3. Finessed Hofzinser Force - John Carey #12

Message by John Carey (UK)

The classical Hofzinser cull force is a thing of beauty. Fred Robinson started the ball rolling with his ultimate force. The following is a piece of finesse I've enjoyed using that adds a nice layer of deception.

The force card starts out fifth from the top of the deck. Holding the deck in left hand dealer's grip, riffle down the outer left corner of the deck with the thumb and ask a spectator to say stop. When they do lift off the packet at the point stopped at with the right hand, cards held from above in overhand grip. Use the pad of the right second finger to push the top card of the lower packet forward about two inches and assemble the deck, with a card protruding.

Start a hand-to-hand spread and cull the fifth card (force card) under the spread, Hofzinser style. Continue spreading until you get to the outjogged card. Take all the cards up to and including the jogged card away slightly in the right hand and tap the left long edge of this packet against the back of the left hand cards, squaring them.

Momentarily place the right hand packet side jogged on top of the left hand cards, held in place by the left thumb. Bring the right hand over the upper packet from above, push the jogged card square and lift up the packet and expose the face card to your helper. This must be carried out smoothly. The card has been forced and you then proceed from there.

I posted recently on Facebook asking a simple question. What is one of the best qualities or traits you feel makes for a good magician and why? It was an interesting discussion that brought about a lot of great answers and opinions. However, one item kept coming up by many people. It is a single word called "personality". It was so great seeing so many folks give value to personality over other things.

I really think personality is so underrated in magic today. People just simply forget the power it has in everything we do. A trick is just a trick. The people want to like you. If you take the same trick and place it in the hands of someone who has and conveys personality and then someone who does not, it looks like a totally different effect to a lay audience. It really is that stunning to see happen.

Tricks alone do not really mean anything by themselves. A trick will not happen or work without the magician. Place a deck of cards on a table and they are not going to start doing an ACR routine by themselves. If they do, then start to run real quick. It is YOU that makes the difference and it is YOU that makes the magic happen. If this is the case, then focus should be on you and not the prop or trick you are presenting.

But what is it about you? It is your personality that really makes the audience enjoy the experience and enjoy you in the process.

I honestly feel that people want to be entertained way more than they want to be fooled. People want to walk away having had fun with the experience of what they just saw happen. Take some of the best acts out there today. Take a look at the ones that you really love to watch perform. It is safe to say that you enjoy them because 95% of their act is not solely based on the magic alone. There is more to what they provide isn't there? The good entertainers are that way because a majority of their act is interacting with the audience in a comical entertaining way, engaging, dialogue, connecting, talking. etc. It is the essence of their personality that makes you enjoy what they do.

It is interaction and expressing personality. It is taking the audience on a journey and getting them laughing and having fun instead of just seeking the WOW only.

I think that is key. If you could take away the trick in any performance, and safely say the routine is still entertaining, then I think you have something. Take away the props and the trick and then look at what that performer does. I can safely say the entertainers that "get it" are the ones who without any of these props, can still entertain and audience and have them enjoying every minute of it. This is the essence and importance of personality in magic.

There is a quote that was shared to be by my good friend Dan Birch. Dan said the quote goes like this. "If they walk away saying remember the trick that the magician did, then I have failed. But if they say remember the magician who did that trick, then I have succeeded." I was so glad Dan shared this with me because it got me thinking that it is your personality that makes them remember you.

I think that is a key to developing a likeable character. Some magicians try to focus so much on the trick only that they are void of any personality at all. I want the audience remembering me not my deck of cards.

No one is saying not to have the tricks. What we are saying is that the focus of any performance should not be on the trick itself. The trick is just a prop. The focus should be on personality and using that personality to truly take the effect to an entertaining level. It is giving the audience more to enjoy. You add personality into what you do and I guarantee your audiences will thank you for it.

As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your thoughts. So, if you have any thoughts on my articles or suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly at KyleKellyMagic@Gmail.com. I would love to hear from you.

9. Review the Real Deal by Dennis Loomis
--------------------------------------------
Reviewed by Quentin Reynolds

Dennis Loomis was one of magic's general practitioners. Like with Alan Shaxon, Karrell Fox, Billy McComb, and Johnny Thompson, if they phoned and asked, "Can you do X, Y or Z?" the answer was, "Yes!" Then they figured out how to do it.

And Dennis did it. He toured the US and Canada for three years with a full evening illusion show. He did an escape act as well as escaping from straitjackets while hanging upside down from cranes and helicopters. He did birthday parties. He did a balloon show (as well as pitching them).

For five years he toured doing school assembly shows - three a day for five days of the week. He did close-up and became very proficient in mem-deck work. He made improvements to every trick he ever performed. To top it all he performed an SM themed act that caused consternation at magic conventions.

This book is the story of his magical life, his routines, and the characters he met. It's basically about the stuff working pros talk about when they get together.

We have Michael Close to thank for this collection. Dennis Loomis had put off writing a book, and when Michael became editor of M-U-M, the magazine of The Society of American Magicians, he talked Dennis into writing it a chapter at a time. It's regarded as one of the best series of articles ever to appear in any magic magazine.

There are tricks a plenty, all with the Loomis touch. What particularly appealed to me was his work on the Full Light Spirit Seance, Billy McComb's Jumbo Jest (McCombical Prediction), and the Double Penetration of a silk through cane with no readjustment of the silk.

For me, it is not so much the tricks, but the tips and advice learnt through years on the road and thousands of performances before paying audiences. Things like how to get away at the end of a show when the school principal or show sponsor wants to make a speech for which you would be expected to remain and hear. Like how to finish a balloon gig gracefully when there's still lots wanting balloons. There's dozens of such tips.

Loomis was great friends with Doug Henning and the book finishes with reminiscences of Henning. Both were early purchasers of the Harbin book and each built what would be some of the first Zig Zag illusions in the United States. Each made improvements and these are detailed. It's only fair to point out that Jack Hughes in England, independently made most the same and other improvements.

The book is published in both eBook and ePub formats. I recommend it highly to any magician doing a stand-up or stage act/show, or any magician interested in what really goes on in the life of a working professional.
