8. Debbie McGee Marks Five Years Since Paul Daniels' Death
--------------------------------------------
Article forwarded by Peter Dornan
Belfast
Telegraph
Debbie
McGee has paid tribute to her "wonderful" husband
Paul Daniels on the fifth anniversary of his death.
The
former Strictly Come Dancing contestant, 62, shared a picture
of them sat together against the backdrop of a lake with
her more than 43,000 Twitter followers.
She
wrote: "Five years ago today I lost this wonderful
man. Gosh how I miss the joy he gave me. A day didn't go
by without laughter.
"Huge
love to his Sons & Grandchildren."
The
couple had been married for 28 years - and together for
a decade before that - when Daniels died of a brain tumour
at the age of 77 in March 2016.
McGee
rose to fame as magician and TV presenter Daniels' assistant
before they married in April 1988.
In
her youth, she won a place at the Royal Ballet School and
went on to join the Iranian National Ballet Company in Tehran,
but the overthrowing of the Shah by Ayatollah Khomeni in
the 1979 Revolution meant she had to return to the UK.
She
first met Daniels after being chosen to perform on stage
in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, for a summer show, and returned
for a second summer in Bournemouth.
McGee
competed in the 2017 series of BBC One's Strictly and reached
the final but was beaten by Holby City actor Joe McFadden.
In
2019 she returned to win the Christmas special.

10. The Old Way and the New Way - John Carey #112
-------------------------------------------
Message by John Carey (UK)
http://www.johncareymagic.co.uk/
The
old way and the new way is a simple but strong two card
revelation. It's the presentation that makes it play and
has been a favorite impromptu piece for some time now. My
inspiration was a great effect called The Amateur And The
Professional by Jay Sankey, that appeared in Ariel Frailich's
book Card Stories.
Commence
the performance by handing out the deck for shuffling. "Today
we will have a couple of cards chosen and I will show you
how we find one the old way and the other the new way!"
Take
back the deck and start a hand to hand spread and have spectator
one take a card and then continue spreading and have a second
spectator remove a card also. Once they have committed the
cards to memory spread off about a third of the deck and
have spectator one replace their
card. Hofzinser cull (see Card College) this card under
the spread and continue spreading. Have the second spectator
return their card, which you again cull under the spread.
Square up the deck and dribble the cards in the hands. The
two selections are now secretly on the bottom.
Execute
an in the hands riffle shuffle and as you flex the cards
prior to riffling them off for the shuffle, you will be
able to get a nice clear glimpse of the bottom card. Remember
it and then execute the shuffle, retaining the two selections
on the bottom. Table the deck and have someone cut the deck
and complete the cut.
"Firstly
let me show you the old way selected cards are found."
Pick up the deck and turn it face up. Start spreading the
cards with the faces towards you, pausing here and there
until you get to the card you glimpsed earlier, the second
selection. up-jog it and close the deck up, at the same
time getting a left pinky break beneath the card to the
left of it; the first selection. Hold the deck in the left
hand and ask spectator two to name their card. A moment
later slowly lower your left hand to reveal that the up-jogged
card is their card.
"That
was the old way, which has served magicians well for centuries."
We will now switch the jogged for the other selection using
a beautiful sleight of John Bannon's called The Touch Switch,
published in his book Mentalissimo. The palm down right
hand comes over the deck.
The next actions must seamlessly blend to be deceptive.
Push the jogged card square and immediately lift all the
cards above your break away, turning the right hand palm
outwards. With absolutely no hesitation the left hand comes
over the right hand packet and peels off the face down card
from the right hand packet and then allows it to drop gently
to the table. Timing is everything here and once you get
it right the switch looks perfect. Assemble the deck and
set it aside.
"The
new way of finding cards doesn't allow me to use the deck.
Watch!" Suiting actions to words, slowly wave your
hand over the face down tabled card in mysterious fashion.
Then ask your first spectator to name their card. Allow
them to turn over the card to conclude with a most magical
transformation!

11. No Stone Unturned - Paul Stone
--------------------------------------------
Message by Paul Stone (US)
Over
the past 40 years I've been very fortunate to work with
and book many of the world's greatest magicians.
Although
these performers had their own unique style, there is one
trait that was consistent in many of them.
They
were all very talented of course, but the thing they had
in common was huge self-belief and a work ethic to be the
best they could be.
I
could name several performers that could justifiably claim
this distinction but right now I'm going to focus on just
a couple.
My
good friend and Italian magic legend Silvan is a classic
example. He has been at the top of his game and the premier
magician in Italy for decades. Silvan has dozens of TV appearances
to his credit, and has twice received the honour of being
awarded the title of 'Magician of the Year' by the Academy
of Magic Arts in Hollywood.
Silvan
has written 12 magic books and released 13 magic sets over
his long career. And yet, even now, at an age when most
people would be putting their feet up and enjoying a well-earned
retirement, he still maintains the hunger and desire to
entertain. And that is the secret!
Another
magician that this applied to, and a man who divided opinion
within the magic world, was John Calvert.
His
career was, without a shadow of doubt, unique. Aptly described
as the 'Indiana Jones of Magic', he was an adventurer, a
movie star and an outstanding magician. Most of all, he
was a showman whose self-belief was off the charts.
I
can attest to this from personal experience! When John was
96 years old, he was booked to present his lecture for Gary
Darwin's Magic Club in Las Vegas. He arrived at Buma's Bar,
where the magic club met, driving a huge truck loaded with
his whole illusion show. The conditions were in no way suitable
for an illusion show, the venue was a back room behind the
main bar, but that didn't deter John Calvert.
His
show started at 10.30pm and he broke for an intermission
at 12 Midnight, during which time he was furiously selling
several items of Calvert memorabilia!
A
few minutes into the intermission his wonderful wife, and
assistant, Tammy, came running over to me saying that John
wanted to have a word with me.
I
went over to John and I'll never forget his words, 'When
I'm 100, I want you to produce my full show at the London
Palladium'. Somewhat surprised I replied, 'John, when you
reach 99, call me and we can talk about it'!
I
really didn't give it any further thought until three years
later when my phone rang, and the voice on the other end
of the line said, 'Hi Paul, this is John Calvert, let's
talk about the London Palladium'.
I
should mention that John had toured the UK in the 1940's,
a tour that was due to finish in style at the London Palladium.
However, that dream was sadly taken away from him at the
last minute, as his show was transferred to another theatre
in London.
This
was because a young British comedian who had played the
Palladium the previous week, had been held over for another
week due to his success. His name was Norman Wisdom.
So,
it was always a major ambition of John's to get another
opportunity to play the Palladium.
John
was now 99, and although his enthusiasm and 'joie de vivre'
was still very much in evidence, his health was failing,
and honestly, he wasn't up to performing.
I
had however, given my word that I would try to make this
happen for him. I wanted John to play the London Palladium
at the age of 100, and coincidentally in 2011, it was also
the 100 year Anniversary of the Palladium too.
I
booked the London Palladium, and an excellent cast which
included Mac King, Hans Klok, and Jeff Hobson.
The
challenge was to find a way to somehow feature John Calvert.
Over
the years one of John's famous cameo routines was the 'Lazy
Magician'. This was a short routine where John, assisted
by four glamorous young dancers, would sit on a chair and
tie three silk handkerchiefs onto a magic wand attached
to two long pieces of rope, held by the dancers as they
'shook their booty' to an upbeat piece of music.
At
the appropriate moment John would remove the wand, and the
three silks would 'magically' untie themselves.
Whilst
not the strongest piece of magic, it was fun and visually
entertaining.
More
importantly, having spoken to Tammy, we decided between
us that it was probably the only effect that John, in his
state of health at that time, would be able to perform.
But
John wasn't happy with this. He was convinced that he could
still perform his full illusion show! And during the six
months leading up to the show in London, he regularly emailed
me, increasingly berating me for not letting him perform
his illusions.
At
one point John became so ill that it was touch and go that
he was going to make it through, let alone perform on stage
at the Palladium.
But
I'm pleased to say he rallied, and the show was going to
happen. I'd arranged with Tammy that she and John should
fly into London a couple of days before the show so that
he could work on the routine with me and my choreographer,
and the four dancers.
From
the moment John arrived into London, he was angry with me
and difficult. In his mind I had prevented him from performing
his full illusion show.
In
reality, even with two days rehearsal, John was just about
able to perform the 'lazy magician' routine.
I'd
scheduled John's appearance to open the Second Half of the
show. I was the emcee and I introduced John.
When
the curtains opened, he was flanked by 8 beautiful dancers
and he received an incredible ovation. And rightly so, here
he was performing at the world famous London Palladium Theatre
at the age of 100!
With
Tammy's help and a little prompting, John got through the
routine, and took his well-deserved applause from the packed
audience.
And
history will record that John Calvert achieved his dream
of playing the London Palladium when he was 100 years old!
There
is a lot more to this story, and maybe one day you'll hear
me recount it at a lecture. Suffice it to say that when
John Calvert left London after the show, he was still fuming
with me for not letting him perform his full show.
But
it's that exact self-belief that allowed him such a long
career and helped him live until he was 102! Respect!
To
be continued
.

13. The Orchante Saga - Beginnings
-------------------------------------
Written by the late Tommy Orchard (The Amazing Orchante)
The last, and what became the most sought after and sensational
part of his performance, was only attempted after much study
and practice of Yoga techniques. Indeed, his first ever
performance landed him in the Whakatane hospital but, he
persevered and perfected what he
called his 'String Thing' ('Psychic Surgery'), where he
swallowed 6ft of string, cut into his stomach with a knife
and then invited members of the audience to pull, with the
aid of surgical clamps, the string from the self-inflicted
wound, extracting it slowly, inch by inch, out from within
his stomach! It was: 'The most 'mind numbing', never to
be forgotten experience, for both volunteers and audiences
alike'!
1968,
Tom married his first wife Sharon, who bore him two sons,
Jason and Darin; then in 1971, he met Veronica. They toured
continuously, all over New Zealand with Tom's show, with
Veronica an integral part of the performance.
They
married in 1976, and emigrated via Fiji, to Sydney, Australia.
It was a good move. Tom and Veronica, better known throughout
Australia as: 'The Amazing Orchanté and Kim', were
an immediate success. They toured extensively, performing
in various Top Line clubs/cabarets & theatres, and were
often booked to support national and international stars,
such as the late Sir Harry Secombe and appeared regularly
on major television shows. Tom had a regular spot
as 'resident close-up magician 'on Channel 10 - a live,
nationwide broadcast called 'Good Morning Australia', as
well as performing 'close-up' sleight of hand magic (the
most difficult branch of magic to perform), in Sydney's
most exclusive restaurant, the 'Manor House' - which opened
up that particular market for other magicians, in Sydney.
They
also entertained, with their various shows, several times
a year on the cruise ship: The M. S. 'Minghua', each a six
week voyage that took them from Sydney, up the east coast
of Australia to New Guinea, the Philippines, Japan, Shanghai,
Hong Kong, Guam and back home to Sydney.
Sydney
was quite polluted at that time and it was affecting Veronica's
health, so they moved up north, between the Gold Coast and
Brisbane. Unlike Sydney/New South Wales, where the revenue
from poker machines paid for everything - entertainment
etc; poker machines were banned in the State of Queensland,
- so money for their performance fees was not readily available
and work was very thin.
They
emigrated to England in 1985 - where they soon became one
of the most sought after acts on the U. K. Club and discotheque
circuit, and were awarded the coveted - Specialty Act of
the Year in 1988! They toured Europe extensively, Switzerland,
Germany, France, Italy, Finland, Sweden, including several
tours each year of both Ireland and Norway where they were
extremely popular.
Tom's
first appearance on British television was in 1987, on a
live, Nation -Wide Show called 'The Last Resort' - hosted
by Jonathan Ross, who nearly redecorated the studio floor,
when Tom performed his famed 'psychic surgery'! It caused
a nationwide sensation and with the resultant public reaction
throughout the United Kingdom and Ireland, it became the
major topic on both radio and television chat shows, for
several months afterwards! The Amazing Orchanté and
Kim - had most definitely arrived in the U.K.!!!
Sal
Murillo, President of the 'Unique Entertainment Agency'
in Las Vegas, contacted Tom in 1993 - offering him a place
in his 'very exclusive stable of acts' - "only The
Best Of The Best" was Sal Murillo's motto! Tom was
delighted and accepted immediately. Tom and Veronica's Television/Club
performances were now being watched live, by millions of
people across Asia, Europe, Scandinavia and South America!
Japan, Spain, Sweden, Chile and Mexico - New York was next
then - Las Vegas!
1995
- tragedy struck! While touring in Ireland, Tom found that
he was having difficulty breathing during the shows and,
carrying equipment into and out of clubs. He thought that
he had contracted a nasty strain of a viral infection. On
arriving back in England and, after various breathing tests,
X Rays and CT scans at the hospital, it was found that he
had - 'Chronic Emphysema'! They did one more tour, in Norway,
followed by a television appearance in Stockholm, Sweden.
That was the last time Tom was to work. He was forced to
give up his profession (which was also his hobby), his beloved
magic, and his career in show business, which spanned more
than 35 years - travelling the globe!
Tom
is now busy writing, by request, his autobiography called:
'The Amazing Orchanté Saga', which at this point
in time runs to 120 odd foolscap pages and 80,000 words!
It is being read by over 5000 magicians in 56 different
countries, via a 'Magic New Zealand' E - Zine (Instigated
and run by N.Z 's top International magician, Alan Watson
and his wife Michele), on the Internet and is 'for magicians
only', although copies are being sent out to friends and
family. Apart from telling Tom's story, the Saga also contains
some interesting story 'bites' of many other New Zealand's
show business artistes. The feedback from his 'tales' has
been tremendous and, his
style of writing has, only just recently, brought an offer
of publishing rights! It will probably turn out to be quite
a hefty tome by the time it is finished, as it starts in
1954, and he has only just started on the 1970s.
Apart
from magic, his hobbies and interests also include: gardening
and music, particularly the Sixties. Easy listening and
Jazz are right up there as well. His favourite singer is
Neil Diamond,
closely followed by Frankie Laine and Frank Sinatra (he
has an extensive vinyl record collection - both 45s and
LPs, in mint condition).
He
is also, to put it mildly, an avid 'Film Buff' and on last
count, has in excess of over 750 videos with at least two
films on each, which equates to well in excess of 1,500
films! This is not
counting a further 100 videos on various subjects, in a
special purpose built cabinet, or the entire set of the
James Bond movies or, the almost complete collection of
The X Files! The films cover
everything from Westerns, Sci - Fi, Drama, major 'Block
Busters', Musicals etc., as well as Factual and Historical
documentaries. He also manages to fly all over the world
in his Cessna and Learjet, with his Microsoft Flight Simulator
2002, the latest version, as well as writing his Autobiography/Saga!
