unique twist on the old Heads & Tails game, turning it into a prediction. He followed with a stage sized word divination with a cunning format and then his own version of the balls in the bag effect with a golden ball found among several differently coloured ones. This was a lecture with some simple but very effective thoughts that could be easily added to improve all kinds of tricks and stage items.

Peter Clifford is an actor, director and magician whose lecture on stagecraft was a highlight for me.
As magicians we get so little of this kind of thing - we need to lap it up in order to improve.
He covered voice production, with us all standing and making various sounds and facial expressions; he continued with movement on stage, handling volunteers, forming character and the 'whys' of what you perform. He advocated scripting and told us a few of his failures as well as his success stories. The whole lecture was a 'must-see' and was some of the most valuable information the weekend produced for the working professionals.

Will Houston's lecture showcased his charm and wonderful dry wit which was greatly appreciated by those who attended. I didn't make it to this lecture but he covered Coin 0.5 - his Two Coins Across trick, Shadow Coins, a super-clean four Ace assembly and his signature trick where two decks end up in exactly the same random order.

The Friday night had a gala show which was not over long but highly appreciated. Danny Buckler was the compere/MC and stirred up the audience by winning them over with disparaging remarks about the town! Danny's rants became highlights of the Friday night!

The first act was Chad Long, a crazy force who never stops moving or performing on or off stage! He started with some fire torches that he positively dowsed in petrol - then was unable to set fire to them due to a lack of ability to strike either lighter or matches! His broken and restored spaghetti was very funny indeed and his gags and, literally, off-the-wall card appearances had the audience both giggling and amazed. He continued with some card foolery and ended with cards changing values before our eyes!

Steve Rawlings, quiet and unassuming off stage, is a crazy and manic personality when performing his juggling act. From balancing table, chair and a vase of flowers he moved on to plates and then balls which he juggled in his mouth! This was followed by lots of fire and comedy with a tray of wine glasses and bottles. The act was fast and furious, loud and haphazard but very controlled when you realise that Steve is actually doing the things he has attempted - a superior juggling act indeed!

Danny Buckler found himself filling in with some rope magic as Steve had drenched the stage but soon it was ready for the elegant Malin Nilsson, one of Sweden's best magical entertainers. She performed some very different Linking Ring moves to some great jazz piano and juggled both rings and her hat, with a flurry of snowflakes thrown into the air to point certain climaxes in the routine. A change of tempo and a tiny cloth rabbit appeared from her hat which turned out to be a length of wrapped rope. Some clever rope ideas followed, all very slowly and carefully done; then a little juggling of the rope rabbit, a wand and her hat ended with everything back in its place.

Men in Coats has always been a favourite act of mine. They are still slick and fun, inventive and different. From spoof juggling to a hat from a rabbit (!) to superhero impressions and shrinking and growing bodies, this was a fast paced silent act that had some clever but age old moves and humour, yet with a very modern feel.

John Archer's dance moves entrance to Meghan Traynor's All About the Bass set the tone for his very funny act. He played his ukelele of course, a song with a groaning punchline, then spoke about Uri Geller for a while. As always, John made the journey of being blindfolded into a total routine of its own before he even got to do any magic which was secondary to the huge laughs and by-play with his volunteers. The effect was a psycho psychometry style divination of drawings on three cards - in case you wanted to know that!

Malin Nillson closed the show with a yellow silk mystery and some appearing and disappearing tea diffusers at her fingertips. This was performed sitting at a table in a spotlight. She then invited Danny to help her and she removed her jacket to produce two glasses and a bottle of wine. Some bubble blowing followed and she and Danny were able to pluck glass bubbles from the air, all very nicely done indeed and with a surprise ending.

That was the first show of the weekend and one of the best I have ever enjoyed!

But the evening was not yet over!

A bus took the majority of delegates to the Headquarters hotel where a late late show was waiting for us, complete with a buffet for those who wanted to eat.

Danny Buckler's style is 'rant' and he does it so very well. Nothing was sacred - from his own youth to Bobby Bernard, to Dynamo, Phantom of the Opera and the location of the dealers' hall. All were mulled over and lambasted in equal measure - it was funny, witty and so so unique.

Phil Butler opened with a rock version of a children's song and then some fantastic comedy using the voice activation, Siri, on his iPhone. Phil's unique comedy ideas kept the audience buzzing with laughter throughout. Juggling with a cigarette and his top lip, borrowing a note and burning it, a crazy ventriloquist alphabet, rude words from musical toys and a whole lot of sidesplitting lines had the late night audience rocking from beginning to end.

What a fabulous first day!

Saturday - Day 2

Both Andi Gladwin and John Carney gave excellent lectures at the start of the second day. The great plus of this convention is that, although packed, the delegates can get to see everything on the schedule if they so wish.

For me, my day began with Will Houston's lecture on Conjuring Curiosities and it was a very well thought-out and delivered piece, illustrated with many photos and film clips

He spoke about his work, with Paul Kieve, on the movie Hugo - a fictional story set in Paris and incorporating the work of early film special effects pioneer, Georges Melies. Will taught Ben Kingsley to look as if he'd been doing magic for years, not an easy feat; he researched Robert-Houdin and Hoffman to get the feel for the tricks of the time and ended up using a rising card effect as well as an ethereal suspension albeit with unconventional methodology! Will ended by showing a film about Breathe! - The work they do to help children, attending the psychiatric unit of Great Ormond Street Hospital, to learn magic as a therapy.

The Close Up show was held in the small cinema and enabled good sight lines as well as a huge screen behind the performers. Michael Vincent proved himself to be the Master of moves, shuffles, Triumphs and all kinds of eloquent card magic, using two decks on occasions, as he produced Aces and cards at any number.

John Carney worked with three small white balls which disappeared and reappeared with a well-heard clink as they landed in the large glass bowl he held. He then introduced John Ramsey's classic routine with a small cork, a leather cylinder and some silver dollars. Some fun with a hat and a flea followed before John ended with a chop cup routine using a small ball, a tumbler wrapped in paper and a hat which was very well executed all the way to the final loads.

Paul Wilson opened with a Find the Lady routine, then a selected and signed card had holes punched in it, all eventually moving to the same corner. Four Aces appeared from a very well shuffled deck, then Paul dealt some poker hands, with all the Aces converging to the one he'd dealt for himself.

Chad Long, our last performer, just blew the audience away with gales of laughter and amazing magic with cards and coins. To list the effects - Coin Matrix, Ambitious Card, Card to Wallet etc. - does not do justice to the manic hilarity and skill that makes up Chad's never ending repertoire.

I caught the end of the following lecture in which Michael Vincent included a triumph-style trick utilising some Pot Noodle containers; a good explanation on swapping cards held by the spectator; and an informative PowerPoint presentation demonstrating Michael's goals in magic which he was happy to share with us. As always Michael's deeply thought-out explanations and teaching style were highly appreciated.

Rafael gave the last lecture of the day and it was great fun. A card trick which involved a second deal was followed by a scam where an envelope chosen at random proved to contain 'a drink', whereas the rest of the envelopes had monetary rewards - an ingenious method, very reminiscent of Rafael's mentor, the late Ali Bongo.

Rafael had some great lessons to teach us and excellent advice:

Ask four questions of yourself - Who am I? What am I doing? Am I believable? Am I a comedy performer?

He suggested taking a routine and changing something in it such as colour or design. He demonstrated this with an old coin wand and explained how he had changed this to a pair of chopsticks that produced a coin instead; he adapted a Miser's Dream bucket so the sound is louder as the coins drop; he also showed us a pair of scissors that became spectacles and many other clever examples. He ended by dedicating his lecture to Ali Bongo who had inspired him so much and showing his own version of the PomPom Sticks.

Part 2 next week
