The Society of American Magicians - The Magic Compass

On September 1, 1949, Edward W. Thomas was given the gift of life. On January 28, 2017 he had to give it back. Ed was a Past National President of The Society of American Magicians, but he also wore many other hats by holding offices, both local and national. He was a S.A.M. Life Member, Chairman of the S.A.M Magic Endowment Fund, President of the Magic Hall of Fame, a member and an Officer of Assembly 22 in Los Angeles as well as Editor of the Assembly Newsletter. In addition to this Ed was also a member of the Academy of Magical Arts at The Magic Castle, a Magic Circle member who had achieved the rank of A.I.M.C. with a Silver Star and was both a magician and an actor. Ed died from a heart attack while in the hospital being treated for influenza.

Ed Thomas was inaugurated as President of The Society of American Magicians at the Centennial Convention in New York in 2002 but his history as a magician began many years earlier. At ten, he got his first magic set and by the fifth grade he was performing for the public. He and a friend (who served as his "assistant") walked around the neighborhood, knocking on doors to announce that they would be doing a magic show that afternoon. This led to magic performances at family gatherings, birthday parties and at talent shows. While in High School, his parents made his magic books and props "disappear" until he was in Graduate School.

In addition to being a magician, Ed was also an actor with a wide range. He would tackle a tragic role in one production and seamlessly move on to comedy in the next. In 1982, Thomas was hired as an actor by the Mountaineer Players Melodrama Company in Colorado and upon returning to Los Angeles, he would work for The Glendale Center Theater, The Sierra Madre Playhouse, The Granada Theater and many other Community Theaters across southern California.

Of course, Ed's first and lasting theatrical love was The Art of Magic. His dedication to The Society of American Magicians was unparalleled and a week before his passing he was in Omaha for what would be his last National Council Meeting. At S.A.M. meetings he was the man that kept his head when others got overly excited. He would focus the group with his insights and his counsel. All the S.A.M. National Presidents that followed Ed owe him a debt of gratitude as he was the one that taught them about the traditions and customs of The Society.

In the July 2002 issue of M-U-M Magazine John U. Zweers wrote; "If ever a man was qualified by personal characteristics, hard-won experience and by abilities to lead us into the second century of The Society of American Magician's existence, this is the one. He appreciates and preserves the past, has helped build the present and possesses the vision and the moderation to provide a safe and harmonious future." This exemplified Ed Thomas in 2002 and still exemplified him at last week's National Council Meeting, in 2017.
Rest in Peace Ed, the rest of us will try to follow your lead.

4. The Magic Word Podcast - Paul Romhany
--------------------------------------------
Message by Scott Wells, M.I.M.C. with Gold Star

Paul Romhany is the editor and publisher of VANISH, a wonderful digital magazine for magicians. Unless you have been living under a rock for the past five years or you are new to magic, you are already a subscriber. But this week we talk with the man behind the scene (or between the covers) as he tells us how the magazine came about and how he keeps up with the deadlines. VANISH recently went from a bi-monthly publication to a monthly magazine which speeds up deadlines.

In our conversation Paul talks about working on cruise ships, creating new ideas, writing books (including "cat readings" on reading your cat's paw), and how he developed his character, Charlie Chaplin which he does on stage and close-up. After a brief word from The Great American Magic Company (our sponsor) midway through out conversation, Paul returns to talk about VANISH. We conclude this week's podcast with a product review of the first two discs from the four disc DVD set from Juan Luis Rubiales called "Ole!"

You can watch a video of Paul as Charlie Chaplin, see some photos, read the blog, enter the contest, hear the product reviews, listen to the podcast, and download the MP3 files at: https://www.themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/342-paul-romhany You can also listen on iTunes, Stitcher, Tunein, Feedpress and other "podcatchers".

We are extending the contest for another week to give more people a chance to win a copy of "Danny Archer Goes Mental" eBook. Since this is an eBook that can be downloaded, the contest is open to everyone regardless where you live in the world. For more information on what is in the eBook, please visit: http://dannyarcher.com/Pages/Tricks.htm#Danny_Archer_goes_Mental

Also on this week's blog is a return to "Meals With Magicians", a chat with Walter "Zaney" Blaney. This is separate from our regular podcast and is an irregular feature which I add to the blog from time to time when I record conversations during meals I enjoy with magicians. You can subscribe to "Meals With Magicians" on Spreaker.com so you can be notified when these podcasts come available. 5. Audience Manipulation - #432 - Kyle Peron

Here is a topic many of you have experienced time and time again but may not have ever been aware of. It is something that we each experience but don't realize it when it is really happening to us. Is there such a way in which a magician can essentially, by definition, manipulate the audience's emotional and moral reactions to what they are viewing? Is there a way in which a magician can change the way the audience responds to what they are seeing on stage? This is the art of audience manipulation and the subject I would like to try and discuss a bit more.

This all came about when I finished watching a movie and stopped to think that my emotions were changed drastically from the start of the movie to what I was feeling at that moment. It was a weird experience for me. Most of the time, and I am sure many can relate to this, we just watch a movie and do not think about how we react to it at all. For some reason that day I did stop and started thinking about this a lot.

I realized that here was something so strong and powerful that it could be used as an ultimate tool in any magician or manipulators tool box. I realized that before the movie started I was feeling pretty stressed out and upset about issues from work. As the movie progressed I realized that my own emotions and attitudes were changing as I was watching what was happening on the screen. I laughed, I felt sadness, I was angry and all these things were happening directly to me without me ever really being aware that it was occurring in the first place. WOW! If a movie can manipulate how I felt, could this really be carried over to magical performance or manipulative acts? It got me really thinking.

I then realized that this theory is nothing new but perhaps it is new when applied to the art of magic. I realized that this idea of audience manipulation occurs in literature and poetry all the time. You read a book and as you read it mental images appear in your mind. The words on the page create thought and images but they also create emotional responses to. We can have a book or word manipulate the way we are thinking at any given time. Poetry is based on this idea alone.

Well if theater, movies and literature can directly apply this audience manipulation concept, why could it not be applied to the magical arts? I thought about this a lot and realized maybe that some are using this but a majority simply don't because they are not tuned into it or even aware of the fact that this can happen and be used to create full magical moments for their audiences.

So why do we as manipulators of magic not use this wonderful device that is used so commonly in the areas I described above? Well maybe it is in part due to the nature of magic in general and how many of us come to find it. I think many magicians get so locked up into the object and trick part of what magic is. We get hung up on the mechanics and the techniques if you will and that is what fascinates us the most.

If this is the case, then it can be safe to say that it transcends itself into our performances. We get hung up on the objects and moves that we end up performing mainly for ourselves. We do the moves to impress our inner ego that we can do these hard moves. We then go for the "wow" factor that our inner ego screams for.

Perhaps also, it can be said that we do not utilize audience manipulation because we are also hung up on the fact that the audience is the audience and we are the magician. There is that idea and notion that you are on stage and they are in the seats and this invisible wall that exists should not be broken. We do not realize that we can reach out into the audience and directly manipulate them as well. It never crosses our minds because we are too busy concentrating on the manipulation of the objects of magic… whether they be cards, balls and so forth.

I started thinking about this new device of audience manipulation and wondered what it could do for any performer if used properly and if added as another tool in our magic arsenal. What could we do if we stopped to realize that we can break down that wall between performer and audience and instead of just manipulating the objects in our hands, we also, through our actions, can cause the audience to be manipulated as well. Could the audience really become another object a magician could manipulate just as easily as a deck of playing cards? It is a fascinating thought if one stops to think about it.

I think using this idea of audience manipulation can be such a powerful tool. Why wouldn't any magician want the ability to control the way an audience feels or thinks at any given moment in their act or show? Instead of the audience just watching the magic and applauding its skillful value, they could be directly involved in the magic actually taking place. They could be brought into the magic. They could be caused to directly experience an emotion or feeling based directly on what the magician is doing. In this way the magician really is manipulating how the audience should feel at any given moment in the act/show. Pretty powerful stuff if one starts to think about it and adapt it.

But how do you apply this? Well once again I like to say that the answer lies in stepping away from magic. Look at what already does this well. Look at movies, theater, and books and poetry. Start to realize what is happening to you as you watch or read these things. What are you thinking and why are you thinking it? Are you starting to feel a different way at a certain point? Chances are the answer is yes and when you think about it you can often find out why.

In a lot of cases it can be a combination of music, words being spoken or even the lighting or the movement. Cinema and theater does this all so well. When you see the phantom of the opera you are made to feel fear due in part to the music being played and the lighting changing. The posture of the character changes with it and the words spoken may be more harsh and drawn out. All of these elements start to cause the audience to be manipulated into feeling a certain way.

So if this is the case, let us as magicians use these devices used in other art forms. Let us grab a hold of them and apply them to our magic. Let the audience be manipulated to be drawn into the magic you are presenting.

If the audience can feel sadness when you want them to or feel joy or amazement when you create it for them, isn't that bringing your magic to an entirely new level? To me it brings it to a new art form entirely. It grows the art of magic. It changes it for the better.

As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your thoughts. So if you have any thoughts on my articles or suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly at

6. Steve Valentine's New Show Extends
--------------------------------------------
Message by Steve Valentine (US)

Actor Steve Valentine's (The Walk, Crossing Jordan) risky return to his live performing roots pays off with stellar reviews, sold-out houses and nightly standing ovations, but putting that much truth on stage wasn't easy.

Life and Other Deceptions blasts the lid off Steve's journey as an actor and magician through Hollywood as a naive 20 year old arriving in L.A. in 1989, facing obstacles, brick walls, temptations and tough decisions, yet often finding beauty and grace among the minefield that is La La Land.

The show takes a fuses magic, hilarious comedy and theatrical drama taking a stage show to an entirely new level. Pauline Adamek at Arts Beat LA called it "Dazzling, hilarious, fast-paced & introspective." And social media has been flooded with comments, like from author Kim Gruenenfelder Smith who posted "it's the best one man show I've seen in 15 years".

"The response has been overwhelming", says Steve, "I'm so grateful, and thrilled that this story touches people. Many leave the theatre chanting the theme, #magicisreal, some have said they've felt hope for the first time in a long time".

That's a lot to get out of an autobiographical, theatrical one-man magic show, but based on the social media response it's hitting home, far more than Steve could have hoped.

But he wasn't always sure that being alone on stage for two hours, weaving his words and magic in a way that animates the storytelling would work. "I was terrified it would all crash and burn" Steve says "yes it's a showbiz story, but will people relate, will anyone give a damn? I think what works is, that in the end, it's a human story. The world is so divisive right now and yet Life and Other Deceptions is about how we are all connected, all on the same journey, and how we often feel lost. Maybe it's just the right time for this."

"I wanted it to be an evening with heart and flow and energy and laughter that grabs the audience, shakes them, embraces them and says, hey we all have dreams and we're all going through stuff, its ok."

But to do that Steve had to be real and honest, two words not exactly synonymous with Hollywood. He dug deep, exposed demons he'd repressed for years, and in embracing and shining a spotlight on them, discovered he wasn't alone. "It was like 20 years of therapy jammed into 6 months. I highly recommend it."

And something else happened, in facing his past his past faced him right back. People with vast, distant and varied connections to Steve serendipitously appeared in the audience, one actress friend who Steve lost touch with 30 years ago was in town from the UK and decided to a buy a ticket, which was wild because he actually quotes her in the show. "It's been wonderfully strange, it's like the world is saying welcome back."

So, how does he achieve such level of depth with a magic show? You have to see it to believe it. Which now you can do because the show has been extended due to audience demand.

What's next for show? Extended dates, a tour, a Life and Other Deceptions TV special and hopefully getting the message out to as many people as possible. We are all connected, magic is real.

Life and Other Deception is written and performed by Steve Valentine,
Directed by Chipper Lowell and Exec Produced by James Baron

8. Nick Lewin's Ultimate Electric Chair And Paper Ball Over Head
--------------------------------------------
Message by Paul Romhany

This is without a doubt one of the best audience participation routines you are ever going to find. Many years ago I got to see Nick perform this live in Las Vegas in a showroom and it really killed. For years I wanted to do this myself but never did because it was not my routine. I ended up just performing the paper balls over the head, and while it got laughs it never got the reaction that the electric chair got.

Watching this was like having Nick in your own living room teaching it you personally. Over two hours of every nuance and bit of business you can imagine. There are a variety of live performances and Nick talks in detail about the various handlings that you can perform. Lewin covers everything from how to handle microphones to making the spectator feel at ease on stage and give nothing away during the first part of the routine.

While the blurb says this effect is not cheap I would disagree. I would say for $99 you are actually getting a full routine that you will put in your act and keep it there forever. It's the perfect routine for corporate situations especially when asked to do something with a certain person, or even a birthday party type routine for adults. Nick has a way about him that allows him to come off a little cheeky without embarrassing the spectator on stage at all.

The detail that Nick gives out here in incredible. He has put this through every working condition and is able to share his knowledge with us. I dare say he knows more about this than Ken Brooke did when he first taught it to Nick and Paul Daniels.

For me, the best part of the routine is that is uses no props, except for 13 napkins and a regular chair. It's all about presentation and of course handling. This could in fact be the ultimate routine for corporate magicians and cruise ship magicians. I would say certainly for anybody how performs any type of comedy magic. I've even seen magicians do this who have no sense of comedy at all, yet they are able to get laughs with this routine.

Nick really has left a legacy with this DVD, both for himself and for Ken Brooke. If you do any type of adult work then I strongly urge you to get this product. It has become the signature trick of several famous magicians and can now be yours. As a bonus you also get a PDF with original notes made by Ken to Nick on this, as well as photos from the very first cruise ship Nick performed on doing this very routine in the 70s.

As for me I can now finally perform this routine after seeing it almost 20 years ago now. It has lived with me for all those years knowing I could never do it because it was not on the market and was a signatures of Nicks. My suggestion when you purchase this is to sit in a quiet place for 2 hours and give this the time it deserves. You will be left with one of the best investments in a routine you probably ever made.

PRICE: $99 US including shipping in USA.

Talking with crazy magician The Amazing Jonathan on living on borrowed time

By Edward Pevos

Detroit, MI - He's a little eccentric at his magic shows. Ok, he's a lot eccentric. We caught up with crazy comedy magician The Amazing Jonathan, who's currently living on borrowed time.

He's made people laugh and cringe for more than 30 years, which included an 11 year residency in Las Vegas. It's rare to see him perform nowadays as doctors gave the Fraser, Michigan native a little more than a year to live a few years ago due to a heart condition. Despite his health status, he's back home for three nights at Mark Ridley's Comedy Castle on Feb. 2, 3 & 4, 2017 for just $30 a ticket.

We talked about what he's been up to since receiving the grim news from his doctors as he's literally cheated death. You can watch the full MLive interview in the video above.
Again, you can see The Amazing Jonathan at four rare performances. He's at Mark Ridley's Comedy Castle in Royal Oak on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, Feb. 2, 3 & 4, 2017. Tickets are $30 and can be purchased here.

http://comedycastle.com/event.cfm?id=468271

Adults only.

Showtimes are Thursday at 7:30pm, Friday at 7:15pm and Saturday at 7pm and 9:30pm.
