Magician
Jonathan Pendragon's Assistant Dies after Five-Story Fall
from Building While Stargazing.
Famed
magician Jonathan Pendragon's assistant Jacosa Nao Kato
has died after falling off a building, falling five stories
to her death in Los Angeles.
Related:
World's Tallest Water Slide Shut Down After Child's Decapitation
Kato (pictured above) had performed at the Magic Castle
on Wednesday night when, afterwards, she went up to the
roof of a nearby apartment building in order to stargaze
with her boyfriend.
At
some point on the roof, she allegedly fell to her death
in a horrible accident.
Pendragon is currently one of the stars of the TV show Masters
of Illusion that appears on The CW.
Various
reports list Kato as Pendragon's step-daughter, as well
as an assistant of some sort - but what's clear over everything
is how close the magician was with the 34-year-old.
Right
now, TMZ is reporting the cause of death is being investigated
as "accidental," with an autopsy pending.

6. The Magic Word Podcast with Todd Robbins
--------------------------------------------
Message by Scott Wells, M.I.M.C. with Gold Star
Todd
Robbins turned eating glass into a real job. More than just
a "sideshow entertainer", Todd was one of the
original "Long Beach Mystics" growing up and learning
along with several other magicians who have grown to enjoy
successful careers. Todd is currently starring as the host
of Discovery Network's TV series, "True Nightmares"
which just completed its second season. Not letting grass
grow under his feet, Todd is working to bring "Play
Dead" to a "theater near you" sometime in
the (hopefully) near future. "Play Dead" is a
play that was co-written by Todd and Teller (of Penn &
Teller fame) and played off Broadway in New York for several
seasons. Todd is also one of the producers and regular hosts
of "Monday Night Magic" in New York City which
is celebrating its 19th year in business.
In
this week's podcast, Todd talks about "Play Dead",
developing a stomach for "geek magic" (sword swallowing,
fire and glass eating, etc.), working with the Big Apple
Circus, his journey to working with the Discovery Network,
plus several delightful stories along the way.
You
can watch a couple videos of Todd (one with Teller and the
other of him eating a light bulb), see some photos, read
the blog, listen to the podcast online and download the
MP3 file by visiting: http://themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/333-todd-robbins

Vegas's
Two Biggest Magicians in Epic Wand-Measuring Contest
By
Amy Zimmerman
When
two grown men fight over the title of world's greatest magician,
everybody wins. Predominately the purview of children's
parties and particularly depressing midlife crises, magic
is also the chosen career of a handful of professional illusionists.
This 2016 alliance of magicians is helmed by two powerhouses:
Criss Angel and David Copperfield. For years, Angel and
Copperfield have maintained a seemingly tranquil relationship
as the two most popular magicians on the Las Vegas strip.
But according to recent events, it appears that this harmonious
relationship was nothing but a perfect illusion.
Particularly
bold dye jobs and otherworldly command of supernatural forces
aside, magicians are just like us: they're vain, petty,
and love to stir up drama on Twitter. Back in May, Criss
Angel decided to engage in some light social media PR, retweeting
an article deeming him "The biggest name in Las Vegas
Magic." The article came courtesy of Bloomberg Businessweek,
which Angel referred to as "the most respected business
magazine".
Unfortunately,
Angel's self-proclaimed supremacy was short-lived - on October
27th, Forbes named Copperfield the highest-paid magician
in the world. Needless to say, Criss Angel was irked. For
a man who has had metal suspension hooks inserted into his
back, the magician has surprisingly thin skin...

How
many of you carry with you some sort of lucky charm? Maybe
it's a lucky quarter or a certain deck of cards. Maybe it
is that magic wand that has special meaning to you. The
items that you carry for good luck can be as vast as your
own imagination. They also may be silly to others, but to
you, that have a special meaning.
There
are even rituals all magicians go through before a show.
Some meditate while others can't sit down. Some may have
to rehearse a certain routine in their mind while even others
may say a certain prayer. We all have our own ways in which
we deal with things and they simply are a part of the preparation
for performance.
But
why do we carry such objects? Why do we go through such
rituals? Maybe it is to bring us good luck in any performance
we do. Maybe it is to help us calm our nerves before we
hit the stage. Maybe it is even out of sheer habit. Whatever
the reason, I would like to think we do these things because
we feel it has a direct benefit for us as entertainers.
I
also have rituals I go through before every performance.
I also have objects that are dear to me because of the history
associated with them. However, the one object that has the
most meaning to me is something others would find pretty
funny. There is no real cost to it and it certainly is nothing
fancy. It is a simple sign that I have inside my cases.
The sign simply reads...
"Smile!
You're Supposed To Be Having Fun."
This
one single sign has more meaning and importance to me than
any rituals I do or objects I carry for good luck. It is
there to serve a HUGE purpose for me. It is there to always
remind me of WHY I perform magic.
I
think too often we forget just why we are magicians and
the impact our shows can have on people. We get so lost
in the realities of life that we forget that we are there
to entertain. We are there to put smiles on faces, make
people feel good or simply bring a laugh or two.
There
are so many things I can find to complain about during a
gig. The weather can be too hot. The client could not be
as friendly as we like. The setup is taking too long. I
am tired and not feeling well. The list goes on and on.
However, remember being a magician is something one should
be proud of. It is also not something we should be taking
lightly.
So
no matter what is going on in your head or in your life,
you need to rise to the occasion and be a professional every
single time out. Being a professional does not mean giving
50% effort. Being a professional does not start when the
curtains open and stop when they end. Being a professional
happens all the time. It is who we are, what we are and
how we react and interact with people.
So
the next time you are upset, angry or frustrated at a gig,
remember that there may be a kid in that audience that is
seeing their first magician EVER and YOU are it. That is
a huge thing. You owe it to yourself to bring your A game
every show. You also owe it to your magic brothers and sisters.
So
when you are setting up your show take a moment to simply
remember to "Smile! You're Supposed To Be Having Fun."
As
always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your
thoughts. So if you have any thoughts on my articles or
suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly
at magic4u02@aol.com. I would love to hear from you.

Indy
Star
Renowned
Indy magician, jazz host dies at 88
"Huck"
Riser was a business executive, expert magician, author
and jazz impresario. Oh, and art collector.
He
may have been one of the most versatile, multifaceted Hoosiers
who ever lived: business executive, expert magician, author,
jazz impresario, family man.
He
collected art, too, focusing on the Hoosier group. At one
time he was president of the Hoosier Art Salon. Oh, and
he was a sports enthusiast, the tennis chairman at Highland
Country Club.
Harry
Edward "Huck" Riser died Nov. 26 at age 88.
"The
last time I saw a list of the 10 best card men in the world,
he was on it," Frank Dailey, a former president of
the Society of American Magicians, told IndyStar in a 2005
interview. Riser was inducted into the society's Hall of
Fame earlier this year.
"In
the underground world of magicians, especially among those
who enjoy sleight-of-hand, Harry is something of a legend."
Stephen Minch, a publisher of magic books, told IndyStar
in 2005. Riser wrote two books on magic, "The Feints
and Temps of Harry Riser" and "Secrets of an Escamoteur."
Riser
worked in the insurance business, finishing his career as
executive vice president for Indianapolis-based Nyhart Co.
Then
he devoted himself to jazz music, producing and hosting
"The Grand Big Band Radio Hour" on WICR-FM. With
his warm baritone voice, Riser signed off each show by saying:
"Keep on digging the good stuff." He was inducted
into the Indianapolis Foundation Jazz Hall of Fame in 2013.
Riser
was married for 62 years to Mary Margret Shroyer who died
in 2013. He is survived by two children and a grandchild.
His
calling is 10 a.m. until noon Wednesday at Crown Hill Funeral
Home with the funeral at noon and then burial. The family
is planning a celebration of life at Highland Country Club
at a later date to be announced.
