Message by Scott Wells, M.I.M.C. with Gold Star

Mike Segal was the camp organizer and chief "cook and bottle washer" for the summer camp for magicians called, "Sorcerer's Safari". This camp, located in Canada, hosted youngsters from around the world for 20 years with well-known magic counselors like Joshua Jay, Lee Asher, Johnny "Ace" Palmer, Eric Jones, and many, many others.

Unfortunately, the camp has come to an end. But for those who might like to know more about its history or perhaps might like to replicate the camp, you will enjoy this week's podcast.

It was a recent drive to a magic convention that got me thinking of this topic. I realized just how much driving has changed over the years. Before the dawn of GPS, I would often take a map with me and take the most common route. Highways and roads traveled by many, became the "safe" way to go. As I traveled with my GPS to the convention, I realized how much it has made me take roads less traveled before.

By listening to my GPS I could take roads I would not have normally ventured down. But as I traveled down these old country roads, my mind opened up and my eyes were seeing wonderful things I have not seen before. I was enjoying the experience because I was not seeing the same old thing. Magic can and should be very much like this trip I took.

I realize just how often magicians in general take the safe passage or the safe road when venturing down any path with their magic. Whether it is creating a new routine for a show or learning a new act, we tend to often travel down the same paths others before us have taken. I think we do this because 1) It is all we know and 2) it is a much safer way to go. We feel safe and secure knowing others have blazed the path before us.

But is this the right thing to do? Is this allowing us to grow in the art of magic? I would have to say no. I think it hinders a person's creative growth. By traveling down the same path as other magicians, you will be seeing what they see and doing what they do. In many ways it is a dangerous way of developing routines that really are not true to who you are.

We each are unique and we each have our own character and personalities on stage. Many of us try and do routines based on what we have seen along this road that we travel on. If we are all traveling the same road, then we cannot help but to develop similar styles or routines that are the same as others. But what happens is that you are 1) not finding yourself or staying true to yourself as a performer and 2) you are not pushing yourself enough to grow creatively.

Think about it this way. If you take a trip and take a road that many have not taken before, don't you start to become more aware? Suddenly you are forced to see things in a new way. You are forced to be more alert and to see things that you may not have seen before. A heavily traveled road makes us blind but a less traveled road makes us aware.

Do not fear to venture on another road or another path with your magic. Do not fear going down a different avenue with a routine or a new magical idea. It may be frightening at first because you have no idea where it may lead, but that is and can be the beauty of it all. Beauty is allowing yourself to take these trips to see what comes of it. In many cases, by doing so, you are experiencing great things and your creativity can not help but to be heightened.

Some of the most creative minds in our art come from those who you realize think differently than the norm. Instead of traveling down the same roads, they chose to go a different direction. Instead of taking the easy and fast highway, they chose to take the back-country road. Now sure it may take them longer to get there, but guaranteed they see more than we do and they learn a lot more as well. The result is awareness and creative thought.

Try this sometime soon. It really does work and helps you to see exactly what I am referring to. I call it a creativity road trip. If you have a GPS this is even better. However, a good map will also do you just fine. Pick a place you have never been to. Plug that into your GPS and just start to drive. It sounds silly or maybe even a bit scary, but trust me here.

The idea is that you are going to a place you have never been to or experienced before. You are getting there often times via roads you have not traveled on before. Because of this new destination, you are forcing your mind and your body to be more aware and more alert.

As you drive start to notice the things around you. Take in the sites and the scenery. Feel free to stop at the shops along the way. Enjoy and notice how your mind is becoming more alert and aware of new things it is seeing. It has to because it is being bombarded with new sensory impressions. This is what total creativity is about.

A trip like this opens your mind because it forces you to. But it also allows you start appreciating taking roads less traveled. The next time you have a choice of taking your magic down a road that others have gone on, say no. Instead take a different path. I am sure the trip you take will be much more rewarding.

As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your thoughts. So if you have any thoughts on my articles or suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly at magic4u02@aol.com. I would love to hear from you.

Event Industry News

By Adam Parry

UK -- Thousands of magicians are set to travel to Blackpool this month for their annual convention at Winter Gardens, Blackpool.

The event, which is being staged by the Blackpool Magicians' Club from February 16-19, is the world's largest convention of its kind.

This year the club is celebrating 75 years since it was formed in 1941 and has grown to be one of the most respected and influential magic clubs in the world. Visitors travel from as far afield as China and America to attend.

With over 3,500 magicians expected to attend this year's event, the club members work together to present the annual event and have since achieved an accolade in the Guinness Book of Records as the world's biggest and most attended Magic Convention.

Alan Horne, spokesperson from Blackpool Magicians Club, said: "With Blackpool being the entertainment capital of the UK this convention has grown from a small one-day event to the world's largest Magic Convention.

"Our visitors come from all over the world as Blackpool has the appeal to offer a friendly atmosphere and ideal location with everything they need for the annual 'magicians holiday'.

"The Winter Gardens is a stunning venue and large enough to accommodate us all under one roof."

The Blackpool Magic Convention showcases over 100 UK and international magic dealers, world-class close-up magicians, lecturers and stage performers. In 2012, the Blackpool Magicians' Club were honoured to host the FISM World Championships of Magic and following its success, this year they are delighted to be hosting the FISM European Magical Championships.

The talented and world renowned English stage and TV magician Paul Zenon will appear at this year's convention; he has performed on various entertainment shows, specialising in illusion and escapology.

Also appearing is the talented Jamie Allan who has been described as the Harry Houdini of the 21st Century; he fuses magic with technology, performing and designing incredible modern illusions with iPads, Holograms and Laser Beams. Jamie has starred as a mentor on ITV1 in the Prime-Time Show "Get Your Act Together" and in 2016 he has appeared as special guest star on 'Michael McIntyre's Big Show'.

Cllr Gillian Campbell, Deputy Leader of Blackpool Council, said: 'We are delighted to see that the Magicians' Convention is to once again take place here in Blackpool.

"The show provides a great boost to the local economy; February is usually a quiet month for most seaside resorts but events like this proves that Blackpool is open for business all year round.

"I'm thrilled to congratulate the Blackpool Magicians Club on their 75th anniversary of the Club; this is truly a fantastic achievement and we hope to see the event return for years to come."

This year's event will feature world-class artists from across the globe and here are just a few of this year's artists: Yan Yan Ma, who performs an outstanding magic and ballet performance; magic legend Finn Jon; after a very long overdue return, the world's greatest living bar magician Doc Eason will be tipping the secrets to a lifetime of incredible magic; rising star Eric Jones; illusionist duo Ta Na Manga from Portugal and award-winning magician Vlad, will be on-hand presenting incredible sleight of FOOT!

David Copperfield: How He Became The World's Most Successful Magician

By Dan Schawbel

Contributor

I spoke to David Copperfield, the most commercially successful magician in history, about his early influences, what keeps him motivated to continue to perform after years of magic, how he comes up with new tricks and his best career advice.

Copperfield is currently performing at the MGM Resorts in Las Vegas. His television specials have won 21 Emmy Awards of a total 38 nominations. Best known for his combination of storytelling and illusion, Copperfield's career of over 40 years has earned him 11 Guinness World Records, a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, a knighthood by the French government, and he has been named a Living Legend by the U.S. Library of Congress. He has so far sold 33 million tickets and grossed over $4 billion, which is more than any other solo entertainer in history. When not performing, he manages his chain of eleven resort islands in the Bahamas.

David Copperfield: My influences weren't magicians in the classic sense, but the great MGM stars like Gene Kelly and Fred Astaire. Frank Sinatra was a huge influence. If only I could sing! I also studied the great film directors. Capra. Hitchcock. Victor Fleming. Orson Welles.
I loved magic of course, but it was sort of in a stasis when I was a kid. Being a magician meant wearing tails and saying nothing and making birds appear. Having role models from the cinema turned out to be a good thing for me, because I was inspired to bring storytelling to magic, romance, choreography - all the elements of film and theater that I loved. My initial contribution was to add romance, suspense, and narrative to my work.

The Midwest's Premier Magic Convention
May 19th, 20th, 21st, 2017
Des Moines, Iowa
www.AbraCORNdabra.com

This is one of the Magic Conventions Lance Burton recommends! He even talked about it while on stage at Magic LIVE in Las Vegas!

Registrations may be made via our website:
www.AbraCORNdabra.com

Registration for Spouse or Parent/Guardian is always $99.00

Young Magicians aged 20 or younger, may register for $100.

Young magicians may also perform in our exclusive "Kernels Young Magicians Showcase Show".

We do offer a special free registration to Magi aged 20 or younger!

We are the only Magic Convention in the World to offer this!

Young magicians actually perform magic to raise money to attend the convention!

We have two performance magic levels we offer everyone!
(No matter what age they may be, as long as they are 20 or younger)

* First completed level gets a young magician free registration.
* Second completed level gets a young magician a free hotel room, (with a registered ADULT Magician, parent, or guardian), AND a $50 free gift card to the World's FIRST & ONLY "magiK-MART" Spectacular Dealer's Room.
(Featuring "Blue Light Specials" throughout the convention!)

So what makes AbraCORNdabra the Midwest's premier Magic Convention?

This is NOT your average Magic Convention!

* Unique Shows, displays, events, lectures, and activities rarely (if
ever) seen at other conventions.

* Registrations are limited to no more than 200 attendees. Once we sell the 200th registration - we are full - no registrations will be sold after that time!

* Due to the small amount of registrations offered - each and every attendee is treated as a V.I.P. - with plenty of one-on-one time with the magic stars!

* Free gifts, snacks, pizza & pop parties, etc are given throughout the convention, including the first ever S.A.M. & I.B.M. hosted parties side-by-side with both Presidents of those fine Magic Organizations hosting the parties themselves! (S.A.M. - Jeff Quinn & I.B.M. - Oscar Munoz)

* Featuring more than 10 of the top names in magic during this three day convention - you never know who you will see at the convention!
