I really enjoyed Bruce Glen (The Gentleman Magician) show while I was in Sydney Australia last week. He has a weekly parlour show each Friday at one of the city's most beautiful historic buildings The Royal Automobile Club of Australia.

The Magical Soirées concept was inspired by Robert-Houdin, Hofzinser, Malini and of course Steve Cohen - whose Chamber Magic shows are essential viewing for anyone visiting New York.

Bruce describes his performance style as "storytelling magic for adults - but not necessarily grown-ups" and, at his Magical Soirées, the stories will be about Sydney and some of its characters.

When: 7:33pm (approx.) - every Friday
Where: The Royal Automobile Club of Australia, 89 Macquarie Street, Sydney (Cnr Albert Street) … Two minutes from Circular Quay.

Tickets: $75 (includes drink & canapés on arrival)

Bookings Are Essential: Book online at www.GentlemanMagician.com.au

Further information: Bruce Glen +61 (0)412 110 959 bg@GentlemanMagician.com.au

Message by Nopera Whitley (NZ)

The 2017 NZ Magic Convention is shaping up to be a truly world-class convention. We have already announced three world leading performers, and there are more to come!

The beauty of NZ conventions is that they are small and intimate and there are plenty of opportunities to interact with the headliners one-on-one. No need to fork out thousands on airfares to see these world class acts in the US or UK, only to be lost in the crowd.

Names already announced include:
- Reigning FISM Grand Prix World Champion of Magic - Hector Mancha
- Two-time Magic Castle 'Stage Magician of the Year' - Rob Zabrecky
- Reigning FISM World Champion of Close-up Card Magic - Shin Lim

There are a small number of discounted, early-bird registrations available but you better get in quick.

4. Naked Magician Fools Penn and Teller With Tasty Card Trick
--------------------------------------------
Article forwarded on by Peter Blake

Magician Vinny Grosso performed on Penn and Teller: Fool Us in hopes of pulling one over on the legendary duo. And Grosso isn't just some up-and-coming magician; he is a former president of the Society of American Magicians.

For his trick, Grosso stripped down completely naked and taped his eyes shut. He then had Las Vegas comedian Carrot Top choose a single card from a deck of cards and share it with the audience. Grosso then tasted the card three time and declared, I can tell that your card is not only red, not only a diamond, but the king of diamonds."

Penn and Teller were so baffled by the trick they thought Grosso might be receiving cues of what the card was through the small privacy screen that covered his groin. Penn asked, "Can we look at the screen? There could be some kind of cueing device behind the screen." To which Grosso joked, "I just want you to know that objects behind this screen appear smaller than they really are."

Ultimately Penn and Teller admitted that they had no idea how Grosso guessed the right card and the naked magician was given a trophy.

I was talking to a friend recently about the concept of having a great show but simply feeling awkward on how to start. Now the main issue was this strange feeling of what to do when the kids start coming into the room for the show and what you should or should not do.

There is a fear that the kids are in control from the start and how do I gain that control back before the show starts. Many even say the client or adult should be handling getting the kids in and sitting down and acting appropriate.

This is a huge issue for folks so if you have issues with it, you are not alone. My feeling is that since it is MY show, I am in control of my show at all times. That means I should be responsible for where the kids sit, how close they sit and everything from the moment they come in to the start of the show and beyond.

What I often will do is stand in front of my table area at the exact spot where I want the first row to begin. As kids come in I welcome them and smile and tell them the first row starts right where I am. I state that we need the b-day child to be front and center to get a great seat and I ask them to find a seat and sit criss cross applesauce. They all know what that means as it is a common term heard today in schools.

I continue to stand there until all kids are in and all seated. I have much better control that way and I am seen as a professional by the client because I am controlling the situation right from the start. This makes it not only easier for me during the show but my value goes up in the mind of the client.

Only when all children are seated and looking up at me, do I begin with the warm up. This is perfect because I am already out front with them and in a perfect situation to get the audience warmed up, liking me and feeling more at ease prior to the actual intro routine starting.

Establishing a character or who you are is very important. However, I do this through the course of my warm up, opener, verbal intro and then my first routine. By then I have well established who I am to the children.

I find that if I just open cold by going right into the musical intro, then it makes the children a bit taken off guard. This is truer for the younger groups then the older ones.

So make it a policy to always be in charge even if the client is doing a good job. They can always assist you. However, it is your show and you need to be the professional who takes control as opposed to the children being in this free-for-all state. You are setting ground rules and expectations right from the start.

The kids should NEVER rule. They may think so, but it is YOU that needs to make sure that you show them that you are in charge and you are going to have a great and fun time with them. This does not mean you disrespect. It simply means being a professional and taking control. Never wait for them to give you control. You will be waiting a long time. Kids to not give control over to you. They expect the adult figure to tell them what they need to do next and how to act.

As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your thoughts. So if you have any thoughts on my articles or suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly at magic4u02@aol.com. I would love to hear from you.

6. Aero Magic - Where Magic Really Takes Off…
--------------------------------------------
Message by Dave Lord (Australia)

AeroMagic is a collaboration of 2 kinds of people - those who like to perform magic (magicians) and those who like to fly aeroplanes (pilots).

Based in Brisbane, Australia, the vision of the group is to take magic to new heights by visiting remote locations in the Great Australian Outback.

The Aero Magic team will be leaving Archerfield on Monday 29th August, bound for the iconic Birdsville Races. On board will be French Magician, Fabrice, and Brisbane magician, Dave Lord. There is currently space for another magician to join the trip, so contact them today if you are interested.

One of the goals of the project is to raise funds for the Royal Flying Doctor Service. They are an authorised RFDS Community Fundraiser. Proceeds from their undertakings will be donated to the RFDS.

They hope that the Aero Magic Project will gain a following in Australia, and also internationally, from magicians, pilots, fellow adventurers, and of course, friends and family. Each day of the trip they will be publishing a video of their daily adventures to YouTube. So if you would like to see some amazing magic tricks performed in unusual places, or you are keen to learn more about the challenges of flying small aircraft in the Outback, or just want to keep you up to date about their upcoming adventures, go to www.AeroMagic.com.au and sign on for their newsletter.

The second is my take on the Three Shell Game. You may like this as I came up with a version of the basic move where the hand is shown empty and you don't have to back clip the pea. Then the end sequence was just a crazy combination of obscure ideas!
