3. Broken Wand - Moi-Yo Miller Montes
--------------------------------------------
Message by Gerald Taylor (Australia)

Dante's assistant Moi-Miller Montes passed away at 104 years of age.

Her daughter, Charisse, was with her when she died. Moi-Miller also has a son who lives in the U.S.

Wikipedia
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moi-Yo_Miller

Moi-Yo Miller was the stage name of Mona Loretta Miller (born 24 April 1914), an Australian who became the principal assistant to the stage magician Dante.

Miller came originally from Geelong, in the Australian state of Victoria. She first met Dante (aka Harry Jansen) while still in her late teens when she was appearing in a musical revue in Melbourne. Dante had decided to recruit an Australian girl as an assistant after, in his words, "he saw in Melbourne more beautiful women per square block than he had seen in any other part of the World".

Miller dated Dante's son, Bill, and went on to work with Dante, staying with him for the rest of his performing career. She very quickly became his main assistant and an integral part of his show Sim Sala Bim. She was often billed as "Australia's Most Beautiful Woman". She once estimated that she had been sawed in half around 11,800 times during her career.

Miller became highly regarded among professional magic performers and is widely cited as one of the all-time great magic assistants. She features in the 2008 documentary movie, Women in Boxes, which explores the vital role of assistants in magic.

In 1993 she received the Dragon Award presented by the J. Marberger Stuart Foundation. She celebrated her 100th birthday in 2014.

4. Shin Lim Heading 'America's Got Talent' Stage Show In Vegas

Article forwarded on by Peter Phillips (US)

By Jay Jones

If you didn't have tickets to last week's finale of "America's Got Talent," don't worry. Another chance to see the winner perform live is coming up in Las Vegas.

Tickets went on sale Friday for "America's Got Talent Live," the stage version of the popular TV show, appearing in Vegas from Nov. 2-4.

Headlining the performances at Paris Las Vegas will be winner Shin Lim, the magician whose remarkable sleight-of-hand wowed audiences and judges alike. His first-place finish earned him $1 million, plus four gigs on the Strip.

Joining Lim onstage will be several other Season 13 finalists, including comedians Vicki Barbolak and Samuel J. Comroe, trapeze artists Duo Transcend, singer Courtney Hadwin and electric violinist Brian King Joseph.

Shows will be held at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 2-3 and at 2 and 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 4 in the Paris Theater.

Tickets range from $55-$185, plus taxes and fees.

5. Tape Face In Las Vegas!
---------------------------------------
Message by Nick Lewin (US)

It is astounding all the great variety of talent that New Zealand has given the world! Last week I was in Las Vegas subbing for Mac King at Harrah's and had the opportunity to catch The Tape Face Show that has found a new home in the casino in The House of Tape Theatre. What a delightful surprise it was!

Tape Face (formerly The Boy With Tape On His Face) whose real name is Sam Wills, began his performing career in Timaru at the age of thirteen while studying to become a clown. His eclectic interests in performance arts fueled his unique performing style. After considerable success in New Zealand and Australia moved to London, England and he established a fine career there that included appearing in the 2011 Royal Variety Performance. In 2016 his career expanded to America when he scored very strongly in the 11th season of America's Got Talent and went on to become a finalist in the show.

After several other Las Vegas gigs Tape Face seems to have found a great home at Harrah's with whom he recently signed a four-year contract. His show is building very nicely and it is my belief that he will become a very major headliner in the years to come. His unique vision of modern-day mime, prop comedy, theatrics and general craziness make Tape Face something very different in a city where so much is the same.

The 75-minute show that we saw had the audiences in stitches throughout and Tape Face received a very well-deserved standing ovation. The sound and lighting were superb and did a great deal to deliver the excitement and rapid-fire pacing that made the show such a hit with the Vegas audience. However, leaving aside everything else involved in this surprisingly complex show, it was the strong communication skills displayed by Tape Face that made the show such a huge success.

I don't think I have ever seen more effective use of the eyes by any other performer; every glance and visual reaction was masterful. While Tape Face may have a solid piece of duct tape covering his mouth nothing was left unsaid during the performance. Maria Karvouni of Forbes Magazine wrote that Tape Face revives silent film acting, using his facial expressions and body movements to captivate his audience: "His simplicity creates a complexity which results in a lot of laughter." I'm not sure you can really put it any better.

Next time you visit Las Vegas make sure that you find the time to catch this five-star gem of a show. The show plays six days a week (dark Mondays) at 7:00pm with ticket pricing starting at 63 Dollars.

6. David Berglas Scrapbooks - Episode 22
--------------------------------------------
Message by David Berglas (US)

Last week, (Episode 21) I described how I created headlines when I was touring the variety theatres in the 1950's. For instance, I displayed a cheque for £100 (a lot of money in those days) in a glass case outside the theatre, offering it to anyone if I could not tell them their first or last name.

This week, Friday, 28th September (Episode 22), I explain how I was able to hold two press conferences, in two different parts of the world, at the same time and date.

Next week, Friday, 6th October (Episode 23), I recount various blindfold drives, which I did in different international cities. Probably the most memorable was driving through heavy traffic in Piccadilly, with a petrified world champion racing driver Graham Hill in the passenger seat!

7. The Magic Word Podcast - Fielding West And Earl Chaney
--------------------------------------------
Message by Scott Wells, M.I.M.C. with Gold Star

While at this year's MAGIC Live! convention, we went to the home of Fielding West to celebrate his birthday. While there among many luminaries in our magic world (i.e. Lance Burton, Les Arnold, Carlton, Norm Nielsen, among others), I heard many interesting stories. At one point, I thought these stories could be lost if I didn't turn on the microphone.

So, while Earl Chaney and Fielding were "sparring" with stories, throwing tales back and forth and trying to top each other, I asked if I could record their conversation. They acquiesced and the results are bare naked in this week's podcast. Some of the stories I captured might be considered to be a little "off color" but still appropriate and not rude. But they are tales of people, agents, and acts in old Las Vegas and I know you will love it.

You can see some of the photos taken at the birthday party, listen online to the podcast, hear some product reviews, and download the MP3 at: https://www.themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/451-chaney-and-west

8. Lazy Man's Mystery - John Carey #18
--------------------------------------------
Message by John Carey (UK)
https://carey-scene.com/jc-main

For more years than I can remember, I've always loved performing C.O Williams Lazy Man's Card to Pocket, from The Encyclopedia of Card Tricks. Recently, it dawned on me that it makes a pretty nice mystery card too.

The Jokers start out on top of the deck. Mention that you will place three mystery cards onto the table. Push off the top 3 cards of the deck and supposedly table all of them. In reality steal back the third card and table just two cards. Hand out the deck for mixing and, upon return, ask your helper to call out any number from five to ten inclusive. Let's say they call out seven.
False count five cards as six into your right hand and table this packet. Push off the top card of the deck and hand it to your helper to look at and then sign. Have them drop it back on top of the deck and then pick up the tabled packet and drop it on top of all.

Ask your helper to hold out a palm-up hand and then place the deck onto it. Make your mystical motions over the deck and ask the spectator to begin dealing and counting to their thought of number. Stop them when, in this example they get to six. Then ask them to turn over the seventh card, where they will see that their signed card has vanished. As they do this you have perfect shade to top palm their card into full right-hand palm. Table the packet and then let the right hand descend over the mystery cards and add on the palmed card as you scoop them up off the table and drop them into your left hand.

"These three cards were placed on the table before we started. Let me show you two of them. A Joker, a face-down card of mystery and another Joker. Jack, they do say that you cannot be in two places at the same time. But maybe, just maybe, you can!"

Suiting actions to words, execute a stud bottom deal, dealing a face-up Joker onto the table. Then deal the next card face-down on top of it, followed by dealing the remaining Joker face-up on top of those, forming a sandwich. Then build it up and bring it home, extracting the face-down card from between the Jokers and revealing that inexplicably it is their signed card :-)

I am a firm believer in getting to thank my audiences and giving them a chance to meet me after my shows. It is a great way of letting them know I appreciate them and a means in which to have kids meet an entertainer in person. It can really make an impact on them.

Whenever I bring this topic up, folks ask me if I sell my autograph. In other words am I making money off of it? I never sell my autograph at all. My feeling is that if not for the audience, I would be out of work. My audiences are everything to me.

Greeting my audiences and allowing them to get free autographs also does other important things for me. For starters, it allows the client/s to see crowds of people engaging me afterwards. It just simply looks good in their eyes.

Also, if I have a BOR table selling my products, this is a great way and method of getting them over to it. I have one part of the table where I am standing to meet the audience and sign autographs for the kids who want them. This leads folks over in droves to my BOR table and creates an atmosphere where they are much more willing to spend money while they are over there.

Now one method to get folks over to want an autograph is by offering them something totally for free in which you can sign for them. There are many options here. One of the easiest is to make a Magicians Assistant Certificate and give them out to any and every child.

They get the certificate from you after the show and you sign it for them right there. Not only does it give them something they want, but you get them to your BOR table and they go home with something special that also brands you and has your contact information on it. This can
easily add up to more shows for you later on.

Other things you can give out for free and sign could be postcards, your own trading cards or even free photos of you. The idea is to give something to them of value and do so freely.

Remember that in many cases, you are the first live magician a lot of the audience may have ever seen. It is important to our art that you conduct yourself in a professional manner and allow folks to see you and magic as a good thing. As something they enjoy, want to see more of and respect.

Signing autographs is also a wonderful way in which to engage the audience. Getting a chance to talk with them, thank them and hear what they have to say. When signing autographs, I am always listening but also asking those questions, this is a great opportunity for you to learn from them. What did they like about the show? What was their favorite effect, etc.? It is a means to get a good quote or even a testimonial.

In short, show respect to them to gain respect back. Signing an autograph is a gesture of thanks. It is a means in which to show appreciation to your audience. Without them, who are we really?

As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your thoughts. So, if you have any thoughts on my articles or suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly at magic4u02@aol.com. I would love to hear from you.
