2. Jbrizy Named And Shamed
--------------------------------------------
Message by Quiel Em

If you ever seen any video of Jbrizy it will definitely make you cringe but this one is over the top.

It's not acceptable to do this kind of stuff for the sake of views and likes. Clearly, no respect for the creators and magicians in the community.

In this video, they are trying to make a parody of two Chinese magicians doing the same style of revelation in social media.

And get this both of these guys performed on "Fool us" before this, creating some magic to sell.

This is the new breed of masked magician…….

Quick update by... Sean Heydon Magician

Great news it seems the video in question, exposing effects such as 'pen through bank note' and 'twisting iPhone' has now been removed.

But more importantly I think this sends a good strong message to newcomers to the magic community that we need to put thought into our social media videos and how they might impact our small community.

We are responsible for the future of Magic and how the public perceives it. Those who have enjoyed long careers such as Daniels, Brown, Copperfield seem to have all respected this and I'm sure this trend will continue.

Thank you all for getting behind this.

Sean

3. Linking Ring features Las Vegas Magician

Message by Dennis Schick (US)

The featured cover article in the February issue of The Linking Ring is about "Mike Hammer, A Striking Success," written by Simone Marron. Hammer uses sarcasm as his main presentation approach, but it endures him to his audiences, much like Don Rickles. Read about his journey to his own show in Las Vegas.

Editor Sammy Smith devotes his column to the thrill of collecting, and I.B.M. president Bob Patterson talks about his travel itinerary representing the I.B.M., as well as encourages members to enter the annual convention contests, and urges younger members to look for mentors, as well as to attend the Lance Burton Teen Seminar at the I.B.M. convention.

Other feature articles in the February issue are: a preview of the theater in Grand Rapids, Michigan, where shows will be held during the I.B.M. Convention in July; a review of the "Celebration of Eugene Burger at the Magic Castle," "Frankel's in Houston Closes After Seven Decades;" "A Magical Evening: The 2017 Milbourne Christopher Awards Presentation;" and a review of the Fellowship of Christian Magicians Convention.

Ring Events came from Ring 55 (Phoenix, Arizona), Ring 115 (Singapore), Ring 116 (Ontario, Canada), and Ring 252 (Murfreesboro, Tennessee). The Hocus Pocus Parade comes from John S. Roberts, who brings us eleven of his effects. This is his third Parade.

Columns include Marketing Magic by Kent Cummins ("Picture this: Photography for Magicians"); Experiments In Magic Theatre, by John Tudor ("The Temple of Kall"); Connecting With Kids by Carlos Adriano ("Magic and Spectacle"), Cutting Up Jackpots by Bev Bergeron ("School Shows of Old"), Polishing The Rings by Skip Way ("Youth Protection"), and The Therapy Of Magic by Scott Hood ("How to implement a magic and humor cart at a hospital or nursing home," by Bruce Baum), and ("Bent over card" by Dan Amos).

More Columns Are: Magic Words Matter by Dr. Lynn Miner ("Building script editing resources"); The Card Corner by Mike Powers ("Push through collectors"); Simple Diversions by Andrew Woo ("Just knifing around"); Auto-Magic by Michael Breggar ("One for the books -- The spy's book test"); and Ring Resources by Dr. Lynn Miner ("Generating revenue").

Hocus In Focus this month includes reviews of ten new books, tricks, and DVDs. The Broken Wand pays tribute to thirteen men and women who have died. There are 62 Ring Reports this month, highlights from recent Ring meetings.

The Linking Ring is a benefit of membership in the world's largest magic organization, the International Brotherhood of Magicians. For more information about the I.B.M. and The Linking Ring, go to: www.magician.org.

5. The Magic Word Podcast - Richard Turner Q&A On DEALT
--------------------------------------------
Message by Scott Wells, M.I.M.C. with Gold Star (USA)

During this past month I had the unique opportunity to view a screening of "DEALT" documenting the life story of international card mechanic, Richard Turner. There is no one else like him and as Dai Vernon says, "there probably will never be another." Following the screening, we conducted a Skype video call with Richard on the big screen as I hosted a Q&A between him and the audience.

In this week's podcast, you can hear the audio of our session and enjoy hearing some "behind-the-scenes" commentary on the filming of the documentary plus a little about Richard's practice time, travel schedule, and more. After our chat on the podcast, we also review three new magic products available from Murphy's Magic Supplies plus offer you a chance to win a promotional deck of DEALT playing cards.

You can view a trailer of the film, see some photos, read the blog, listen to the podcast online, enter the contest, and download the MP3 file at: https://www.themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/408-richard-turner-dealt

If you enjoy The Magic Word Podcast and are financially able to support us, then please consider making a one-time donation or a monthly pledge to our efforts. For the cost of a cup of coffee a month, you can significantly help the podcast and help defray our monthly production costs. Please visit: https://www.themagicwordpodcast.com/fotmw/ to find out how you can help and also earn some pretty cool perks, too! Thank you for listening.

6. Festivals - Show Content - #476 - By Kyle Peron
--------------------------------------------
Message by Kyle Peron (US)
magic4u02@aol.com
http://www.facebook.com/perondesign
http://www.kpmagicproducts.com

So, what do you have as the content of your show? What is it that your show should contain to be able to perform for festivals and have them work effectively?

First, we should talk about the typical length of a festival show and what festivals tend to gravitate more towards. I do a 30-minute show and realized early on that this is really the ideal length for any festival performance. The reason for this is two-fold:

1) The festival is all about people moving around from one place to another. There is so much to see and do, that anything longer than 30 minutes starts to become a nuisance and you tend to lose the crowd. The festival also must appeal to the venders who are paying for spots to be
there to sell their wares. Because of this, festivals want to keep folks moving around on a consistent basis.

2) 30 minutes is also an ideal time for a performance. It gives people a moment to rest, and eat something from the food vendors. Your performance gives them a reason to stay put for a little while.

You also want to keep your routines visual as well as keep them shorter and more compact. A visual routine will draw those in that may be walking by your performance area. They will see the visual nature of the show and tend to be curious. Curiosity really does make people want to stay and watch and once they do, you usually can hook them into staying longer.

If you do the shorter style routines, these people that stopped to watch you half way through a routine, have a reason to stay as they will not feel they are lost or left out. They will only have to wait maybe a minute before they get included into a new routine and there for feel
more a part of your overall performance.

When working festivals make sure you cater to a family audience and not just the kids. By tailoring the show in this fashion, you will keep more people watching you for a longer period of time. Festivals are geared towards getting families to spend the day out together. By having a show that appeals to the entire family, gives you more value to the festival.

Certainly, you can have a festival show that is for the kids only. You may choose to do this because it fits your style and who you are. You may also choose to create one as another offering. However, if you decide to go this route, make sure you approach the festival by asking for their children's entertainment chairperson. Many festivals will have a children's area and you can work towards getting booked for that area.

However, I try an entertain every single person in that audience in some way. That is what is important to me. This is why I make sure our shows cater to all age levels from 3 to 103. You make your routines vary to allow for this.

Many of you will realize that a lot of what you already perform will carry over perfectly for a festival show. Therefore, many of you have a great base show already from which you can learn to adapt and tweak to make it work ideal for the festival situation.

Another thing you will want to do is keep your routines angle proof. In festival shows, your audience is never really controlled as much as you may want it to be. People will stand and sit all over the place. Try and do routines and acts that are not dependent on angles and it will serve you much better.

Have a good combination of a visual opener with comedy and of course audience interaction. This combination makes for a show that flows well and gets people involved. The key is reaction and interaction. I want to engage the audience as much as I can. My client wants to hear an audience having a great time.

If you have illusions, then feel free to do them as they do add a lot of value to a festival show and they can increase your income as well. However, do not feel that you MUST do illusions to be able to work festivals. Even if you are a strolling performer only, you can provide a
strolling entertainment package that works for you and for the festival you are seeking to perform for.

As you work on your festival show, keep in mind you are working outside. You must take weather into consideration with what you do and account for heat, wind and other situations that come up.

***

I hope this information has given you an idea of what can be done with working the festival market. If you would like additional and detailed information on this topic, please see my book/eBook at: http://kpmagicproducts.com/Festival_Magic.html

As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your thoughts. So, if you have any thoughts on my articles or suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly at magic4u02@aol.com.

I would love to hear from you.

Achieving The Impossible

MediaPost

I admit it: I went to see "The Greatest Showman," a movie musical loosely based on the life of P.T. Barnum. Early reviews had been, well, let's just say meh. But in the weeks since its release, both the movie and its soundtrack are turning into hits, with box office $138 million, and the album, now going gold. The Oscar-nominated "This Is Me," sung by Keala Settle as the bearded lady, is in the Billboard Hot 100.

So, what about this movie is connecting with audiences and turning it into a sleeper hit?

For one, it turns out that for company founders and startup entrepreneurs, the allure of magic, circus and performance has some surprising connections.

My first job was as a magician. Not card tricks and such; my show had five doves, a rabbit, and a somewhat daunting illusion that cut a person in half. BlackStar productions, as it was known traveled, and toured, and played every Elks club and public library that would have me.

My patter was in many ways not that different from pitching a room of venture capitalists. And it was the start of something that grew over time. I spent weeks at the Celebration Barn Theater in South Paris, Maine, and then launched a summer touring company, The I Don't Believe It Players (T.I.D.B.I.P.) that, if I say so myself, dazzled Maine summer camps with magic, juggling, and puppetry.

I had a summer at the legendary Tannen's Magic Camp, and a charter membership to the Society of American Magician's. A Salon For Engagement Magic evolved into improvisational theatre, where I spent much of my high school career touring with the Young People's Theatre, an improv group in Brunswick, Maine.

For me, performance was a form of expression and a community. If you've seen "The Greatest Showman," you're starting to see the theme here.

If you've ever been to a magic show and thought "that's impossible" - well, that's what entrepreneurs set out to do: to make the impossible possible.

When you start talking magic within the startup community, young magicians come out of the woodwork.

My friend Tony Hsieh is an amazing leader of Zappos. But, abracadabra, his first job wasn't in shoes. Hsieh says he started a mail-order magic trick business in high school. And what did he learn? He says he priced a trick featuring a disappearing coin too high at $10. Total orders received: one. But that lesson served him well.

Another friend, Jay Alan Samit, author of "Disrupt You!" and multiple startup company CEO - among them SocialVibe and ooVoo - was making a living as a magician 28 years ago, long before he began his journey of writing books and running companies.

Cesar Kuriyama, the driving force behind the video software app 1 Second Everyday, says he grew up spending his afternoons at the magic shop learning tricks. Spend just five minutes with his app, and you'll know you're experiencing magic.

And those are just the people I know. I found quotes from other entrepreneurs about their experiences with magic. Aaron Levie, the co-founder of Box, said he worked as a professional magician in middle and high school. Daniel Lubetzky, The CEO of KIND Snacks, said he still treasures his time performing as a teenage magician in Paris. Evernote founder Phil Libin described himself as a magic geek. And the CEO of tech incubator 1871 Howard Tullman said he's been a magician since he was nine years old.

Which brings me back to P.T. Barnum, and the movie "The Greatest Showman." Sitting in the darkened theatre watching the story of Barnum and his troupe of talented, passionate misfits, I found myself thinking about the message of difference, and the extraordinary power of accepting, even embracing, people for who they are.

The movie is a hit because it's entertaining. But it's more than that. It is having powerful resonance in this moment of division, name-calling and browbeating in this country. We are united in our uniqueness, in our difference.

I'm a kid who started out wanted to emulate Harry Houdini, who found tremendous joy entertaining his audience with a sense of wonder and amazement. As an entrepreneur who built five companies, each time I faced a cavalcade of skepticism and a steady stream of rejections.

But entrepreneurs see past the obstacles, and ahead to the magical future, they strive to conjure out of thin air.

"Here's to the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The troublemakers. The round pegs in the square holes. The ones who see things differently. They're not fond of rules. And they have no respect for the status quo. You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them. About the only thing you can't do is ignore them. Because they change things. They push the human race forward. And while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius. Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do." - Apple Computer, 1997.
