3. MAGIC Magazine Announces Their Final 25 Issues
--------------------------------------------
Article forwarded on by Mel Kientz (US)
During
the last quarter century, MAGIC Magazine has published 300
issues, with thousands of tricks, stories, interviews, and
columns. The goal was simple: to create the best magazine
for magicians, in the hope of making the art even better.
Things
have changed in the last 25 years, most notably the Internet
and smart devices. But our goal is still the same, and so
it is with great excitement we announce that we are going
back to our roots and printing 25 final issues, premium
editions that we call MAGIC Legacy.
MAGIC
Legacy is an opportunity to raise the bar, shake things
up, and break a few rules. One of the biggest changes with
MAGIC Legacy is that these issues will not be sold individually;
Legacy magazines will only be sold as a complete set. This
allows us to do some exciting things on the pages of the
magazine - and with the ship schedule - that we've never
been able to do before.
We will share more details in the coming weeks but for now
here are just a few of the things that will make Legacy
special
Limited print run. Legacy is sold exclusively as a complete
set, and by subscription only.
Exclusive bonuses. For example, you'll get a Legacy Deck
- a deck of special gaffed cards for some amazing tricks
found throughout the Legacy issues.
Remixing
content.
We're
reimagining some of our favorite items from the past, while
introducing plenty of new contributors, tricks, and stories.
Less Advertising. More selective. More interesting.
No
digital edition. We're going back to our roots of paper
and ink.
Secret
delivery dates. Legacy will not ship monthly. Twenty-five
magazine will arrive in your mailbox at varying intervals
- each a surprise, the way magic should be - but all by
August 2018.
This
is the end. Legacy editions mark the end of MAGIC Magazine.
The publication will not be sold or rebooted in any form.
This is it! . . .
MAGIC Legacy is a premium collection with a premium price.
Each
Legacy issue has a cover price of $10, making the complete
set of Legacy editions $250 (US). This price covers all
25 special edition magazines and all the bonuses, including
a deck of gaffed cards. If these cards could be purchased
separately as individual packet tricks, they alone would
cost more than the price of Legacy.
But
with our pre-publication specials, you don't need to pay
the full cost!
Subscribe
by October 31, and the prepublication rate is only $175
(US). Even better, if you subscribe by September 30, you
can get the special Early Bird pricing of only $140!
Plus,
you can lock in Early Bird pricing today with a deposit
of only $35. Additional payments will be due in January,
March, and May 2017.
And
if you are one of the first 10,000 to subscribe, you will
receive a free copy of Square One, a new edition of the
now highly collectible book sent to early MAGIC Magazine
subscribers in 1991 when MAGIC was first launched

6. Magicians Have Accused a Producer of "Ripping Off"
--------------------------------------------
Article forwarded on by John Peterson (UK)
Evening
Standard
Two
top magicians have accused a producer of "ripping off"
their tricks in a plagiarism row over West End magic show
Impossible.
Jamie
Allan and Luis de Matos starred in a previous run of the
production in London.
And now the pair have branded producer Jamie Hendry "cheap
and unethical" for allegedly including very similar
tricks in a West End version of the show.
Mr
Hendry denies the accusations, including a claim by Mr Allan
that the show recreates a laser levitation trick that he
performed last year.
He
told the Stage: "It's a blatant attempt to copy my
creation, which I did for them in good faith.
"It's
how I earn my living. Every penny I earn is spent trying
to create things that will resonate with the audience, and
it's so easy for someone to rip off a cheap version of it."
Mr Allan claimed that the new routine had "similarities
in plot and technique" but was not identical to his
own version.
Mr
De Matos said that his idea of handing postcards to audience
members as they enter the auditorium - part of an act called
Order and Chaos - had also been used in the recreation of
Impossible.

7. Who Are You Really? - #412 - Kyle Peron
--------------------------------------------
Message by Kyle Peron (US)
magic4u02@aol.com
http://www.facebook.com/perondesign
http://www.kpmagicproducts.com
Who
are you really? I know this sounds silly, but I am not asking
for your name or where you live or how you grew up even.
I am asking a deeper meaning as it relates to magic and
the magic that you do. Who are you? Have you ever asked
yourself that question? Let me dive in a bit and talk about
this very subject in hopes that it may open some eyes and
gets you thinking in a different way.
In
many ways magicians feel that the magic and the trick is
everything. After all, why shouldn't it be? I mean we buy
the trick to perform the trick to seek a reaction from the
audience? Right? Well not entirely. In many ways we get
into this false assumption that the trick is everything.
We often times focus so much of the magic or the props.
But
I ask you this simple question? What do you want your audiences
to remember after your performance? If you focus so much
on the props or the effect the only thing they may remember
is the trick itself and nothing more than that. If this
is the case, you mine as well just place a deck of cards
on a table and walk away. Why even bother performing if
the only thought you are leaving them with is that card
deck?
To
me, magic is and should be so much more than that. It is
about YOU and the entertainment value and experience YOU
directly create for any audience. I want my audiences remembering
ME and the experience I created for them. The feelings and
the emotions and the journey I take them on are what matters
most to me.
So
asking yourself, "who are you?" is simply asking
yourself to define who you are to an audience. What is it
you are trying to say to them about you? Defining who you
are helps to also define the magic that you do and how you
do it. This is very important. You can almost think of it
in terms of an actor in a movie. An actor creates a character
and you know right off hand who that character is. You also
know what that character would do and what he would not
do. If the character does something that does not fit, it
becomes so out of character, that it simply does not make
any sense. This is what defining yourself all is about.
When
you define yourself, you know what magic works for you and
what does not. It helps you to determine what tricks may
make sense and even will help you to define routines that
work best for you. Defining who you are even can help you
to realize what markets make sense for you to perform for
and what ones simply do not.
Defining
who you are is critical, but defining who you are NOT is
even more important. Too many magicians try to be a jack
of all trades. How many magicians have you seen that have
on their business cards, "magic for all occasions"?
A lot right? Well to me, this is not defining anything.
If you define who you are, you should know exactly what
markets you specialize in and which you do not. If you know
who you are, you know your focus should be in certain markets
only simply because that is who you are and what you are
best at doing.
For
example, I see so many magicians become children's entertainers
and perform kid's shows. There is nothing wrong with this.
Well nothing wrong with this if you like children and enjoy
performing for them. But how many people out there have
you seen that do kids shows and hate it? When asked why
they do it, they state they have to cause the money is good
and it's "easy money." Well I am sorry but to
me that is NEVER a good enough reason. If you hate kids
then you should not be doing kid's shows. Defining yourself
will tell you this.
Likewise,
why call yourself a comedy magician if you are not in the
least bit funny or comical? It only hurts yourself and hurts
other magicians around you. Now you may be saying that it
is hard to define one's self. This can be certainly true.
No one ever said it was easy. But it is absolutely worth
it. It makes you who you are and makes your magic unique.
If
you want a great way to assist in finding out who you are,
do this. Find 5-6 people you absolutely trust to be as honest
as they can be. You tell them to write down just 5 adjectives
that BEST describe how they see you as a person. They are
to write 5 or 6 words that best defines who you are and
your personality as THEY see it. They are not to think about
it. They are to do this quickly. They are also to be dead
honest with you.
When
you get these back, you will be often times shocked that
how you THINK you are is way different then how OTHERS see
you. This is important because it is the lay audience that
is important to us as magicians. If they do not think we
are a funny person at all, then maybe comedy magic is not
the area I should go in. This exercise can really help one
to define who they are and the magic they do.
So
take some time this week and really sit down and ask yourself
who you are. Define it for yourself and get others to assist
you with it. Instead of trying to guess or be a jack of
all trades, help to really figure out what your magic is
trying to say and how you are saying it. It makes you a
better performer and your audiences will thank you for it.
As
always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your
thoughts. So if you have any thoughts on my articles or
suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly
at magic4u02@aol.com. I would love to hear from you.

I
don't watch a lot of TV shows, but one of the shows that
I have been watching is Penn & Teller: Fool Us. Basically,
how the show works is magicians are bought on the show where
they get to perform their best trick in front of legendary
magic duo Penn & Teller. If the magician is good enough
to fool Penn & Teller, he/she gets to be the opening
act for one of their shows at the Rio All-Suites Hotel in
Las Vegas, NV.
And
now, I'm counting down my top 5 favorite magic acts that
appeared on the show.
