2. Magic Castle Cabaret - Santa Barbara
--------------------------------------------
Message by Joan Lawton (US)

To clarify L.A. magazine story re: The Magic Castle

Milt and Arlene's plan for the Magic Castle Cabaret in Montecito will not be affiliated with the Academy of Magical Arts in Hollywood which manages its clubhouse, The Magic Castle. The AMA licenses the exclusive trademark Magic Castle® - Hollywood from the Larsen owned corporation Magic Castles Inc.

The Magic Castle Cabaret will be a small club devoted to close-up Magic and variety. Although the Larsen's purchased the former Café Del Sol Restaurant property in Montecito in May 2016, they have leased it to Warren Butler Events and it is currently in use for his events until May 2017. When that lease terminates the Larsen's intend to operate a member's only cabaret theatre.

The Larsen's are longtime residents of Santa Barbara and wanted to create an intimate venue for magicians and variety entertainers in their "home town". It will feature magicians from the AMA/Magic Castle Hollywood.

It is premature at this time to announce future policies and dates for the new venture.

If plans jell the Cabaret may open in the fall of 2017.

Milt Larsen's wife Arlene is the President of Zamagic Inc. who will manager the property. Milt Larsen will magically turn an old building into a vintage Spanish summer palace. He is well known for his ability to restore landmarks. (The Mayfair Music Hall and the Variety Arts Center.)

The AMA in Hollywood has 5,000 members internationally and operates in a 1910 Mansion that Milt Larsen turned a Victorian showplace in 1963. At the same time Larsen's late brother Bill Larsen Jr. formed the Academy of Magical Arts Inc.

January 2nd 2017 marked the 54th anniversary of the organization with the signing of a new long-term lease with the original owners family. Since the day the club opened it has been operated by the Board of Directors of the not-for-profit California Corporation, The Academy of Magical Arts.

6. The Magic Word Podcast - Franz Harary, Rocco And Bruce Gold
--------------------------------------------
Message by Scott Wells, M.I.M.C. with Gold Star

On last week's podcast, we traveled to Macau, China where we had a "feast for the ears" as Franz Harary and Rocco gave us a backstage guided tour of the "House of Magic by Franz Harary". Rocco held one mobile phone with me on one end while Franz held the other phone as he recorded a video of the three theaters, the stage, back stage, dressing room and gift shop. We even wrap up with Rocco performing a little impromptu magic for passersby.

You can watch the video as the audio was being recorded for the podcast, see additional videos of the House of Magic, see some photos, listen to the podcast, hear some product reviews, and download the MP3 file at: https://www.themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/339-house-of-magic-with-franz-and-rocco

On this week's podcast, we follow-up with a chat with Bruce Gold who books the entertainment for the House of Magic by Franz Harary. Bruce recently had a nice gig as an emcee (along with Robert Baxt) for the Rose Parade. Although it was not broadcast more than just a two block area, it sounded like fun. Bruce also has an annual gig at the Academy Awards (the Oscars) where he helps celebrities backstage. He also has some interesting stories that he shares on this podcast. Of course, he also talks about what he is looking for in talent to be considered for performing in Macau at the House of Magic by Franz Harary.

After our chat, we spend a little time following up with Yigal Mesika. He gives us a final update on the settlement of the litigation with Penguin and his "Loops". He also addresses comments made against him on various magic forums. He sets the record straight on his "rights" and his pursuit of protecting his rights.

You can watch a promo video of Bruce, see some photos, read the blog, listen to the podcast, and download the MP3 files at: https://www.themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/340-bruce-gold

This week we also welcome the newest members of the Friends of The Magic Word: Jeroen Wijs, Robert McEntee, and Jonathan Hsu. Thank you, gentlemen, for your financial support. I plan to travel to Las Vegas soon and take my roaming microphone where I hope to chat with quite a few local magicians. I plan to visit their homes, their theaters and their coffee shops where we can spend some quality time talking. In order to help offset expenses for this trip, your financial support would be valued at this time. For more information on how you can help, please visit: https://www.themagicwordpodcast.com/fotmw/

You are at a kid's show and are having a great time when you approach your nesting wands routine. This is the routine that has always played well for you and you simply love doing it. You hand the first wand to the child when all of a sudden the end cap falls off and your wands scatter all over the floor. This certainly is not suppose to happen and you look in shock and think fast what to do. You get through the show and then work as fast as you can to fix the accident from ever happening again. Sound familiar?

What may surprise a lot of you is that I actually LOVE when this stuff happens. I call them Happy Accidents. To me the happy accidents can often be better then what I had originally planned. I am always open to these types of things happening.

Instead of viewing it as an accident, I try and see how the audience reacts to it. In many ways the reactions are huge. If this is the case, then perhaps instead of fixing it so it does not happen again, I do the reverse. I try and rig up ways in which to make it happen all the time.

The bottom line for me is entertainment value. If I can get more Reactions Per Minute (what I call the RPM principle) then that is what I am going to do. If the reactions can be even bigger, then I seek those out as well.

I think too many magicians become blinded. What I mean is that we create a set routine and we tend to stick with it no matter what. We often see mistakes as mistakes and not as golden opportunities that may add to the routine.

To me a routine is never ever finished. It gets to a point where I feel it is ready to perform for an audience. However, it is always evolving and adapting to situations that come up. Sometimes these situations are accidents as described above. Sometimes they are funny things people say or do.

I have trained myself to always be tuned in to these moments. I allow myself to improv off of these situations and then gauge the reactions I get. I have had a nest of wands cap come off and the wands go all over the place before. I think it happens to many folks. However, my facial expressions and the reaction of the helper were precious. The audience went nuts and that led me into improvisation.

I started to pick up the wands and hand them to the helper. As I go to hand it to the child I drop it accidentally but do not see it. I think the child has them all and I look down and they are all still on the ground. It is a classic "see and don't see principle" but it got a huge reaction.

I then proceed to try it again but accidentally allow the biggest wand to drop on my foot causing me to react appropriately. I can then go right into the classic move of giving the kid the wands. It just happens differently. The child still ends up with a wand in each hand and under the arms and under his chin.

In essence this "accident" became something far greater then Kelly and I had planned for the routine. Instead of trying to fix the accident from happening again, we left it in the routine so it happens every time. If we fixed the problem, we would never have realized the potential this accident had for making the routine better and more entertaining for an audience.

So what I am saying is do not always try and fix things you feel are broken. Sometimes these happy accidents are truly blessings in disguise. When they happen learn to play off of them. Gauge the response you get and evaluate it after the show. Perhaps this accident played better then what you had scripted.

This evolution of a routine is what I feel can be the "real" magic.

As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your thoughts. So if you have any thoughts on my articles or suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly at magic4u02@aol.com. I would love to hear from you.

9. Magic On The Mersey
--------------------------------------------
Message by Paul Stone (US)

The new 'Magic on the Mersey' Convention taking place in Liverpool from 12th - 15th September will be different to most other magic conventions and there are many reasons why it will be an event not to be missed.

We are strictly limiting the number of registrations to just 250 to ensure that everyone attending has a good seat for every session, lecture and show and, of even more importance, will have the opportunity to meet and spend quality time with all the artists and lecturers. The headquarters hotel, Jury's Inn offers excellent accommodation and meeting rooms and is located right in the heart of Liverpool's Albert Dock waterfront, where we have set up a special 'Magic on the Mersey' accommodation rate to include full English Breakfast & VAT. There are also a number of other excellent and more economically priced hotels all within a 5 minute walk from Jury's Inn. And the impressive new Liverpool ONE Shopping centre with its fantastic shopping and numerous restaurants is also close by.

Several of the sessions, masterclasses and the Gala Show will take place in the intimate and beautifully restored Epstein Theatre. The line-up of talent is very strong and mainly includes performers who have either never appeared at a British convention before or haven't done so for several years. Performers booked so far include Mike Close, Nick Lewin (his first UK appearance for 40 years!), Armando Lucero, Bob Kohler, Sos & Victoria, Seth Kramer, Marc Paul, Trevor Liley, Kris Kremo, Natalie Enterline and Freddie Davies with more names to follow.

Unlike other convention cities, Liverpool is easily accessible from all parts of the UK. Virgin Trains now operate an hourly service out of London Euston to Liverpool which takes just 2 hours and 10 minutes. And there are very regular express trains from Birmingham, Manchester, the North of England and Scotland, in fact all across the country. Liverpool's main station is a 5 minute cab ride from the convention headquarters hotel. Manchester Airport is less than an hour away and Liverpool Airport is 25 minutes from the Albert Dock. If you haven't been to Liverpool recently you are in for a wonderful surprise, it is now a terrific city and September is a great month to visit. It is still light in the evening and the waterfront is a fun place to walk around, and also hosts the legendary 'Beatles Experience'. And the Cavern Club in Matthew Street is another wonderful photo op.

Included in the registration fee are not one but two parties, a Welcome Party on the first night and a Farewell Party on the final evening.

If you are wondering how we can make 'Magic on the Mersey' such an intimate event and keep the cost down to such a reasonable price, (it is half the price of 'Magic Live' and several of the larger conventions), it is because many of the performers and lecturers are close friends whom I have got to know well over the past 35 years of producing shows, and they want to be part of this new and exciting convention, and they are all keen to visit Liverpool.

If you register and pay £175 in full by 31st January you will automatically qualify for our VIP Package. A non-refundable deposit of £25 will hold your place until 10th February (this will be deducted from the cost of registration when you pay the balance).

If you are still undecided, check out the testimonials on our website but don't wait too long, because we are sure 'Magic on the Mersey' will sell out. It promises to be a magical few days!

With the US Dollar now so strong against the British £ pound, now is a great time to book your trip over to England!

Full details of the performers and how to register are on our website www.magiconthemersey.com

11. The February Issue of Genii
--------------------------------------------
Message by Richard Kaufman (US)

On our cover this month is Katherine Mills, a household name in the U.K., having co-starred in a long-running hidden camera type of TV series about magicians who are disguised as substitute teachers and befuddle their students. She's also the first female magician/mentalist to have had her own TV series, Mind Games. She's an adept magician and her mental work on TV belies the influence of the production company, who also produce Derren Brown's shows. There are also a number of videos of her performing in our digital edition.

On December 1st I attended the last of three shows which Ricky Jay did in New York City. His performing style has evolved over the years, a natural thing with age (and a good thing, too-there's nothing worse than seeing a senior citizen pretending to still be 20). He received a standing ovation and I'll tell you why in this issue.

We have an abundance of excellent columns this month with something for everyone. Jim Steinmeyer's "Conjuring" explains "Mad Marketing," a stand-up or stage mentalism effect that's easy to do. * In "Cardopolis" David Britland teaches his Spin Change, a visual color change of a card as it spins in the outer end of the deck. * In the "Chamber of Secrets" John Gaughan makes a dove and a cannonball transpose. * In "DaOrtiz ala Carte!" Dani DaOrtiz describes "Four Coincidences." A wonderful effect. * Harrison Greenbaum continues his elucidations of how comedy can be used in magic in "You are all Terrible!" This month Harrison delves into the construction of jokes in magic. * Helder Guimarães offers a bold and deceptive handling of the classic "Pocket Interchange" plot. Using no difficult sleight of hand, his "One Clean Transposition" may well find its way into your repertoire. * Why Zombies Attack is the catchy title of David Kaye's column on children's magic this month in "The Expert at the Kids' Table." David's unique understanding of the psychology of his audience is no full display as he attempts to corral the little zombies into being an attentive audience. * Tom Stone does what he does best: invent! In this month's "Lodestones" he creates a new routine. It's a classic - a stand-up beauty worth the price of your subscription to the performer who uses it. And it requires … a Change Bag! * Eugene Burger's entry into his notebook this month talks about how to build a coherent show, accompanied by a video in our digital edition. * Bob Read's escapades as a collector and observer of the absurdity of life continue in this month's "Hidden Treasures." * Harry Riser died in December, and his friend and student Johnny Thompson memorializes him. * Todd Karr covers magic world-wide in "The Eye"; Jon Racherbaumer covers literature relating to magic in "On the Slant"; Daniel Ulin covers life at mecca in "Knights at The Magic Castle"; David Oliver, Joe M. Turner, and David Britland cover the latest tricks, videos, and books in "Light from the Lamp".

Subscribe for as little as $35 a year and you can buy the $95 book "The Vernon Touch" for only $25 plus postage.

Message by Colin Underwood

I have started contributing articles to Vanish Magazine as from January. This will continue through the year.

I am writing on Character performances. This will entail all aspects of the work. From choosing a character, developing this character to other important aspects such as costuming, music, and of course the type of magic suitable for this type of performance. I will contribute photographs from my own performances as well as video to help enhance these articles.
I have been performing characters for over 35 years and have developed different types for corporate clients and the casinos. I have over 20 different characters that I have developed with my crazy business man being in the forefront as well as my latest, Yuri the waiter.

Both are extensions of my early clown days in shopping malls across South Africa and the Middle East, I performed so often at these venues, so much so that I had an article in Magic Magazine calling me King of the Mall.

I know as a magician my magic is much stronger as a character and even if you don't become a character performer the principles are very useful in general shows, especially children's performers and atmosphere performers.

I hope you find this of interest and should you want to include this in one of the future editions, feel free to do so.
