4. The Magic Word Podcast With Raj Madhok
--------------------------------------------
Message by Scott Wells, M.I.M.C. with Gold Star

Rajeesh "Raj" Madhok does not consider himself to be a professional performer, though his contributions to those professionals in the magic and mentalism community have been relevant. Raj is a dermatologist in Minneapolis, Minnesota but his passion is magic with a focus on mentalism. He has contributed numerous effects to various publications over the years including Lee Earle's former "Syzygy" magazine, and Banachek's "Psychological Subtleties 3", among others plus he has lectured for the Psychic Entertainers Association (P.E.A.) and I.B.M. national convention. He has also authored a couple of books, one of which is being offered as a prize in this week's podcast.

This week we catch Raj at the recent F.F.F.F. convention where he shared his thoughts on mentalism plus a look at the recent Academy of Magical Arts awards banquet from his perspective. You can read the blog, see some photos, enter the contest, listen to the podcast online, and download the MP3 file at: https://www.themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/425-raj-madhok

Be sure to visit the website to enter for a chance to win one of two copies of his eBook, "Mysteriouser and Mysteriouser", a 54-page book of close-up mentalism consisting of mostly impromptu mentalism effects. Also, you can subscribe to our new weekly newsletter for The Magic Word Podcast. Sign up and give it a try. It's free and what have you got to lose? 5. All Four One - John Carey #3
--------------------------------------------
Message by John Carey (UK)
https://carey-scene.com/jc-main

The title of this four Ace production stems from the fact that you will be producing all four Aces using one core technique. Have the Aces evenly distributed in the deck and you are good to go.

Ask a spectator if she is quite observant? Roll with her answer and have some fun, then suggest a little game of observation with her. Hold the deck face-up and with the faces slightly raised towards you start spreading the cards until you see the first Ace. We will now essentially do a partial Hofzinser cull, covering the Ace slightly with the card below it (ie, to the immediate right / above it in the face up spread). To do this the pad of the left thumb simply pulls across the indifferent card to the right of the Ace just enough to cover it. The right hand comes away with a spread of cards and calls out the cover card that is at the rear of the spread. Flip this packet face-down and table it.

Repeat the above spread and partial cull sequence twice more, secretly dragging an indifferent card over the Ace below it just enough to cover it and then come away with a small spread and call out the exposed rear 'cover' card each time before flipping each packet face-down and tabling, forming a row of three packets.

Finally spread through your remaining cards and execute a full Hofzinser cull of the remaining Ace, allowing it to ride secretly beneath the spread. Call out the random rear card of the spread and then flip the packet face-down and table it.

To conclude, state you have a terrible memory and ask your helper to name the cards she saw. Have fun with this and state that those four cards would 'never get the money'. Make a magical gesture over the tabled packets and then reveal an Ace on top of each packet, to conclude the multiple transformation.

I am very fortunate I get to perform most shows with my wife. This week I had to do a solo show and it got me thinking a lot regarding load in, set up, show performance, break down and load out. A lot of it I took for granted because we are a team and I do not do many solo performances.

The more I thought about it, the more I started to come up with a concept I have known for years but never really put down on paper. I had always thought of it but never to this level.

I feel it is very important to our marketing and to our business model and I am sure it would be for yours as well.

I call it T.A.G. (TAG). TAG stands for Time At Gig. I started to realize I needed to know what my TAG time was and break down my TAG time. Learn from it and study it and determine in what ways I can make it benefit me.

First, TAG time can be broken down to include the following. Each associated with a time element to it:

- load in at the show
- set up of the show once items are at performance "staging area"
- performance of the show
- any after show add ons you may do
- break down of the show
- load out and pack up
In essence it is the total time spent from the moment you arrive at the event till you pull away to head home or to another gig.

Each of these (listed above) has a time associated with it. Each of these TAG times may also differ according to what market I may be working. A birthday party show may have a TAG time less than say a corporate illusion show.

For me this revelation of defining it in this fashion really made sense to me. I now have TAG times for every market I do and every show.

Now why is this important? Well for most of us, we would love and have done multiple show days. If you do not know your TAG time, then you spend an awkward moment trying to calculate when you can get to another gig. You end up spending too much time figuring it out and that makes for human error. It also causes possible problems with a prospect because you are not on top of your game.

If I know my Birthday Party TAG time is 2 hour (example), then I know I can easily use that to determine exactly when I am available to do the next event. This makes doing double or triple book days much easier.

I want to always find a balance. This means keeping my TAG time reasonable without losing any quality to the show I present and perform. If I can lower my TAG time while maintaining a quality show, then this becomes a winning formula for me.

I then can perform more events in a day and earn more income in the process. I do not have to spend a lot of time figuring out when I can do the next event, because I would already know.

This can also allow you to locate areas where you can make improvements. If you realize your TAG time is too long, then you can dissect it using the list above. Find which area is taking the most time and then figure a way to cut that time down.

This could simply mean a better way of packing up your equipment, so you make less trips to and from the car.

The TAG principle really does work and I encourage each of you to give it a try. Write it down and go through it for each of your markets and shows. Have it written down and learn from it? I know you will not only find ways in which to improve it, but it can also benefit your business greatly.

If you do give TAG a try, I would love to hear from you.

I hope this information has given you an idea of what can be done with working the Festival market. If you would like additional and detailed information on this topic, please see my book/eBook at:

Magic at The Tivoli
Starring Silly Billy, Paul Richards, Levent, Joel Howlett, Jeannie, Sean Taylor and Brendan Montanner's Magic to the Max!

Few of us are old enough to remember the wonderful Tivoli circuit in Australia which played host to the greatest magicians of their era. People like Houdini, Chung Ling Soo, Carter, Dante and The Maskelynes. (Sydney actually had 2 Tivoli theatres - one prior to 1928 in Castlereagh St and one after that in Hay Street). How apt then that the largest showroom at the Rooty Hill RSL is named "Tivoli" after this golden age of variety. We need your help to fill this huge showroom.

Ticket sales are going REALLY well, but with less than 2 weeks to go, we still have tickets available so please give the show one last push with your friends and family. Encourage them to log on to the website at the RSL to buy their seats directly. Share it on Facebook and be sure to tell them how much fun it will be.

Something special to eat?
Maybe you are catching up with old friends? Or arriving in Sydney a night or 2 early? Or looking for something really special before the gala show on Saturday night? Let us recommend the sensational Menu 33. This is not your burger and bistro joint, oh no. Fine wines, ala carte menu and a superb, ambient surrounding.

Bookings recommended!
