2. Teller's Injury Forces Penn & Teller To Go Dark Earlier
--------------------------------------------
Article by John Katsilometes Las Vegas Review-Journal

Spinal-fusion surgery and a comedy-magic production are an unhappy mix.

Consequently, Penn & Teller have shut down their production show effective immediately. The duo will not be back onstage until August 18. They called off their show at Beau Rivage Resort & Casino in Biloxi, Mississippi, on Friday night and have pulled their shows at the Rio off the schedule, too.

The duo already had planned to take a hiatus so Teller could undergo spinal-fusion surgery, the lingering result of hanging from straitjackets and climbing in and out of boxes for more than 40 years. The original dark period was to start July 10, but Teller's back had other ideas after P&T's performance Wednesday at Beau Rivage.

Though in pain, Teller was able to finish the performance. But then skipped the post-show meet-and-greet for the first time in 43 years and began making calls to alter the duo's upcoming schedule.

Teller's surgery is now scheduled for Monday in Las Vegas. He posted a note to fans and ticket-holders on his Twitter page Thursday:

"My sincere apologies to our fans in Biloxi and folks who were planning on seeing the Vegas show. Last night during the show my back firmly ordered me to cut the crap and get it fixed. So I'm stopping work from today till August 18th and getting my back surgery pronto. Love - T."

In a separate post, the 70-year-old illusionist added, "In our entire prior career, I think we've had to cancel only four shows on short notice. So I (and much of our crew) feel disoriented and befuddled - as if we're in one of those showbiz nightmares where you can't find your way back to the stage in time for the next cue."

Jillette also posted, "Teller is getting his back totally fixed a little sooner than expected. So P&T are on hiatus from everything until August 18th and then the boys will be back and bad!"

The CW magic-competition series "Penn & Teller Fool Us" resumed at 8 p.m. last Monday. Those shows were recorded in the spring at Penn & Teller Theater. There are no shows scheduled in the venue during P&T's break; "Wow - World of Wonder" continues to run in its own theater on the Rio casino floor.

Larry Jennings' coin cut effect from his book Larry Jennings on card and coin handling is a beautiful piece of magic where the effect is crystal clear. Here is a bold but strong approach I'm having a lot of fun with. It's a bluff, but fun!

Have a card selected and signed. Upon return control it to the bottom of the deck. I use the Hofzinser cull for this. Execute a slip shuffle retaining it on the bottom and table the deck face-down near you.

Borrow a largish coin and execute two or 3 vanishes and productions - a brief flurry. Apparently place the coin into your left hand, really classic palming it in the right hand. Bring the left fist over the deck and slowly open it to reveal the coin has vanished.

Now for Jennings load: the right hand comes over the deck from above and cuts off about half and slaps them down to the left of the remainder. As you do this the palmed coin is loaded on top of the bottom half. Bring the right hand away to reveal the reappearance of the coin.

After a short pause the right hand returns to the coin packet and picks it up, thumb on top of the coin, fingers underneath the packet. Ask for the name of the selection? Make a brisk right to left tossing action as you toss the packet into your left hand. Friction will cause the bottom card of the packet (selection) and the coin to stay together. This is an application of the old Hofzinser toss discovery. Done briskly the eye simply cannot tell the card came from the bottom. Drop the left-hand cards on top of the tabled stock and focus on the card with the coin on top. A moment later turn the card over to reveal a successful conclusion.

Have you ever had anyone ask you if magic was real? Was it a child… and adult? What was your reply and how do you answer that question that comes up from time to time? Interesting thought if you really think about it and one I would like to talk about here in this article.

Certainly what we do as magicians is to fool the senses if you will. We are there to make the impossible seem possible. We stretch the imagination of what can't be real and make is plausible to the audiences who are watching. In that regards than magic is not real at all but something we are trying to do as entertainment to the folks who are watching our show. We create an illusion of reality.

However I can also say that when anyone asks me if magic can be real, I always respond with a YES and a big smile on my face. For those who want more information, I always like to share with them why I feel this way and for me, the exact moment when the magic became real to me. Let me try and explain through a situation that actually happened to me last year. I hope it may inspire your own family and kid show magic as it has me.

I have to share this story with all of you because it was something that was so touching and so moving that happened to me this past year when performing my family style show at a county fair. It touched me so much that I hope it might to you as well and show you that magic can be so real to people and touch them in ways you may never have realized before.

Let me give you some background a bit here. My wife and I got called back and were booked for 3 days at a county fair performing 2 shows daily and some strolling magic as well. We always enjoy performing there but this year they had only one main stage and had everyone performing on it.

We certainly had our share of problems that weekend to a point where I was really starting to doubt myself, my abilities and why I was having so much bad luck. To begin with it rained almost the entire 3 days of the event. Even though the stage was covered and there was a tent for the audience, it just meant packing in the rain, loading in the rain and walking around in mud.

It made for people who were cold and miserable and who really could care less about interacting with some magic guy on stage. Even though my wife and I tried so hard to get the shows going, I just felt lost as I felt the shows went over OK but I just did not touch the crowd, the kids or connect with them as I usually do. Normally this would not bother me, but I really strive at doing the best shows possible and connecting with my audiences, the kids and making the show as much fun as I can.

Well here is what happened on the last day that absolutely just changed my whole outlook on magic and it happened at a time when I really needed it to. I was feeling so bad the prior night and miserable on the drive home. I felt my performance was a waste the other day and that I just did not have any answers. Why could I not connect with the audience? Why could I not get the reactions I am used to? Is it me? Am I losing my touch? Do I have to give up performing what I love to do? All of these thoughts raced through my head as I struggled that night to make sense of it all.

Well the one stage guy who was running the stage and MCing noticed I wear hearing aids and asked me about them. I always am up to talking to anyone about my disability and how I have learned to overcome it. He suggested as an idea to include my disability and talking about it as a part of my show. He was surprised to realize that I already do that in some shows.

However, I stopped doing the routine about my disability because I guess I felt that I wasn't sure folks were ready to hear it or if it was appropriate or not. I wasn't sure how it would play or go over. He suggested I try it and I am so glad I took his advice and did it in both shows on the last day of the fair. It felt amazing to be up there telling the story and doing the magic that goes along with it.

Well it gets to that spot in the show where I am going to tell this heart-felt story about a young 8-year-old kid who realized at an early age that he could not hear like other kids. How this kid was tormented and picked on and how he felt sorry for himself. I tell a true story how a magician at an event much like at the fair changed that kid's life forever and the reason why I share the story with them is that that young 8 yrs. old boy was ME. I tell them that I still wear hearing aids to this day and I stand before then as proof that it is not always easy to do things they find hard. I remind them that I am witness to the fact that anything can be done if you are willing to give it your best shot and work hard. I then go into showing them the first real routine I ever learned taught to me by that magician. My version of the linking rings.

Well I can never tell the story without choking up and I did choke up that day with tears in my eyes as I began my ring routine not knowing how in the world this would ever play or go over. I thought I needed to tell it.

Well the show was over and I felt wonderful. I went down to greet the audience and a couple waited until I was done with the kids and other folks. The man came up to me and said that he could not thank me enough for what I said up there on that stage that day. He said that his son also was born with a hearing loss and they as parents knew what I went through because their son did as well. I told them that I was once told that I would never be able to perform magic for audiences because of my hearing loss or that it would be so hard for me to do so why even bother. I told them that I am here today on this stage as living proof that I will never ever let any disability stop me from doing what I love to do.

When the father heard this from me, he could not keep it in anymore and standing right there in that tent he broke down crying as he shook my hand. This was soon followed by the wife as they both said thank you so much for caring and for sharing my magic with them. They thanked me for making their day and for bringing magic into their lives in a way no one else has ever done.

Man I cannot begin to tell you how wonderful that made me feel. The ability to touch someone and some family in the way I did that day was a magic far greater than anything I have ever experienced before in my life. What that man said to me and what he expressed was true and real magic that I cannot even begin to explain.

It simply was one of the most magical experiences I have ever had as a family entertainer and I am very blessed I was able to make such a difference.

Is magic real? Can it be real? Can it affect someone so much in a way you never thought possible? Well I do not know about you, but my experience that day told me that the answer is a big and HUGE YES YOU CAN!

Each one of us has a gift of performing magic. We have the ability to make a person smile, to laugh or to forget about their troubles for a little while. Whenever you put a smile on a person's face.. well to me that is as real as it gets.

As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your thoughts. So if you have any thoughts on my articles or suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly at KyleKellyMagic@gmail.com. I would love to hear from you.

6. Simon Drake Long Awaited Lecture Released

Message by Simon Drake (UK)

Due to public demand and after several different sources combined and digitally enhanced to create the ultimate representation of this one-off event Simon Drake's long-awaited lecture DVD has been released as a limited edition. Simon explains in depth many of the effects he has created for stage and screen and unusually for a magic lecture it explores the thinking behind the stagecraft of his four decades as a performer.

It also covers the TV series Simon created, The Secret Cabaret, which has now achieved, well deserved cult status and proved to be way ahead of its time. Many prominent magicians including the vastly knowledgeable Patrick Page cite it as the best TV magic ever made. This lecture is described as 'a must-see, not just for Simon's fans but any serious student of magic and illusion'.

Published in MagicWeek

1950 was the start of it all - Norman Hunter described a trick with wooden blocks in the 'Meccano Magazine' Xmas issue. I made it up from cardboard and performed it at the school Xmas party. I eventually met Norman on the 18th June 1989 and was able to lay the blame squarely on his doorstep!

The first magician who introduced me to a magic club (The Sussex Magic Circle) was a wee Scot named Bill Fargie "The vest pocket magician" in 1954. I used to visit him every Saturday for lessons. I met him in the 'Carlos Magic Studio' in North Street Brighton, which was run by another member of 'The Sussex Magic Circle' - Carl Franklin. I was still at school at the time and used to travel from my home in Burgess Hill to Hove every day to attend the Hove Grammar School. The train reached Brighton at about 8.20am every morning and I then had to board another train at 8.40am to go to Aldrington Halt - the nearest station to the school.

This gave me 15 minutes to sprint from Brighton station to the magic shop, collect my 'Abra' and sprint back to the station for the connection! Every other Thursday I went to 'The Sussex Magic Circle' at the Glenside Hotel in Brighton, and it was here in the student section that Janet Clare, Cynthia Neptune, Peter Steadman, Bob Freeman, David Clake, Nic Lewin and myself practised our hobby. Just listen to that list of names - all but one is now full time professional magicians! We must have had good teachers!

Silken Bombshell plus Lewis Ganson's 'Bags of Everything' won me a talent competition at the first ever Burgess Hill 'Goose Fayre' in 1956. The judges were Jimmy Edwards, Ted Kavanagh, and the local Beauty Queen. Jimmy Edwards spent most of the time backstage downing pints of best bitter!

I also joined the 'Bognor Regis Magic Circle' after meeting Len Jennings. My mother's sister lived in Felpham and so we were quite often in the Bognor area. It was here that I had my first experiences of appearing in a full-size theatre. Every year the Bognor club put on a show at the 'Esplanade Theatre' and I just could not wait until the next one! The greatest thrill was Easter 1961 when we put on a show for the whole week.

The first trick I invented, manufactured and marketed was Twin-set. I keep thinking that it has come to the end of its life and then suddenly it starts selling again.

We formed Sound Ideas in 1990 - I was trying to think of a name that could be used for sound systems and magic. My good friend, Hank Moorehouse, keeps telling me that I should be 'Peter Scarlett Magic' because they know me in America and not Sound Ideas. He's probably right! I have now changed the name to Peter Scarlett Magic.

I was forced to become a dealer/performer in 1993 when the company I was working for was taken over and all the sales staff were made redundant. I had already been dealing since 1990 so it was really a natural progression. Being a magic dealer brings some very amusing moments - I had a customer in Wales who rang me for quite a list of items and wanted to know whether I could put it on his Auntie's credit card! When I explained that I did not take credit cards he asked if I had a local petrol station that would book, £150.00 of petrol on to the credit card and then supply me with petrol until the, £150.00 was used up! It takes all sorts!

The magicians that I saw early on and who influenced me were Slydini, Al Koran, and Marvyn Roy, but the one who gave me the opening of my act was Ken Brooke. I saw him demonstrate the vanishing cards and case, and the diminishing card routine, that I open my act with to this day, in around 1958 at a Harry Stanley day at the Victoria Halls.

One of my favourite tricks to perform is the Nemo Rising Cards, not only is the effect sensational and 100% visual, but it is a challenge to perform!
