2. Magicians In The Golden Age Of New Zealand Vaudeville
--------------------------------------------
Message by Bernard Reid (New Zealand)

Conveniently, vaudeville effectively started in New Zealand in 1900 with the founding of the Fuller empire, quickly followed in 1901 with the Dix circuit. I say conveniently as starting in 1900 dovetails neatly with my previous book "Conjurors, Cardsharps and Conmen" which finishes in 1899.

Vaudeville spanned fifty years of New Zealand's history and yet not a single book has been written about it. Although this tome covers magicians only it also chronicles the rise and decline of the most popular form of entertainment as it got battered by the encroachment of technology in the form of movies, radio and ultimately, television.

Many of the illusionists that toured in the 19th century travelled full-evening illusion shows. With the advent of vaudeville, magicians made up only part of the bill which meant there were many more of them but they were more specialised. In addition to vaudeville there were still full-evening illusion shows but they were not as frequent.

Chung Ling Soo, Le Roy, Talma and Bosco, Jean Hugard and many others toured New Zealand as part of vaudeville companies. "Magicians in the Golden Age of New Zealand Vaudeville" Part one. Chronicles the colourful and rich history of the magicians who entertained New Zealand audiences in the early part of the twentieth century. Their triumphs, accolades, trials and tribulations are all documented in detail.

3. Bob Patterson Is New IBM President
--------------------------------------------
Message by Dennis Schick, USA

Bob Patterson will take over as International President of the world's largest membership organization of magic in the world, the International Brotherhood of Magicians, at the I.B.M./S.A.M. Combined Convention July 12-15. That is why he is on the cover of the July issue of The Linking Ring, and why he is the subject of the five-page feature story inside. Assistant Editor Dennis Schick interviewed Bob, and recalled the concluding line by the late actor John Houseman in his television commercials for Smith-Barney brokerage firm in the 1980s: "They make money the old-fashioned way - they EARN it." Read how Bob earned it.

The July issue opens, as always, with Editor Sammy Smith's column. He talks about the excitement of opening a box of mail-order magic in his youth. And guess what? Sammy finally agreed to an interview about his ten years as editor of The Linking Ring. Get an insider's look at the past, present, and future of The Linking Ring.

Other feature stories in the July issue include: A report by Dr. Steven Schlanger called "Cafeteria Magic", about an incident when he performed real magic; a five-page news release about season four of "Masters of Illusion" on the CW Network on Fridays (including the complete roster of participating magicians); read how two I.B.M. members who live over ten thousand miles apart have become close friends; in an article entitled "Quiet Masters", Kenrick McDonald brings us the history and relevance of the black magical artist; and Tony Griffith brings us Part One of "The Magic Answer Game", about close-up magic.

Other Columns: Kent Cummins writes about "More tricks of the trade show", in his Marketing Magic column; in the Cutting Up Jackpots column, Bev Bergeron talks about "The magic of Broadway theater", in Magic Words Matter, Dr. Lynn Miner advises "Scripting: getting started", Scott Hood continues his The Therapy Of Magic with "Starting a therapy magic program", Skip Way devotes his Polishing The Rings column to "Introducing Comedy", and Dr. Lynn Miner gives advice on how to find lecturers, in his Ring Resources column.

Trick Section: Mike Powers turns his The Card Corner column over to Steven Youell, who explains "The Card Trick that has no explanation", the Numismagic column from Jean-Emmanuel Franz is, is by Chong Wong, and is called "Stand up shuttle pass", Andrew Woo continues his Simple Diversions from last month, with "The Heavy Guilder", In Situationally Yours, Chris Beason lets Josh Janousky describe "Rip-off" to us; and Michael Braggart brings us "Spot Change" in his Auto-Magic column.

This month's Parade is another -- his eighteenth -- One-Man Parade from prolific magic inventor Ian Adair, from England. This time he brings to us thirteen more of his original ideas. In Hocus In Focus, the I.B.M. reviewers give their expert opinions of nine new tricks, books, and DVDs which recently came on the market. And in the Broken Wand, we pay tribute to seven magicians who have died.

I.B.M. members receive The Linking Ring as part of their membership, including access to the issues electronically. For more information, go to www.magician.org.

Ever have that awkwardness when you get to an event and realize that trying to find the main contact is like trying to find a needle in a haystack? Have you ever felt weird by showing up at the event and the client simply does not know who you are? Even though you may be wearing clothes that simple screams magician, the client still does not put two and two together. They may have seen your website or photos numerous times but at that very moment they suddenly develop amnesia.

How can you overcome this awkward meet and greet moment and how can we set up practices so that you are perceived as a professional the moment you get at an event? You want to make that first greeting with a client a good one and also make a favorable first impression with them.

How can you do this and do it well? What can you say and do to ensure it goes over well? You do not want to waste any of your set up time and you do not want to take time away from the client's duties. You want to keep it short and sweet and professional. You want just enough for both parties to know who each other is and let them know you are there. You can then get the quick information you need to begin set up and have the client pleased that you have things under control.

Often times the client at the event may not even be there or they may be involved in other things. In this case, you need to ask ahead of time about who you should ask for upon arrival. In my talks with the client (as well as my agreements and contracts I send out) it always states what time I am arriving and who I should ask for upon arriving at the event. I cannot always assume it is going to be the client. It could very well be someone else. Asking ahead of time saves me a lot of time and frustrations.

I also ask for the contact and client's cell phones as part of my confirmation agreement with the client. This way I can touch base with the client as I approach the venue. By doing it this way, they know I am about to arrive and can prepare accordingly.

When I arrive at the event venue, there are certain rules I always try to abide by:

- I never will walk into a house or private residence even if the door is open and others are walking in. I will always knock or ring the doorbell. This is just a common courtesy.

- Do not assume that the person answering at an event is the client. In many times they may not be and may just be trying to assist you.

- If you are doing a family show, do not assume that the spouse will know who you are or that you are coming. In many cases it is one spouse who usually handles all the arrangements.

- When someone does approach me, I will always simply state who I am and that I am the entertainer and politely ask for the contact that I am supposed to touch base with.

- When meeting the client, a nice smile and a firm handshake can really say many things before any words are ever spoken. It is just a polite gesture to show you are a professional.

- After the handshake, I will simply state who I am and that I am their entertainer for the event and excited to be there. I will ask them to show me to the stage or performance area and make sure I have what I need. This is my moment to take a quick sweep to ensure I have everything from them. If I need something, I can take this moment to ask for it while I start to bring things in and set up. I like to do this now because once the client leaves, it is often hard to get them back to you. You also do not want to have to keep bothering them. This is my time to make sure I have what I need and then ask the client if they have any questions for me.

- If everything is good at this point, I can thank them again for having me and state everything looks great and that I will start to bring things in to set up. I will ask if bringing stuff in a certain way is still OK with them. This is always planned ahead of time, but I always like to ask again just to be sure. Once again it is about greeting them and making that first positive impression.

These are very simple concepts but ones that really can make a lasting impression if followed. People often forget that the first impression you make can really set the tone of the event going forward. I never consider my job starting when the curtains open. Part of being a professional is all the things many of us take for granted. Meeting and greeting your client appropriately is an important skill to learn to do well.

As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your thoughts. So, if you have any thoughts on my articles or suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly at kylekellymagic@gmail.com. I would love to hear from you.

7. MINDvention 2017
--------------------------------------------
Message by Danny Archer (US)

The 2017 edition of MINDvention mentalism convention will take place in Las Vegas from November 12th-14th. This is the fourteenth edition of this convention and it is aimed at anyone interested in the art of mentalism. This year, the producers are pulling out all the stops and have booked a fantastic line-up of talent including; Bruce Bernstein, Jeff McBride, Larry Hass, Eugene Burger, Ross Johnson, Richard Osterlind, Eric Samuels, Docc Hilford, Rick Maue, Chad Long and Michael Weber and Gregg Tobo.

The day after the convention ends, full day workshop is being offered by Bernstein and Hilford. Three full days of shows, lectures, panel discussions and more, all on the topic of mentalism. Chad Long is getting ready to release a new lecture of mentalism for Penguin magic and MINDvention will be the first ones to see it. Bruce Bernstein is the go to guy for many of the top workers when they want something new and fresh and his lecture and show are both must see events for any looking for commercial hard-hitting mentalism.

There are too many great acts to list each one separately, but any way you slice it, it still adds up to a great three days in one of the most exciting cities in America.

8. The Workshop Event Focus on Learning From The Pros!
--------------------------------------------
Message by David Sandy
Workshop, Executive Director

For a number of years, IBM Ring 129 has produced a unique event called The Workshop. It all started in 1996, and each year since then, it's gotten bigger and better. The "convention" took a few years off (from 2003-2015), but found a welcome revival last year in 2016.

The Workshop is one of the only conventions in the world that guarantees satisfaction! It's true! If you attend The Workshop and don't feel as though you got your money's worth, IBM Ring 129 will refund your registration fee! Seriously!

Now before you clamor to register for this amazing event, you should know what it's all about. The Workshop contains all the incredible, fun elements of a normal magic convention (close-up shows, cabaret shows, stage shows, lectures, etc.), but there are some elements that really set The Workshop apart from any other convention in the world.

The focus of The Workshop is on learning. You'll learn incredible magic effects, moves, staging, routines, direction, etc. in a hands-on environment. Because the Workshop is limited to only 200 participants each year, the event is intimate, and the learning/teaching is much more effective and fun. You'll actually have props in hand in small-group break-out sessions so you can learn from the masters of our industry.

This year's dates are November 8-11, 2017 and the event is held in St. Joseph, Missouri (just 25 minutes north of Kansas City Int'l Airport). IBM Ring 129 members will actually pick you up from the airport and escort you to the headquarters hotel to make it all easy and affordable for you. If you register prior to July 31, 2017, you'll get a $30 discount off the $299 registration fee, making your registration only $269. That includes tickets to all shows, break-out sessions, learning sessions, events, even the opening night dinner show complete with meal! The host hotel is the Radisson Hotel in St. Joseph, Missouri. Note: For workshop registrants only, you'll get a special $79/night rate.

Teachers announced for this year's workshop so far include Michael Ammar, Tim Hennig (one of the world's BEST children's' performers), Greg Gleason (illusionist from Las Vegas), Michael Close, R. Paul Wilson, Christopher Hart, Joshua Jay, Tom Burgoon, Christopher Carter (one of the busiest mentalists in the world), Chipper Lowell, and many more yet to come! The teaching is incredible and you'll learn more than you can imagine! You'll be inspired to take your magic to a whole new level!

For more information, check out the website at: http://ring129workshop.com/ Or "like" the Facebook page at: https://www.facebook.com/Ring129Workshop/

Once again, your satisfaction is 100% guaranteed! If you don't enjoy it, we'll refund your registration, no questions asked!

Hope to see you at this year's workshop!

9. RIP John Moehring
--------------------------------------------
Message by the Magic Compass
http://www.magic-compass.com/rip-john-moehring-texan-trixter/

John Moehring was a giant in the magic world. He was born in Houston, Texas on July 19, 1942 and he passed away July 9, 2017 after a long battle with Parkinson's Disease.

John Moehring was well known as "The Texan Twixter," a moniker bestowed on him in 1960 by Dai Vernon. John began his career when he was a teenage magician in Rockdale, Texas and rose to magical prominence with an award winning manipulative act featuring cards, canes and doves. He learned Cardini's method of producing playing cards from the fingertips from John Northern Hilliard's book Greater Magic and he mastered the skill through years of practice.

John didn't know any magicians when he was growing up so he was heavily influenced by the magicians he saw on the Ed Sullivan television show. At that time, The Ed Sullivan Show was the highest rated television variety show, broadcast live from New York each Sunday evening. This was when John set a goal to perform his act on that show. He also watched Cardini perform on the 1957 NBC special Festival of Magic and since there was no home video recording back then, he recorded the music from Cardini's act. When listening to that recording, he found that he could replay the Master's act in his head.

Moehring got to meet Cardini, Fred Kapps and may of his other magical heroes at the 1959 IBM-SAM Combined Convention in Chicago. The next year he would enter the Texas Association of Magicians Junior competition and took home a First Place Trophy. People that saw that show recall being impressed with the skill and the style the young magician demonstrated. He honed his act to perfection while in college at North Texas State University. He did this by performing eight shows a day, seven days a week at Six Flags Over Texas every summer. In 1964 the founder of the Six Flags franchise, Angus Wynne built the Texas State Pavilion at the World's Fair in New York and tapped John to perform his act. John took off a semester at NTSU to take advantage of this opportunity.

Mark Leddy, who was one of the biggest agents of the day, saw John perform at the World's Fair and told him that if he wanted to be booked on The Ed Sullivan Show, he would have to eliminate the doves from his act. After completing college, Moehring returned to New York and Leddy sent him on club and cruise dates to polish the act and wait for an opening on the Sullivan show. His call came in March 1966 while working a cruise, telling him he had been booked to appear on the Sullivan Show on April 24th of that year. At the dress rehearsal Sunday afternoon, Moehring was asked to cut his tightly polished six-minute act in half just a few hours before the live broadcast. Working with a stopwatch in his dressing room, he was able to trim the act to the needed time. You can see that performance here.

Thanks to his successful Sullivan appearance, Leddy was able to book Moehring at top nightclubs throughout Europe and back home in the States. Moehring eventually accepted a steady contract at the newly opened Astroworld, in Houston, and quickly moved up the theme park corporate ladder, producing shows throughout the US and abroad, rather than performing in them himself.

His resume includes Director of Live Shows for Astroworld, Houston, TX - 1968-70, Operations Manager for Carowinds, Charlotte, NC - 1970-73, Director of Development for Magic Harbor, Myrtle Beach, SC - 1974-75 and the Live Shows Production Consultant for Marriott's Great America, Gurnee, IL and Santa Clara, CA - 1976-80. From 1978 through 1990 John owned and operated Panorama Productions Inc., an audiovisual production company in Charlotte, NC. From 1990 through 1996 John was employed by Showtek Corporation, Arlington, Texas, where he scripted, produced and directed shows for theme parks and casinos in Atlantic City, NJ, Las Vegas, NV, and Seoul, Korea. One of the well-known shows he produced was the Wizard's Secret Magic show at the MGM Grand where he taught and mentored many young magicians upon their arrival in Las Vegas.

In 1991 Moehring helped put together an evening performance at the IBM convention in Baltimore featuring only acts that had appeared on the Ed Sullivan show. This allowed him to do the full six-minute act and was also the last time he performed it. After this last performance, John began contributing freelance articles to MAGIC Magazine and was eventually appointed Associate Editor in 1996. John would go on to serve as Editor of MAGIC from 2001 through 2005. From 2006 through 2008 John served as editor of M-U-M, a monthly magazine for the members of The Society of American Magicians. During John's three-year tenure as editor there was a marked growth in S.A.M. membership and circulation of the organization's magazine.

In addition to all of this, John also wrote A Texan Trixter in 1986, The Magical Life of Marshall Brodien; Creator of TV Magic Cards and Wizzo the Wizard in 2007 and in 2010 John wrote Del Ray; America's Foremost Magician for His Time.

John was the guest of Honor at the 2014 Dallas Super Session. The afternoon flew by as attendees at the invitational one-day convention took part in the traditional round-robin of close-up magic. (Everyone registered must perform a trick.) After dinner at a nearby barbecue joint, it was back to the hotel for the feature presentation, A screening of John's audiovisual scrapbook titled "It Was All About Tess". This presentation drew a prolonged standing ovation.

Message from Nopera Whitley (New Zealand)

With less than 35 places remaining at the NZ Magic Convention, time is running out to secure your place at the biggest event for magicians on this side of the world. We're expecting this event to sell out at the end of July.

Now is the time that flights start going on sale, and there is a very limited number of rooms available at the convention hotel, The James Cook Grand Chancellor. As the James Cook is in the center of the city, there are plenty of other accommodation options to suit your budget.

Featuring Shin Lim, Hector Mancha, Rob Zabrecky, Charlie Frye and Colin Cloud, don't miss out on this opportunity to learn from some truly world leading magicians. It's going to be something special and something you'll remember for a lifetime.
