2. Vanish Magic Magazine No. #103
--------------------------------------------
Message by Paul Romhany - Editor Vanish Magazine

Double Feature with February Vanish Magic Magazine is out now - an incredible double feature again featuring Wojtek Rotowski and the other cover is Solange Kardinaly.

The cover article of Wojtek Rotowski is a dual piece written over the course of several years by Thomas L. Swieciak .The two articles, written under different circumstances from the perspective of its subject, illusionist Wojtek Rotowski, offer a unique glimpse into how one small part of the world of magic in Eastern Europe, specifically Poland, has been affected by the Ukraine War.

Our other cover is about Solange Kardinaly who was born into a multi-generational circus family. The Portuguese magician explained, "honestly, I don't remember how or when I started. As far as I can remember, my first memories as a little girl, I've always been in the magic world. I was born into a family and legacy of circus performers. I'm the third member in my family to perform magic professionally. For me it is more than a passion, it's always been my life".

Nick Lewin shares his yearly Valentine Awards.

4. Britain's Got Talent Host Simon Cowell Set On Fire
---------------------------------------------
Article forwarded by Andy Wonder (New Zealand)

NZ Herald

Britain's Got Talent host Simon Cowell set on fire in terrifying audition.

A recent audition for Britain's Got Talent took a terrifying turn when judge Simon Cowell was reportedly set on fire.

The Mirror has reported the 63-year-old TV judge was asked to go on stage as part of one contestant's audition when the shocking moment occurred.

Cowell reportedly went on stage upon request when the contestant - a magician - placed a hood over the TV personality's head and proceeded to pour lighter fluid over the hood.

Cowell, blissfully unaware of what was being poured over his head stayed still while the magician continued to place a box over Cowell's head before locking it, leaving only the front door open so the audience could see inside.

It was at this moment the unknown magician dropped a flame into the box, causing Cowell's head to be engulfed in flames leaving the audience and other judges in complete shock.

Expressing their shock, an audience member shared with the Mirror how onlookers reacted to the situation claiming the audience "screamed" and jumped out of their seats.

When satisfied with the reaction, the magician removed the box and the hood revealing an injury-free Cowell.

After walking back to his seat, Cowell told the audience, "I could feel liquid being poured on me but I had no idea it was lighter fluid!"

While one of his co-judges Alesha Dixon explained: "Simon, he set your entire head on fire! It was very scary, you are a very brave man to do that. It made me realise how much we care about you, I was ready to come up there and rescue you."

Meanwhile, the source added, "The flames were put out and Simon got up looking a bit shell-shocked while the rest of the judges breathed a sigh of relief as he returned to the panel."

The shocking moment occurred during the show's audition process and will likely make it into the next season when it goes to air, however that has not been confirmed.

6. Magic Museum Bellachini - Episode 17
---------------------------------------------
Message by Wittus Witt (Germany)

Dear friends and colleagues, today I can report on a few very special exhibits that someone even gave me as a gift. Ever since I have had the museum, I have been getting requests again and again to see if I can use one or the other item. A few weeks ago, for example, I was offered booklets describing magic tricks under the name Bellachini. It is a series of 6 booklets, but only 3 were known and it was assumed that there were no more, although they were announced in the first booklet. So now we know that there are 6 issues in total after all.

But even more exciting was a call from a fellow magician asking me if I could use things from Kalanag for my museum. What a question! So contact was made and a friendly gentleman from Stuttgart got in touch. He was the last tenant of the restaurant "Erdbeer", where Kalanag was a frequent visitor. Kalanag had also helped with money for a renovation of the restaurant.

Anyway: Mr. Schiemann, the tenant's name, had three original Kalanag objects: a candle holder with engraving, which Kalanag received from his co-workers at the film in 1939; the original magic wand with the initials "HS" for Helmut Schreiber (Kalanag's civil name) and ... it's unbelievable ... the Original jug Kalanag used for the feat "Water from India".

All three pieces will soon be on display at the Bellachini Museum. Then there will also be pictures.

Finally: the homepage of the museum now also has all pages with English text.

7. No Stone Unturned - Paul Stone - Article #93

Message by Paul Stone (US)

It would be wrong not to start my article this week without mentioning the dreadful flooding in Alan Watson's home city, Auckland. New Zealand's capital city suffered one month's rainfall in one day, and the scenes of houses and roads being swept away were unbelievable. Hopefully Alan and his family were not affected.

Living in USA, and especially here in Las Vegas, we've often heard of the British Invasion, referring of course to the music industry.

At the upcoming Blackpool Magic Convention, there is definitely an American invasion, or to be more accurate a Vegas invasion! There will be several top performers making their way across the pond to appear.

I've already mentioned in the last couple of weeks that Mike Hammer will be headlining with his one-man show direct from the 4 Queens Hotel & Casino in downtown Las Vegas.

He will be joined by another of my favorite performers, Kevin James, who is always great to watch. Kevin must be the most travelled magician on the planet, having worked in virtually every country known to man!

Then there's Xavier Mortimer. Originally from Paris, where I first saw him perform in a small underground club. Xavier came to Vegas having successfully auditioned for a role in the Michael Jackson ONE , Cirque du Soleil Show, at the Mandalay Bay Hotel & Casino on the Las Vegas Strip.

When he first arrived in Las Vegas, I helped Xavier find accommodation and a car, and booked him for a few of my 'World Stars of Magic' Shows. He was a real talent even then, and he always said that one day he'd have his own show in town.

That came true for him with his one-man show at the Planet Hollywood Hotel & Casino, and then more recently at the Stratosphere. Xavier is a very original performer and even writes his own music too!

A name that British magicians might not have heard too much of is Greg Gleason. Greg has been a very successful illusionist here in USA for many years, on the cruise ships, in shows on the Vegas Strip, and he has also appeared on numerous occasions on Gay Blackstone's 'Masters of Illusion' TV Shows. Greg is also a very accomplished close-up magician. If I'm not mistaken, it's his first time at any British Convention.

It's been unusually cold here in Las Vegas for the past few weeks, and it would be great if the weather was going to be warmer in Blackpool. I'm not holding my breath though, because I've experienced the cold wind blowing in from the North sea on too many occasions, but I can live in hope!

Sawing Someone in Half

"I hope you won't saw me in half!" That is a common reaction when a woman finds out that I am a magician. We think of it as a classic magic illusion, but I know several people who are older than that trick. (I avoided saying, "that old saw!")

According to the Guinness Book of World Records, the first magician to seemingly saw someone in half was British magician P. T. (Percy) Selbit, on January 17, 1921…barely more than 100 years ago.

There have been many versions of this effect in the past one hundred years. The one I use was built by my brother, Carter Cummins, and is a variation (we think it is an improvement) of the Jack Hughes Visible Sawing, jigsaw version.

The electric saw actually does saw through three wooden dowels placed along the path of the saw, and the stocks come apart after the effect is completed to show nothing tricky. I have Giant Band-Aid souvenirs, as well as a nice certificate for "not coming apart" after being sawed in half.
I have never sawed my wife or my daughter or my daughter-in-law or my granddaughter in half…but my younger granddaughter, "The Amazing Adele" has sawed ME in half several times.

One of my favorite ways to use the sawing illusion is for celebrity fundraisers, in which people vote with their dollars (It could be done with any currency.) to see which celebrity gets the "honor" of being sawed in half.

I have had the privilege of sawing hundreds of people in half during my career…but no rabbits (I don't want to "split hares").

Learn more details about this famous illusion by going to www.FantasticMagicCenter.com and clicking on the podcast episodes.

9. Oh Baby!!! - John Carey #185
-------------------------------------------
Message by John Carey (UK)
http://www.johncareymagic.co.uk/

The classic Baby gag has regained popularity in recent years since Bill Abbott released his extremely commercial Celebrity Smart Arse effect. I wanted to develop a simple and strong close-up version, with no throwing cards around and easy reset.

You will require 12 blank faced cards, each one having the name of a famous celebrity written on. I mix the list up with famous people from music, films and sport. My force celebrity is Elvis. Position this card second from top of the packet. You will also need to get a picture of a baby and Elvis printed on a double blank faced card. Place this card baby side outwards inside a small pay envelope.

Bring out the cards and envelope and hand the envelope to a spectator. Casually display the various celebrity names on the cards and have some fun with this. False shuffle the packet and hand it face-down to another spectator. "There are actually many ways to mix cards." Ask your helper to deal a few cards to the table. Then have them mix the remainder.

Continue by having them deal a few more cards onto the tabled pile, then mix the remainder and drop on top. This disarming little mix sets your force card to second from the bottom of the packet.

Direct your spectator to lose/burn the bottom card inside the packet and then have them take the top card and lose it too. Then ask them to take a peek at the bottom celebrity card and commit it to memory. Ask them shuffle the packet. Recap what has taken place. How they shuffled the
cards and are now just thinking of a famous celebrity. Focus attention on the other spectator and take the envelope from them. "How impressed would you be if had predicted the celebrity you are thinking of? Who are you thinking of? Ah Elvis!" Open the envelope and remove the card.
"Ladies and gentlemen, Elvis Presley aged 3 months!!!"

Allow the audience to laugh and groan and then turn the card over to reveal the King of Rock 'n Roll!

12. Broken Wand - Joe Stevens
---------------------------------------------
From Mark Stevens
Previously Written in Reserve

From Joe Stevens: In my life, I have attempted to engage adversity - this is an exercise in that discipline. I asked my son to post it at the appropriate time.

For my friends in the world of magic - I thank you for making my life truly magical. While my preference was "person-to-person" engagement, I relished the communications over the phone and digitally.

As the web matured, I missed traversing the globe looking for unique suppliers of apparatus. Looking back in time this included many visits searching for products in Europe visiting with dear friends Georges Proust and Christian Fechner (Paris), with Harold Voit (Germany) Domenico Dante (Italy), Japan with Ton Onosaka and Yuji Yamamoto (Japan), I can't leave out dear friends and US suppliers Mark Burger (Buma Jr) and George Robinson of Viking Magic. For those omitted it is only for brevity sake, I ask your forgiveness.

Equally, I relished meeting our many clients worldwide at trade shows here and abroad, and playing host at the 30-plus years of Desert Magic Seminars with my wife Martha. I can't begin to name names the letter would never end.

Regardless of where I traveled my fondest memories was being assured -- time again -- the art of magic is a fundamental phenomenon. It permeates all things - geography, ethnicity, communication, religion, social class, education etc.. I am a witness to the fact that it is more than just entertainment, it's more than art - its emotional communication.

I was at the shop every day until I absolutely wasn't physically capable despite great physical challenges it was what kept me moving. While Mark has been running things along with our incredible staff for a long time it was Stevens Magic that kept me alive much longer. My departing wish is two-fold, first that you will continue to be a part of our Stevens Magic family and finally I wish you the happiness that I have had with all my heart. - Joe Stevens
