We had a fabulous Brotherhood of Magicians Club meeting this week. Members thoroughly enjoyed the hour-long performance by professional Australian magicians who are on tour in New Zealand, my long-time friend from Melbourne Sam Angelico and the lovely Rosanna Macca. Sam Angelico is FISM winner awarded World Champion of Comedy Magic in 1985.

We were also treated with a demonstration by young YouTube sensation Eduard Todor showing us his skills with a deck of cards.

Houdini Girl short experimental DOC to screen, at Coney Island film festival - Sept 14-16, 2018

Amazing news! Magician / Filmmaker, Adam Steinfeld's short Doc, Houdini Girl" starring Dayle Krall, "the most accomplished female escape artist in the history of the world" was selected by the 18th annual Coney Island Film Festival, Sept 14 - 16, 2018.

In this experimental doc short film, Dayle escapes from impossible Houdini death-defying illusions, mixed with a juxtaposition of the real 1920s Houdini himself, using rare recently discovered historical silent films, set to the perfect soundtrack from "Rabbit & Rogue" by award-winning composer, Danny (Batman) Elfman.

No one - man or woman has ever attempted to escape from Houdini's notorious upside down "Chinese Water Torture Cell" - until now... .master escape artist, Dayle Krall who hails from Canada, is the first person in the history of the world to attempt this escape since Houdini's untimely death, on Halloween in 1926.

Dayle's escapes are stunning and amazing!

Watch her, as she proves once and for all, "failure means a drowning death."

Long Shuttered Magic Island is Coming Back to Life in Houston (No, Really)

Mysterious, Iconic Club Begins Reconstruction With Firm Reopening Plans

By Annie Gallay

Magic Island is reopening this November after 10 long years.

It's a magic trick as old as time - the disappearing act. Iconic dinner theater Magic Island pulled the classic move 10 years ago. After fire and water damage from Hurricane Ike, it retreated into the dark. Only its giant pharaoh's head, cresting the building like a beacon and visible from the Houston freeway, was a sign of what it had been before.

Now it's time for the dramatic reappearance. Magic Island is on the brink of rebirth, set to open its doors this November after a distant decade.

In its heyday in the 1980s, Magic Island was a private club known for its sumptuous ancient Egyptian decor and opulent, intimate theaters. In this case, what happened in Vegas didn't stay in Vegas - the magic came to Space City.

And it was all manner of magic, from the sly sleight of hand-style to the mind melding you'd only see on stage, from the abracadabra to the abstract. The main theater sat 150, with two smaller rooms sitting about 20 to 30 people each. Now, it's all returning.

"It's not only the experience of a stage show. You can see the close-up miracles that happen before your eyes and under your nose," magician and Magic Island entertainment director Scott Wells tells PaperCity. "Illusionists have more emphasis on comedy. It's bubblegum for the eyes, pleasing and fun and funny. Cotton candy for the eyes.

"There are mind-readers and mentalists. That's more esoteric, something you think about a lot more. Mind reading is real meat for the brain. Someone who can make predictions. It'll fry your brain. You think, 'How did you get inside my brain? How did you?"

Wells vows to bring all sorts of acts back. "That may or may not mean lions and tigers," he quips, Oh my.

Way back when, Wells watched big panthers prowl the stage. In the past week, he's been flooded by calls from former Magic Island magicians eager to bring their skills back to the stage. More than 100 acts are rearing to bend the rules of reality in front of a Houston audience.

In the old days, members of the elite Magic Island club would insert a card into the mouth of a carved cobra to gain entrance. Its slitted eyes would light up, and the doors to another world would open.

Within two years it became a public club. Inside, it was all mystery. Cut off from the outside with no windows, and no revelation of the magicians' secrets. It drew crowds for private parties and magic shows you couldn't find anywhere else in the city.

Owner Dr. Mohammad Athari, who also owns United Neurology next door, had toyed with opening Magic Island again and again over the years. His efforts would start, sputter and stop.

But this time is different. Wells can feel it. "I felt excitement. Reserved excitement, because there had been other false starts and stops, it seems like every once in a while," Wells says. Now, it's no more crying wolf. It's a call to arms.

"We're moving forward each week. When I go down there, I see more and more things being done," Wells says.

Magic Island's large theater holds up to 150 people, while the smaller ones seat 20 to 30 people on risers.

Wells and his wife were the very last act all those years ago, performing a two-person mind-reading bit. He remembers the call Friday afternoon about the hurricane.

Maybe he could read minds, but he couldn't see into the future. He had no idea Magic Island would be shuttered for so long.

Sue Smith, who works with Athari at both Magic Island and United Neurology, couldn't believe it when the doctor came to her this time, promising to re-open Magic Island at last.

"I'm awe-struck. This has to be a massive remodel," Smith says. "We're trying to bring back that kind of old-school elegance. What's been challenging is keeping everything that was there but updating it and bringing it into the times of today."

Smith is confident this time around, just like Wells. There have been inspiring omens.

"We were able to get our original phone number. That's crazy. That's one of the first things we did. I thought, 'Oh my God, that's a sign,' Smith says. There's no longer any question this is Athari's calling.

Construction has kicked off, stirring up sawdust and old memories. Magic Island is being excavated like the tomb it resembles, but it's clear it's been ransacked. It takes a fair bit of suspension of disbelief to imagine it could be restored to its former glory. Hieroglyphics are marred by graffiti; irreplaceable items have been stolen.

Among them, a rare poster that David Copperfield once offered to buy for $25,000. The tell-tale, four-foot brass cobra that acted as the gateway. But the bones are still there, the design crafted by an engineer for Indiana Jones.

You can still find the bar from Irma la Douce, the romantic comedy starring Shirley MacLaine and Jack Lemmon. But the scene-stealer is the chandelier from Gone with The Wind.

The artifacts aren't limited to Magic Island proper. As of right now, there's Old Testament overflow in the nooks and crannies and closets of United Neurology. There are boxes of the signature black-and-gold print matchboxes, the occasional sphinx sitting on a shelf and a full-size sarcophagus tucked in a corner behind stacked chairs.

Smith's favorite is a jade-green seated sculpture of the Egyptian goddess Bast, one hand clutching an ankh and her cat's face neatly carved. People were always touching her at Magic Island, leaving her knuckles worn white.

"I tell people it's a fertility statue. I love telling them that. They freak out," Smith laughs.

The goddess will find her way back to the dimly lit rooms of Magic Island. Bast will find herself surrounded by fresh coats of paint, murals meticulously restored stroke by stroke.

An extensive remodel is underway, opening up the space, turning the "disco room" into a lounge, and a terrace running the length of the building is in the cards. "I just imagine sitting out there, watching the fireworks on New Year's Eve in the Galleria area," Smith says.

The revamped event space downstairs will have room for private parties of up to 300 people. Both floors will feature kitchens, with the kitchen downstairs left open.

"Right now, we're focusing on upstairs. We've had a flurry of interested people wanting to make a reservation," Smith says.

The large stage shows run around 45 minutes long, and there isn't a set schedule for each night.

"Part of the mystery and surprise of Magic Island is how time disappears. You go in at 7 and before you know it, it's midnight," Wells says.

Shows go on as long as there are people to watch them. "People keep coming back to experience the magic. It's that feeling of childlike mystery and wonder," Wells says. And that goes for those who have seen it time and time again.

"I love the magic. In all the years I've been there, I've never asked how they do it. A few things you see over and over again - I was always amazed," Smith says.

Audience interaction is almost guaranteed in every show, particularly in the sleight of hand. "Within a 40-minute show, we'll have six people come up at different times. I'm confident that there will be a lot of audience interaction and need for volunteers," Wells says.

"I don't think people appreciate that there is no place like this. They had a tagline back in the day - Like Nowhere in America. This is the only place for this kind of entertainment where you can come publicly and see magic. It gives me goosebumps just to think this place is reopening."

He's hoping that when the time comes, you won't believe your eyes.

5. The Magic Word Podcast - Bill Malone And Charlie Frye
--------------------------------------------
Message by Scott Wells, M.I.M.C. with Gold Star

While at this year's MAGIC Live! convention, I was able to find a quiet room for a half hour and turn it into a loud room. Thanks to Sherry Frye (better known as "Company"), she coordinated a small "summit" with Bill Malone and her husband, Charlie Frye. It didn't take long for the hilarity to ensue but I was able to get in a few "serious" questions and their thoughtful replies regarding stress, performance jitters, the Illusionists tour, travel, and more.

This is a very funny episode and even Stan Allen makes a brief cameo during the podcast when he stuck his head in the room to see what we were doing. At the end of the podcast, we review three different tricks from Murphy's Magic Supplies that are available from your favorite dealer.

You can watch videos of both Bill Malone and Charlie Frye, see some candid photos along with some promo shots, read the blog, listen to the podcast online and download the MP3 file at: https://www.themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/449-bill-malone-and-charlie-frye-and-company

Among the many ways you can listen to The Magic Word, we are now listed in Spotify where you can get your weekly podcast fix from us. Of course you can always subscribe and listen through iTunes and other podcatchers. Be sure to subscribe so you don't miss another episode. Next week will be episode #450 and feature the legendary creator of the classic method for the Torn and Restored Newspaper, Gene Anderson.

6. The In Transit Force - John Carey #17

Message by John Carey (UK)

Here is a nice card force that requires motivation. It is also a good example of an in-transit action as Ascanio would have said.

Your force card is on top. False shuffle retaining it there. Hand to hand spread for a spectator to touch any card. Once they do so, separate both hands with loosely squared packets in each hand. Push off the top card of the left-hand packet and say you will put it under the card box. As both hands are full you apparently take the card on top of the right-hand packet so the left hand can pick up the card box.

In reality you pull the card back square on top of the left-hand packet, just like a false count. Without hesitation the left hand reaches down to the table and picks up the box. Deal off the force card from the right-hand packet and then drop the box on top as an in-transit action.

As I said at the outset, this force requires a motivation. I use it for some prediction effects where a card is put sight-unseen on the table.

Ever have that awkwardness when you get to an event and realize that trying to find the main contact is like trying to find a needle in a haystack? Have you ever felt weird by showing up at the event and the client simply does not know who you are? Even though you may be wearing clothes that simple screams magician, the client still does not put 2 and 2 together. They may have seen your website or photos numerous times but at that very moment they suddenly develop amnesia.

How can you overcome these awkward meet and greet moment and how can we set up practices so that you are perceived as a professional the moment you get at an event? You want to make that first greeting with a client a good one and also make a favorable first impression with them.

How can you do this and do it well? What can you say and do to ensure it goes over well? You do not want to waste any of your set up time and you do not want to take time away from the client's duties. You want to keep it short and sweet and professional. You want just enough for both parties to know who each other is and let them know you are there. You can then get the quick information you need to begin set up and have the client pleased that you have things under control.

Often times the client at the event may not even be there or they may be involved in other things. In this case, you need to ask ahead of time about who you should ask for upon arrival. In my talks with the client (as well as my agreements and contracts I send out) it always states what time I am arriving and who I should ask for upon arriving at the event. I cannot always assume it is going to be the client. It could very well be someone else. Asking ahead of time saves me a lot of time and frustrations.

I also ask for the contact and client's cell phones as part of my confirmation agreement with the client. This way I can touch base with the client as I approach the venue. By doing it this way, they know I am about to arrive and can prepare accordingly.

When you arrive at the event venue, there are certain rules I always try to abide by:

- I never will walk into a house or private residence even if the door is open and others are walking in. I will always knock or ring the doorbell. This is just a common courtesy.

- Do not assume that the person answering at an event is the client. In many times they may not be and may just be trying to assist you.

- If you are doing a family show, do not assume that the spouse will know who you are or that you are coming. In many cases it is one spouse who usually handles all the arrangements.

- When someone does approach you, I will always simply state who I am and that I am the entertainer and politely ask for the contact that I am supposed to touch base with.

- When meeting the client, a nice smile and a firm handshake can really say many things before any words are ever spoken. It is just a polite gesture to show you are a professional.

- After the handshake I will simply state who I am and that I am their entertainer for the event and excited to be there. I will ask them to show me to the stage or performance area and make sure I have what I need. This is my moment to take a quick sweep to ensure I have everything from them. If I need something, I can take this moment to ask for it while I start to bring things in and set up. I like to do this now because once the client leaves, it is often hard to get them back to you. You also do not want to have to keep bothering them. This is my time to make sure I have what I need and then ask the client if they have any questions for me.

- If everything is good at this point, I can thank them again for having me and state everything looks great and that I will start to bring things in to set up. I will ask if bringing stuff in a certain way is still ok with them. This is always planned out ahead of time, but I always like to ask again just to be sure. Once again it is about greeting them and making that first positive impression.

These are very simple concepts but ones that really can make a lasting impression if followed. People often forget that the first impression you make can really set the tone of the event going forward. I never consider my job starting when the curtains open. Part of being a professional is all the little things many of us take for granted. Meeting and greeting your client appropriately are an important skill to learn to do well.

As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your thoughts. So, if you have any thoughts on my articles or suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly at KyleKellyMagic@gmail.com. I would love to hear from you.

Message by Danny Archer (US)

This year is the 15th edition of the biggest and best mentalism convention in America... MINDvention. It will take place from October 21st to the 23rd in Las Vegas, NV with a workshop from Kennedy as an extra charge event on the 24th. MINDvention gathers an international crowd of working mentalists, enthusiasts, and people who are just
starting to explore this most fascinating topic.

The talent lineup so far includes the aforementioned Kennedy, who is presenting again for his second time. His high energy style and polished presentations are one of the reasons he is one of the busiest performers in the UK.

Timon Krause is one of the Netherland's leading mentalists. With a background in Philosophy and Theater he has been lecturing on the philosophy of mentalism and performance theory all around the world.

Ian Rowland, also from the UK, has performed and lectured four times at the Blackpool Convention, six times at 'MAGIC LIVE!' in Las Vegas and three times at the Magic Circle. His Penguin Magic lecture is one of the most successful mentalism lectures ever, with over seventy 5-star ratings.

From America we have the Evasons presenting their incredible two-person mentalism act. The Evasons have been honored with some of the top awards in their field. They are the first recipients of "The Mentalism Award" from the Milbourne Christopher Foundation. This will be the first two-person act to present at MINDvention, and we look forward to an incredible show from these two hard working pros.

Harrison Greenbaum not only does devastating mentalism, he will also make you laugh out loud as he performs. An incredibly engaging performer who does more than 600 shows a year. That means he's doesn't just have a ton of experience, but that he's also very, very tired. His lecture will teach you techniques to create your own original material.

Gil Eagles is a legend in the mentalism world and his performance last year of his Q&A act was incredible and earned him a well-deserved standing ovation. Gil will be back this year with an all new presentation sharing his thoughts, ideas and experiences from a man who spent a lifetime on the platform.

Ken Weber, who is an influential member of the mentalism community and he wrote one of the most respected books on performance techniques will be the subject of a sit-down interview conducted by another accomplished performer Eric Samuels. This should be a wonderful and insightful interview from these two knowledgeable mentalists.

David Gerard is a mentalist from San Francisco, CA. His modern approach to the art is showcased at his weekly theater show as well as numerous private and corporate engagements nationwide. His talk at MINDvention 2016 garnered acclaim from hobbyists and pros alike, and we're happy to have him back this year for a rapid-fire lecture full of tips and tricks.

9. New Zealand's Richard Webster Workshop In Berlin
--------------------------------------------
Message by Steffen Jacobs

Among mentalists and psychic readers, New Zealand's Richard Webster certainly doesn't need an introduction. For more than three decades, Richard has been one of the most, if not THE most influential psychic entertainer, and a pre-eminent authority in this field. He has published more than thirty books for the trade, including such money-making topics as psychic parties, ladies' nights and pitch books. He is also one of the most successful authors on the new age market where literally millions of copies of his books have been sold.

It has been said - and rightfully so - that Richard prompted more people to successful careers as psychic entertainers and readers than anyone else. Chances are that you're one of them - or will be!

If you're lucky enough to live in Europe, here is your chance to spend two full days with Richard Webster and learn from the master himself ...

The Richard Webster Berlin Seminar: A Masterclass in Psychic Entertainment

The event will take place on Friday, October 5th and Saturday, October 6th, 2018 in Berlin, Germany. Richard Webster will be there to share not only his groundbreaking techniques but also his most recent thoughts and ideas on psychic entertainment.

Whether you live in Germany, Austria, the Netherlands, the UK, Denmark, Hungary or, for that matter, any other European country, your next step in becoming an even more polished performer is only a short flight away. The event takes place in the parlor of an elegant hotel in the western city center of Berlin and is easy to reach with public transportation. You'll love the stylish surroundings!

For a detailed curriculum, visit www.richardwebsterberlin.wordpress.com

Many serious pros would regard a consultation with Richard as an investment that makes their acts and performances more lucrative. They would readily pay hundreds of euros for just one hour of personal instruction. So how much should a two-day-, twelve-hour seminar with a
strictly limited number of 15 participants cost? ER800? ER1.000?

Not even close. If you act quickly and book until August 31th, 2018, you will pay unbelievably low ER246,50!

This includes special lecture notes, an eBook and - for a limited time - a discount on all of Richards books for the trade!

Afterwards the price increases to - still very affordable - ER290.

So, what are you waiting for? Secure your place at the Richard Webster Berlin Seminar: A Masterclass in Psychic Entertainment! Register now!

In order to register, visit www.richardwebsterberlin.wordpress.com

Curriculum

Part I
Psychic Effects

There are magic tricks and there are mentalism effects. What Richard Webster teaches you in this section of the seminar belongs to a different category: psychic effects. These are valuable techniques to convince your audiences that you have special powers at your command - often without reverting to any trickery at all.

Part II
Cold Reading Techniques for the 21st Century

Cold reading as Richard practices it doesn't mean that you rattle off stock lines in order to deceive gullible people. It means that you'll be able to give meaningful, helpful readings to discerning people you have never met before and impress them with the accuracy and depth of your insight into their character and troubles.

Part III
Super Practice Session

This won't be one of the seminars where you return home with a foggy mind! Be it the handling of a certain psychic effect or the clever wording of a cold reading technique, Richard will guide you calmly and helpfully through the learning process, so you'll be able to utilize his innovative ideas in the briefest possible time.

Part IV
Entertaining Mentalism

Richard Webster strongly believes that entertainment should form an integral part of mentalism. His own style bears witness to that, as all of his presentations are charming and fun to watch. In this part of the seminar, Richard demonstrates how humor can add to the impact of your act even if you market yourself as "the real thing".

Part V
An Afternoon with Richard Webster

After all the hard work, it's time to relax, grab a cup of coffee and have a chat. This is your chance to personally get to know the man who has been - and continues to be - such an important force in the business and art of psychic entertainment. Moreover, you can ask him all the questions you ever wanted to!
