5. The Magic Circle Appoints Its Youngest, And First Female,
President
--------------------------------------------
BBC
News
The
Magic Circle appoints its youngest, and first female, president
Times
have changed in the magic industry. Tricks aren't just about
sawing people in half these days - they also teach people
about climate change.
It's
different at the top too - a 28-year-old woman has been
elected president of The Magic Circle.
It's
the first time a woman has held the title in its 116 year
history.
Megan
Swann is now the president of the organisation, founded
in 1905, for British magicians.
She's
also its youngest.
'Magic
has definitely changed'
The
Magician's Circle is built on one main rule that its members
can never reveal the secrets of their tricks - and until
1991, one of its other rules was that women couldn't even
join, let alone be president.
But
Megan believes its sexist reputation is starting to change.
"I
think many people do still have this slightly outdated image
of the male magician in top hat and tails and pulling rabbits
out of the hat," she tells Radio 1 Newsbeat.
"Magic
has definitely changed. There are some amazing magicians
out there of all different ages, and races and genders.
Magic
tricks and climate change
She
says that celebrity tricksters such as David Blaine and
Dynamo have made magic cool again.
But
Megan doesn't perform like these A-listers, she uses her
skills to share a message about climate change, in what
she describes as "environmental magic".
"I
generally teach people about environmental issues and how
we can help through magic tricks," she says.
"So
I do things on climate change, waste, ocean pollution and
deforestation, all through magic."
"It's
a really good communication tool and a really good way of
engaging people. It can be quite a depressing topic otherwise."
Like
every industry - especially the performing arts - the past
18 months have been a struggle for magicians, who've been
unable to work because of the coronavirus pandemic.
Megan
says it's a "major challenge" to get back to "some
kind of normality" and for her, she's getting back
to it with a new title of - what is essentially - the Dumbledore
of British magicians.
"It's
such an amazing honour, I can't quite believe that I'm the
person that has a magic circle," Megan adds.
"And
to have made history in the process as well. It's just it's
even better. It's the icing on the cake."

9. Triplexia - John Carey #136
-------------------------------------------
Message by John Carey (UK)
http://www.johncareymagic.co.uk/
Triplexia
is my fix on the classical triple prediction premise, using
the time honored Equivoque to drive the method engine. Properly
understood and used sparingly verbal control, as Max Maven
has commented, can be most deceptive and profound. It's
all about being confident, relaxed and zero hesitation when
responding to your participants decisions. Go and grab two
dice - one red and one white, a Seven of Diamonds and Jack
of Clubs, silver and copper coins and three business cards
or scraps of paper and let's have some fun.
On
the back of one of the business cards write "Silver".
On another write "Seven of Diamonds" and finally
on the remaining card write "White". Set these
cards predictions side down in silver,
Seven of Diamonds, white order from the top down. Bring
out the predictions and set them down sight unseen to one
side. I don't actually refer to them as anything in particular.
I just do it casually. Take out your props and set them
down in pairs from left to right in coins, cards, dice order.
"Peter,
a selection of items related to the gambling world: cards,
money and dice. But fear not, nothing will be won or lost
this evening! Firstly, please focus on the two coins. One
is silver, the other copper, but we don't need them both,
so please hand me either one." So now we start the
equivocation process. I extend my left hand and my participant
hands me either coin. Note I do NOT say pick, choose or
select. These words should be avoided. If Peter hands me
the silver coin I simply place it in front of him and put
the other coin aside out of play. Then I take the top business
card and place it with the silver coin. If however he hands
me the copper coin I just calmly set it aside and ask him
to pick up the coin he decided to keep and place it in front
of himself. Then I place the business card with it.
For phase two I need to force the Seven of Diamonds, but
I can't use the same Equivoque again. So this time I use
a different gambit: "Peter, two playing cards, one
red and one black. I'm going to take one of those cards
out. Shall I take out the red card or the black card?"
The phrase "take out" is beautiful because it
can mean take out to use or to remove. If he says take out
the red card I place it in front of him and then set the
next business card down with it. If he says take out the
black card I do just that and discard it as I say "fine,
it's gone." Then I set the red card and the business
card in front of my helper.
"Finally
Peter, two dice, sometimes known as The Devil's bones! Would
you pick up one in each hand? I will snap my fingers and
I want you to drop either dice." Once again we will
use a different Equivoque strategy for this final phase.
If he drops the white dice I pick it up and set it in front
of him as in the two previous phases and then place the
final business card with it. But if he drops the red dice
I calmly ask him to set the white dice he decided to keep
onto the table and the business card is set down next to
it. The red dice is discarded.
"Does
anyone here tonight believe it's possible to actually predict
the future? Well earlier today I had three thoughts and
wrote them down on each of my business cards. Peter, you
made all the decisions and had complete free will. In front
of you are a silver coin, the Seven of Diamonds
and a white dice. Please turn over each prediction and read
them out aloud. Impossible!"
So
all I've done here essentially is to take three different
one-from two- items Equivoque strategies and wrapped a neat
parcel around them. Rehearse the steps thoroughly and you
will have a nice solid and deceptive routine that you can
perform regularly. Of course, you can use
any everyday items if you wish.
Have
fun!

10. News From The Academy Of Illusions
--------------------------------------------
Message by Jay Scott Berry (Australia)
Six
weeks ago, we set out with clear intent to use the latest
technologies to present, and teach, the most Ancient of
Arts. Our whirlwind first month has been proof of concept,
with Virtual Shows, Lectures, Workshops, Interviews and
Private Sessions; all culminating with the Excelsior Gala.
Sunday's 90 minute show streamed from Zoom to Facebook,
receiving accolades and rave reviews for setting a new standard
in webcasting wizardry.
The
international cast presented 12 impeccable routines, from
Close-up to Stage, from Classic to Original. Academy Director
Tommillusions Emceed the show from his Studio in Singapore,
with high energy and enthusiasm. First up, from Texas, was
Magic's brightest new star, Austin Moody, who premiered
an amazing Wand and Ball routine along with his signature
Coins and Coasters. Next, from Missouri, was newcomer Ethan
Sutton, who kept up the pace with his smooth, creative versions
of Coins Across and Ambitious Card. Between interviews with
the Artists, Tomm then presented his unique version of my
classic Ring and Ribbon Routine.
Next,
from Spokane Washington, was Master Magician Eric Stevens,
who has starred in no less than six of my Festivals! For
the gala, his peerless, sleight-of-hand with Cards and Coins
was matched by his precision handling of the Prism Paddle.
From way Down Under, in Newcastle, Australia, Joel Howlett
answered by delivering a flawless Multiplying Ball Routine,
followed by a gorgeous Dove Act that, I reckon, would have
even made Channing Smile.
The
baton was then passed to me, so I presented my new Silk
and Ring Routine, "Circularity". Closing the show,
with style and class, from Vancouver, was FISM Contender
and S.A.M. President-Elect, Rod Chow. His new Astrology
Act is truly a wonder to behold.
You
can watch the replay of the Gala, free-of-charge, on the
Academy FB Page: www.Facebook.com/AcademyofIllusions
Stay
tuned as there's more to conjure in October, including a
new weekly Series, Illusioneering, which will stream to
The Art of Wonder Group, on Tuesday the 5th. We're also
in full production for the premiere of The Mystic Cabaret,
on the 15th. Eight more Zoom Storming Sessions will take
place on Saturdays, along with numerous Private Sessions.
Finally, we'll be releasing 10 new Digital Downloads leading
up to the Holidays, exclusively through DeVille Magic. More
details can be found on the FB Page and Website...Where
Wonders Never Cease.

11. No Stone Unturned - Paul Stone - Article #31
--------------------------------------------
Message by Paul Stone (US)
Anyone
who knows me well is aware that I am a huge fan of Variety
and Speciality performers. Theatres were built for these
kind of shows.
There
was a time, 35-40 years ago when most of the shows on the
Las Vegas Strip boasted at least a couple of top class Variety
acts.
Sadly,
almost all of those shows are gone, but there is still one
that features a number of excellent 'Spec' acts, and it
is 'V,' The Ultimate Variety Show, at the Planet Hollywood
Hotel & Casino. It has been running for over twenty
years and still manages to play to full houses on most nights.
I
mention the 'V' Show because I took a friend to see it last
weekend. It was the first 'live' show on the Strip that
I had seen in nearly two years.
I
first went to see this show probably twenty years ago. The
reason for doing so at the time was because the show's Host
was Jeff Hobson, who was a good friend and stellar performer.
In 'V', the Host holds the show together, and Jeff did just
that.
When
Jeff moved on to produce and perform on the Norwegian Epic
cruise ship, and then to Host the Illusionists touring show,
he was replaced by the inimitable juggler and comedian,
Wally Eastwood.
I
have waxed lyrically about Wally many times in my articles,
but his skill set is amazing, and his comedic talent and
timing is wonderful, and his energy is incredible. Wally
has performed over 30,000 shows on the Las Vegas Strip!
When
I first saw the 'V' Show, one of the regular performers
was Jason Byrne, a young Canadian Dove Act. Jason has largely
remained under the radar, even though for a few years he
also produced his own full illusion Show for a couple of
major cruise lines.
I
booked Jason back in 2008 to appear in both the Gala Show
at the IBM British Ring Convention in Eastbourne and then
at the London Palladium Theatre for the Tribute to Siegfried
& Roy, and he did a great job.
Jason
is now comfortably ensconced back in the 'V' Show and like
a good wine, he has matured well. As he's got a little older,
he's adapted his onstage persona to suit, and his dove work
is quite exceptional.
Also
in the 'V' Show is another comedy Spec Act, Russ Merlin,
who himself has a background in magic, although his act
in this show doesn't include a single trick. I'm not going
to spoil it by trying to describe it.
At
first glance it might appear to be a simple concept. It
reminds me a little of watching Mac King, in that it all
looks so easy, whilst in fact it is anything but, and has
taken years for Russ to perfect.
Suffice
it to say he has the whole audience rocking and it is the
act that most people talk about when they leave the theatre.
All
the above performers are fantastic pro's, and their acts
are honed to perfection, the result of working literally
thousands of shows.
There
is no substitute for experience, and the only way a performer
gains that experience is by getting out there and working!
Particularly
in today's uncertain times where work opportunities are
patchy at best, there are very few performers who can be
too picky, and within reason they have to accept whatever
work is offered to them.
One
of England's finest magicians, and a Past President of the
Magic Circle in London, Alan Shaxon, was a great example
of this. He was a fine all round magician.
By
that, I mean that he was able to perform his act in theatres,
clubs, and in cabaret, and he was also an excellent close-up
magician and an accomplished Children's entertainer as well!
Although
Alan performed regularly at prestigious corporate and private
party events, if he wasn't booked, and he was offered a
kids show, he would do it without hesitation. That, to me,
is the epitome of a true pro!

12. European Institute For Magic History
--------------------------------------------
Message by Magischer Klub Wien and Magic Christian (Vienna)
Dear
friends in magic, dear magic historians, dear magic collectors,
The Magischer Klub Wien and Magic Christian are proud to
announce the foundation of the "European Institute
for Magic History". The founding ceremony will take
place Saturday October 2nd in Vienna. Whoever in the magic
community would like to take part in this event is welcome.
More information will be sent to you then.
The
reason, we establish this Institute will be the connections
with universities, libraries and public institutions more
tightly. Beside the effort to improve the acceptance of
"Entertaining Magic" as a form of art like Music,
Singing and Acting in the public will be one of the basic
goals. We have got the support of FISM already and we hope
in the future there will be support by the public media
as well. Also there will be new publications about the Art
and History of magic.

13. The Orchante Saga - Beginnings
-------------------------------------
Written by the late Tommy Orchard (The Amazing Orchante)
The
Amazing 'Orchanté' Saga - Page 1
'The
Australian Years'
G' Day, Australia!
What
a contrast! Flying over New Zealand, you are captivated
by a panoramic view of the cool, velvety green of the countryside
below. Looking out of the windows of the aeroplane as we
flew
over the city of Sydney heading for Kingsford Smith International
airport, we were greeted with millions of sizzling red roofs,
and a myriad of various shaped and sized sparkling blue
patches -
swimming pools that appeared to be in every other backyard.
We knew Australia was a hot country and from our viewpoint
at two thousand feet up, it sure as hell looked like it;
Phew!
Sunday
1st August 1976. We, like many other New Zealand entertainers
before us, have landed on Australian soil. Ten years earlier,
two good mates had practically begged me to leave New
Zealand for Australia with them. One was (the late) Peter
Taylor, juggler and acrobat (see pages 39 to 43 - The N.Z.
Years) the other was top kiwi/Italian singer Robert Gennari.
Mind you, if I'd
gone with them, I wouldn't have met my first wife Sharon,
and my two sons Jason and Darin, wouldn't have happened;
neither would I have met Veronica, my wife of 27 years (we
have been 'an item' for 32 years). The 'Master Planner',
sure does have a strange way of doing things!
Bill
Godfrey was there to meet us in the Customs hall and being
a security officer for the airport, we whizzed through customs
etc, picked up our luggage and equipment in no time at all,
and were soon on our way to Bill's home. It's the old story
- it's not what you know, it's who you know. What a relief
- I was still seething over our treatment at the Nadi Intl.
airport in Fiji,
apart from the problems we'd had with the 'officious ones'
in Suva, in to regards our non-existent work permit.
My
God, the traffic! Well let's face it - the largest city
I had been in at that point in time was Auckland, New Zealand,
my birthplace. I don't know about now, but back in 1976
the entire
population of New Zealand (not counting the sheep) was equivalent
to that of Sydney - around 3 million. As far as I was concerned,
Sydney-ites in cars were total maniacs and it was every
man for himself - at breakneck speed. Up to then, my driving
experience had been ambling along the length and breadth
of New Zealand (albeit on some pretty hair-raising roads),
and the laid-back
South Pacific Islands.
How
frightful was the Sydney traffic to me? Let me put it this
way. When we bought our first car (in Australia) a few weeks
later, I didn't have the nerve to drive it from the car
sales yard to home; I had to ask Bill to drive it! From
there on, I drove it around the back streets of Fairfield,
a suburb west of Sydney central where Bill and his family
lived, until I got used to the fast paced Sydney drivers.
That probably explains why I became a 'fast' driver myself,
it was self-defence; I learnt to out-drive the 'Nutters'
for my own safety, and to get away from them. The worst
drivers I've had the misfortune to encounter are here, in
London, England, but that is another story.
We
stayed with Bill, his wife Betty and children for two weeks,
while we looked for a place of our own, and then discovered
that their neighbour had a garage that had been converted
into a flat, and that it had become available; perfect!
In
the meantime Bill (sadly, he died many years ago), a most
engaging, upfront character, with an enormous personality
to match, was a member of just about every RSL (Returned
Services
League) club for miles around, as well as various football
clubs, and he knew all Secretary Managers at every one of
them! He dragged us around to most of them - introducing
us to anybody who mattered, or didn't! I damn near wore
my fingers to the bone doing close-up magic, and getting
'very happy' on Australian lager most of the time in the
process.
In
Sydney, these clubs, which number in the thousands, were
the 'bread and butter' venues for the equally thousands
of fulltime professional entertainers - singers, dancers,
comedians, speciality acts, you name it; artistes from all
over the world who worked in them. Sydney was rated as second
only to Las Vegas for volume of work within one city, and
Sydney had a hell of a lot more venues to work in than Vegas
did. It was said that you could work a different club every
night of the week in N.S.W. (State of New South Wales) for
ten years without going to the same one twice. Maybe a slight
exaggeration, but not much!
