4. The Magic Word Podcast: I'm Just Sayin' - Norman Beck
--------------------------------------------
Message by Scott Wells, M.I.M.C. with Gold Star

Norman Beck has been a contributing editor to M.U.M for many years with his "home spun" philosophy of magic and his opinions on so many things that touch our magical world. And he is also a very adept magician who is well-known card guy in the magic underground. But he is so much more than that.

He is a world class bridge player, an underwriter for betting on wild events, a former restaurant performer, and recently he has survived a major operation extracting a baseball sized brain tumor.

This week on The Magic Word, Norm tells us a lot of stories and gives us some advice on restaurants, getting tips, approaching the table, performing for Bill Gates and Warren Buffet, and some of the crazy things that his company has underwritten like finding Bigfoot, guessing the number of clown noses in a car…and more.

You can read the blog, see some photos, hear the podcast online and download the MP3 file at: http://themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/286-norman-beck And of course you can subscribe to the RSS feed so you don't miss another podcast. You can get the podcasts from iTunes, Stitcher, Feedpress and Tunein.

Next week I'll be traveling to New York for the annual Fechter's Finger Flicking Frolic. Be sure to tune in for daily updates and conversations with some of the most influential close-up performers in the world today. And if you enjoy the podcast, then please consider supporting us with your donation. More info at: http://themagicwordpodcast.com/fotmw/

6. Conveying and Using Personality - #396 - Kyle Peron
--------------------------------------------
Message by Kyle Peron
magic4u02@aol.com
http://www.kpmagicproducts.com

I posted recently on Facebook asking a simple question. What is one of the best qualities or traits you feel makes for a good magician and why? It was an interesting discussion that brought about a lot of great answers and opinions. However, one item kept coming up by many people. It is a single word called "personality". It was so great seeing so many folks give value to personality over other things.

I really think personality is so underrated in magic today. People just simply forget the power it has in everything we do. A trick is just a trick. The people want to like you. If you take the same trick and place it in the hands of someone who has and conveys personality and then someone who does not, it looks like a totally different effect to a lay audience. It really is that stunning to see happen.

Tricks alone do not really mean anything by themselves. A trick will not happen or work without the magician. Place a deck of cards on a table and they are not going to start doing an ACR routine by themselves. If they do, then start to run real quick. It is YOU that makes the difference and it is YOU that makes the magic happen. If this is the case, then focus should be on you and not the prop or trick you are presenting.

But what is it about you? It is your personality that really makes the audience enjoy the experience and enjoy you in the process.

I honestly feel that people want to be entertained way more than they want to be fooled. People want to walk away having had fun with the experience of what they just saw happen. Take some of the best acts out there today. Take a look at the ones that you really love to watch perform. It is safe to say that you enjoy them because 95% of their act is not solely based on the magic alone. There is more to what they provide isn't there? The good entertainers are that way because a majority of their act is interacting with the audience in a comical entertaining way, engaging, dialogue, connecting, talking. It is the essence of their personality that makes you enjoy what they do.

It is interaction and expressing personality. It is taking the audience on a journey and getting them laughing and having fun instead of just seeking the WOW only.

I think that is key. If you could take away the trick in any performance, and safely say the routine is still entertaining, then I think you have something. Take away the props and the trick and then look at what that performer does. I can safely say the entertainers that "get it" are the ones who without any of these props, can still entertain and audience and have them enjoying every minute of it. This is the essence and importance of personality in magic.

There is a quote that was shared to be by my good friend Dan Birch. Dan said the quote goes like this. "If they walk away saying remember the trick that the magician did, then I have failed. But if they say remember the magician who did that trick, then I have succeeded." I was so glad Dan shared this with me because it got me thinking that it is your personality that makes them remember you.

I think that is a key to developing a likeable character. Some magicians try to focus so much on the trick only that they are void of any personality at all. I want the audience remembering me not my deck of cards.

No one is saying not to have the tricks. What we are saying is that the focus of any performance should not be on the trick itself. The trick is just a prop. The focus should be on personality and using that personality to truly take the effect to an entertaining level. It is giving the audience more to enjoy. You add personality into what you do and I guarantee your audiences will thank you for it.

As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your thoughts. So if you have any thoughts on my articles or suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly at magic4u02@aol.com. I would love to hear from you.

7. May Issue of Genii Is Now Live Online And In The Mail!
--------------------------------------------
Message by Richard Kaufman
Editor, Genii, The Conjurors' Magazine

We have an amazing treat for you this month. "H?kasen" is one of the oldest books and most rare books on conjuring in Japan. Fewer than 20 copies probably exist. We are pleased to present the entire book, translated by Dan Sherer, in this issue, with all of its original artwork. Published in 1764, H?kasen contains detailed descriptions of the Cups And Balls, Linking Rings, Sands of the Dessert, magic with small balls, various rope and knot effects, including the eating of solid iron (!) among other odd stunts, as well as ways to produce various spooky ghosts - sometimes known as bakemono - on summer evenings. As a 250-year-old relic, H?kasen makes for fascinating reading.

We've got three videos in our digital edition of the late Maki Kitami performing Wazuma, the ancient Japanese style of magic. These are not here because he is performing effects from H?kasen, but more for flavor of the period. Ancient Japanese magic has an entirely different rhythm and style than western magic.

We knew that Paul Daniels had been diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor in late February after a fall in his home. He died less than a month later on March 17 at age 77. I knew him for many years, and had spent much time with him at the Masters of Magic Convention in St. Vincent, Italy, three years ago. Even though a man of no small ego, he was extremely kind and generous to his friends and fans and certainly gave more than he received in his later years. And he was a real pro - someone you could watch on stage rolling with the unexpected and turning it into something very funny. He is remembered by his friend Barry Murray on p.54.

I'm pleased to introduce two additions to Genii. The first is columnist Harrison Greenbaum, who'll make you laugh until you are gasping for breath at the next Genii convention in October 2017. His column is called "You Are All Terrible" and he's writing about comedy and magic (both of which he knows a lot about) every other month starting this issue.

The second new addition is a monthly section with the retro title, "The Eye." Of course Genii has had a news section before, the well-known "Bagdad" column ran for decades. But there was a time when I felt the internet made the idea of a news column in a printed magazine redundant and so "Bagdad" faded away even before the now-problematic negative connotations of its title. After 17 years of reflection on the issue (a new record, I assure you), I decided that there are enough interesting titbits of news floating around which you might not otherwise run across, and so I have created "The Eye." Our correspondent is Todd Karr. It's filled with hotlinks to the media and various internet sites.

Despite the staggering 34-page article on H?kasen, and the new column from Harrison Greenbaum, and the debut of "The Eye," we still have many of your favorite columnists in this issue:

Jeff Prace magically improves one of his previous miracles in "Left-Handed" (with video); Kainoa Harbottle shakes his Okito Box in "By Means of Metal" (with video); David Kaye decides that performing kids shows is like flying a plane in "The Expert at the Kids' Table"; John Gaughan shows off the craziest vent head I've ever seen in "Chamber of Secrets"; Andi Gladwin throws three great tricks your way in "Magicana" (with video); Daniel Ulin celebrates life in Southern California in "Knights at The Magic Castle"; Dustin Stinett reviews videos, David Oliver reviews tricks, and Kainoa Harbottle reviews books. And of course we have the regular audio columns from Max Maven and Jon Racherbaumer.

Sunday, April 24 at 2:00 p.m.
McNally Robinson, 1120 Grant Avenue

You are invited to join Dean and award winning author, Carolyn Gray, as they launch a book that takes readers inside the life of the "World's Most Daring Escape Artist". Guests will have an opportunity to meet Dean and ask him questions. Mark your calendars for Sunday, April 24 at 2:00 p.m. at McNally Robinson in Grant Park Mall, Winnipeg, MB

About the Book

Dean Gunnarson: The Making of an Escape Artist is a beautiful and magically
written story that takes an inside look at how dealing with the challenges, pain, and life threatening obstacles of having Leukemia at 12 years old helped shape Dean
to becoming the modern day daredevil that he is today.

It also tells the story of how a teenage Dean meets another young friend who was battling cancer named Phil Hornan. The two of them set out on an epic adventure of escaping from R.C.M.P. detachments across Manitoba. As they learn to escape from handcuffs, straight jackets, and jail cells, they soon face their toughest challenge; escaping from Stony Mountain Penitentiary.

Somehow they always find a way to achieve the impossible and escape their maximum security restraints. As Philip's cancer becomes incurable they look for a miracle in searching out psychics and faith healers. Even the legendary magician Doug Henning becomes friends with Phil and tries to find a magic way to help save his life. Sadly, Philip losses his fight with cancer at the age of 15.

This year marks the 30th anniversary of his passing. Shortly after Phil's death all the dreams and hopes that the two teenagers had planned start to materialize for Dean and he gets to perform on the biggest stage of his life, on live TV in Los Angles in front of millions of people. Then two decades later Phil comes back into Dean's life and gives him one last gift that changes his life forever.
