Join
us for as little as $35 a year at www.geniimagazine.com
and get digital access to every issue of both Genii and
MAGIC ever published!
On
our cover this month is magic's holy place - David Copperfield's
International Museum and Library of Conjuring Arts, the
largest repository of magic history on earth. The props
of Robert-Houdin, Alexander and Adelaide Herrmann, Kellar,
Houdini, Thurston, Blackstone, Dante, Cardini, Mr. Electric,
Vernon, Channing Pollock, and pretty much everyone else
on the planet are all inside. That's just the start. Untold
numbers of posters, scrapbooks, notebooks, and props of
all sorts line the shelves in room after room after room.
There's
an enormous library, a full size reproduction of Lou Tannen's
Magic Shop, and an accurate reproduction of the theater
in Martinka's magic shop. All of Robert-Houdin's greatest
secrets are in their own room. It's a staggering jaw-dropping
sight and one could easily spend a month and not see everything.
The photo on our cover shows David standing at the edge
of a staircase overlooking the largest room. Every bit of
your hopes and dreams about magic are waiting in the museum.
And
now you can visit from the comfort of your home because
the museum has birthed a book by Mr. Copperfield, Richard
Wiseman, and David Britland: David Copperfield's History
of Magic. Published by Simon & Schuster, its release
date is later this month. The book can be purchased from
amazon.com for a bargain price. But, you may want to order
it from Barnes & Noble because their edition will have
an additional chapter not available elsewhere (look for
the "B&N Exclusive Edition"). We're going
to give you a head start this month with a Genii-exclusive
article about the preparation of the book and three excerpts.
Homer Liwag did all the swanky photography for both the
book and article.
Columns
this month include a look at the Jon Martin mechanical Rising
Cards in John Gaughan's "Chamber of Mystery";
David Kaye explores what it means to have a really bad show
in "Expert at the Kids' Table"; "The Eye,"
brought to us by Vanessa Armstrong, slings the latest news
and mini-interviews our way; David Britland slips on oil
and falls into water in "Cardopolis"; Roberto
Mansilla puts a gaff to good use in "Artifices";
fun title award goes to "The Card You Picked Before
You Took The One You Chose" in Jon Racherbaumer's "Exhumations";
Shawn McMaster walks you through a full evening at The Magic
Castle in "Knights at the Magic Castle"; Jonathan
Friedman embraces Halloween in a big way with two creepy
tricks in "Magicana"; we wrap it up with reviews
of books, tricks, and videos by David Britland, Mark Phillips,
and Joe M. Turner.

4. David Copperfield's History of Magic
--------------------------------------------
Book
launch October 26, 2021
by David Copperfield
An illustrated, illuminating insight into the world of illusion
from the world's greatest and most successful magician,
capturing its audacious and inventive practitioners, and
showcasing the art form's most famous artifacts housed at
David Copperfield's secret museum.
In
this personal journey through a unique and remarkable performing
art, David Copperfield profiles twenty-eight of the world's
most groundbreaking magicians. From the 16th-century magistrate
who wrote the first book on conjuring to the roaring twenties
and the man who fooled Houdini, to the woman who levitated,
vanished, and caught bullets in her teeth, David Copperfield's
History of Magic takes you on a wild journey through the
remarkable feats of the greatest magicians in history.
These
magicians were all outsiders in their own way, many of them
determined to use magic to escape the strictures of class
and convention. But they all transformed popular culture,
adapted to social change, discovered the inner workings
of the human mind, embraced the latest technological and
scientific discoveries, and took the art of magic to unprecedented
heights.
The
incredible stories are complimented by over 100 never-before-seen
photographs of artifacts from Copperfield's exclusive Museum
of Magic, including a 16th-century manual on sleight of
hand, Houdini's straightjackets, handcuffs, and water torture
chamber, Dante's famous sawing-in-half apparatus, Alexander's
high-tech turban that allowed him to read people's minds,
and even some coins that may have magically passed through
the hands of Abraham Lincoln.
By
the end of the book, you'll be sure to share Copperfield's
passion for the power of magic.

6. Magic Circle's First Female President
--------------------------------------------
BBC
News
Magic
Circle: First female president says role 'is an honour'
A
magician who has become the first female president of the
Magic Circle says it is a "real honour" to have
been given the role.
Megan
Swann, who at the age of 28 also became the youngest person
to lead the society, told the BBC it "means so much
to be able to make history".
The
organisation was founded in 1905 to promote and advance
magic.
Ms
Swan said she hoped her appointment would lead more women
and young girls to practise the art.
The
Magic Circle has some 1,500 members, including Dynamo, David
Copperfield, the Prince of Wales and Sooty, all of whom
had to prove their skill as magicians in order to join.
However,
women have only been allowed to join in the past 30 years
and just 5% of its members are female.
Ms
Swann said it was "just amazing" to be the president
of an organisation "which I've grown up with and I
absolutely love".
"To
be able to make history during the process is just the icing
on the cake," she added.
The
28-year-old, from Eltham in south-east London, said it all
started when she was given a magic set at the age of five,
but "the turning point was joining the Young Magicians
Club" when she was 10.
She
said her favoured style was "environmental magic"
where she uses her skills to "tell people about environmental
issues and more importantly what we can do to help".
Asked
what she hoped to see happen during her presidency, the
magician said she would "love to see more women and
young girls getting into magic... in the magic community
as a whole, not just the Magic Circle".
She
also wanted to see the return of public performances as
many magicians had resorted to carrying out virtual shows
online during the pandemic.
"There's
nothing compared to a live audience in my opinion, nothing
like being on stage," she said.

8. Broken wand - Allan Slaight
--------------------------------------------
Allan
Slaight (1931-2021)
By
Magicana Staff
September 20, 2021
On September 19, 2021, John Allan Slaight passed away peacefully,
aged 90, at his home in Toronto. Born on July 19, 1931 in
Galt, Ontario to John Edgar and Eileen Slaight, Allan soon
made his mark, first, at 8 as a magician, and then, at 17
as a broadcaster, hosting a late night jazz program Spins
and Needles in his new hometown of Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan.
At
19, he married Ada Mitchell, moved to Edmonton, started
a family, and jockeyed between local radio stations before
becoming the News Director at CHED in 1953. In 1958, he
relocated to Toronto and became the Program Director of
CHUM, the fledgling rock and roll radio station. Thanks
to Allan's endless energy, intuitive grasp of programming,
and extraordinary ability to inspire, CHUM soon set the
standard for rock and roll radio in Canada, and abroad.
In
1966, Allan left CHUM to pursue his own endeavours. And
the hits kept coming: rescuing Radio Caroline, the pirate
radio station serving the U.K., pulling Global Television
back from the brink of bankruptcy, creating Q-107 in Toronto,
and then acquiring Standard Broadcasting and transforming
it into the largest privately-owned network of radio stations
in Canada. His indefatigable energy and street smarts also
helped shepherd the Toronto Raptors to Toronto. Allan eventually
took control of the franchise and the building of the Air
Canada Centre before turning ownership over to new stewards.
For
Allan, people were always more important than profits. He
demonstrated this time and time again through his community
and philanthropic efforts. Hundreds of organizations-particularly
those within healthcare, community services and the arts-
benefited not just from his financial contributions, but
also from his leadership, creativity, timeliness, and willingness
to make his friends and associates their friends and associates.
His philanthropic initiatives will percolate across Canada
for years to come through The Slaight Family Foundation
and La Fondation Emmanuelle Gattuso.
While
Allan maintained a lifelong love for the conjuring arts,
writing one of the most celebrated texts in the history
of the literature, his greatest feat was giving people,
regardless of their field of endeavour, the confidence and
support that they, too, could perform the impossible.
The recipient of, among other awards of distinction, a Juno,
an Honorary Degree from Ryerson University, a Star on the
Canadian Walk of Fame, and the Order of Canada, Allan is
survived by his children Gary, Greg and Marie (and their
respective partners); five grandchildren (and their partners),
and several great-grandchildren; and his brother, Brian
(and his wife, Annabel).
Allan
is also survived by the love of his life these past thirty-five
years, his wife, Emmanuelle Gattuso. Together they were
one, with a passion for life, for each other, and for helping
others.
In lieu of flowers, please direct time, energy and, if possible,
resources to a charity near to you.

9. Always On My Mind - John Carey #135

This
effect came about simply from the deck I like using these
days, the Penguin Magic marked deck. It comes with a double
backed gaffed card and I thought that I might as well use
this gaff. Here is a strong and simple mystery card presentation.
Place
the double backer inside your right pocket ahead of time.
Perform a few effects and then hand the deck out for shuffling.
"Before
I came here today I removed a card from that deck. I don't
even know what it is. It's a mystery card."
The
right hand removes the double backer and sticks it to your
forehead, which will get a smile or inquisitive stare. Take
back the deck and spread for a free selection, which the
marks will tell you the identity of.
Let's
say here it's the Seven of Diamonds. Hand a marker to your
helper and request that they sign their card on the face
as you look away. Turn back around and have the card returned
and secretly control it to the top using your favorite method.
Secure a pinky break beneath the signed
card.
"Now
let's try something that some call telepathy, others call
mind reading and some people state simply cannot be done.
Mentally project your card to me and keep saying it over
and over in your head, like Seven of Diamonds, Seven of
Diamonds, Seven of Diamonds, yes?!" Let your helper
respond and confirm you're correct. "It's as if your
thoughts were always on my mind!" The right hand removes
the double backer from your forehead and places it on top
of the deck. As an intransit action extend your right hand
palm-up and ask your spectator to extend a palm-up hand.
Come back to the deck and execute a double turnover revealing
their signed card. Hand it to them and your mystery is successfully
concluded. Put the deck away and go to the bar for a well-deserved
beer.

10. News From The Academy Of Illusions

Message by Jay Scott Berry (Australia)
I'm
happy to report another banner week at the Academy: A dozen
Private Training Sessions, 4 Private Zoom Shows, 2 ZoomStorming
Group Sessions plus the 3rd episodes of GenoMania and the
Darkstone Dossiers Mini-Series. To top it off, on Tuesday,
we premiered another new show, Illuminations.
The
intensive training ZoomStorming Sessions have already helped
magicians around the globe up their sleight-of-hand game.
When asked if we should continue them, the response was
enthusiastic and unanimous! So, Sessions 5 - 8 are on the
Calendar for Saturdays in October. I'll run each 90 minute
Class twice, at 3pm SYD Time and again at 3pm NY time. More
details are on The Art of Wonder FB Page.
Geno
DeVille pulled out all the stops for the 3rd Episode in
his Series. This one was Muggle Friendly, so Streamed live
to the Academy FB Page. He began by announcing an Online
Magic Competition for original effects and routines. He
then played one of his original performance clips, as an
example. It was an ingeniously simple, highly deceptive
effect with coloured beads and a cup. We talked at length
about my new Digital Downloads, to be released next month.
I then performed part of one new routine, as a teaser. To
top it off, Geno added 2 new segments, one on Bar Bets and
the other for stories from the road.
Professor
Emeritus, Anthony Darkstone, put the icing on the cake with
the third in his Mentoring Mini-Series. His Guests were
Grandmaster John O'Riordan and Academy Professor, Arthur
Tivoli. From amazing performances, intelligent discussion
and practical advice, it was a magical banquet, fit for
a king! As always, you can view the full recording, free-of-charge,
on the Academy FB Page.
For
the full moon Equinox, we launched Illuminations, starring
Romany, Eva May, Roger Nicot and myself. The theme for this
roundtable discussion was "The Magic Mindset".
From Science to Mysticism and Physics to Metaphysics, we
took the road less travelled, exploring what it takes to
attain, and maintain, Peak Performance, in Magic and Life.
Coming
up on Sunday is our first Excelsior Gala Show. I will join
Academy Director Tommillusions, with Stars, Rod Chow, Eric
Stevens, Austin Moody, Joel Howlett and Ethan Sutton, for
what promises to be a sensational show of visual wizardry
and sophisticated sorcery.
Looking
ahead, I'm very excited to announce that the first Mystic
Cabaret will air on October 15th. With Arthur Tivoli as
Emcee, the show will feature Magic, Music and Variety acts,
all with a Mystical Flair. You will find more info on all
of the Academy activities at: www.facebook.com/AcademyofIllusions

11. No Stone Unturned - Paul Stone - Article #30
--------------------------------------------
Las
Vegas has always been known as the magic capital of the
world, and after a period of time when it had lost a little
of its sparkle, I'm pleased to report that it once again
reigns supreme!
Magicians
have won three out of the last five America's Got Talent
series; Mat Franco has his own show at the LINQ, Shin Lim
at the Mirage and just this week Dustin Tavella was crowned
the winner for 2021, and he will be the new headline star
at the Luxor. Each of them very different, and each with
their own unique performing style.
So,
when you add into the mix the legend that is David Copperfield
at the MGM Grand, Criss Angel at the Planet Hollywood, Xavier
Mortimer and Banacek at the Stratosphere, James Dimmare
at the Mint in downtown Las Vegas, and Mac King at the Excalibur,
not forgetting Jason Byrne in 'V' the Ultimate Variety Show
and Nathan Burton both also at the Planet Hollywood, you'll
quickly understand why magic is very much to the forefront
here in Las Vegas!
Over
the next few weeks, I'll talk in more detail about each
of these top magicians, but this week I wanted to concentrate
on the latest addition to the Vegas magic scene, Dustin
Tavella.
I
have to confess that until recently I had never heard of
him. As I've mentioned before in previous Magic New Zealand
ezine articles, I'm not a massive fan of AGT, and I only
watch it sporadically, or when someone whose opinion I value
recommends that I take a look.
In
this case it was Lynette Chappell, Siegfried & Roy's
leading lady and 'Evil Queen', who suggested I check out
Dustin Tavella. Lynette has seen a lot of magic, and like
me, it takes something special for her to be impressed.
So, I did check it out, and boy, was Lynette right!
Everything
about Dustin screams 'Star Quality'. His look is very 'now'
and yet smart, his delivery is exceptional, and he has a
likeability that makes audiences warm to him instantly.
His
magic is clever and really strong, and he predominantly
uses small props that play big. But for me, his big secret
is that he is a story teller. All his routines are built
around very relatable story lines that appeal to young and
old alike.
I'm
really excited about his new upcoming show at the Luxor.
In my opinion, Dustin Tavella has that 'je ne sais quoi',
that indefinable ingredient, that sets him apart. I predict
that he will become a huge star.

Josh
Jay Lecture
This
November, Joshua Jay will be crisscrossing the country in
a two-month book tour for the
public to promote the release of his anticipated book of
essays How Magicians Think. His
publisher is sending him to just a dozen cities to do television,
radio, shows, and signings in
support of this title. Joshua has arranged for a special
lecture appearance on his night off in Philadelphia at the
Smoke & Mirrors Magic Theater.
This
is a rare chance to see one of magic's busiest and most
exciting performers. Joshua Jay is an internationally recognized
talent. He is a former First Place Winner at the World Magic
Seminar and was the 2020 Society of American Magicians Magician
of the Year. He has won the Creativity Prize at FISM, and
fooled Penn & Teller on Fool Us. Joshua has appeared
on The
Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon and The Late Show with James
Corden. He has created two of the best-selling tricks in
magic over the last decade: "Balance" and "Inferno,"
and he co-owns Vanishing Inc. Magic, one of the largest
and most prolific companies in magic. Joshua Jay is also
known as one of our industry's leading lecturers. He is
an exceptional teacher, and in his lecture he mixes close-up
and parlor, easy and difficult, card and non-card magic.
In his new lecture lineup, you will see him perform the
following:
The
Wager: a brand new, unpublished effect using four coins
and a hundred-dollar bill. Visual, smart, and extremely
deceptive.
Reverse
Logic: The ultimate parlor opener. A spectator shuffled
deck goes back into new deck order, a watch appears back
on your wrist, and you travel back in time.
Any
Card at Any Page Number: One of Josh's signature effects...you've
never seen this classic of magic with an ending quite like
this.
The
Card Dazzler: This is a color-changing deck where the cards
change in the spectator's hands...and then every card in
the pack turns clear.
Cornered
Complete: Make a borrowed bill appear in a spectator's wallet.
You read that right. A spectator's wallet.
Plus,
many more routines from Josh's original repertoire and product
line.
Peace,
Danny

13. The Orchante Saga - Beginnings
-------------------------------------
Written by the late Tommy Orchard (The Amazing Orchante)
Fiji
Tuesday morning 8.30am. We go to Don Laine's office, where
he verified this, and accused Eric of causing embarrassment
to the company by contravening immigration laws. So we trotted
down to immigration headquarters which looked like an old
tumbledown shack. There we saw a Mr Kaleil, who, although
not exactly welcoming, was never the less grudgingly pleasant.
He told Tom to buy an application form for a work permit,
fill it in, get two photos taken, and come back with $10.
We went back to the hotel, filled in a six-page form, with
Steve's help, got the photos
taken, and took the form back to Kalil, who was slightly
less unbending. He said it took about three weeks to process,
with a 50-50 chance, but when Tom, laying it on rather thick,
told him
that it was costing us a small fortune in accommodation
etc he said he would rush it through in two weeks. With
this we had to be content.
We
then headed off to the Fiji visitors' Bureau to see Paddy
Doyle, whose name had been given by Eric. Paddy was wrapt,
and assured Tom he could get him all the work he needed
if the permit was granted. He called in his second in charge
Steve Yagona, who phoned Kaleil, talk away in Fijian, then
told Tom that we should know next week one way or the other,
and that he thought our chances were very good. By this
time and it was 4:30pm so we had a cold, solid steak at
a snack bar, which was at least cheaper than at the Southern
Cross, then went back to the hotel.
This
morning (Wednesday 21st) and we paid our $50 bill at the
southern Cross Hotel and caught the coach back to Paradise
Point. This trip, although not so dusty, and with a better
driver (the
Monday driver scraped the side of an oncoming car) took
longer, as an hour from Paradise Point, the road was blocked
by a truck which had slipped off the road, while transporting
a 16 ton
bulldozer on the back. There were cars, trucks, buses, people
watching, people photographing, people advising, and even
a man up a telephone pole phoning Suva. After an hour's
wait, our
busload came back, quite shaken. An Indian had got up onto
the tractor to try and get it off the truck, but as he was
driving it backwards, it had rolled over down the bank,
with him still on it. Luckily, he managed to jump clear
and run around it as it was still rolling down the hillside.
The
roads in Fiji are atrocious! There are no speed restrictions,
except those imposed by the road conditions, and these are
severe. They are unsealed, dusty as hell, and wickedly slippery
and muddy when wet! The 65-mile trip from Suva to the Paradise
Point Resort takes about 3 - 3½ hours in the bus.
We
arrived back at the Paradise Point Resort at 2 p m. to find
that Eric had written a letter resignation to the company,
and had threatened Don Laine with it. Eric showed us the
letter he
received this morning from Laine - again blasting him re
the show, and ordering him to charge us for our accommodation
etc, less 50 per cent at the most, but on being confronted
by Eric's resignation he said to disregard his letter. So
for the moment, we're in 'Shit Street' without a paddle,
or whatever else you might need in the aforementioned street.
Bad news, Eric's mother, who has been ill for a few weeks,
died last night, so Tom is out helping Eric to get boozed.
Two
days later; more bad news! I can't believe it - the bloody
permit has been refused! The reason given was that, although
nobody in Fiji actually ate fire, or swallowed swords, performed
magic etc., there might be someone wanting to do it in the
future, and Tom might be putting him out of a job. Not even
the Company's Head Office or various Hotel Managers, etc.,
could influence the decision!
So
now you have the full and complete story regarding that
line 'Bloody Officious Indians'! As you may well understand,
I was not a very happy laddie and why I cheered loudly when
years later, Fijians finally rebelled, and took over their
own country! It's a bit like Australia deciding to govern
New Zealand. Ha!
We
now had to make a decision. We could return to New Zealand,
or try our luck in Australia. I remembered that my father
had a friend, Bill Godfrey, who worked as a Security Guard
at the
Sydney Airport. I got hold of his phone number, and gave
him a call, explained our dilemma, and asked what he thought
of us coming to Australia. Bill said, "When can you
get here - and don't worry about a bed - we've got one waiting
for you"! Well, what do you know - the Orchanté
luck strikes again! It always does! We cashed in our return
tickets, and bought tickets to Sydney.
Look
Out Australia, Here We Come!
