Last weekend I drove from Las Vegas to Phoenix, Arizona to spend the weekend with my son Danny.

Whilst there I was able to visit an old friend, who has unfortunately had many health challenges after suffering a life threatening brain tumour around six years ago.

His name, which will be known by many people who read Magic New Zealand, is Bob Massey.
I first met Bob when I was living in Tempe, Arizona. The year was 1996, and I had just agreed a deal with Peter Reveen, who was Lance Burton's manager, to design and supply all the magic merchandise in Lance's magic shop, next to his impressive, brand new showroom at the Monte Carlo Hotel & Casino on the Strip in Las Vegas.

I also put together a great team to demonstrate and sell the tricks. They were a very talented group of performers that included Chappy Brazil, Charles Bach and Chris Dugdale, amongst others.

Bob Massey was at that time performing a few walkaround shows and kids shows in Phoenix, and I invited him to move to Las Vegas to join the team of demonstrators.

Bob not only joined the team but, over the next few years, became a close friend of Lance's, and also his videographer. One project he filmed was Lance's award winning movie, 'Billy Topit'.
After Lance retired, Bob joined Criss Angel in the same role, and in his spare time, persued his other passion, flying, and qualified as a pilot, and flew very regularly, right up until he became unwell.

Although life now is not easy for him, I found Bob in good spirits, and we had a great chat about the old days. It was a real pleasure to see him.

A couple of weeks ago, I paid tribute to Gloria Dea, the first magician to perform in Las Vegas, at the El Rancho Casino in 1941, and who sadly recently passed away at the age of 100 years.
This week I want to sing the praises of another remarkable lady, Mary Naylor Kodell, who just celebrated her 97th Birthday. Mary married legendary bird manipulator Jack Kodell in London in 1953, and enjoyed a long and happy marriage. She continues to live in Orlando, Florida, where they made their home.

Mary was a born performer, a singer and dancer, and starred in theatres across the UK from an early age, and her name became synonymous with the famous London Palladium Theatre where she appeared as leading lady in numerous shows both before and after World War 2, working alongside many of the biggest stars in the world of entertainment.

I'm delighted to report that Mary is still very much alive and is as bubbly a personality as ever. Her stories about her career are amazing, and she retains an enviable zest for life.

Many of her friends joined Mary to celebrate her Birthday, and a special shout out to Terry Ward, who has been a wonderful support and friend to Mary for several years.

If anyone can make it to their 100th Birthday, it's Mary! And that's one party I want to be at!

5. Alex Ramon On The Magic Word Podcast

Message by Scott Wells, M.I.M.C. with Gold Star

This week we complete the two week episode series featuring Alex Ramon. While recently in Lake Tahoe, Alex shared several stories about what he's been up to during the pandemic. His surprising "re-tooling" of his "25 in 25" tour (25 shows in 25 cities on 25 dates) ended up going online and forced him to create new material for every show.

Along the line, he created a super fan base and earned six figures along the way. In the first episode, Alex shares his secret which others can still follow. This also led to his creation of "Cold Shock" which was his death defying stunt of an underwater escape from the freezing waters of Lake Tahoe. His preparation for this icy adventure makes for some interesting if not incredible stories, all of which he shares with the listeners.

You can listen to both episodes wherever you get your podcasts, but for more information complete with photos and videos of our first episode, please visit: https://www.themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/747-alex-ramon-part-1 and to listen to the second episode where he talks about "Cold Shock", please visit: https://www.themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/748-alex-ramon-part-2https://www.themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/748-alex-ramon-part-2

This week we also open our latest contest for a copy of "Nick Trost's Subtle Card Creations - Volume 9" offered by Charlie Randall. All the entry details are on the website. But if you subscribed to the pod letter, then you would already know that. So why not subscribe to the pod letter today!

7. 2023 S.A.M. The Stars Of Tomorrow show
---------------------------------------------

The Stars of Tomorrow show is still accepting applications. The deadline to receive applications is April 15, 2023.

Stars of Tomorrow has been a beloved tradition at every S.A.M. National Convention for decades, and we're doing it again at the 2023 S.A.M. Convention, July 23-26, at Harrah's New Orleans Hotel & Casino in New Orleans, Louisiana.

We're looking to hire young close-up and stage magicians, plus an Emcee for the Stars of Tomorrow Stage Show.

Each selected act will receive a stipend, and each member of the act will get one year free membership in the Society of Young Magicians (SYM). SYM membership is not necessary to apply.

One adult accompanying each act will get a free convention registration. (Registration is free for all youths 17 and younger accompanied by an adult.)

Applicants must complete an application form and submit an audition video.

Here are a few details:

Close-up and stage audition videos must contain the act the magician plans to perform - effects, music, patter, costume and props. Videos don't have to come from actual performances or be professionally produced. Emcee videos should contain examples of emcee work, e.g., introductions, jokes, short magic effects, interaction with audience members.

Stage acts should be 5-10 minutes long and appropriate for stage. Close-up acts should be 6-8 minutes long and repeatable.

Audition videos may contain auditions for more than one category, but the performer will be selected for one category or act, only. No pyrotechnics may be used.

The Stars of Tomorrow experience is invaluable for young magicians. It gives them the opportunity to showcase their talent and experience the thrill of a major magic convention.
Direct questions to Producer Marlene Clark at StarsofTomorrow@samconvention.com.
Information and applications are available at www.magicsam.com/StarsofTomorrow.

9. Magic Museum Bellachini - Episode 25
---------------------------------------------
Message by Wittus Witt (Germany)

In addition to the exhibits shown in the Museum Bellachini, I naturally have a large number of other collectibles. In total, my collection includes about 4,000 volumes of magic literature, including about 2000 magic catalogs and supply lists. Furthermore, there are about 1,000 posters and graphics, apart from about 2,000 magic sets. So I will also show from time to time changing exhibitions in the Bellachini. But from this archive I can also equip exhibitions in other places.

For example, on May 13, the Münster City Museum will present a large exhibition in memory of Alexander Heimbürger until the end of September 2023. Heimbürger was a son of the city of Münster. I have been able to contribute about 20 pieces from my collection to the exhibition. Not all of the exhibits belong directly to Heimbürger, but they are all from his time and should illustrate the era in which Heimbürger appeared.

There will also be a very nice catalog for the exhibition. I persuaded the museum to do this because the director felt that catalogs don't sell well. Now I pay for the catalogs out of my own pocket and sell some copies to the museum, which are offered for the exhibition.
I have always tried to produce catalogs for my exhibitions, because this gives the exhibition a lasting value.

Parallel to the catalog, I have finished the latest issue of my magazine "Magische Welt". For those who don't know, the magazine "Magische Welt" is the longest published magic magazine in Europe. It has been published six times a year since 1952 and is now in its 72nd year. The magazine was founded by German magic dealer W. Geissler-Werry. After his death in 2000 I took it over. The cover story is about well-known Canadian magician Shawn Farquhar. It is accompanied by four fantastic trick descriptions by Shawn.

You can take a look at the two publications mentioned on my YouTube channel:

Until next week and Happy Easter.

Harry Houdini Hamster

I've been sharing stories about magic with animals, and I won't talk about tigers until next week. Last week I introduced Bonkers the Bunny. Today, let's talk about a semi-famous hamster.

The newspaper headline read, "Mysto Wins Prize At Magic Convention!" Okay, it was one of those novelty headline newspapers, printed by my friend and mentor Louis Berkie, from the Fun 'n Magic Shop in San Antonio.

Berkie had taken me to my first magic convention, the 1957 IBM Convention in Houston, Texas. I was 14 years old, and I helped Berkie print those souvenir newspapers at the convention.
I really did win a prize, but it was not for performing any magic. It was a random dealers' drawing. My prize was a beautiful stainless steel Tipover Box. I was thrilled!

The gimmick in the box had air holes, but I only used it for producing a small silk. That is, until I was much older, and realized that a hamster would fit inside the gimmick. By now it was 1980, and I had a wife and two kids, plus a pet dog, a pet cat, and a hamster.

We had a great cage for the hamster, but somehow he kept escaping from it during the night. (Somehow, he also escaped being eaten by the cat.) We started calling him, "Harry Houdini Hamster."

I realized that the hamster was just the right size for my Tipover Box, and I magically produced him during a show at the Austin Cabaret Theatre. A week or two after the show, our pet hamster had a litter of baby hamsters.

We changed HER name to "Harriet Houdini Hamster."

The Fantastic Magic Center is dedicated to preserving and sharing the art of magic. But I can't do it without your help. My Patreon account is the same place as my free weekly podcast:

Here's an extremely simple but powerful and commercial card effect you can keep in your wallet and perform at a moment's notice.

Just walk through the handling for a few hours and you will be performing this regularly!

You need eight cards of different values. Four of these are red backed and the other four of different colours. To set the effect, up simply place the four red cards face-down on top of the four multi colored cards and you are ready to rumble!

Bring out a business card which has "You Will Think Of The Odd One" written the underside and table it. Take out the face-down packet from your wallet or pocket and hold from above in the right hand. We will now display the cards as all having red backs using Brother John Hamman's Hamman count. It's not at all difficult and just requires rhythm and timing. The left thumb peels off the first red card into the palm up left hand and then repeats this with the next two cards.

As the hands come together again we will execute a simple packet switch. The left hands three cards go below the right hands cards and the left hand takes the four right hand cards into the left hand. Don't think of it as a move and just do it! Also do not count the cards or state the obvious about the colour of the cards and look at your audience as you display the cards. Finish the count and display by peeling off the three right hand cards on top of the other cards and square up. Another tip is to keep the right fingers across the front edge of the packet screening the edge of the packet.

"Let me show you what we have." Turn the packet face-up and spread the cards in the hands. "Let's isolate these cards into two groups; face-up and face-down. We will now execute a beautiful optical display of the cards that is the invention of Shigeo Takagi from Japan. You may fool yourself with this! Deal a face-up card to the table and then flip the packet facedown and deal a red back card face-down on top. Flip the packet face-up and deal a face-up card onto the tabled cards. Once more flip the packet face-down and deal a red card onto the tabled cards.

Repeat this face-up and face-down deal exactly as above until you finish with one face-down red back card which you place on top of the packet. The illusion of showing more red backs than they actually are is quite beautiful. Work at a brisk but unhurried pace. Timing is everything here. Pick up the packet and spread it displaying face-up and face-down cards. Now for a simple but very deceptive magician's choice or Equivoque: "We need to take out one of the two groups. Shall we take out the facedown cards or the face-up cards?" This is a beautiful ambiguous sentence because we can interpret the spectators answer in two ways.

If they say "take out the face-down cards" we do just that and casually pocket them. If however they say "take out the face-up cards" we remove them and place them face-up on the table as if there answer meant take out to use. The face-down cards are pocketed. Credit to John Bannon for the 'take out' ambiguity which is just brilliant.

Pick up the tabled cards and deal them into a face-up tabled row. "So this has so far been about your choices. You have just one more choice to make. Please think of any of those cards. Done it?" Once the spectator confirms they have thought of a card ask them to reveal to you and the
audience which card it is. Direct attention to the business card and ask them to turn it over and read out what it says. "You will think of the odd card!" Get a reaction from this and then turn over their thought of card to reveal it has a yellow (or whatever colour) back. Let this moment sink in. "I did this trick for a lady last week and she asked what would happen if she thought of a different card?" Slowly turn over the three remaining cards to reveal a kaleidoscope of different coloured backs and take a bow!
