Message by Stan Allen, Editor of MAGIC Magazine
Fifty years ago, John Moerhing appeared on the most influential,
star-making variety show of its time: "The Ed Sullivan
Show." This month, we take you behind the scenes of
John's appearance on the CBS program, as well as tell the
fascinating history of the show itself through the eyes
of alumni performers: Fantasio, The Gustafsons, Harry Lorayne,
Norm Nielsen, and Marvyn Roy.
In the present, we'll fill you in on: how the magic got
into the new film, "Now You See Me 2," coming
out June 10th; who's doing the new season of "Masters
of Illusion," currently airing on the CW network; the
most amazing automaton of our generation and who's making
them; and the magical bartender who has been hiding in plain
sight at The Magic Castle, and who just walked off with
the AMA's Close-up Magician of the Year award.
And there's more! The new Vanishing Inc. Close-up Theatre
at the College of Magic in South Africa, the FantaSea shipboard
convention aboard the Queen Mary, and Jarrett & Raja
on "Shark Tank."
Plus Mark Kornhauser, Simon Coronel, Martin Lewis, Ian Rowland,
Mike Bent, Steve Reynolds, David Berglas, Ryan Matney, Dean

5. The Magic Word Podcast: Fay Presto
--------------------------------------------
Message by Scott Wells, M.I.M.C. with Gold Star
Fay
Presto - From The Distaff Side of Magic
Fay
Presto represents the third consecutive Brit that has been
featured on The Magic Word Podcast starting with Simon Lovell
two weeks ago and continuing with Kieron Johnson last week.
This week, Fay and I are in the "Hospitality Room"
at the annual F.F.F.F. convention, so there is a little
ambient background noise, but it's not too distracting.
Fay
is one of the ensemble performers that is taking the country
by storm in "Champions of Magic" which predates
"The Illusionists" tour. She and three other outstanding
magicians are touring the U.K. and other countries with
their very unique styles of magic. She talks about the tour
plus her encounters at performances for people like Sir
Paul McCartney, Elton John, and Princess Diane
just
to drop a few names. She also gives tips for women magicians
on how to make your dresses more "magic friendly"
and still be stylish. She also gives some advice to young
girls who want to become a magician and also to magicians
on how grown-ups should treat/encourage aspiring young girls.
You
can watch a video, see some photos, read the blog, listen
to the podcast, and download the MP3 files at: http://themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/293-fay-presto
Congratulations
to Gary Fambrough and Steve Gallagher who were the two winners
of the contest for a free copy of Tom Frame's new book,
"Framework". Thank you for all who entered the
contest. We have some more contests coming in future weeks
so stay tuned.
And
I want to welcome the newest "Friends of The Magic
Word": Kieron Johnson, Michael Breggar, Terry Greenwood,
and Lewis Turner. Thank you, guys, for your support and
confidence in the show.

7. Entertainers With Disabilities - #400 - Kyle Peron

Message by Kyle Peron

As
most folks know...or maybe do not know....I am a deaf magician.
I started losing my hearing at age 8 and it got worse as
the years rolled on. I am now about 65% deaf in both ears.
I lip read to understand what people say and I tend to feel
music more than I hear it.
There
are many magicians out there who have various disabilities.
I commend them for never giving up or giving in. Magic for
me was a saving grace. It brought me out of my shyness and
helped me to learn to communicate better and focus more.
In a way magic was a healing art for me.
If
you are reading this and have a disability (or know someone
interested in magic that has one) I hope that it inspires
you to go out there and get involved in the art. We do not
have to stop doing what we love simply because it may be
harder for us. What we must do is have a desire to go above
and beyond and push ourselves to simply adapt.
Magic
and performing magic was a challenge for me and still is
in some degrees. That does not mean I have to stop doing
it. It does not mean I have to settle for second best. If
the desire is there, work hard to come up with a means in
which to accomplish what you want to accomplish. There is
always a way to make it work for you.
Although
I can't hear music well at all, I adapted my sound system
so I can feel the vibrations from the speaker hitting my
leg or through my shoes. This gives me a means in which
to stay on cue. I could have easily given up and told myself
music is something I can't use or do. But having a disability
does not mean I have to settle for anything less than anyone
else.
Sure
it may be harder and sure it may take longer. However, working
hard is something everyone does who has a passion for the
art.
I
never say any of this for folks to feel sorry for me. I
do not feel sorry for myself. For you see, to me this is
a gift. Although I cannot HEAR the world like you all can,
I can SEE the world in ways others simply can't. It makes
me love the art of magic even more. It makes me realize
that through my magic I can make a person smile or laugh.
Isn't that the greatest form of magic there is?
My
disability has given me the chance to share magic and a
powerful message with audiences I perform for. Through this
wonderful art, I can let audiences know about deaf culture.
I can share the message of overcoming hurdles people face
in life. I can share a strong anti-bullying message with
students because I have lived it first-hand.
I
write this article as a way of reaching out to YOU. ALL
of us are faced with hardships in life. Some of us though
a physical disability and others simply through the roadblocks
of life. Never let these stop your pursuit of learning and
performing magic. It can heal you and can also heal your
audiences in ways you never dreamed of.
As
always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your
thoughts. So if you have any thoughts on my articles or
suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly
at magic4u02@aol.com. I would love to hear from you.

8. Special Guest at Sorcerers Safari Magic Camp 2016
--------------------------------------------
Message by Lee Asher
Toronto,
Ontario. - May 19th, 2016 EST - Campers and fans of Sorcerers
Summer Safari Magic Camp have been posting ideas on who
this year's special guest will be for months. Perhaps someone
extra special in celebration of 20 years in operation?
Finally,
the wait is over. For the first time ever the special guest
this year will be famed magician, Suzanne!
Recently
famous for fooling Penn & Teller and winning the Close-Up
Magician of The Year award from the Magic Castle, Suzanne's
magic is internationally acclaimed. She has released several
bestselling DVDs and appeared on the cover of Genii Magazine.
"She
simply loves magic and will be a perfect fit for camp and
the kids. What a wonderful role model for the young girls,
too," exclaimed Jennifer Segal, co-owner of the magic
performance art camp.
Segal
continued, "There really is no better way to spend
quality time immersed in the art of magic than with one
of your heroes. Who doesn't love Suzanne? She's awesome!"
Sorcerers
Safari Summer Magic Camp chooses only the best of the best
to come up as their special guest, and it is always a hot
debate at the annual executive staff meetings. After unanimously
agreeing Suzanne was a perfect fit, the team asked her and
she gladly accepted.
"Suzanne
is going to have a great time up at camp, and so are all
the campers and staff. She is a celebrated performer with
tons of magic to share, recognized and respected by everyone
in the world of magic, and she's a genuine trailblazer,"
said Sorcerers Safari sixteen year camp veteran and professional
magician, Rosemary Reid.
Reid
adds, "I have not had the pleasure of meeting Suzanne
yet, but have anticipated a female special guest for about...
sixteen years, when I first attended Sorcerers Safari as
a girl. We welcome her to our camp family with open arms.
Hopefully her attendance will encourage more young women
to come to camp too!"
Sorcerers
Safari continues to grow exponentially every year with a
high rate of return campers and staff. With luck, Suzanne
will love camp so much she will be counting down the days
until 2017 along with everyone else!
Are
you ages 8-20 or know someone who is and would benefit from
a week at Sorcerers Safari? Learn more about attending Sorcerers
Safari Magic Camp with Suzanne this year on August 7th-12th,
2016.

11. June Issue Of Genii Squib
--------------------------------------------
Message by From Richard Kaufman
The
June issue of Genii is Now Live Online! (Paper copies are
in the mail.)
Make
sure to check out the many video and audio features in the
digital version of this issue. Subscribe at www.geniimagazine.com
I'd
like to point out that a printed copy of any issue of Genii
is only $6.50, not $43! Yes, there is a magic magazine that
charges $43 for a single printed issue. Yikes!
Hannibal
is on our cover this month, a fine close-up magician whose
life and many talents are not well known since he rarely
performs at conventions (though he does appear at The Magic
Castle once a year). Dustin Stinett looks behind his benign
countenance to find out what makes Hannibal tick, and why
he decided not to compete at FISM in Italy last year (includes
five videos).
Our
next feature catches just-retired AMA president Erika Larsen
and finds out what she's up to, how she's dealing with the
death of her mother Irene, and what's ahead for Brookledge
Follies.
Many
years ago we ran a story by Mel Gordon on the infamous Nazi
clairvoyant Hanussen. Recently Chicagoan Neil Tobin mounted
a show about Hanussen called Palace of the Occult. It's
springtime for Hitler! (With video).
"The
Eye" returns for its second installment, now four pages
of fascinating bits and bobs by Todd Karr.
If
you want to know where magic is regularly performed around
the U.S.A. and select international venues, don't neglect
to read "Now Performing" before your next trip.
We
have audio columns from Max Maven and Jon Racherbaumer,
and Rock gets into some mind-splaining in "On the Slant"
If
you were at the Genii Convention in 2015 and saw John Gaughan
perform the "Burning Globe" just before "The
Orange Tree," you'll find out more in your monthly
visit to his "Chamber of Secrets"
Jim
Steinmeyer gives away a damn good piece of stage mentalism
in "Conjuring"-it's something he hid in print
under another name years ago
Max
Maven sets you up as a Psychic Detective in "Lost Horizons"
Dani
DaOrtiz lets the spectator think of any card in "DaOrtiz
a la Carte!" (With video).
Eugene
Burger is given the third degree by Jeff McBride on the
subject of vice and virtue in "Eugene's Notebook"
(with video)
Helder
Guimaraes tangoes with the devil and the details (and the
best version of a "Rub a Dub Dub" vanish I've
ever seen that isn't "Rub a Dub Dub") in "Invisible
Strings" (with video).
Pushing
that big boulder up the same hill over and over is just
what Pendragon does in "Panmagium."
With
no internet service on a lecture tour through Spain, Tom
Stone manages to conjure up clever electrical magic in "Lodestones."
"Magicana"
contains three interesting tricks, brought to us by Andi
Gladwin (with video).
Daniel
Ulin brings us the latest from Los Angeles in "Knights
at The Magic Castle."
John
Lovick reviews books, Joe M. Turner hits the latest videos,
and Danny Orleans gives the latest tricks a test run.

12. The Art Of Magic Gets A New Champion
--------------------------------------------
Message by Jeff McBride & Lynn Miner (USA)
New
Organization Formed To Promote Education For Magicians
May 12, 2016, Las Vegas, NV -- The Institute for Magic Education,
Inc. has been created to help magicians, magic students,
and magic enthusiasts increase their skill and knowledge
of the magical performing arts. The Institute has just received
its designation as a 501(c)3 non-profit organization by
the IRS and has commenced operations. To support its initial
activities, the Institute has launched a $100,000 fundraising
campaign - Transforming Magicians and Magic - to provide
scholarship support for deserving students and help underwrite
innovative magic projects. The Institute's stated mission
is to help students of all ages fulfill their own interests
and potential as magicians and performers, and to lift the
level of the art throughout the world.
Jeff
McBride, founder of the Magic & Mystery School, notes
that "As was true for Harry Potter, becoming a full-fledged
wizard requires specialized training that goes well beyond
reading a library book or having Uncle Bob teach you how
to pull pennies from your ear."
Dr. Lynn Miner, president of the Institute, states that
"While magic schools exist in the United States and
elsewhere to teach the performing arts, most lack a firm
financial footing to award scholarships to needy students."
Dr.
Miner adds, "The Institute intends to fill that gap
as a tax-exempt organization headed by seven top-flight
magicians on its Board of Directors, including Jeff McBride,
the "World Ambassador of Magic," and Mac King,
acclaimed by MAGIC Magazine as the premiere comedy magician
in the world today.
Other
Board members include Tobias Beckwith, an innovative producer
of magic shows in Las Vegas, New York and around the world;
Bill Evans, a lawyer/magician who is past president of the
International Brotherhood of Magicians; Bill Cook, hailed
by his peers as the Young Master of Magic; Simone Marron,
a magic enthusiast active at the local and national levels;
and Dr. Miner.
Further
details about the Institute, including how to donate funds
in support of magic education or apply for financial aid,

in need, such as orphan children or senior citizens. Projects
so far range from Kevin Spencer's Healing of Magic and Magicana's
Sharing Wonder, to Magicians Without Borders, Magic is Medicine,
and Michael Finney's Foundation.

--------------------------------------------
Message by Julie Eng (Canada)
Magicana
is pleased to announce a forthcoming, online exhibition
- in conjunction the release of the next issue of Magicol
No. 191 - on Dale Harney and The Magic Palace.
A
Canadian television series, The Magic Palace was an inspiration
for a generation of magicians. Filmed in Calgary, Alberta,
Canada in the late 70s and early 80s, the show featured
an enormous roster of performers from Canada, the United
States and Europe including many whose names are still well
known today. The show was conceived and hosted by Canadian
stage illusionist, Dale Harney.
Thanks
to the efforts of many magicians who were able to provide
us with VHS copies of various episodes, we have been to
recover over 220 performance clips. As a sneak peek, and
to introduce you to Dale and his inventiveness, we released
a clip of him performing one of his signature illusions,
a variation of Houdini's Water Torture Cell. See it here:
http://www.magicana.com/read/blog/magic-palace
We
plan to release the full Dale Harney & The Magic Palace
online exhibition soon.
In addition to developing and hosting this online exhibition
and archive, we will be working with the new Art of Magic
(www.artofmagic.com) team. They will be providing commentary
on the various performances.
