The New England Magic Collectors Association Founders Award

The New England Magic Collectors Association's Board of Governors is proud to announce the 2017 Founders Award has been presented to the American Museum of Magic of Marshall, Michigan.

The New England Magic Collectors Association's Board of Governors is proud to announce the 2017 Founders Award has been presented to the American Museum of Magic of Marshall, Michigan.

The Founders Award, an honor newly created this past year and to be presented biannually, was established in memory of Ray Goulet and Ed Hill, two of the Association's founders and most dedicated and enthusiastic collectors. The award publicly recognizes an individual or an institution for long-standing and exemplary accomplishments in the disciplines of magic collecting and magic history that significantly reflect the mission and ideals of the New England Magic Collectors Association.

For 40 years, from April 1, 1978, the date Robert and Elaine Lund opened their beloved American Museum of Magic, the museum has been the home of the largest publicly displayed, private collection of conjuring artifacts, posters, books and memorabilia in the world.

For four decades, the American Museum of Magic has collected and preserved rare and valuable treasures from magic's storied past, becoming an irreplaceable research center for collectors and historians, as well as a renowned public attraction celebrating the lives of magicians and their contributions to the art of magic.

For more details on the 2017 Founders Award and the American Museum of Magic, visit http://nemca.com/wp/2017-founders-award/

The American Museum of Magic is located at 107 East Michigan Avenue, Marshall, MI 49068. The museum is open to the public from April through December. Researchers should contact the museum for appointments. For more information, please visit the museum's website at www.americanmuseumofmagic.org, or email info@americanmuseumofmagic.org. The museum telephone is (269) 781-7570.

The New England Magic Collectors Association was formed in 1980 when Ray Goulet, Ed Hill and other like-minded area collectors gathered periodically to participate in what would be friendly exchanges of information about magic history and collectibles. Today, because the organization has grown considerably during its 38-year existence, members hail not only from New England, but from throughout the United States and Europe.

Since its inception, NEMCA's mission continues to be the promotion of interest in the collecting of memorabilia relating to magic and the sharing of knowledge and expertise in the collection and preservation of magic apparatus and literature.

For further information regarding the New England Magic Collectors Association and for the upcoming Yankee Gathering XVII, November 15-17, 2018, please visit www.nemca.com, or contact Ray Ricard, 555 Newport Avenue, Pawtucket, RI 02861. Telephone: (401) 954-6237.

I thought I would take some time to write about an interesting topic that came about after tuning into a podcast this past week. They were talking about creativity in magic and what we can do to be creative and to think that way.

However, it also got me thinking about it from a different perspective. What really hinders us from being creative? What is it about ourselves or the world around us that inhibits us from trying to be more creative in the magic that we do and the magic that we share with our audiences?

One word came screaming to the top the more I started thinking about it this week. That word is simply "Fear". It is funny how a simple four-letter word can be one element that hinders us so much that it stops us dead in our tracks and prevents magic from reaching higher levels of creativity. It is amazing how such a simple concept of fear can really be so damaging to the magic that we do.

But why is this? What is it about fear that affects us so greatly? For starters, I think the initial fear stems from the idea of wanting to be and feel safe. Let me explain if I may. As a magician the easiest thing I can do is to copy or mimic another performance I have seen or to use a routine that I have seen done before me. We know this is true and that this happens because we all have seen it or some may even admit that we do it ourselves.

But why do we do this? Why do we take the easy way out when we could be creative and create routines that are as unique as the individual performing the magic? I think the answer is that of safety. Perhaps utilizing a routine, we have seen done before, or a routine we "borrowed" from someone else, allows us to feel safer on that stage. We feel that if the act or routines bombs then it is not us that is the problem but the routine itself. It becomes less personal to us and we often can handle that type of failure easier. It is not us who failed but the routine we used.

In this manner the blame is never placed on the performer. It is simply displaced onto the routine we used. Sure, this is a safe way out. It allows one to deal with failure in a way that perhaps is easier to get through. However, does this really make us better magicians and better creative thinkers? I say, "no it does not."

It is the easy way out. It is the safe bet in a gambler's hand. But it does not make us better thinkers of magic. It does not make us better performers. It does not allow us to start thinking for ourselves by learning to create magic that takes out audiences on journeys they have not experienced before.

To be a better magician and a creative thinker of magic one must first get over this fear of fear itself. We must be willing to venture away from what we know is safe. But how does one do this with the magic that we do? Well I think it starts with the understanding of the word "fear" itself.

So many folks have the notion that fear is a bad thing. It must be looked upon and viewed in a negative way. We must not allow ourselves to have failures because it makes us less of a person. To many, fear is defined as an unpleasant feeling of perceived risk or danger, real or not. But in that definition lays the answer we seek. Fear may not nor does it have to be real. Nor does it have to be seen as a negative thing at all. Fear does not have to mean failure.

To many of us when we fail on stage or in or magical performance we fear trying anything new. It hinders us from advancing our art. We become stagnant because fear of failing prevents us from trying something again. If we were creative and if we tried and failed, why would we want to try it again?

So how do we allow ourselves to be creative and not let the fear of creativity stop us? Well that lies in changing the way we view failure in the first place. I now view failure in a totally different way that I personally feel has helped change my magic by leaps and bounds. I would like to share my quote with you.

"Failure is only failure if you fail to learn. If you learn even one thing from any failure, then isn't that failure really a stepping stone on the path of success?"

Think about that for a minute. How powerful can our magic become if we viewed failing in this way? How creative could we be if we simply allowed ourselves to view failure as a mere stepping stone on the path of learning? I would like to think amazing things could happen to the art of magic we love so much.

So, take these words and think them over and apply them directly to your magic. Do not fear creativity. Do not fear the notion of trying something new with your magic. Everyone is bound to fail the first couple times out, but then again some of the best things in life came out of people willing to take the that risk. Are you willing? I hope so.

As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your thoughts. So, if you have any thoughts on my articles or suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly at KyleKellyMagic@Gmail.com. I would love to hear from you.

7. Inject Yourself With Your Performing Personality
--------------------------------------------
Message by Jay Fortune (UK)

To best experience this exercise, you can choose to plonk yourself in a dank corner, ideally on a used mattress with suspect stains, and then apply a tourniquet around your bicep to find a nice juicy vein ready to inject. Or, you can simply do the following with pen, paper and a closed-eye meditation chucked in for feel-good measure.

Imagine you were taking the various components that make up who you currently are and not who you've been trying to be as a performing magician, and have blended them up over a heated spoon ready to put into your needle. What has gone in there? A small sprinkling of comedic skill, maybe a larger chunk of script writing ability (if so, please send me some in the post in an unmarked package), an ounce of rehearsal discipline, and a large dollop of talent. And then consider what you'd put in your perfect Magic Personality Needle. How would this differ from how you currently see yourself?

Most of us, probably all of us, assume we are better than we actually are. We see a performer who is not very good at connecting with his audience, and we smile, knowing we are far better than that. But in truth are we?

By considering exactly what our current performing personality consists of, we can then see which parts are natural strengths that should be played to (e.g. No need to top them up in our needle) and those which we may want to leave out on reflection (e.g. Those cringe making, audience disappearing, transforms-magic-into-trivial-nonsense-that-intelligent-adults-assume-is-for-kids-only one-liners) and those elements which we can see in there as part of our Performing Personality mix, but needs a higher dosage.

If you could inject yourself with the perfect recipe of personality unique to you, which features would you accentuate? Which would you leave out?

Consider that drug needle.
This is really important stuff! Most of us won't ever get chance to get enough work to develop our performing personalities, night after night, and those that do get the initial break from having given lots of rehearsal and thought to their style, rhythm, pace and look.

The vast majority of performers I saw in my time as a booking agent for variety acts, were chancing it, mostly going on a whim, many with stolen and/or stock lines.

Once you've decided, after considerable contemplation, on your perfect drug recipe, take that needle with you. Whenever you feel anxious about an upcoming show, inject yourself. (This is of course all imaginary. I would strongly urge you not to actually inject prior to a high profile gig.) See how, by creating a vision of your best performing qualities, this exercise gives you the energy to accentuate those features. Even in rehearsal stage this can greatly boost your performing personality, allowing you to focus on those strongest parts of what makes you unique.

Performing is a drug. We get a high on stage, and take time to come down after the rush of a show. Treat your rehearsal the same; inject.

Later this year, I'm releasing a book for performers based on my many years dying on stages as a professional magician and working with variety acts as an agent, manager and producer.
