2. Can Magic be Declared an Art?
With the introduction of HR 642 to the US Congress this
year, the craft of conjuring just might become legally acknowledged
as "a rare and valuable art form." If passed,
what does that mean for the magic community?

Chris Funk was in mid-trick when he heard and felt something

his magic, but in his outlook on life.

7. Is Your Logo Working For You? - #397 - Kyle Peron
--------------------------------------------
Message by Kyle Peron
magic4u02@aol.com
http://www.kpmagicproducts.com
Many of you use a logo and may understand the importance
of it as a weapon in your marketing tool box. But you may
not know that the quality of your logo can mean the difference
between success and failure of your magic marketing. It
really can be that simple.
Logos
make up the most recognizable and international language
in all the world. Like magic, a good logo can be understood
by most any culture or language no matter what country you
live in. A good logo will communicate exactly what that
company or product is all about and it will do this in a
matter of seconds. We call this brand mark recognition.
For
example: If you simply see the wavy swatch of the coke logo,
you will immediately know it is Coke and that is a quality
drink that quenches your thirst. You will recognize it even
without the word Coke or Coca-cola even being there. Another
good example of this is the Nike symbol. This is a logo
that is recognized the world over as quality athletic products.
You simply see the swoosh and know immediately what it stands
for and what they are all about.
Good
quality logos do this easily because they can cross many
barriers and provide your magical service with a means of
delivering to your customers a uniform message every single
time. But, your logo must be a lot more then just a pretty
mark on a piece of paper. Having the logo look good is not
enough if it does not help represent your services to your
intended market.
Keep
in mind that often times your logo is the first impression
a client may get of you and the services you want to provide
to them. With this in mind, your logo needs to show professionalism,
quality and value. Your logo should try and meet the following
criteria: - Does your logo identify you and your services
to your intended market? Does it show your market exactly
what magical services you are providing and offering to
them? - Does your logo distinguish you from others with
similar services within your marketplace? Does it help you
stand out from the crowd and show professionalism and quality?
- Does your logo show to your customers the quality of service
you provide to them? - When people see your logo, can they
tell you provide a quality product simply because your logo
mark shows that same quality and thinking?
Remember
that your logo is a big part of your overall image. If your
logo does not do some of these things that I mentioned above,
then it is only working against you and your overall marketing
plan. As much as a good logo can help you, a bad logo can
really hinder your progress. If your logo is a hindrance,
then it is time to think about updating it and possibly
seeking some professional help to do it.
Your
logo design really is that important to your overall marketing.
Your logo is really a part of the foundation of your marketing
and acts as a way to consistently send out the same quality
message to each of your customers. It tells them the quality
of your services and separates you from a huge number of
similar services your customer may be confronted with on
a daily basis.
I hope this has been some help to you and gives you a simple
look at how important your logo really is and gives you
some guidelines for which to see if your own logo measures
up to what it should be.
If
anyone would like to see some samples of what I am referring
to in this article, please just let me know. I would be
happy to share a few PDF samples with you that show how
good logos can really work and points out the various tips
I mentioned above. If you might be interested, simply send
me an e-mail at magic4u02@aol.com. I would be happy to get
it out to you in hopes that it might make some of my points
a little clear to you.
As
always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your
thoughts. So if you have any thoughts on my articles or
suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly
at magic4u02@aol.com. I would love to hear from you.

8. The Magic History Gathering At The Magic Circle
--------------------------------------------
Message by Edwin A Dawes (UK)
Saturday,
11 June 2016
This
year's Gathering at The Magic Circle Headquarters, the Centre
for the Magic Arts, London, chaired by Eddie Dawes, presents
another day of wide-ranging and interesting topics delivered
by six contributors.
Paul
Gordon will speak on 'Three Conjuring Eccentrics,' a trio
of magicians on whom he has published monographs, namely
Percy Naldrett, a former editor of The Magic Circular, Victor
Farelli, noted for his books on card magic and the Odin
Rings, and another Magic Circle notable, the card expert
Edward G Brown.
The
story of a now little-known 19th-century London magician,
Professor Era, otherwise Thomas W. Edmonds, who for a period
worked through Hamley's Agency and William Morton but had
another occupation, will be related by Peter Brunning under
the title 'Professor Era, the Magical Milkman.'
Mike
Clague, author of The Magic Isle (2015), in his talk 'Nineteenth-Century
Magicians on the Magic Isle' will address the astonishing
number of magicians who crossed the Irish Sea, especially
post-1850 when reliable transport became available, to perform
in the Isle of Man as it developed to become a favourite
holiday resort.
'Itching
to see the Show! The Magic of the Flea Circus' is the title
of the presentation by Jon Marshall, renowned modern exponent
of sideshows, with an age-old form of entertainment that
was a staple feature of British fairground sideshows in
the first half of the 20th century.
Fergus
Roy, with "Will Goldston, The Man and the Legend,"
will focus on the fascinating career of the most influential
British magic dealer of the first half of the 20th century
and reveal much hitherto unknown information about the man
and his business.
Finally
Scott Penrose will display his latest creation.
There
will also be a sale of some desirable books from the collection
of the late David Price.
Tickets
which cost £40 include morning coffee, a buffet lunch
and afternoon tea. For details of payment, which must be
made prior to the event, contact Bob Loomis by email on
bobloomis@themagiccircle.co.uk

10. Dorothy Dietrich, Receives The Two Of The Highest Honors

Woman
Magician, Dorothy Dietrich, gets the two highest honors
from The Society of American Magicians.
Magic's
most notable society gives Pennsylvania native an 8 page
feature cover story in their MUM magazine, and separately
the rarely bestowed Presidential Citation.
Dorothy
Dietrich of Scranton Pennsylvania, originally from Erie
PA, has been awarded magic's most prestigious award, The
Presidential Citation, as well as an 8 page feature cover
story in their magazine, MUM, for her many historical accomplishments.
The Society of American Magicians is one of magic's oldest,
richest and most prestigious organizations with hundreds
of clubs and thousands of members around the globe. The
Presidential Citation is the highest award the Society of
American Magicians can bestow to any magician worldwide,
and even rarer to be given to a female in the male dominated
field. The Citation from President David Bowers to Dietrich
along with business partner Dick Brookz states it is for
"constant efforts to elevate and advance the art of
magic" and "extraordinary support promoting the
goals and the values of The Society of American Magicians."
Dorothy commented "of all the many things I've accomplished
in my career, this is a highpoint. I couldn't be more proud."
Bio at (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dorothy_Dietrich)
Rankopedia.com's
"Greatest magician of all time" ranking places
Dorothy Dietrich in the top seven only proceeded in order
by Houdini, Copperfield, Criss Angel, David Blaine, Penn
&Teller, and Doug Henning. No other woman appears in
their listing of the top 20 magicians. http://www.rankopedia.com/Greatest-magician-of-all-time/Step1/3376.htm?
Brainz.org's
listing of the "10 Greatest Escape Artists in History"
proclaims "Dorothy Dietrich is probably the best-known
female escapologist of all time," and named her as
one of the top four with Houdini again being number one.
Dietrich
is considered the first woman to gain prominence as a female
magician and escape artist since the days of Houdini, breaking
the glass ceiling for women in the field. She's the first
and only woman to have performed the jinxed catching of
a bullet in her mouth. a feat that has killed twelve men
and injured many others. The bullet catch is the one stunt
Houdini announced he would do and then backed out of. She's
also the first woman to perform a straitjacket escape while
suspended hundreds of feet in the air from a burning rope
as shown on a Home Box Office Special The World's Greatest
Escapes.
Last
year she uncovered Houdini's best, and believed lost, film
"The Grim Game." It was restored and shown for
the first time in 96 years at the finale of the week long
Turner Classic Movies Festival in 2015 and televised last
October. TCM flew Dietrich out to Hollywood for the premier
of the restored film as the closing event to a standing
ovation. Additionally she replaced Houdini's bust at his
grave site destroyed by vandals and missing for over 30
years. She is founder and director of The Houdini Museum
of The Only Building in the World Dedicated to Houdini,
originally the first Houdini museum in New York City at
The Magic Towne House before moving the collection to Scranton,
PA. in 1980.
The
2006 Columbia Encyclopedia included Dietrich among their
"eight most noted magicians of the late 20th century".
Early on, as a teenager, she already was dubbed as "The
First Lady of Magic." Dietrich, often called the Female
Houdini, has duplicated many of Houdini's original escapes.
In addition to escapes and large-scale stunts, Dietrich
performs magic with live animals such as doves, rabbits,
poodles and ducks. She's known for sawing men in half, and
for levitating volunteers from the audience. Dietrich has
created special shows for such companies as Maidenform,
Pooltrol, Yago Sangria, Manhattan Shirts, as well as fashion
and cosmetic companies. She is a regular performer for trade
and industrial events.
In
the 2013 hit film, "Now You See Me," Isla Fisher
played an escape artist named Henley Reeves. In an interview
Fisher said, "I watched all of Houdini's work and Dorothy
Dietrich, who is amazing, you have to watch her." "I
got to train with Dorothy Dietrich" and "studied
the life and work of illusionist Dorothy Dietrich to prepare
for the role."
Dorothy
Dietrich's many appearances on national TV includes Home
Box Office Special "The World's Greatest Escapes"
as special guest star, You Asked For It, Travel Channel,
Magic Road Trip, Mysteries at The Museum, The Bill Cosby
Variety Show, The Tom Snyder Show along with Kiss, Evening
Magazine, The Montel Williams Show, twice with Rich Little
on You Asked For It, Real People, TV Land's Myths &
Legends, Exploring The Unknown, Biography Channel's Dead
Famous-Houdini, Just For The Record, The Best of Everything,
Klein Time with Robert Klein, Man and His Mysteries with
Dick Van Patten, Pierre Ferland's Autobus du Canada (three
segments), SyFi Channel's Deals From The Dark Side, Huff
Post TV on Houdini's Birthday, NPR Weekend edition Trials
and Tribulation of being a woman in a man's field, PBS On
The Pennsylvania Road, PBS Strange and Unusual Museums,
and PBS Conversations. Part of popular culture she was even
mentioned in a segment on House MD in a scene about her
bullet catch. (Year 8, Segment 8, Perils of Paranoia).
