4. England's Derren Brown On October Linking Ring's Cover
--------------------------------------------
Message by Dennis Schick, USA
Derren
Brown is one of Great Britain's star magicians, yet he has
been almost an unknown in the United States. But after two
sold-out months in a New York theater, he no longer is a
secret, and that's just one reason why he is on the cover
and is featured inside the October issue of The Linking
Ring, the I.B.M. monthly magazine.
Everything
about Harry Houdini continues to fascinate many people,
even nine decades after he died (in 1926). So, when his
old house at 278 West 113th in New York City came up for
sale, John Cox took advantage of an open house and toured
the property. He combined this in-person look with other
research he had done, and has produced a remarkable piece
about Houdini's old house, complete with floor plans and
lots of photos. What a valuable historical piece.
Dan
Stapleton began his "In Search of the Great Heaney"
in the May issue of The Linking Ring. In this issue he concludes
his story with "The Epilogue." Coverage of the
I.B.M.-S.A.M. Combined Convention in July continues with
twenty-three photos over five pages of the Order of Merlin
Breakfast. Robin Dawes brings us his in-person experience
at this year's FFFF convention. If you were not able to
attend Florida's first Close-up/Parlor Conference and Competition
-- called Magicpalooza -- in Orlando in May, you can read
a report about it from Luciano de Pazos.
Columns
in October include: Marketing Magic by Kent Cummins, "Think
Small;" Magic Words Matter, by Dr. Lynn Miner, "Scripting:
Initial Edits;" Cutting Up Jackpots, by Bev Bergeron,
"World's Greatest Authority Speaker;" Polishing
The Rings, by Skip Way, "The Rules of Magic;"
The Card Corner, by Mike Powers, who turns his column over
to Marty Kane, who brings us. "Car Jack-King;"
Numismagic, by Jean-Emmanuel Franzis, "Jean-Pierre
Vallarino's Four Coin Production;" Simple Diversions,
by Andrew Woo, "A Box of Four Easy Pieces;" Auto-Magic,
by Michael Breggar, "A Whole Empty Brain;" Ring
Resources, by Dr. Lynn Miner, "More on Magic Education."
The
Hocus Pocus Parade comes from National Capital Ring 50,
and was compiled by John Roberts. It includes fourteen effects.
The Hocus In Focus section brings reviews of nine new magic
effects, books and DVDs for your consideration before you
buy. The Broken Wand pays tribute to fifteen magicians who
have died. Ring Reports came in from sixty-three Rings.
High
on the list of popular features of each issue of The Linking
Ring are the advertisements -- the official "sponsors"
of each issue. As always, we urge all readers to support
these advertisers since they pay a large portion of the
cost of printing each issue.
Members
of the International Brotherhood of Magicians (I.B.M.) receive
The Linking Ring as part of their membership. For more information
and to apply for membership, go to www.magician.org

5. The Magic Word Podcast - David Garrard
--------------------------------------------
Message by Scott Wells, M.I.M.C. with Gold Star
David
Garrard is not a household name, but he is a "big fish"
in his pond. Moreover, he is adept at all kinds of magic
from close-up to stage and children's shows to mentalism.
He has appeared on "Penn and Teller Fool Us" TV
show and a frequent performer at the Kentucky State Fair.
He recently sat behind the microphone of The Magic Word
Podcast while passing through on his U.S. lecture tour.
He
"grew up" in magic over the past 40+ years with
other Louisville, Kentucky natives and good friends, Lance
Burton and Mac King. So, he has a good background and foundation
in commercial presentations. In this podcast, David shares
several ideas of how he markets himself, how he books his
shows, how he puts together his act, plus fun stories about
his many celebrity friends and more.
You
can see a video of his performance on "Penn and Teller
Fool Us", see some candid photos, read the blog, enter
the contest, listen to the podcast online and download the
MP3 file at: https://www.themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/388-david-garrard
Be
sure to enter the contest for a chance to win a hardback
copy of his lecture notes, "Out of My Hat", which
contains some incredible effects, some of which I have already
put into my repertoire. The book has a $100.00 value and
the contest is open to everyone to enter; however, if the
randomly selected winner resides outside the U.S., then
foreign shipping will be calculated. If the foreign winner
decides not to pay for the shipping, then another name will
be selected. All the details are on this week's blog. But
be sure to enter now before the contest is over.
We
also welcome Rajneesh Madhok as the newest member of the
Friends of The Magic Word. Welcome, Raj, and thank you for
contributing to help offset our many monthly expenses of
producing this podcast. I appreciate your confidence and
support.

6. Paul A. Lelekis - Performing "Unexpectedly"
--------------------------------------------
Message by Paul A. Lelekis (US)
Being
a magical performer is NOT an easy thing to do
it's
just NOT! A performer is in the lime-light and whether you
are a comedian or a magician, people expect you to "be
that character" whenever they see you out in a public
setting.
As
I write this, just last night (7/17/2017), I attended a
wedding and the expected happened. Someone brought a deck
of cards and asked me to "
do a trick Paul!"
This
means that they thought ahead of time to bring a deck because
they wanted me to perform.
In
addition
when you perform with someone else's deck
it
greatly strengthens the magic, in the lay persons' minds.
The
reason I placed "Unexpectedly" in parentheses
in the title above, is that I often have to expect to give
a "quick performance" because that's what people
LIKE in that type of situation
small doses of entertainment.
Even
though that person expected me to perform, I acted as though
her asking me to perform was totally unexpected!
Because
of this I usually carry a thumb-tip with a Mis-Made Bill
loaded in it and some half dollar coins in my pocket.
Sometimes
people will ask for a trick and not bring cards
so
now you're still ready to perform
apparently impromptu!
I
don't carry a deck of cards with me, because your performance
will appear contrived
not impromptu. But someone usually
seems to bring a deck of cards with them in hope that I
will do card tricks, which seems even more impromptu
it
is quite a compliment!
To
me, this passively implies that my card magic is effective!
People actually ask me to perform card tricks!
You
don't want to put yourself in a situation where people,
when they see you, will think, "Oh brother, I hope
he doesn't pull those cards out again!" This is not
good!
If
someone does ask me to do a trick and then hands me a deck,
I act as though I was a little "caught off-guard"
by his or her "unexpected" request.
Even
though you appear as though you did not expect to perform,
you must always be prepared to perform! That's the life
of a magician!
If
you say, "Well I can't do a trick
I didn't bring
anything." Then people will look at you as though you
are a pretty lame magician! The lay crowd expects you to
always be ready to perform!
"Oh!
You want to see a trick? Alright let me start off with some
money." (even though someone thought about bringing
a deck of cards!)
The
reason for me "switching gears" (starting a money
trick instead of a card trick) is so that I am in charge.
I
don't act "bossy", I just appear to have my own
agenda (which I do!) and people will become more relaxed
and less likely to become "over-involved". People
actually like this because I have taken control!
You
must realize that in these types of performing situations,
you are being asked to perform by people who know you. They
feel more comfortable around you than when performing for
strangers.
Because
of their familiarity of you, people will become grabbier,
talkative, willing to make comments about what they think
about how the trick works, etc.
This
familiarity can reduce your overall effect on the spectators'
perspective about "how the trick works". Remember
there
are usually other people watching, who are NOT that familiar
with you, and they are the ones who you want to impress.
I'll
then pat my pockets down as I ask "Uhhh
does anyone
have a one-dollar bill?"
Make
this request appear as though you are trying to 'think quickly
on your feet' and come up with something - apparently impromptu
- even though someone has handed you a deck of cards!
You
need to be prepared for people who will say "Well I
have a twenty-dollar bill." It actually happens most
of the time!
I'll
then say "Oh - thank you!" I'll then take the
bill and just put it in my pocket
and again ask for
a 'one-dollar bill'.
This
always gets laughs and it puts the performer in control
of his spectators. I ignore the twenty-dollar bill for the
time being
it puts people in a hyper state
their
mind is racing, thinking that maybe they won't get the $20
bill back!
Sometimes
someone will ask me "Why do you need have a one-dollar
bill?" I'll then say "Ma'am, you may not like
me now
but you really won't like me if I use your $20
bill!" This makes them smile and they don't ask any
other questions!
After
I finally receive a one-dollar bill, then I'll return the
$20 bill.
I'll
start by performing my "Four Quarters" routine
with the Mis-Made Bill and then start doing card tricks.
Later I might even do coin tricks.
Don't
start performing trick after trick after trick in an effort
to let "everyone knows how great and wonderful you
are", because you will soon become "the guy"
who everybody avoids. Less is more!
I
also only perform a few effects because I typically don't
work for free
but also, like I just said, less is more!
Though
I am primarily known for being a card magician, I perform
a large variety of magic in actual performances.
I
try not to perform too many "Pick a card, any card..."
types of tricks over and over, again. You will lose your
audiences' enthusiasm.
I'm
not one who really likes performing for friends and family
I
have been a professional entertainer for decades and I feel
much more comfortable performing for "strangers"
in restaurants, community shows, festivals, corporate shows,
the "dreaded" children's birthday parties, etc.,
than I do for people I know personally.
Card
Magic can be a "touchy" subject! If you whip out
the cards every time you see someone, people will inevitably
ask, "Do you perform any other kind of magic?",
or
they will "run for cover"!
You
do not want this!
I
know you've heard this before, time and time again, but
don't perform for people unless they ask you to perform
you'll
find out over the long run, that people will ask you to
perform almost every time they see you if you have good
magic!
When
other people "see" that you've been asked to perform,
this will create a sort of party atmosphere and everyone
will gather around!
People
will remember you
if you're funny, good at what you
do, engaging, making them feel as though they are a part
of the fun, and if you are not a show-off!
"Take
your spectators on a magical adventure"
it will
long be remembered!
Also,
always remember
make the magic about them
not
you!

7. The Gift Of Giving - #464 - Kyle Peron
--------------------------------------------
Message by Kyle Peron (US)
magic4u02@aol.com
Kylekellymagic@gmail.com
KPmagicproducts.com
What ever happened to childhood innocence? Whatever happened
to ability to see magic in a child's eyes? Somewhere between
childhood and becoming an adult, we lose a very special
gift. We lose the ability to see magic and experience magic
in the way it was meant to be experienced. We lose the gift
of simply allowing ourselves to be entertained and to simply
enjoy the wonderment of it all.
As
we break out of childhood, somewhere something happens to
us. We get brainwashed into thinking magic is "for
children only". We get this false idea that a magician
is there to fool me and embarrass me if I go up and help
him or her. We start to put up defenses and view magic as
something that is supposed to be figured out like a puzzle
that needs to be solved. It becomes anything but entertainment.
Entertainment is lost in many layman's eyes.
It is a shame that so many lay people view magic in this
fashion. It often feels like an uphill climb every time
we do a show or have to try and convince a client that what
we do has value. It is almost as if these folks forgot what
it is like to be a kid. They forget what it is like to have
that feeling of opening a gift they really wanted on Christmas
morning.
Recently
I experienced an audience that completely made me see magic
in a different light. This audience made me realize that
the innocence is not lost. They made me realize that magic
is very much alive in the way they view it.
My
wife and I had the pleasure of performing for Challenger
Little League. This is a group of folks who have formed
an organization so that children who are mentally challenged
or autistic could play and enjoy the game of baseball. These
kids ranged in age from 5 to 21 years of age and every one
of them gets involved and helps support each other. There
is no hatred or fear. There is only love and support and
friendship.
As
I began to perform I started witnessing something VERY special.
Something I had thought was lost forever. Something I thought
I would never really see or get a chance to witness. Although
these kids were mentally challenged and autistic, they had
a special gift. Even though many could not talk well or
express themselves like you or I, they had a power that
many of us only wish we had or could get back.
As
I performed I realized that these kids were seeing and watching
and viewing magic the way magic was meant to be experienced.
They simply have never lost the wonderment of magic. They
had not lost the gift of laughter or the fun of simply being
entertained. There was no "figuring it out". There
was no "you can't fool me". There was simply smiles
and laughter from allowing themselves to just be have fun
with what they were seeing.
I
was really taken back by this. It was an amazing experience
to know that somewhere in this world, magic can be viewed
as it should be. It also made me realize that we as performers
have a rare gift. Instead of always wanting to receive something,
we can give a gift of a smile. We can share the gift of
joy or make someone forget about a problem even if just
for a few moments.
If
these autistic children can enjoy magic on the level they
do, then we can learn from this. We can strive to push our
art form in a positive direction. We can work towards making
what we perform a part of who we are. We can make sure we
are never satisfied with doing the same old thing. We can
strive to change perceptions through our actions. We can
give the gift back that so many have lost.
As
always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your
thoughts. So, if you have any thoughts on my articles or
suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly
at kylekellymagic@gmail.com. I would love to hear from you.
