Syfy's
'The Magicians' does 'some g*ddamn magic' at Brooklyn installation
By
Proma Khosla
In the first episode of Syfy's The Magicians, Quentin Coldwater
(Jason Ralph) walks into a shadowed corner of his city and
ends up in a magical new world. The same is now possible
for fans of the show and Lev Grossman's original book series
who walk to the sparse corner of Wythe Avenue and 12th street
in Brooklyn, where the doors of the William Vale open to
reveal a world of magic and mystery.
The
Hall of Magic features 10 rooms of immersive exhibitions
to simulate the world of The Magicians, and Mashable got
an exclusive sneak peek at the construction of this epic
exhibition.

4. Want To Be A KEA Lecturer?
--------------------------------------------
Message by Julian Mather (US)
Have
you got valuable knowledge locked inside your head that
other kids entertainers would benefit from? Can you communicate
this knowledge clearly? Do you want to improve the lives
of fellow entertainers?
If
you have a quality lecture for Kids Entertainers, then you
might be suitable for one of our paid lecture slots.
This
is open to both experienced lecturers and new lecturers
alike.
Experienced
Lecturers note:
What
we don't want is product demonstrations. What we do is not
a digital version of dragging a suitcase full of props to
a convention, setting up a table and selling via demonstration.
That's not to say you can't promote your brand and services
and products at the end of the lectures. You can. There
must be a theme for your lecture and you must deliver this
theme with conviction. You want to give people a hand up,
not burden them with more stuff they will never use. You
want to be able to give more than you ask in return.
New
lecturers note:
We
welcome new lecturers. You do not need to have previous
experience. You do not need to have extensive experience.
You simply need to know something that fellow entertainers
would benefit from knowing. Send your idea in and remember
this: If we say no, that does not mean no forever. It simply
means not right now. With some extra tweaks and effort,
it may well be a stand out lecture in time to come.
Here's
a summary of the process:
Create
an online lecture for us from your content that runs 40
minutes. This will be pre-recorded. Think of it as having
a Skype call with me and we record it. I say hello to everyone,
I introduce you, then I hand over to you. You have a pre-made
set of slides that people see and a small window appears
with you in the corner of the frame. You can read your notes
as you go. There is nothing hard or scary about this. We
will be there to jump in if there are any difficulties.
The slide pack you make will also be made available to members
as a download. We take care of ALL the technical aspects.
We provide you with simple training to prepare you to shine.
You also need to do a 20-30-minute podcast interview with
us for the Kids Entertainer podcast. This is just a chat.
No vision. Just audio. No preparation required. We use this
to promote your upcoming lecture in KEA.
Who
Gets What?
We
pay you our set rate.
You
get extra exposure to our audience of many thousands.
We
provide links from the lecture page to one or two websites
you nominate.
Your
lecture gets added to our lecture archive which is available
24/7 to all KEA paid members. We have the rights to use
content to promote this lecture.
We
will not take your intellectual property and create any
sort of stand-alone course etc. Simply, we do business honourably.
This
all leads to a good and long term relationship that is win/win.
Ken
and I are in this for the long haul. Want to work with us?
Then show us what you've got.

5. Working Scout Events All Year - #434 - Kyle Peron

The great thing about the scout market is that you do not
have to limit yourself to working just the yearly banquet.
There is a golden secret I would like to share with you
that has tremendous value. It is something that can keep
you working the market all year, provide a valued service
and no one is doing it. Allow me to share the concept with
you in hopes that it may open your own eyes to the possibilities.
By
contacting and talking with various Boy and Girl Scout Councils,
I realized that both organizations have badges or awards
that can be earned for doing and learning about magic. Sometimes
these are referred to as merit badges but may be called
different things in various scout councils. The key point
is knowing that they do exist and that scouts can work towards
earning this badge.
If
you are keyed into problem solving for your clients, then
this raises a wonderful opportunity for you the entertainer.
You have the ability to create a full scout program (meeting)
for the scout packs or even girl Scout troops.
The
idea here is to provide a full meeting for the pack or troop
that you provide for them. You provide a 30-minute magic
show followed by a teaching workshop and then end with a
question and answer session. The beauty of this is that
everything you do is helping the Scouts earn their magic
badge or award.
In
the minds of the Scout Leaders and Councils, this has amazing
power and benefit for them. It serves a purpose far greater
than just entertainment alone. Now you are providing a service
that empowers the Scouts and gets them working towards something
they can feel good about. It also allows you to charge more
for the service and gets you to perform all year long performing
this program for various cub packs and girl scout troops
in and around your area.
I
started doing this a few years ago and the Scout Councils
simply love it. In fact I have even had Scout Councils team
up and bring together many packs and troops together and
make a full afternoon event just from my program alone.
What
you teach needs to be easy items with stuff around the house
that also empowers instead of frustrating. I usually do
a floating pencil effect and also jumping rubber bands are
very easy to do and I can provide the props for the scouts
to keep at next to nothing in cost. Both are tricks the
kids can do with ease and gets them excited about magic.
If
I have large groups, I teach the effects to the Scout Leaders
ahead of time and then have them assist me with the hands-on
portion of the teaching workshop. This is great to do because
it gets the Leaders directly involved in the teaching of
the Scouts and empowers them as well. Allow the Scouts to
keep the items to take home with them.
The
question and answer part of the program brings the kids
back to the front area as you talk briefly about the history
of magic and the importance of keeping the secret, practice
and entertainment value. You can then allow the scouts to
ask questions that they may have and answer them for them.
You then wrap up the program by thanking everyone.
It
is a great opportunity that no one is doing and can allow
you to really tap into this market in your own area and
work it all year. a quick call to your local Scout Council
can gain you great information that you can use to build
your own magic program that is geared at directly helping
Scouts to earn their magic badge.
I
hope this gets you seeing the incredible value in how you
can work scout events not only in the standard months. You
can develop a show that is booked by many troops and packs
all year and gain you great income in the process. I cover
off on a lot more of this in the book and just wanted to
share some of it with you all. Thanks again so much for
your patronage and emails about the book.
As
always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your
thoughts. So if you have any thoughts on my articles or
suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly
at magic4u02@aol.com. I would love to hear from you.

I would like to let everyone know that my book and E-Book:
"Blue and Gold! The Complete Guide to Working The Scout
Market!" is now available as a soft cover printed book
as well as an eBook download.

There
seems to be a recent outbreak of good magicians performing
one-man shows. We've covered several of these recently and
will do more in the coming months. This issue we focus on
Steve Valentine's Life and Other Deceptions, which started
its Los Angeles run in December and has just extended with
dates in late February (you can purchase tickets at http://stevevalentinelive.com/).
It's
an autobiographical show with magic in the mix, and as you
read the article you can't help but be swept up by Valentine's
enthusiasm for the show. Chris Philpott, who worked on the
script with Steve, pens the article. Steve likes vintage
props and methods, something he has in common with Dr. Ricardo
Rosenkranz, whose own show The Rosenkranz Mysteries (in
Chicago), began its run-in December and has also been extended
into February. Dr. Rosenkranz also uses many vintage props,
but while Steve is an experienced actor and magician, Dr.
Rosencrantz is a full-time medical professional whose hobby
of magic has blossomed into a full-blown show. It is also
somewhat autobiographical, written with Eugene Burger. As
much as both shows have in common, they are equally different.
Danny Orleans takes us behind the scenes of The Rosenkranz
Mysteries.
Our
columns this month include Mike Caveney's "Classic
Correspondence" (Alexander Herrmann fans take note),
John Bannon's "Dealing with It" (John Bannon fans
take note, and watch the video), Hannibal's "Happiness
is the Road" (fans of good storytelling take note),
Jeff Prace's "Left-Handed" (chewing gum fans take
note and watch the video), Martin Lewis's "Making Magic"
(James Bond fans take note), Kainoa Harbottle's "By
Means of Metal" (those who enjoy being taught the theory
and methodology behind coin magic by a loquacious man with
a doctorate in Victorian literature take note
and
watch the video), John Guastaferro's "Magicana"
(those who simply like great tricks taught well, and fans
of Bob Farmer, take note), and of course Todd Karr looks
at you, Jon Racherbaumer talks to you, Daniel Ulin gets
excited at you, and we tie it all up with reviews of videos,
books, and tricks by Nathan Coe Marsh, Tom Frame, and Danny
Orleans.

7. Britain's Got Talent: Disastrous Act Gone Wrong

Britain's
Got Talent: Disastrous act gone wrong causes chaos on set.
A
Britain's Got Talent contestant almost blew all the electrics
when his water-tank escape act went disastrously wrong.
Illusionist
Matt Johnson had hoped to wow everyone with a breathtaking
stunt for the ITV show.
He
planned to chain himself up, lower himself into a tank full
of water then miraculously break free before running out
of air. But his spectacular act was hit by a jinx.
The
weight of water cracked the tank and sent thousands of litres
of water flooding all over the stage. Panic-stricken TV
chiefs evacuated the venue fearing the water would come
in contact with the electric equipment surrounding the stage
and start a blaze.

10. New Edition To The Floating Table
--------------------------------------------
Message by Dirk Losacker (US)
I
just came up with a new edition to the floating table where
the table can vanish at the end do you think you can include
this in your newsletter.
Here
is the link
https://youtu.be/eiQaZwzfZak
Losander
created the floating table 23 years ago. Right from the
start he imagined that the table would vanish at the end.
After 20 years of trial and error, he created the Mirage
table. This table functions and performs like all the other
tables. No restriction of the original routine. But after
the table has landed you cover up the table under full view,
without switching or changing anything on the table.
Then
as you lift the table off the ground and rip the cloth away,
the table is completely vanished. The beautiful part is
Losander has created this illusion so you can perform it
under almost any conditions even surrounded. He did over
1500 shows with the table you see in the video and the table
still looks like new. Every table is build by Losander himself
and signed and tested. It takes 3 weeks to build this table
from start to finish.
The
table comes with everything you need to perform the illusion.
Not only that you get an amazing prop, it also comes with
hands on teaching included in the price. Every table comes
with a lifelong support and if anything where to go wrong
Losander will exchange broken parts for free. This ultimate
mirage floating table is a must have for everyone who wants
to have an unforgettable ending in their show.

on all parts.
