3. The Magic Word Podcast - A Magician Prepares And Terry Herbert
--------------------------------------------
Message by Scott Wells, M.I.M.C. with Gold Star

Last week I featured a chat with Joshua Stenkamp and Jason Wethington about their new book, "A Magician Prepares - Act One: Interviews". I liked the premise of this book from the start in that essentially it is like reading a podcast. Each chapter is like a shortened version of The Magic Word Podcast in that there is the set-up where you feel as if you are going with the author(s) to visit the guest then the actual interview then concluding with comments about the chat and heading home or back to the hotel and preparing for the next interview.

What was extraordinary (and impressive) about the making of this book is the each of the interviews were conducted in person which required the author(s) to travel for the specific purpose of talking with the subject. There are 19 magicians interviewed in this book, many of whom you have heard of or heard from (here on The Magic Word) plus you are introduced to many more who are not as well-known in the magic community. The interviews are edited for space that makes for easy reading. It is a great book to put on your nightstand and read one chapter each night as they are rather short in length but deep in thought.

Aside from the authors talking about the book for the duration of this podcast, we spend the first part getting an update from Jason Wehtington on Kostya Kimlat's "Restaurant Magic Business" program developed five years ago. Jason was intimately involved with the project and he talks about some of the challenges the program had at its inception and what is going on today.

You can watch a video of Jason performing at Disney World, see some photos, get links to more information on the book, enter the contest to win a copy of the book, listen to the podcast online and download the MP3 file at: https://www.themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/a-magician-prepares If you are interested in getting more information or buying the book, then please be sure to follow the Amazon Affiliate link on TheMagicWordPodcast.com website to help support the podcast.

This week we have a chat with Terry Herbert from England. Terry is well-known throughout the world as a respected children's entertainer having "written the book" (well, actually making the video) in the 1980's that defined what a kid show entertainer should do. But more than just entertaining children, Terry is also an accomplished comedy magician who has a lot to say about creating a character and just being entertaining.

He shares some great stories about some of the magic legends in the U.K. whom he has known and worked with and we also talk about close-up magic in the U.K. and how the venues differ from the U.S. I also found it interesting to know that he has done avid research on "The Piddingtons" who were a two-person mind reading act from the turn of last century.

You can watch a video clip of Terry on stage at the Magic Circle as well as a video of "The Piddingtons", see some photos of Terry, read the blog, listen to the podcast online and download the MP3 file at: https://www.themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/terry-herbert

4. What Makes A Good Kid's Magician? - #454 - Kyle Peron
--------------------------------------------
Message by Kyle Peron (US)

What makes a good kid's performer? What traits are there in a children's magician that make them fantastic or memorable? It is an interesting question to ponder and I guarantee you that each of us will come up with vastly different answers and have difference of opinions. Although many of us may differ, I would like to think there are some traits that a good kid show magician would always have.

With that said, let me try and dive a bit more in what I personally feel makes a good kid's show magician/performer.

First I think a good kid's magician is one who realizes that THEY are what is most important in the show. They understand that THEY should be the focus. The props are merely a means in which to create a magical experience. The props themselves should never outshine the magician or performer. You want folks to remember who YOU are and to walk away having had a great experience created by YOU. The props simply are a means in which to do this.

With this stated, I feel that a good kid's magician should be one who has developed a show in such a way that it engages the audience with lots of laughter, smiles and a good feeling. You want to entertain and not just wow. For kids, it is not so much about fooling them as it is using magic to create a fun experience for them.

A good performer will also realize that if they took every prop and piece of equipment out of their show, they STILL could entertain and could STILL create that wonderful feeling and experience for the children watching. It is important to realize that a good children's performer is one who knows children and who realizes what makes them laugh and smile. A good performer will be able to create this atmosphere and realize it is THEM that creates that.

I also feel a good children's performer is one who knows that ego should be left at home and that being a professional does not start when the curtains open and end when they close. Egos serve no purpose as a kid show performer. However, pride in your work DOES matter. There is a difference and a good children's magician will know the difference. Have pride in what you do and love what you perform.

Be a professional at all times and realize that a good children's performer is one who also knows that it is called "Show Business" for a reason. they understand that the business side of what they do is JUST as important to do well as the show itself. they learn both and learn to do both well.

One very important element that comprises a good children's performer is a simple fact that you must like kids. You must genuinely enjoy being around kids and like performing for them. if you do not like kids or feel weird performing for them, then walk away and change markets. There is no sense in trying to force yourself to perform for kids simply because you think you have to or someone told you it was "easy money." A good kid's magician loves children and really enjoys interacting with them on many levels.

A good children's performer is also one who pushes themselves to be original and unique. They develop their own style and their own character that fits who they are. they do NOT try and duplicate someone else nor do they become another magic clone. They work on routines that highlight their own character and own uniqueness. They strive to create acts and routines that fit and work for them. Most importantly, they understand what does NOT work and what will not play simply because it does not work for who they are.

A good children's performer is also one who realizes that they NEVER stop learning. They are always evaluating the show and changing it as times change. They constantly are learning and refining their shows and routines to make sure they always play the way they were meant to.

More importantly, a good children's magician is one who realizes there is power in sharing ideas and thoughts and tips with others. They realize that the magical arts is a much better place when information is shared or when they can mentor someone getting into the market for the first time.

They are also folks who really try to understand what makes children laugh and enjoy magic. They do not just assume they know. They go out and study it and always research it to find out what makes children enjoy magic and then apply those techniques to their routines and what they do.

In my opinion, all of these work together to make up a children's entertainer who truly can be defined as "great".

As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your thoughts. So if you have any thoughts on my articles or suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly at kylekellymagic@gmail.com. I would love to hear from you.

5. Calling all Australian Magicians
--------------------------------------------
Message from Nopera Whitley (NZ)

With less than 35 places remaining at the NZ Magic Convention, time is running out to secure your place at the biggest event for magicians on this side of the world. We're expecting this event to sell out at the end of July.

Now is the time that flights start going on sale, and there is a very limited number of rooms available at the convention hotel, The James Cook Grand Chancellor. As the James Cook is in the center of the city, there are plenty of other accommodation options to suit your budget.

Featuring Shin Lim, Hector Mancha, Rob Zabrecky, Charlie Frye and Colin Cloud, don't miss out on this opportunity to learn from some truly world leading magicians. It's going to be something special and something you'll remember for a lifetime.

He has performed and lectured in over 50 countries and appears frequently on television shows such as Good Morning America, The Today Show and Penn and Teller Fool Us where he recently did just that. He has authored thirteen books for magicians including a best-selling magic book, "MAGIC: the Complete Course", in 2009 (now in five languages and in its fourth US printing).
He edited the "Talk About Tricks "column in Magic Magazine for 12 years. In 2012 he consulted and developed a unique commercial spot for HBO, using sleight of hand to promote Game of Thrones and Boardwalk Empire. Also in 2012 he was named Magician of the Year by the Society of American Magicians.
Joshua is performance driven, from corporate functions to private parties to VIP backstage events. His track record of events includes the production of his, 2010 sell-out one man show "Unreal" that enjoyed runs in New York, Ohio, Florida and Las Vegas.
Many years have passed since Joshua's original sensational lecture tour of Australia and we don't know when he is coming back. Don't miss this opportunity to see one of the great magic lectures of our generation.
