2. 2018 I.B.M. Annual Convention
--------------------------------------------
Message by Terry Richison
I.B.M. Convention Chairman

We just wanted to let you know how you can be one of the first to find out who is performing at the 2018 I.B.M. Annual Convention. We are having a rollout of our performers starting November 30th. All you have to do is go to the I.B.M. performer page web site https://www.magician.org/convention/performers and click on the picture in front of the stage curtains.

We will be announcing a new performer each day at 10:30 am CST until we have announced all of them. In looking at the lineup, that might take a while. We know you are going to be surprised and pleased with the performers that we have booked for the convention.

If you want to register for the convention, all you have to do is go to https://www.magician.org/convention/

You can register online or print off a copy of the registration form and send it in. Please note that we have lowered the pricing this year in celebration of the I.B.M.'s 95th Anniversary. But we can't keep the price this low for long. Prices will go up at the end of January 2018.

So register early and get better seating in the theatre!!

If you have any questions, fell free to call the office at 636-724-2400. Enjoy the performer reveals.

5. The Magic Word Podcast - Andre Kole And Company
--------------------------------------------
Message by Scott Wells, M.I.M.C. with Gold Star

During my visit to Phoenix, Arizona this past month, I stopped by the home of internationally acclaimed illusionist, Andre Kole, for a chat and a late lunch with him and his lovely wife, Kathy. He told me that his son, Tim Kole, would be coming to town later that evening along with his friend, Lex McKinney. They were going to start the long process of categorizing all of Andre's illusions from his many warehouses in preparation for their sale. The next day, I followed Andre to one of those warehouses where I caught up with the three of them plus Craig Greenwood, who was a longtime assistant and general maintenance man on Andre's show.

In this week's podcast, we interrupt the progress the team was making on inventorying their many props and chat about Andre's many world tours, the disposition of his illusions, cruise chips, college shows, stories from the road, and more.

You can watch a video of Andre Kole, see some photos I took that day in the warehouse, read the blog, hear some product reviews, listen to the podcast online and download the MP3 file at: https://www.themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/395-andre-kole-and-company

Ever wonder why you have to work so hard sometimes to get folks to see you differently and to appreciate what you do? Ever see a person with their hands crossed over with this look of "fool me magic guy." on their face? It's as you have to prove something to them before you have even done anything. You never met this person yet they give off this defiant attitude. Why is it that we have to constantly work towards changing perceptions?

Part of the reason may be the sheer fact that most lay people view us magicians as being all the same. As sad as that may be, that is the case. Ask most people to be honest and describe a magician and you may get something like this: "oh a guy who dresses like a clown, looks weird, embarrasses people for laughs and pulls quarters out of people's ears. They are great for kid's birthday parties. Oh yeah, my uncle does magic."

You may be laughing right now, but that is basically how lay people perceive us. They feel we are all one and the same. Now why do they have this perception? Well because in reality, there are a LOT of bad magicians out there who are 1) doing magic when they are not ready to do it and 2) those not willing to ever learn or to ever listen instead of stroking their own egos. Give anyone a deck of cards and teach them a card trick and the next week they are doing paid gigs. It is really a joke, but that is how things are.

So how do we change this and why does this happen in the magical arts? Well a lot of it stems from magicians simply kissing each other's butts so much instead of being dead honest with each other. This may be harsh, but I have seen it time and again.

How many times have you seen a really bad show or a bad act yet you saw magicians going up to them saying, "Oh wow that was great. Nice job. Way to go."? Why do we do this!? Do we do it to be kind or because they are friends or because we are trying to show respect?

If you ask me, this is all a total joke. No wonder a person never learns or educates themselves if all they ever hear is people patting them on the back for doing a lousy job. If you are a friend and if you respect a fellow magician, then it should be a golden rule to be honest. Wow now there is a concept many fear. What is so wrong with honesty and why can't magicians be honest with each other?

I am not saying you shred a person or scream at them about how bad they were. That is now my point. My point is a simple one. Be honest to yourself. Be honest to the fellow performer and be honest to the ART! If you see something that can be improved, then simply be honest with them and offer them constructive feedback that can help them.

You can do this by showing respect to the performer but also not having to lie to them every chance you get. If the performer wants to elevate the art, they need to be able to take help when it is given to them. If you address the feedback in an honorable and friendly fashion, there is no reason why the performer can't listen to your suggestions. It makes them better and elevates the art.

Now if you are on the receiving end, for god sake stop thinking everyone is out there to attack you. Stop putting up the fists every time someone offers you a suggestion. If you want to be a professional, you must first act like one. Stop talking for once and listen instead. Maybe what the person has to offer can be a tip that would take you years to learn on your own. Not everything everyone tells you is a piece of junk.

If we are to elevate our art to a higher level, then we have GOT to start helping each other and listening to each other. We are a brotherhood and there is no reason at all why more of us can't offer assistance so we all grow and learn. So, stop giving IN to lying to people just to make them feel good and start giving OUT feedback and help and friendly advice that can help someone else through your knowledge.

We are magicians and we have this amazing ability to make people laugh and smile. I am not sure about you, but I would love for people to feel the passion for magic the way I feel the passion and to respect our art the way I do myself. We do this first by helping each other.

As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your thoughts. So, if you have any thoughts on my articles or suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly at KyleKellyMagic@gmail.com. I would love to hear from you.

7. A Profile Of Dai Vernon For Canadian Television
--------------------------------------------
Message by David Ben (Canada)

Nearly twenty years ago, I was able to collaborate with my friend, filmmaker Daniel Zuckerbrot, on a profile of Dai Vernon for Canadian television. At the time, I believed that Vernon was the most influential magician of the twentieth century. I have since reconsidered and now think that he is the most influential magician of all time. This project became an important stone along the path to Dai Vernon: A Biography, published in 2007.
In addition to the insight provided by performers who knew Vernon, including Max Maven, Herb Zarrow, John Carney, Jackie Flosso, Ricky Jay, Steve Freeman and Persi Diaconis, it was an important opportunity for Vernon's children, Edward and Derek Verner, to share their own thoughts and feelings about their father, the magician. It also featured black-and-white silent footage of a younger Vernon demonstrating sleight-of-hand which we had converted and professionally retouched for the film.

While the film was very well received, it was only available briefly for purchase as a VHS cassette, which was subsequently pirated. The film pops up regularly online, always low-quality copies of copies shared without any credit to those who made the project possible.

Now is our chance to fix that. We have provided Historica Canada with a clean copy, transferred from the broadcast master. It is now available to view on-line for free as part of their Canadian Biography series. A copy can also be viewed through the Screening Room at Magicana.
